SCSI HARD DRIVE switch out QUESTION

I have a MAC G4 sawtooth and am going to switch out the SCSI hard drive, to a higher GB (from 23 to 147). Does anyone remember how many pins (68 or 80) does the G4 connector take? Sorry, it's been a while since I switched out hard drives.
G4B SAWTOOTH   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

If it's an OEM installation, your G4 has a 68-pin SCSI drive, and not an 80-pin SCA (SCSI) drive. If you purchased it secondhand, it could have either. Why don't you install a Parallel ATA (ATA-133) or Serial ATA (SATA-150) hard drive with the corresponding PCI controller card? You can get a lot more storage capacity for your money, than you can by going with an expensive SCSI drive. Check the weekly sale prices at your local electronics, computer, or office supply stores for bargains on hard drives. For a Mac-compatible PCI controller card, you'll probably have to purchase one from a dealer online. The lowest price for an ATA-133 controller card is consistently found here.

  • New SCSI hard drive problem: Device busy too long

I set up second SCSI hard drive for my sun box Sparc Station 20. The set up is as follows:
New SCSI hard drive (ID #2) connects to Sun box and connects to tape drive (SCSI #4) with terminator.
Hard drive is Seagate model ST15150N with J01 (open : means disable drive terminator) and J04 (jumper on second position, ID=2).
I CAN format the hard drive and assign label etc.. but when I type the command : > newfs /dev/rdsk/c1t2d0s7 (I use whole slice 7 as one partition and c1 is my second controller).
    The following error displays continuously:
WARNING: /iomnn@f,e0000000/sbus@f,e0001000/dma@1,81000/esp@1,80000/sd@2,0 device busy too long
Is this error come from the wrong hardware set up or from other reason ? Any suggestion is welcome . Thanks in advance.

First of all, thanks for your reply. I appreciate it.
A couple of things. I check my system profiler and I couldn't find out what kind of SCSI card I have. I even opened up my machine and there wasn't any writing on it. So how do I find out what type of card I have? My other question is if the same card worked for the SCSI drive I had before, why won't it work on the new drive. I've set it as the master at the end of the SCSI cord and like I said I used CCC. The drive shows up on my desktop but won't boot. Should I try loading OS from disks instead of using CCC?

  • SCSI hard drive retrieval ? for Gewecke or Appaloosa or YOU!

You helped me with my Macintosh Quadra 840W and Power Mac Power PC 8500/180 "getting info off of SCSI hard drives" question, but it was a little confusing to me because I don't know the vocabulary, but then in another thread I saw this:
"Hi, macwriter. If you have a Mac with a USB port, you can take the hard drive out of the Performa, connect it to this $14 adapter, connect the adapter to your present Mac, open the drive's icon on the desktop, and simply drag your files from the old drive to your present one."
I am sorry I didn't copy who wrote this, but this is the 14 dollar adapter they refer to:
    http://glob2000.stores.yahoo.net/usb20toideca.html
    or http://glob2000.stores.yahoo.net/usb20toideca.html
do you think this would work for my problem? Thanks

No, nothing is dead as far as I know, it is just that...well, 7 or so years ago I used to set these units/drives/CPUs (or whatever they are called) up and plug in all the cables in their intricate ways, but then came the "clamshell" laptop, and then grad school and then the iBook. Now that I have, after 7 years, pulled these things out of the cabinets in which they have been hibernating, trying to remember how things worked or what they are or what they are called is, for me, like trying to reverse engineer an alien spaceship with a butter knife and an eyelash curler while referring to directions in a cuneiform stereo manual.
I really don't even have a clue what to do. I am a terribly visual person which is why I went into art history. I wouldn't even know what to look for at the thrift store except for the monitor. I think these boards are a little hopeless for people like me that don't deal with the tech world at all. I was hoping that there was a way that I could find a cable and just connect the SCSI drive like I do my LaCie external hard drive. That is about the level of competence that I am at. I might just have to take pictures and show them to someone at a store and see if they can draw me some instructive pictures.
Please know that I really do think it is so lovely that you try to help me. I just don't know which things are called by what names. I don't want to waste your time but if there is some place online, or in Berkeley that you know of that might help me (for cheap) that would be great. thank you.

  • Can I use a SCSI hard drive in a SCSI CD-ROM enclosure?

I have an external SCSI hard drive which has stopped working.
It has been going OK for some time, but has suddenly ceased completely, i.e. the light doesn't even come on when I plug it in.
I'm guessing from this that it may be the power supply that's at fault - which is good, because there is data on the drive I need to access.
My question is, can I simply transfer the drive to a SCSI CD-ROM enclosure and access it from there?
The reason I'm not just sucking-it-&-see is that I really really don't want to risk frying the drive, because some of the data is not backed up.
    Any info much appreciated...

The vast majority of those jumpers have to do with SCSI addressing. Each device on the SCSI Bus needs a unique address. The Controller takes #7, the built-in CD takes #3, and the built-in drive (if present) is most often 0.
If you can reverse the jumper-block built into the case, you may be able to get the number dial to work. If not, you can ignore it and set the address semi-permanently with jumpers directly on the drive. There appears to be more than one set on your drive, just choose the most accessible set and use only those. It's the setting on the Drive that will determine the address, not the case.
jumper marked 8 counts for 8 if present
jumper marked 4 counts for 4 if present
jumper marked 2 counts for 2 if present
jumper marked 1 counts for 1 if present
add-em-up to get the SCSI address.
No jumpers give address zero. A final Address of either 1 or 2 or 4 can be made with only one jumper.

Without a bootable backup/clone or a Time Machine backup of your previous Snow Leopard installation or a saved copy of Lion's install app, you'll have to upgrade your Leopard volume to Snow Leopard (10.6.6+) so you can waste another hour or more DLing the Lion thing again.

Any ideas what do i have to do?

Well, let's hope that nothing was jiggled out of place when you were installing the new hard drive. Your optical drive may just be out of alignment or the disc you have is "dirty." Get a lint-free cloth and some rubbing alcohol, then clean the disc as thoroughly as you can starting from the center and working outward in a concentric circlular motion. See if that helps. In particular clean the inner portion well.
If this does not help, then you have a problem. You have opened the computer yourself. That action voids all support from Apple. If you take the computer in for service the store may refuse to service the computer. This is not related to your now expired warranty.

  • New Hard Drive still have Question Mark Folder

So I first got the 'Question Mark Folder' and had to keep running Safe Boot Mode to use computer. Finally got around to replacing the Hard Drive, but this Question Mark Folder still comes up trying to turn the computer on and now trying to setup the new hard drive. Won't let me do anything. I've tried all of the button combos/recovery mode/etc. Tried inserting both a backup disk of Mavericks and Snow Leopard, nothing. Is there any other problems that could cause this? Maybe a dead SATA cable? or something else small hopefully?

My newest Mac just did the same "folder of death" dance. It's too late for you now, but you might consider a passport backup drive. You can get 2&3 T-bytes now fairly reasonably priced. A given with computers is they will crash, just a question of how bad and when, so you can be prepared for the next time.

  • My hard drive went out one of my Macs and I am trying to install logic studio on another Mac but the serial number is invalid. What are my options?

My hard drive went out one of my Macs and I am trying to install logic studio on another Mac but the serial number is invalid. What are my options?

Check that the serial you are using is the correct one..
Typically the problem is either you are misreading the serial and therefore typing it in wrong. Check you are correctly entering zeros or O.. and so on....
    or...
You bought the LP9 upgrade version.... which requires the LP8 full serial as well.
If it is the LP9 upgrade serial.. (and not the LP9 full serial) you must enter your original LP8 full serial first and then the upgrade serial for LP9.. when it asks for it.
Failing that.. you can obtain a replacement serial from Apple.. using this form.....

  • How can I completely wipe the hard drive with out the Mac OS X disc? I don't need any of the info on the computer.

How can I completely wipe the hard drive with out the Mac OS X disc? I don't need any of the info on the computer.

You can't unless you have a bootable system on an external drive you can use. Otherwise, you need either the original disc that came with your computer or a retail copy of Snow Leopard DVD. The latter contains 10.6.3, so your model must be capable of booting from that or an earlier version of OS X.
You can purchase replacement discs from Apple:
Apple Store Customer Service at 1-800-676-2775 or visit online Help for more information.
To contact product and tech support: Apple - Support - Contact Apple Support.
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.

  • SCSI hard drives in G3 tower

    Hi
I have a PowerMac 8600 running OS9.2 nicely on two internal SCSI hard drives.
    Can I transfer SCSI HDDs from a 8600 into a B&W G3 tower? I read the G3 B&W supports Ultra2 SCSI. What is Ultra2 SCSI?
    Thanks
    Web dude

Although most beige G3s did indeed ship with IDE drives, the beige g3 has a SCSI bus built in. It is limited to 5 MB/sec.
On the 8500, 8600, 9500, 9600, the Internal Fast SCSI bus can transfer as fast as 10 MB/sec, provided the cables are kept reasonably short and active termination is used. The external is the same old 5 MB/sec. All the above are now referred to as "narrow" and internally use the 50-pin ribbon cable.
So yes, you can move your old drives right over and they will work fine. Your unit may not have shipped with an internal SCSI cable, but they are easy to come by.
The Server version of the Beige g3 shipped with a Apple Ultra Wide SCSI PCI card, capable of transferring up to 40 MB/sec using Wide Drives, 20 MB/sec using "narrow" drives. It was essentially an ATTO Express PCI PSC reloaded with Apple Firmware and called the Apple53C875. An Apple firmware update is available through this article:
25176- Mac OS X 10.0: SCSI Card Updater Document and Software
The pale yellow cable had three 68-pin drive connectors, and was already at is maximum length at about three feet. Single-Ended active termination was provided by straps on the last drive. A sticker was placed over the external connector on the PCI card, because Apple felt its use would extend the bus too far for reliable operation.
Ultra SCSI "narrow" was a very popular option for the Blue & White G3 if you just had a peripheral or two to hook up, usually externally. It was implemented most often with the Adaptec 2930, which continues to be supported and drivers were built into Mac OS X (including 10.4 Tiger if my memory is accurate).
Ultra2 LVD SCSI was never offered in an Apple branded solution in the beige G3, but was available as an option in the Blue & White G3 and Server model. Single-channel solutions used the Adaptec 2940U2B, whose firmware update is here:
60409- Ultra SCSI Card 1.2 Firmware Update: Document and Software
A 68-pin cable with three drive connectors and a discrete LVD terminator (captive at the end of the cable) was used. The card could transfer data using wide drives as fast as 80 MB/sec, \[faster than the steady-state performance of the best drives available today]. It has one Internal/External SCSI Bus, and used a "regular" 68-pin external connector.
Later, the Blue & White G3 was sold with a two-channel card, the 3950U2, which is quite rare. It was the first PCI SCSI card to have a 64-bit PCI Bus interface. The G4 AGP graphics and later Macs were available with an optional "version 2" two-channel card, which was a modified ATTO UL2D with Apple Firmware. It provides a VHDCI external connector.
Most of the articles discussing this subject start as if the Blue & White G3 were the first Mac ever made, and go on from there> this one has a bit more background information about older styles, but not older PCI cards. It includes a table of different SCSI names and speeds with their cable length restrictions:

I recently had my hard drive wiped out by a virus and had to reinstall windows and itunes. When I hooked up my ipod it did not transfer my songs from my ipod to my itunes library. How do I do this?

iTunes syncing is generally in one direction only, from the computer's iTunes library to the iPod.  You cannot use iTunes to transfer song files from iPod to computer (except for songs purchsed from the iTunes Store).
However, there are third-party methods and utilities that can transfer from iPod to computer.  If you do an Internet search on something like "ipod transfer," you should get some links.  (The CNET article seems to be popular.)
Once the song files are on your computer's drive, you can add them to your new iTunes library.  (Going forward, you should use a backup strategy, and include your iTunes data in what gets backed up.  Then, you would be able to recover your complete iTunes library, including things like playlists and ratings.)

  • My HP hard drive went out.

My hard drive went out on my HP and I tried to contact someone online but could not get anyone. I need to know what I will need todo its still under warenty I HAVE ONLY HAD IT FOR GOING ON 6 MONTHS. I am not satisfied with how everything is turning out I expected more form this company.
I am a very unsatified customer.

I suggest that you contact someone by telephone or email instead or try the online chat again. Hard disks are a warranty replaceable item.  Contact HP
You will need to locate the recovery disk set or USB recovery media that you created (when asked to) at the time when you first set up your notebook.  If you did not create a set then you will need to purachse a set from HP or an HP Partnet

  • Replaced hard drive, locked out of Windows, Recovery DVDs freezing?

My fiance has an HP Pavilion G61 laptop. He purchased it through a rental company back in 2010. Last month, the hard drive fritzed out and died on him. We had it replaced through a local computer repair store, as his laptop was no longer under warranty, but when we got the laptop back, Windows was not activated on it. We called them back and asked them to fix the issue, but after a few days, they discovered that the Windows code had been locked out and was unusable. We searched online for similiar instances and he was told to purchase the HP system recovery DVDs and run them, and that when the recovery was done, it would be back to factory settings and Windows would be activated. We received the discs in the mail after buying them from HP, and can get Disc 1 to run fine all the way to completion. Then we get to the "Insert disc 2" screen, and we put the disc in and...nothing. Absolutely nothing. It freezes on this screen every single time and does NOTHING. We're incredibly frustrated and he is talking about trashing the laptop because it's completely useless at this point. Can ANYONE help me out and tell me what is wrong and how to fix it?
For reference, it's Windows 7 Home Premium edition that was on his laptop.

I would test the hard drive and memory just to be sure there is not some hardware issue causing the problem with the recovery discs.
When you first power up the notebook, use the F10 key (tapping rapidly) to enter the bios and run the diagnostics. Post back any messages or errors please.
I can help you get Windows installed without the HP discs but is a huge undertaking and should be a last resort.
Also, Please post your full product Number for me.
