SD Card Corruption Issue?

Hi there,
I believe there is a cross-platform problem with Android causing the SD card to become corrupted, specifically with photo/video files.
I'm wondering if anyone has any solid answers to this problem (a Google search of the title of this thread in Android forums will find many results, but little in the way of answers).
Here's what's happening to my Droid X
I start taking pictures and or video.  Everything is fine till suddenly photos go missing.  I'll take a photo and it will not save.  If I stop here and reboot my phone I'm all set, but if I take another picture all hell breaks loose on the SD card.  I'll go into the gallery and see that the last few photos have a blank thumb nail and show as 1Kb files.
If I don't do anything and go back into the gallery, with each visit to the gallery more photos become corrupted.  Photos that were OK yesterday would be 1Kb empty files today.  Attempts to recover the photos using file recovery software have not worked.
If I put the SD card in my PC and run a check disk scan on it I get a "Windows has made corrections to the file system" message. Once repaired things work great again until some random point when it happens again. I can even leave the corrupted photo files on the card, the root of the problem is the file system corruption. If I take the extra step of formatting the SD card it seems to stay stable longer before the file system crashes. The problem seems to make other problems worse, most notably my battery life takes a dive when the problem occurs, and a format will literally double my battery life on standby.
This is my second Droid X with the exact same problem (it was a warranty replacement for this issue, the ease with which the Verizon people agreed to send me a new phone made me think this is a wide problem, they never even asked me to trouble shoot it).  The first time it happened I didn't know what was going on and the error got so bad that it destroyed by SD card (the stock one).  After replacing the SD card the phone began to run great, battery life improved noticably, very few slow downs or crashing programs, then the next time I noticed corrupted photo files the phone became temperamental again until I formatted the SD card again.
Its my belief there is something wrong with the software and I've run into a number of other people who have the same problem on a number of different Droid platforms.  I think for me the problem began with the release of Gingerbread, I used to use this phone's amazing camera all the time and never had the problem.  Now I'm lucky if I can take a half dozen photos before I have to reformat the SD card.  If I don't use the camera the card does not get corrupted.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I had a similar problem, but it turned out to be a mechanical problem. My Macbook Pro was not "seeing" the little lock switch. I've found pushing my card back towards the screen (towards the lock switch) clears up my problem.
Now I need to decide how annoyed I am with this and wether I want to trouple with my Apple Care.

Remote lock & Memory card corrupted issue
    Hi Dear Friends,
You might have experienced the "Memory card corrupted issue."
Don't panic! The solution is here!
Your memory card is just 'locked', it isn't 'corrupted'!
For sure, this post would be of great help to you, if:
    • You have enabled the "Remote lock" feature of your Nokia device.
    • You have sent the remote lock message to your device and locked it remotely.
Finding the solution really took me a lot of time. I was inspired by various posts on the Discussion, and decided to find the official notes on the issue. So would like to thank those who shared their tips, and helped us solve this problem.
I'm using E66, (you might use something else), and would refer to E51's and E65's User guide so often.
Of course, I'm not going to explain the instructions, and recommend you to refer to your user guides when needed.
On the contrary, I'm going to explain what may not be mentioned in your user guides.
    Let’s Begin
    What Has Happened:
In short, you attempted to test the feature, your phone was locked, you keyed in the lock code, code was accepted, you used the phone for a while, switched it off, powered it on, you were prompted the Lock code, you keyed in the lock code, code was accepted, you attempted to view some stuff that was on your memory card, you didn't find it, you tried to run a program that was installed on your memory card, the program icon didn't open, you put the memory card in the card reader and connected it to PC, it was not detected, you went to Menu> Tools> Memory card> You saw "Memory card corrupted"!
Don't, don't select the Yes selection key if you got the caution message, "Memory Card corrupted, reformat it?" because your memory card isn't corrupted, it's simply being locked!
But you can't find the unlock memory card command in Menu> Tools> Memory card> Options.
    So? What to DO?
    1. (This step is optional) Disable the Remote lock feature.
(Refer to your user guides) and change Allow Remote Lock> to no.
Then, while the unit is on,
    2. Press the power key briefly, and select Remove memory card.
    3. Remove the memory card from the slot.
    4. Press OK if prompted.
    5. Reinsert the memory card in the slot.
    6. Reopen Menu> Tools> Memory card.
Is your memory card detected? If yes!
    7. Follow tips number 2 & 3 of What to Know section below.
Did you get "Password removed" message?
If no, be careful of the case of the first character.
If you had changed the Remote lock message many times, use the one that was practically sent to the device via text message.
. In case you had set a password on your memory card before, you may also attempt to unlock the locked memory using your own password, not the first eight characters of the remote lock message.
Step seven would make the memory card detectable to the connected card reader to the PC too.
    8. The memory card is detected temporarily, but it is locked and the "memory card corrupted" issue reappears every time you switch off/on the phone, unless you successfully complete step seven.
    What to Know?
    Official User guide Tips:
    1. Remote locking also locks your memory card. (E51 page100)
. Yes, the one mobile phone that sends your device the predefined remote locking message, receives the confirmation message in response, indicating, "Mobile telephone and memory card are locked". But it isn't written in E66's and E65's.
    2. To unlock the memory card, select Menu> Tools> Memory> Options> Remove password, and "enter the remote locking message as the password". (E51 page100)
. Yes, quite clear, but the quoted part ("enter the remote locking message as the password") isn't written on my E66's User guide, and there's a vague precaution on E65's, (refer to number 4).
    3. If the message is longer than 8 characters, the first 8 characters are used as the memory card password. (E51 page100)
. Yes, quite clear good E51, but I don't own you; I have E66 your little sister. I owe my memory card's survival to nice users on the Discussion.
    4. The maximum number of characters allowed is 8. Using more than 8 characters could prevent unlocking the memory card and require reformatting it. If reformatting the memory card is required, all information on the card will be lost. (E65 page28)
. Quite interesting, but it contradicts what good E51 says in number three¡!
. And it contradicts my own experience of the issue (and some other users' on the Discussion) too, since my E66's memory card accepted the 'first eight characters' of the 'ten-character long’ remote lock message that I had previously used to remote lock it.
. The first three tips are quite important and shouldn't have been excluded from E66's and E65's user guides. I don't have the time to download and review all the user guides that support this feature, but at least I read some user manuals and also got the impression (from the posts on the discussion) that there had been not enough information on E66's, E65's, E71's, N96's, and some others.
You may like to do a simple search on Google:
"The first 8 characters are used as the memory card password" site:nokia.com
Since the content of the user guides on the server seem not be searchable for any reason, you won't find any official support result except those of the good users on the Discussions. And the 'Nokia Site Search" brings no result too. (At least on the date of this post).
¡ Terribly sorry for those who have selected Yes to the Reformat caution message. It wasn't your fault. But there's an idiom that says, sleep on it! "Think about it for a while before coming up with a decision".
But now that you have tested the feature and know its solution, don't be afraid, and enable the Remote lock feature again! God forbid, but it may be needed one day!

Dear, I guess, / This article doesn't suit your case. / • You have not enabled the "Remote lock" feature of your Nokia device. / • You have not locked your device remotely. / Because you don't know where the remote lock is and haven't played with its settings. / You need to explain what has happened. / The only thing we get is that your memory card doesn't open. / 1. your phone model, e.g., 5130. / 2. What did you do recently that might have caused this issue? / 3. What methods did you try to unlock it? / Use some of the tips provided above. (except number 1). / Yours

I am having periodic blue screen and corruption issues in Winodws 7 64-bit with my MSI 870A-G54 system.  I have a Phenom II X2 560 BE processor, 2 4GB DDR 1333 DIMMs (first bank - unganged), 2 2GB DDR3 1333 DIMMs (2nd bank - unganged), 2 Hitachi 1TB 32MB Cache HDD's in a RAID 0 array, two Galaxy PCIe2.0 GT9500's, 550w power supply, internal DVD drive, and 1 1TB Seagate external 3.0 USB drive.  After I load all the supplementary drivers from the MSI site (ensuring I use the 64bit versions), my system becomes unstable.  I even tried the new motherboard chipset drivers from AMD (10.12).  I am running the latest firmware as well (17.7).  The system in not overclocked in any manner and I experience the same results with fail-safe and optimized settings.
I have tried isolating the issue after loading each driver, but due to the random nature of the issue, I am not having success.  I have also performed memory and CPU tests that report no errors.  Any ideas?

  • E61 - Memory Card Corrupt

I bought a Kingston 512mb MiniSD card along with my new Nokia E61. But after few hours, the data saved in it was inaccessable, and message was "Memory card corrupt".
I removed it put it back, and the message was still there. After few hours I put it bnack in, and now it worked (for few hours). I tried formating it in both FAT/FAT32 formats. But the card always remained accessable through Card Reader and not the phone.
I finally got it replaced with another piece and the problem was in there too, which makes me feel that maybe there is some compatibility issue with my phone. What do you suggest I try?

Hi, actually I came across the same problem as yours. I got the exactly the same SD card. In the beginning, everything works fine from the SD, after few days when I tried to run the applications installed on the SD, the phone showed me "system error (-1)", which means the phone cannot find the specified file/path. The solution is now to press the power button and choose the option of "remove mem.", then it works find until the next switch on.
And also it is frequently reboot or hang-up. I am think this should be the firmware problem, and really hope can update the firmware from PC or in other ways. This phone is right now the pain in the .... for me.

  • How to deal with corruption issue?

A couple of months ago after installing Aperture 2, my Imac started slowing down, every program at some time would hang and could not be forced to quit. The machine had to be turned off (control command power) and left off for several minutes. On restart, things would be fine for 1 to several days. It has been to the shop twice with no improvement and I have talked to the experts a couple of time. This is my first mac so I only have a couple of years experience. From all I have read it would seem I have a corruption issue. I set up a troubleshooting account and the computer acts like it did when it was new on that account. Of course I can use none of my data in this account. Where do I go from here, reset preferences, archive and reformat? Please give me some suggestions and directions on how to do it?
    Thanks,
    oldgrandad

    Hi,
It sounds like it's the same issue I was having. In my experience, as long as important data is backed up, doing an "Erase & Install" from time to time clears out any files/data that is causing your system to run slow (cache files etc). Mine had become painfully slow (I work mainly with images/large files) & was getting a bit frustrating if I was using Aperture & Photoshop etc.
I also use Techtool Pro to defrag & keep my hard drives in good shape.
The extra RAM combined with the "cleanse" definitely made a big improvement & all programmes run extremely well now.

  • Macbook Pro - SD Card Reader Issues Solved!

I recently purchased a gently used, early 2011 MBP. I've had it for a few months, but I did not try using the SD card reader until last week... so much for kicking the tires. Long story short, the darn thing did not recognize or mount one single SD card out of a handful of cards, and at least 3 different card manufacturers all used with my Canon DSLR. I searched the net trying to find a solution and tried everything from sticking the card in at a some strange and ridiculous slant to shutting the computer down three different ways and resetting the System Management Controller (SMC); nothing worked. So today I spent 25 minutes or so chatting with an apple care specialist and they (Jim the apple care guru) finally came up with a solution, even though I'm sure neither one of us knows exactly why it worked. So here goes...
Put your SD card in a external card reader, once it's mounted go to disk utilities and reformat (erase) the drive to Mac OS Extended. Take it out of your external reader and put it in the built-in reader on your Mac. Now, of course, it will no longer work in your camera or most other devices so you'll have to format it again in your device of choice. However, here's the kicker... once I did l all of that and took some quick pics, I put it back in my MBP and it popped right up even after a reboot. But wait there's more.... I then put the SD card in my wife's work laptop (PC running Win8) and played with the files for a bit, then stuck it back in the Mac and it still recognized it. So there goes the "windows screws up the formatting myth).
So naturally I assumed that I would be forced to go through this double formatting process for all of my SD cards (and I have a lot), but then it happened! A Christmas miracle in October. I tried a second card, and then a third and a fourth and a fifth, etc... AND now they ALL pop up just like they should. Without reformatting or any other humanly changed processes. Yep... There you have it, it makes no sense. But it works ;)
Somehow formatting just one card in the card reader "woke up" the whole process, almost like my MBP was like, hmmm I was wondering what you kept sticking inside that's slot of mine...
Hope this helps someone. Sorry for the rant :)

Anyone else with card reader issues should read this page. Just because your card reader doesn't appear to be working or has mysteriously dropped off your system doesn't necessarily mean a logic board replacement. I've repaired several portables over the years that had been quoted for costly logic board replacements, when in fact the failures were relatively easy to resolve once you understood the real problem.
It's common belief a PRAM or SMC reset should fix all hardware glitches but sometimes it just doesn't go deep enough, as I found out with my 2011 MBP. Simply removing the battery was all it took to resurrect my seemingly dead card reader, when PRAM and SMC resets failed to have any impact on the problem.

You can only download content(other than podcast episodes) from a country's iTunes Store if you're in that country. For paid content, you also need to supply a payment method valid in that country.

  • Still no fix for USB card sleep Issue

Hi I just bought a 3rd party USB 2.0 card (an IOGEAR GIC251U). When I plug my LaCie extrenal USB drive in it works fine, until the computer has been to sleep. When the computer wakes up the drive has disappeared and I get a message saying that the drive has been improperly disconnected and that I can damage it by not ejecting before disconnecting.
Looking at the posts on this forum, it seems that this PCI USB card sleep issue is a persistant problem. I have even heard buying a card described as a "crap shoot".
That is not an acceptable answer to me. I insist that Apple reccomend a USB 2.0 card that it is willing to garuntee will work with my mac (an AGP G4 blue and white tower). If not, how can Apple in good faith sell computers with PCI that isnt equipped to handle built in apple features such as the sleep mode? I don't mean to sound like a demanding jerk of a customer but I dont think it is too much to ask that my computers advertised features (PCI expandability and sleep mode) both be able to work together.
G4/400 MHz AGP graphics   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Hi
xlr8yourmac.com has a wealth of info on compatable devices of all kinds, it's often worth looking there & other Mac sites before purchasing..
Apple cannot possibly determine compatability of all available 3rd party devices, it is up to the vendor to determine what systems/OS versions their hardware will support.
I would stick with a vendor that is known for Mac support, such as Sonnet (or others that are sold through Mac sites such as OWC, SmallDog,etc.,) unless you are willing to do significant research on a specific product for compatability with your specific setup prior to purchasing.

  • E4200V2 file corruption issues

    Hello,
I am getting file corruption issues when doing a file transfer onto the NAS (hard drive plugged into the router). Files are turned into folders while keeping the same filename. It happens occasionally.
    I have firmware: 2.1.39.145204 installed.
Any remedy for this as it is a very serious problem.

The only known solution is to call linksys and ask them for a replacement router model that does not contain the bug. See thread link for details.

    2. Unable to download files from the internet ( error message unable to downlaod file ...)
    3. Data being lost on the memory card and having to format and re install all my data ( have done this once)
     i have also done a hard rest (red+green +camera)
wondering if any of these problems have been seem befor and if you could sujest solutions

memory card corruption is common. i am surprised that the one supplied with your phone lasted this long. you can try to reformat the memory card and see if this helps any. if not just buy another card. yes such behaviors can be seen in phones with corrupted memory cards but not only.

  • "Memory Card Corrupted" - Error Help!!!

Hi, I have a Nokia 6210 Navigator, and my memory card suddenly stopped working when I was opening a file. A message came up "Memory Card Corrupted". When I went into File manager, it showed my memory card as not there (grayed out). When I tried to explore it within my phone, there was no option to format, and there was a message "Memory Card Corrupted" on the screen.
When I connected my phone via Mass Storage Mode, it showed it as a drive, though when I tried to open it, it said "Insert a disk into I:\". It does not show up in Disk Management or CMD, and when I tried to format or run Check Disk, it would not run - "Drive not Ready". When I connected it into PC Suite Mode, I could perform a backup, though when I checked it could only backup my Phone Memory, not the card. The other modes don't work either.
I have tried many different softwares to try and backup/recover my data, and to try and format it, though that didn't work either
I have tried restarting my phone many times, but that didn't work either.

no other way to fix it unfortunately. unless you want to go to the trouble of taking your phone to your local Nokia Care Centre, where they will probably do the same thing anyway and you will still have to setup all your applications etc again. those messages are due to the phone thinking that the memory card isn't inserted when it is, so obviously it is a phone problem. another suggestion would be to check that the memory card is inserted correctly and to clean the contacts for the memory card (i.e. gently blow out the dust with a deep breath). if the card is the default one that came with the phone in the box, its most likely the Nokia one. i have the feeling they're manufctured under licence by SanDisk anyway.
yes, firmware updates can bring advantages such as bug fixes, new features and improved battery life. it is generally recommended to keep the phone up to date anyway to ensure its longevity and increased reliability and security. i know its a pain, but you will have to do the hard reset now that you have backed up all your data. let us know how it goes.
if you could, please throw some kudos our way, it would mean a lot to us

  • Built in SD Card Slot issues - Canon XSi

I have had a Canon Digital Rebel XSi for a few years now and it has always worked well with my macbook and iphoto. I recently upgraded to the Macbook Pro (early 2011) and was pretty excited about being able to leave the USB cable behind.
    Here's where it gets interesting:
When I pop the SD card out of my camera and put it into my macbook pro the SD card shows up on the desktop and in iphoto 2011, however it doesn't have anything on it except for the default folders that the camera creates. No photos.
I could also see that there was occupied space on the SD card, no files but used space
When I put my SD card back in the camera and got an error of "Cannot create folder" so I couldn't use it or see the photos anymore
I used a restore program to get all the photos I'd taken over the weekend trip off the card
Next I decided to reformat the SD card in the Canon XSi, I popped off a few pics and put the card back in the Macbook and I was able to import them
Cool it was fixed... well, actually I put it back in the camera after importing and "Cannot create folder" again! Again the card is useless
I updated the firmware on the XSi to the latest 1.1.0 version and tried it all again, but still the same results
There is a fix and it's simple enough. If I just continue to use the USB cable everything works normally. I will of course do this, but I'd love to use the new SD card slot and not corrupt my card. I'm curious if anyone else is having similar issues. I'm also concerned that when I grab photos from a friend's SD card that I'll break it, and that just aint cool.
Thanks to anyone who reads through this exciting post and offers any suggestions.

You could have a faulty slot, aluxious.
Have you tried inserting the card in the slot as quickly as possible, rather than gently, though. I've found a couple of mine at least don't mount if I insert them too slowly. (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3553 seems to confirm the need for this).
Checked with various cards, and made sure the contacts on the cards are clean and undamaged, I guess?
    Cheers

  • MicroSD Card Corrupts and Restarts Centro

    Hello,
My Verizon Centro has been randomly corrupting my SD card after I sync and when saving a photo to the card. If I remove the corrupt card and then replace it in the centro, it will then reboot infinitely until I remove the card and reformat it with my PC. The card info page shows a seies of boxes by the little sd card symbol and ptunes claims I have removed the card. If I explore the card with my PC, all the files have boxes for names and will not let me explore the files themselves as the directory syntax is incorrect. Sometimes pTunes will play the last song played but will not find any other songs. I have been removing my card for syncs or just formatting the card and reinstalling the music data to a "MUSIC" folder on the card almost daily. Anyone else having this problem? Help please.
