Searching content of .dmg files

Is there any way to do a "contents" search in a .dmg file?
I have several .dmg files, made with DiskUtility , encrypted, and then opened as a virtual disk, under Devices on my MacBook Air and used to store files.
But I sometimes want to search the contents of those files. (I am doing all this when the file is open and listed under Devices)
I can't get Spotlight to search it,  even when the following Apple's instructions on how to index folders or volumes, http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2409.
I also tried using direct instructions with the terminal using,
sudo mdutil -i on /Volumes/volume_name
This one is particularly curious because it gives different results with different files. When I created a new test file it returned,
Air:~ DAir$ sudo mdutil -i on /Volumes/test1
Password:
/Volumes/test1:
          Indexing enabled.
Even so, I still could not get spotlight or search in a finder window to reliably find any content.
(sometimes if I opened, made a small alteration and then saved a file it would find content in that file, although not in any other files on the volume.)
but when I use this same command with an older volume of the same sort it always returns the result, "indexing disabled"
sudo mdutil -i on /Volumes/Error12Codes
/Volumes/Error12Codes:
          Indexing disabled.
It can never find any content in these older files.
Likewise, the program EasyFind will not find content on these volumes even when set to find "file contents"
Can anyone help with this? How can I search the content of a .dmg volume?

A test .dmg file that I just made does have .spotlight -V100 in it.
Still it will not find a word in the contents of a file, unless I first open that file, make a small change in it, save it, and close it. Then it seems that it has indexed that file.
In fact it would seem that when that happened it indexed all the files in that .dmg volume, and I can now find the contents of any file there.
But the .dmg files that I made earlier do not have the .spotlight-v100 in them and spotlight will not find any contents.
And still if I give the command "sudo mdutil -i on /Volumes/Error12Codes" it returns
"Indexing disabled"
Putting these .dmg files into the privacy section of the Spotlight preferences and then removing them as Apple suggests, seems to have no effect.
What is going on?

  • Need to search contents of text files on a windows network drive....

I am trying to search the content of a directory on a windows network drive for that contains .sas files (essentially text files) for a certain text string. Find does not seem to do this. Any ideas/suggestions?
When I copy a file to my desktop I can do it easily, but that is not an option.

Uh yeah....in my opinion GREATLY affects Apple's claim to windows compatibility......unless there is a solution out there. My firm is windows-based and we have a terabyte or so of data and files related to various stuff all buried in subfolders..and all I want is to search one folder for one text string.
I'm praying for a solution here.....

  • Can't search contents of files only file names.

I am really stuck guys. It's been aggrevating me for days. I tried to download 3rd party programs for searching in files and it still doesn't work. I checked the forums here and people only have trouble searching for kinds of files. Even when I use search strings like "contents" or "description" it still will only look for file names not contents.
It's frustrating because I am typing up my own personal book and I am in the process of fixing all the mistakes which requires searching by contents in my folder where my files are stored!
    Thanks in advance!

    I've tried various file types.
I tried adding my HD to the list and literally waited 1 minuted but to no avail.
The next step is probably reinstalling Snow Leopard, right?
By the way, I mostly use Finder for searching, so how would I enable the indexing there? Or is it only spotlight that has this indexing thing?

  • How to search the content of TPL files?

Hi. I have a folder with hundreds of template "tpl" files that I'm needing to search the file contents of but using the regular search of that folder is unable to search the content of the tpl files, is it possible to do so?
    Thanks!,
    Wesley

I assume there's not a "scan all files" with Spotlight?
I don't think that would be possible in the specific case of content searches. Here's my understanding:
EasyFind searches the files themselves when it looks for content, which makes it slow but very flexible.
In contrast, Spotlight searches a pre-existing index when it looks for things - it can be instructed to search the index in various ways, but if the desired information is not in the index in the first place, it won't be found. Indexing the content of every file in the system is not feasible, so only the contents of certain file types get indexed. I found the following in [this Wikipedia article|http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spotlight_%28software%29]:
Aside from basic information about each file like its name, size and timestamps, the mdimport daemon can also index the content of some files, when it has an Importer plug-in that tells it how the file content is formatted. Spotlight comes with importers for certain types of files, such as Microsoft Word, MP3, and PDF documents. Apple publishes APIs that allow developers to write Spotlight Importer plug-ins for their own file formats.[3]
So unless you'd care to write your own Spotlight Importer plug-in for tpl files, I think you are out of luck!

  • Spotlight doesn't find search results in .HTML file contents

When I use Spotlight to search, it doesn't find any .HTML file contents. If I rename an .HTML file to use a .TXT extension, the contents are found. Is there a way to enable Spotlight to find contents in .HTML files?

I remembered that used to be problem, so I just checked on my local version of my site, and Spotlight found the files on the basis of content without a problem. So I took a look at my installed mdimporters in /Library/Spotlight, to see what may have led to this happy turn of events. I thought perhaps the iWeb mdimporter might be doing it, but was unable to find a reference to HTML in its type declarations. I then took a look at in /System/Library/Spotlight and discovered that RichText.mdimporter has a declaration for public.html as a content type. You should have that mdimporter installed by default, but you might take a look to make sure it is there.
If the mdimporter is there, but the html files aren't being indexed, it could be that whatever program you are using to create them isn't giving them the appropriate content type. I code by hand using TextEdit, which saves them with the following metadata entry:
    kMDItemContentType = "public.html"
    kMDItemContentTypeTree = (
    "public.html",
    "public.text",
    "public.data",
    "public.item",
    "public.content"
They are then evidently indexed without problem by the RichText.mdimporter. You might try opening one of your html docs in TextEdit (as plain text), resave, and see if Spotlight then picks up the content of the file. Of course, the content means the words that people see when they look at the page in a browser. If the content you are talking about is stuff that is inside an html tag, you are out of luck. I know of NO way to get Spotlight to find that. EasyFind will though, but it is a brute force search and will take awhile, even when restricted to a particular folder.

  • Search/index Word DOTM file content

We are unable to or locate body and header/footer contents on Word .DOTM files using Windows search.  Assume that a new iFilter wold be required to do this.  A few third party search/index tools exist, but none of them can open .DOTM

  • Finder/Spotlight does not seem to be searching the contents of docx files anymore. How do I re-enable this search function?

I used to be able to search the contents of .docx MS Word files in the past, but this feature suddenly stopped working.
Anyone else experiencing this as well and is there a fix?
    Thanks.

Similar or same problem, with similar and same hardware/software.  This is incredibly frustrating given that for the last ten years we've been told not to worry about organizing our files but instead rely on tags and meta-data.
.docx files are found when no file content is searched.
When some content is searched, recent .docx files (last 7 days) files may appear, but nothing older.
Just to be clear, when any content is searched for, no .docx files older than 7 days are present in search results.
However, .doc files with identical content are found, as are PDFs etc.
    Reindexing changes nothing.

  • Installing apps from dmg file package content windows doesn't gain focus

When I download a dmg file and double click to mount, after it mounts, the window containing the package contents never gains focus and stays hidden behind the rest of the windows that are open and I have to use Expose to find it. Is this an error or setting I've missed? On my friend's iMac it works fine but not on my MacBook Pro and we both have Snow Leopard.
    Thanks

Ok the first option didn't have any effect. When I opened the dmg from Chrome it loaded the window in the background.
Dragging the dmg onto the DiskMounter app worked. The window opened allowing me to drag the App to the Applications folder and was in focus.
I have a similar issue when I open an archive(zip) file from chrome/safari/firefox it shows the progress of the unarchiving bu then the finder window that would normally come to focus displaying the unarchived folder is hidden behind my other open windows.

  • Dmg files are not executable - need to reinstall Lion( but will mount)

iMac 27, 2.8 Quad Core, 16 GB RAM, 3 TB HD running 10.7.3
    Hi,
lead in > Lately I am having trouble with Aperture 3.2.3 who doesn't let me make some image adjustments "out of the blue". To correct this I usially have to reinstall Aperture from scratch. Trying to do so made me find out that I can't execute the Aperture trial 3.1 dmg file or any other dmg file on my iMac. When i double klick on a dmg file it will flash once and then just sit there doing nothing. The dmg "Get Info" window shows that the file is associated with the DiskImageMounter.app as supposed to. I have no glue why it won't execute these files and open the installer. I have tried everything from executing with disk image to repair permissions etc, etc. and I have read all forums and threats I could find but to no avail.
The only way to fix this is reinstalling OSX 10.7.3. After reinstalling Lion everything is just fine  - for a while. I am able to reinstall aperture with the trial version dmg file. All other dmg files will also execute. For now I was able to work with my reinstalled system for the last seven days with no glitches, but last night same problem occured as described earlier. I have also checked my harddrive with disk utility and onyx. Both apps say HD is just fine. I wonder how long I will be able to work this time before desaster strikes me again. I should probably mention that the non executable dmg file problem only kicks in after I experience the Aperture problems I mentioned.
Should I reformat my HD and reinstall all my content and OS from a clone Super Duper copy that I have? I appreciate any comments/suggestioms you guys might come up with. Thanks.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Try the action again. Post any messages that appear in the Console window – the text, please, not a screenshot.

  • Unable to install "InstallESD.dmg" file from OS X Mounstain Lion?

    Hi,
Unable to install "InstallESD.dmg" file from OS X Mounstain Lion, i've downloaded OS X Mavericks and installed on other machine. However, i took backup of "Show Package Contents" before installing. When i try to install ""InstallESD.dmg" file some other Mac machine. When i double click on it its open Packages folder instead of installer.
Please suggest me, how can i install OS X Mavericks for My Mac machines.
    Thanks in Advance,
    Suresh Balakrishnan.

Unfortunately with OS X Mavericks you can't use the InstallESD.dmg file as an installer. You have to use either DiskMaker X 3.0.4 or Mavericks Bootable Disk Creation Tool or do an Internet search for the Terminal command that can be used to create a bootable Mavericks installer on an external drive (e,g, USB thumb drive).
You will need the Install OS X Mavericks.app from the Mac App Store to use with all of the above solutions.

  • Splitting DMG file onto multiple disks

So, I've created a ~45GB DMG file to backup some data, and I want to be able to burn it to DVD's.
I've read a little about splitting DMGs using the hdiutil but I'm not familiar enough with the terminal to do it that way.
Does anyone know of an easy way to split a large DMG across multiple disks that can then be loaded to another computer and mounted?
I have Toast Titanium and Stuffit Deluxe, so I know that through a combination of those I should be able to do it.
    Any suggestions?

See [this knowledge base article|http://kb.roxio.com/content/kb/Toast/000007T] on Roxio's site for further info. I quote a passage:
Toast does not need to be installed on the computer to restore.
Please also consult Toast's manual that was installed with the app on your computer. You might want to search for phrases like "spanning" or "restore".

  • Searching content of web application

I need to provide search in my web application. I need some robot that can crawl web sites to gather pages, which is dynamically populated, for indexing. The problem is that I don't know wich search engine to use. Will Lucene feet my needs? or there is other tools?

  • Where is the Lion InstallESD.dmg file?

    Hya
I have bought Lion from from the App Store and installed it on my MacBook with the intention of installing it on more than one device. However now that I go to search for the Installesd.dmg file it is nowhere to be seen.
Did it get removed on successful install on my machine? If so how can I recover it so that I can use it on my other devices? Or is it now a hidden file?
    Mike B

    Two ideas for you.
    1. If you have a time machine backup of your app folder, use that to go and get it again. The actual install DMG is found in the package contents in shared support.
    2. Open the Mac App store, hold down the option key and tap purchased at the top. Keep option key held down and install should appear next to lion. Clicking it will re download it all being well.
    Hope this helps.

  • I have a ipad and i can open a dmg file?

I cant seem to open a dmg file in any of the apps i have on my ipad and i am not very good with technology so i dont know what to do?? Please help!

Unsealer would appear to be a program (the .dmg file) that needs to be run on a Mac.  What it does I've no idea other than to access 'sealed content' which I found from a quick Google search.
Bottom line... you can not access .dmg files on an iPad.  Sorry I can't be of more help.

  • A Desperate Search for a Lost File

i fear that all hope is lost, as it probably is, but i thought i'd post here as a last resort.
basically, i recently formatted my macbook pro's HDD to dual install OS X and a certain Linux distribution (which, as it turns out, was not necessary - but alas).
i backed up everything i needed except for a 10MB AES encrypted .dmg file that i had stupidly hid away.
before i realized that it was gone, i went ahead and installed both operating systems on the formatted drive, along with many gigabytes of software (as of this writing i've used 64GB on my OS X partition alone). the total capacity is ~186GB in base 2.
i've tried filesalvage and data rescue III - filesalvage does not seem to support .dmg files, and data rescue found five disk images, two of which were unmountable (and probably too small to be what i was looking for -- less than 100KB) and one was around 93GB.
could these results in fact contain what i'm looking for, but be corrupted and/or end in the wrong place on disk (particularly in the case of the 93GB image) because of overwriting etc? is there a way, knowing some of the contents of the single Word document in my lost disk image as well as the password, to probe the drive for something resembling its data? until i find an auxiliary drive that can hold 93GB, i cannot examine the 93GB disk image because data rescue insists that i not modify the salvage drive.
i'd be willing to go to great pains in an attempt to find this file (i.e., write my own program to search the device for suitable patterns if anyone knows how i might go about doing that), so any suggestions are welcome.
P.S.: i post this in the unix section because i'm not sure where else to put it; feel free to move it

i suppose i am still in the denial stage of grieving. is there no chance that the disk image exists in the remaining free space of the drive? i mean, if i've only written over roughly a half of the drive's capacity, there should then be a roughly 50% chance that part of the data is there, right?
couldn't one of those anomalous disk images be the beginning of my lost file?
i really just don't want to accept this loss right now. is there absolutely nothing to be done about this lost file?
