Second monitor has a 50Hz refresh rate; my mac's lowest output is 60. What can I do?

I'm trying to get my 13" Late-2011 macbook pro to work with either of two second monitors so I can use logic more easily. One's a DELL thing with a screen res of 1280x1024 (though does work on some higher res') which I had working yesterday till I accidentally knocked the adaptor the slightest bit and now I can't make the second screen stay on for more than a few seconds whatever settings I try. Usually the monitor is on (ie not in power save mode) but just displaying nothing, and my mac behaves as if the second monitor is there.
The other one's a Toshiba 20WLT56B Tv with VGA input. The prob with this one is that it's refresh rate is 50Hz and the lowest option I have for my mac is 60Hz. Is there any way to allow me to output at 50Hz instead?
Cheers

Could be a bad cable or bad Thunderbolt port.

My office just bought me an iMac and I absolutely need to hook up a second monitor but there is no DVI connection on it, just a Thunderbolt. What do I do? Please help ASAP!!! The imac is a 21.5" and they also already bought an HD 21.5 ASUS LCD monitor to attach to it. I'm really trying to make this setup work but this is becoming a nightmare. Any suggestions? I looked up  different VGA adapters but the only options for this would be a usb-vga connection which doesn't work on macs. Can anyone tell me if this new Thunderbolt connection will work in some way? Thanks

Using the Thunderbolt port attach a Mini-display to DVI so long as the Asus display is equipped and capable, otherwise Mini-display to VGA will also work. The Thunderbolt port is ahead devices  which are not yet available to take advantage of the increased capacity in speed. Until the devices and connection cables are available, just use the port as a Mini-display port.

Here's the problem I am trying to research for you...
There does exist a way to add a second monitor via USB:
USB 2.0 to HDMI Audio Video 1080P Adapter for Windows and Macbook
It's the only device I know of that can do that.  The problem is that it wants a HDMI connection.  So that means a HDMI-to-VGA adapter or converter needs to be found (not VGA-to-HDMI, those are easier to find).
    Interesting article realted to this:

Maybe somthing like this converter will work.

my iphone 5 suddenly has a white blank screen,  no liquid contact or history of fall, what can i do with this problem?

    Hey there Galileo,
It sounds like your iPhone screen is solid white and you cannot do anything with it. Take a look at these steps from the following article about that kind of issue:
Get help with the screen on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
If you see a solid color screen (black, white or blue)
Plug in your device to a power source. If you see the low-battery screen when you plug in, let your device charge for at least 10 minutes (20 minutes for iPad) before using it.
Reset your device while it's plugged in.
If resetting doesn’t fix the issue, restore your device.
If you still see the issue after you restore, contact Apple Support.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

There has been no spillage and it has not been dropped.

Do you have access to a USB wired Apple (or maybe even a PC) keyboard?
That may be used to help troubleshoot the internal keyboard and on startup
be able to access (or see if you can) the System, and attempt to see about
troubleshooting. See if it will start in SafeBoot, (shift key held down just after
startup tone, if it runs in safeboot, then login to see if you can read system
logs in Console) and another idea may be to attempt to start in Recovery &
then attempt to use OS X Utilities there to see if you can verify and then to
repair the hard disk drive, and do some checks on the hardware.

Was the computer an Apple official refurbished unit bought direct from Apple?
Did you get an extended warranty from Apple - if it were directly bought there?
Usually these are online purchases from Apple Store; other companies offer
repaired or restored used computers and call them 'refurbished' or they may
have bought actual refurbished from Apple stock; these may be resold on ebay
or via amazon, and may or may not have a residual warranty of some kind.
In some cases the keyboard may fail due to some connection on the logic board
not fitting correctly, or some other loose wire; however if the battery may have
swollen, that could contribute to issues with both trackpad and keyboard.
A visit to an authorized Apple service provider is recommended, or contact the

  • X misdetects LG Flatron F700B as 775FT - 50hz refresh rate

    Hi;
I acquired a LG Flatron F700B today and hooked it up (nice, sharp picture, much nicer to stare at than my venerable, fuzzy Benq V772.) The issue here is that according to nvidia-settings, my computer thinks that this is a LG 775FT.
This wouldn't be so bad, but there's a distinct difference in specifications between the two monitors - the F700B does max. 1280x1024 @ 85Hz, but the 775FT (which X seems to think I have) only does 1280x1024 @ 60Hz. Interestingly, xrandr reports the maximum resolution as 1280x1024 @ 50Hz.
As you can imagine, 50/60Hz makes ones eyes bleed... I've tried editing the Monitor section in xorg.conf with appropriate sync ranges taken from the monitor specs at link [1], but apparently new versions of X just go ahead and autodetect the monitor anyway, which is actually working against me here (autodetection is nice, but only when it detects the Right Thing.)
nvidia-settings only lets me push the monitor up to 60hz.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can 'persuade' X that my monitor Really Can Do 1028x1024 @ 85hz? I'm tempted to take a cudgel to it and see if it plays nice
    Cheers;

Nvidia actually uses refresh rate to report a completely different property, something to do with twinview mode and compatibility with TVs and such  - that's why you shouldn't really worry about what xrandr says...  You can use nvidia-settings to see what the actual refresh rate is, it most certainly isn't 50hz.  If that figure bothers you you can add something like this to the device section in xorg:
    Option "DynamicTwinView" "False"
This will not actually change how the image is displayed but it will make xrandr return the actuall refresh value.
This is what nvidia manual has to say about this:
    Option "DynamicTwinView" "boolean"
Enable or disable support for dynamically configuring TwinView on this X screen. When DynamicTwinView is enabled (the default), the refresh rate of a mode (reported through XF86VidMode or XRandR) does not correctly report the refresh rate, but instead is a unique number such that each MetaMode has a different value. This is to guarantee that MetaModes can be uniquely identified by XRandR.
When DynamicTwinView is disabled, the refresh rate reported through XRandR will be accurate, but NV-CONTROL clients such as nvidia-settings will not be able to dynamically manipulate the X screen's MetaModes. TwinView can still be configured from the X config file when DynamicTwinView is disabled.
        Default: DynamicTwinView is enabled.

The weird value rates are fault of the nvidia driver telling jokes.
But how can i have more refresh rate in 1280x1024 than 1280x960? My monitor is a standard 4:3 crt.
I tried disabling EDIDs and specifying the sync values according to the monitor.
The monitor is a samsung syncmaster 700p.
    Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

I see you have a nvidia card. For nvidia users xrandr displays wrong value. If you want to check exactly what you're running, search some of the monitor options, it should have it in there. Also use the nvidia-settings, but for me at times it too reported wrong refresh rates.

  • X220 uncontrollably switches to 50Hz refresh rate upon unplug from power source

    Hello,
I'd like to reiterate that I LOVE my x220 apart from the few issues I have with it.  Having said that, I am having the (seemingly) ubiquitous problem where the laptop constantly switches to 50Hz when unplugged from a power source.  I have tried reinstalling the Power Manager and Power Manager driver, and all of my system software is up to date.
Just to be certain, is everyone else experiencing this issue as well?  I know T420s owners recently reported it and it was subsequently forwarded to engineering.  As long as a fix is in the works I am happy. :-)

    Hey erik,
I really do appreciate your input.  That's a good idea, though honestly I don't know if I will bother with all of that now. :-)  Perhaps instead if I get a moment in the near future I may try wiping out all Intel graphics drivers entirely from the system manually and then reinstalling.
Having said all of that, on a somewhat unrelated note, I'm getting 4,900+ in 3DMark06, which is shocking!  After experiencing the trouble with the unplug/replug refresh rate switch, I tried a wide variety of solutions including using the 2361 graphics drivers from Intel's site.  This plus my high-speed fan settings at anything over 60C probably helped contribute to the score I guess.
But back to the topic... is anyone else experiencing these same refresh rate switching issues?

  • The refresh rate for Mac mini 2014 at 3840x2160 using Thunderbolt

    Here: http://www.apple.com/mac-mini/specs/
, it says that the refresh rate for resolution 3840x2160 for HDMI is 30 Hz.
I'm wondering if it's the same using Thunderbolt, or more correctly DisplayPort.

If I could ask another question regarding this... is 30 Hz poor even for desktop work? Or movies.
I believe the 30Hz is progressive and therefore for movies/video would normally look quite good. However for sports e.g. soccer which has a fast moving object i.e. the ball it would be less good. I have also seen comments suggesting that for computer use it is also less desirable particularly when you are scrolling as this entails affectively the entire screen image 'moving fast'.
This is not based on personal use as I cannot afford a 4K screen yet myself. However for DVDs 24p is considered a to give a good image for movies and this I can confirm from personal experience so 30p should be even better. Obviously 60p is better still but for that you need either a Mac Pro, iMac or MacBook Pro Retina.
It is probably going to depend on what you will be using it for. Perhaps you should consider spending a little more for a MacBook Pro Retina which can do 60 Hz.

This has me confused. Rebooting the iPad (holding down on the sleep and home buttons until the Apple logo appears on the screen) should not in any way, shape or form, remove content from the iPad.
Then you stated that you chose the option to back up before restarting? There is no option to backup before "restarting" on the iPad. Are you restoring the device in iTunes?

Depending on why it's been disabled you might be able to re-enable it via this page : http://appleid.apple.com, then 'reset your password'
Or you might need to contact Apple : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ - click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page
If it then works on your computer's iTunes but not your phone/iPad then try logging out of your account on the phone/iPad by tapping on your id in Settings > Store (Settings > iTunes & App Stores on iOS 6) and then log back in and see if that 'refreshes' the account on it
