  • Printing problems after installing Security Update 2015-002

After installing Security Update 2015-002 on three separate computers on two different WiFi networks, printers on the network are losing their connections to the computers that can print to them. We have experienced this on a network running a Canon printer and an HP printer - both have disappeared on the network although the printer suggests it is still connected to the network. The same thing has happened on a separate network I manage with a single HP printer on that network. I have tried removing the printers, resetting the printers etc. Nothing is working. I can get one print out of a printer when I turn the printer off and then on. Three minutes later the printer is no longer connected to the computer - although still connected to the network. Please Help.

I think I have figured out that it is in fact the Apple Extreme Base Station that is losing the printer. It is very odd because the printer is connected to the Wifi. My computer is connected to the WiFi and connecting to the internet. The Router for the internet can see the printer. An Apple Extreme is then connected via a network cable in Bridge mode to the router. When I turned the power off the The Apple Extreme and then restored power it all worked. was still working this morning, but again this afternoon I needed to reboot Apple Extreme. It is quite strange that this is happening on two different Networks in different parts of the country at the same time. Maybe the Security Update is somehow affecting/blocking communication with the printer? I just don't know enough. These networks have been up and running with the same printers and computers for years with zero problems - all of a sudden we have the same problem on both Networks.
Any help will be very much appreciated.

  • Finder(?) problem after installing security update 2008-008

I hope someone can help with this problem:
After I installed Security update 2008-008 the finder(?) has begun to behave irratically.
Whenever the mousepad is clicked, the dock slides off to the left and the click is not registered by whichever application I am in. Mostly menus are affected. I now have to click the application and menu item several times before the click is registered.
Safari is particularly badly affected with the pointer jumping around the screen when trying to copy an url (dock keeps sliding to the left), page back/forward doesn't work - url links within web pages are not recognised. Furthermore, when using yahoo mail, menus like 'send' and 'save' are not recognised.
Any suggestions how to resolve this problem would be greatly appreciated!
    Andrew

    HI Andrew,
This is most likely caused by some 3rd part APP or kext that is now out of date.
Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then test your problem there.
Now reboot in regular mode, if the problem didn't happen in Safe Mode, but does in Regular mode, See if there is anything relevant in...

  • Starting Problems after installing Software Update SecUpd2009-001ppc.pkg

    Hey Guys,
After installing the SecureUpdate from January 2009 today my iMac just seems to freeze at startup. Only thing appears is the grey apple and the loading animation.
*Already tried Disk Utility, fsck, and Safe Startup.*
    +-Disk Utility doesn't find any problems+
    +-fsck doesn't find any problems either+
    +-Safe Startup just doesn't work+
What i found here in the discussion forum is the solution with the terminal. Only thing is that I won't get further till following point 6:
    *(post from nleoncavallo )*
    0. Use a second computer to download the update to a USB drive. (in theory, I imagine the update is somewhere on the hard drive, but I don't know where)
    1. Boot from the original install CD (pressing the "C" key while the computer starts)
    2. Get up to the point of the installation screen, then start Terminal
    3. type "mount" to see a list of the volumes
    4. type "find /Volumes/thenameoftheUSB/*.dmg" to get the full path of the update file (so you can copy it and paste it in step 5).
    5. type "hdiutil attach /Volumes/thenameoftheUSBdrive/pathoftheupdate/SecUpd2008-008Intel.dmg" (now you have mounted the update file)
    *6. type "/Volumes/Macintosh\ HD/usr/sbin/installer -pkg /Volumes/Security\ Update\ 2008-008/SecUpd2008-008Intel.pkg -target /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD"*
    7. Exit Terminal and select "Startup Disk" and reboot.
I _already checked Typo_ and i am really going crazy about this. What terminal replys:
    +"-bash: /Volumes/Macintosh HD/usr/sbin/installer: No such file or directory"+
    Can somebody help me?

Thank you for your fast reply!
Maybe I should have made it clearer. This problem I've got adheres with the software update I've installed. I tried the solutions out you send me with your link but they didn't help me out. Thing is, that i forgot to say:
After a while the grey screen disappears and instead a blue screen comes to vision. But thats it. Then nothing happens anymore.
So far, the terminal thing gives me the most trustful feeling in this. So I still need help!

  • Problems after installing Client update

Ok...here's the dealio. A few nights ago I was trying to push some pictures to my Mother-in-law's G4. I got an error stating that her version of software didn't allow the file transfer. So, I remotely, on her G4, went to the apple website and dowloaded and installed 3.1 to her machine. However, during the installation of the update, I lost contact with her machine. A couple of days have gone by, and I've tried everything I can think of. I called her and walked her throught the installation process to verify that it was installed properly.....But I can't regain a connection.
Does anyone have any suggestions?? There are 3 states between us, and her husband has recently passed away. I was supposed to be able to help her remotely, but it's not looking to promising. I know, collectively, we can work this thing out.
One last thing...I set up a user on her G4 named, (longname) "Remote Assistance", (short name) ARD and I also gave this user complete access and administrative rights. I also had her check to verify that this user still existed and the it's priveledges hadn't changed.
Power Book Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   My First Mac!!

I'd like to add this too. I had to do some port forwarding in her Xsense router. I checked to make sure I could remote into her computer before I left her area. Now, I'm at my parents house and I was able to remote into the G4 before I installed the update. I didn't do anything to my Parents router before or after the install of the update...so I don't think this router is part of the problem. I'm just working through the problem as y'all can tell......
    Thanks in advance.....

  • Heat is a problem after installing SMC Update

My MacBook Pro (Week 11, 1.83GHz, 80GB 5400RPM, 2GB RAM) had the whine-buzz and the mooing sound. However, I had no problems with the heat.
I installed the SMC Update and it fixed the mooing, but heat over the left-hand side of the keyboard and beside the trackpad is now a problem.
This is strange because most users reported that the heat issue was repaired after installing the SMC update. I used to be able to put it on my lap and it was warm, but not hot. Now, it is too warm to put on my lap, and my hands feel too warm over the keyboard and I need to take frequent breaks.
Should I consider getting this machine looked at?

  • Error processing calendar data (210) after installing Sec Update 2010-1

When we were first setting up the web calendar, we had some trouble with 210 errors because the directory we were storing the calendar data in didn't have the right permissions. We reverted the data store to the default location Library/CalendarServer/Documents, with the Documents folder having the _calendar user as owner, with read & write access, the _calendar group having read only access, and everyone having no access.
    This hasn't changed.
However, after installing the Sec Update 2010-1 last night, we're getting 210 errors again. Any ideas?

Looks like it's a DNS issue for me

  • Problems after installing Security Update 2008-02

I have a PPC G4 (1.65GHz/512 MB RAM), patched to 10.4.11. Before running the 2008-02 patch yesterday, I cloned my system to an external drive, ran Onyx (run all maintenance scripts/delete caches/repair permissions). I also uninstalled Miro 1.1 (intending to do a clean install of 1.2) and uninstalled Flash (intending a reinstall). I turned off ClamXAV/Clam Sentry. Updated using Software Update. Process seemed to go smoothly. After it completed, I shut the system down, waited a few minutes, then powered back up. System seemed fine.
Doubleclicking on the flash install dmg gave me the following error:
The following disk images failed to mount
    Reason: No child processes.
I got the same message trying to install Miro.
Thinking the images were corrupted. I re-downloaded them on a PC, tranferring them via flash drive. Same error. Thinking perhaps the flash drive was corrupted, I tried again with a different flash drive. Same error.
I downloaded the standalone file, thinking to rerun it. Same error.
Logged in via safe mode. Same error.
Reran onyx. Shut down. Same error.
Trying logging in under a different admin profile. It did not recognize the password. I logged back in under my normal admin profile; reset the password on the backup admin profile. Still unable to log in. Back again and created a new backup admin profile. Tried running the Miro dmg under that; same error.
Can the security update be uninstalled? That or any other suggestions greatly appreciated.
    TIA,
    shn

Sorry for the delay in replying -- I had put the install disks in a safe place -- so safe that it took me a while to find them <g>.
Booted off the install disks and ran repair permissions (there were a few, most involving changes from read-only to execute). Verified the disk. Rebooted.
    Problem not solved.
Shut down. Did a few chores <g>.
On restart, I got a message that the system had encountered a problem & I needed to shut down. Powered down. Waited a couple of minutes before powering up (successfully). Thinking that, given the permissions repair, I should rerun the the update manually, I tried rerunning the patch. Same error message.
Shut down & waited a couple of minutes before rebooting into safe mode in backup admin profile. tried rerunning the security patch manually. Same error message.
Further suggestions would be most gratefully accepted...

  • AirPort problem after installing Security Update 2007-007

Help! I installed the security update 2007-007 on my Mac mini os x and now my AirPort is not detecting any signal. Should I backup the system and then reboot? I'm not really sure what to do. I have tried almost everything I can imagine. I checked through the user logs and all was functioning properly until the update installed. All of the settings for the network and internet connect say that they have failed.
Please help! I am not particularly familiar about backing up -- how do I do this? (please spell out for me, I'm really new to mac!)
    Thanks in advance

  • X301 problems after installing driver updates - won't come out of sleep mode

We have a new X301 with Vista 32 installed. Things were working fine until I ran system update the other day. I've set the power options so not shutdown hibernate, however, after a period of time the system seems to go to sleep or to a screen saver and will not come out of whatever state it is in. The only solution is to power off/on the system.
I have an X500 where there were display driver problems if there was an external monitor (dual monitor) attached. The only thing I can think of is that either there is some similar issue with the X301 since we have an external monitor attached or there is something that was messed up with the drivers that were installed. I do have (for now) restore points before these drivers were installed but I'm not ready to take that drastic step yet (or a full system restore and start over).
Anyone experience this type of issue or have any suggestions?
    Thanks
    Neil

Sadly, I had the issue resurface today. It went into standby/sleep mode while I was in a meeting (on battery power), and later I tried to wake it, and all I got was a black screen with a mouse cursor.
The keyboard brightness and volume keys on the keyboard were responsive (I could hear the audio level clicks as I changed it), but the visual overlay didn't show (where it shows the white speaker graphic with the bar of rectangles representing volume level). Also, the screen brightness keys did nothing.
I finally used Ctrl + Cmd + Power to force a restart. Luckily, my user account didn't get completely hosed like it did a couple weeks ago.
So, it looks like Migration Assistant isn't the culprit here. This is the system I just finished rebuilding. So it's either a bug in OS X/Mavericks, or it's due to an application I have running, or a configuration change I've made.
It seems to only happen when I'm on battery power, for what that's worth. I don't recall it ever happening when I'm plugged in. I have Power Nap disabled while on battery power, btw.
I'm going to enable SSH access so I can try to SSH in the next time this happens. Perhaps that will provide useful diagnostic info.
Anyone have any tips or suggestions?

    Hi Terry,
I too downloaded the curent updates today.
    1.
    a. On opening an existing project there was no red X or an error message
    b. There was no problem on opening a new project also
Is there anything that you could add to this?
    2. Cleaning a project (both exisiting and new projects) went through smoothly.
    3. I was able to run an existing project and also a new application which I developed after the downloads.
In your case, were you able to run the application before downloading the updates?
So could you pls give us more details of how you encountered these problems.
    Cheers :-)

  • Is it possible to change zero options in "Secure empty trash"?

In the "Secure Empty Trash" feature in Tiger, is it possible to change the settings regarding how many times the file being deleted is zeroed out? Can I choose a 1-pass or a 7-pass, etc?

I don't think the "Finder" itself offers a way to change the number of overwrites performed during a "secure empty trash". Note that "secure empty trash" just calls '/usr/bin/srm', using the '-m' option -- 7 passes, including zeroes, FF, F6 and random according to the 'man' page.
Depending on what you are after, and being mindful of the different possible paths for items in the "Trash" in OS X, you might be able to use 'srm' directly, using the options of your choice. Though not recommended, if you get into hacking system files, the options probably can also be changed to some extent from there.

  • Secure Empty Trash not 100% safe

Recently I use finder to enter directly into Firefox's cache files and move all the files into the Trash. Next I use Secure Empty Trash.
After that, I used Data Rescue II to see what i can find.
I am very surprised to find most of the images that i have securely deleted.
I know the best way is to use Disk Utility's erase free space function, but if Secure Empty Trash is going to write the data 35 times over, and still can't get the job done.
Then using Erase free space's 35 times write-over isn't completely safe too?

Normally when a file is deleted insecurely, the data isn't deleted at all - the only thing that is removed is the reference to the data in the file catalogue. Overwriting a file even once (let alone 35 times) should prevent recovery by programmes like the one you mentioned that are designed to detect unlinked files and create new catalogue entries for them. Given the above, a few possibilities come to mind that could account for your observations.
One is that the files you recovered were not the ones you thought you deleted. For example, working with "TextEdit.app", any time a previously saved document is modified, an invisible "autosave" copy is created on the hard drive, intended to preserve any modifications in case the programme or computer crashes. This copy is removed insecurely once the changes are manually saved. If the original is then securely erased, it will be unrecoverable. However, data recovery programmes can easily recover the remnants of the multiple intermediate "autosave" files. I have no idea how "FireFox" works with cache files, but perhaps what you recovered was remnants from previous times you visited the sites that were cached in the files you securely deleted.
A second, less likely possibility is that your files were recoverable due to a design flaw introduced in Leopard's version of "Secure Empty Trash" (I haven't tested recently so I don't know if the issue has since been addressed). It is possible to configure it so that files are not securely deleted, even when selecting the option. However, such a configuration would not be a random occurrence - basically, a user would have to set it themselves, although malware or a malicious person with access to your account could do the same...
A third possibility, perhaps related to the second, is that in Leopard, regardless of whether the over-writing stage of "secure empty trash" succeeds or fails for any reason, the process will still continue to the unlinking stage, in effect deleting insecurely. Prior to Leopard, if over-writing failed, the file would not be unlinked, which had at least two benefits: i) since the file was never insecurely deleted, it would not be necessary to initiate a time consuming "erase free space" procedure to ensure that the data was destroyed; and ii) the very presence of the file serves as feedback to the user that the procedure has failed, unlike in Leopard where it fails silently.
Either way, using "erase free space" shouldn't be affected by these issues. If the file has been deleted (i.e. copies do not still exist in a hidden cache file somewhere), then overwriting "free space" should prevent basic recovery software from restoring it, assuming the procedure is allowed to run to completion.

  • Secure Empty Trash vs. Empty Trash

I just finished editing many gigs of old video footage and I am ready to delete them. Should I use the Secure Empty Trash-In the Finder (which will most likely take a long time to delete) versus just Empty Trash...I know S.E.T. will completely remove the files which make them unrecoverable. If I delete by using just the empty trash...am I still taking up HD space?
    Thanks...
    Henri

    Hello,
When you empty the trash, the files are still physically there. But, the space they occupied is marked as available for use. So, they are not taking-up any space. That space is immediately freed, and made available for use by the next program or file that needs it.
But, because it is stored magnetically, that file can be retrieved by manually (or with a special program) going back and locating where that file was stored and re-assigning a name and a pointer to it.
The only difference between regular empty trash and secure-empty trash, is that the secure option will immediately over-write that deleted file's space with garbage a couple of times to make it more difficult for someone to recover (or undelete).
That is the only difference. Otherwise, the space is still storing magnetic information regardless of which method you use. But, it is not wasting space either way. The space is marked as free, and will be used as needed.
    I hope this helps.
