Security Update 2012-002 Won't Install

I have been attempting for some time now to install the latest Security Update 2012-002 on my Macbook Pro running OSX v.10.6.8.
Upon restart as the computer is about to fully boot up it simply shuts off. I have run Apple Disk Utility as well as MacTuneUp several times.
The machine seems to be in fine working condition and accepts all other software updates except this one.
Any suggestions or fixes out there?

Hi Jonathan:
What's your hard drive capacity like? You should try to maintain at least 1-2 GB free.
Also, how long have you had 512MB RAM? Have you recently upgraded? Poor-quality RAM could affect software updates. If this applies, remove any recently installed RAM and try the update. If successful, replace the RAM (though I'd get the RAM replaced).

  • Security update 2014-002 won't install, stuck on gray Software update screen

My mac mini has been trying to install this security update the past week.  It asks for me to restart, when I do it gets stuck on a Software Updater page or gray screen.  The only way I can proceed is the shut the computer down by manually holding down the power button.  When I restart it shows the update not applied.
I've tried downloading the update directly and applying and no difference.  Any ideas?
    Thanks

The worst of these background programs, MacKeeper requires you remove it with third party instructions:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3036
You should not use cache cleaners on any system other than a backed up system.
You should not multitask while attempting to back your data.
Open the Activity Viewer to determine what other processes may be running and determine if one of those is one you recognize that is third party.
Antivirus and firewall software are not essential, unless you practice unsafe computing in the first place.  In those instances ClamAV and Sophos are probably the best bets about being the least intrusive.

  • Security Update 2006-002 won't install

I've tried about 10 times, each time it gets to the point of writing but stops at 66% completion. Then tells me the software failed to install. Anyone else having trouble? This has happened to me on the last few updates. Could it be because I'm behind? I don't think it is because this software update says in incorporates the last few upgrades.

  • Security Update 2012-002 Does not install

Every time I go to download this update I always get an error.  It downloads but then upon restart it bombs saying it cannot expand or there is a corruption of the files.
I have repaired permissions, I have updated the Safari update and remote desktop just fine.  Just this doesn't work.  I've also deleted the software.update pref file as suggested in other articles.  All to no avail.

10.5.5 is very antiquated.  10.5.8 as you read was just barely patched in the last week, and hasn't seen patches since before last July, where several patches for 10.6 have already been made available.  Remember 10.7.4 is the current operating system.    Last July was when 10.7 was released.  The only reason you should have 10.5.5 is because you don't need anything newer, or you aren't sure that anything newer will work with what you have, or can't afford anything newer.  Only 16% of the Macintosh community are running some version of 10.5.  To determine if you could use an upgrade, see these tips:

    Allan,
I have Avast virus checker installed, but I disabled file, mail & web browser checking and had the same problem.
I eventually was able to download the manual update DMG and that seems to have installed ok.
Now the Update RAW 6.03 has been installed, but continues to say it needs installing - galling.
Thanks to you and Linc for replying to my original post.

  • Security Update 2007-002 Won't Stay Installed

    Hello All-
I've been trying to download/install Security Update 2007-002 without success. I have tried about 4 different times to no avail. Every time I do download the update, install it and then restart my computer, it's still shows up in my Software Updates that need to be downloaded. Any ideas as to what's going on? TIA!!

    Many thanks, Bill!
Your hint did work for me! I tryed before to follow the tip at VersionTracker (use Pacifist to extract iChat from the 10.4.8-Combo-updater to replace the language-stripped iChat I had), but that failed. The resulting version of iChat after running 2007-002 reported to be 3.1.7, but crashed at start. Probably because the iChat in the 10.4.8-Combo-updater is Version 3.1.5, and this version also crashes without the update.
In my case, iChat 3.1.6 had only the German and English language files. I use Macaroni to strip unused languages.
The question that remains is: Can I strip the languages from iChat 3.1.7, or will that result in a crash?

  • Security Update 2012-001 Will Not Install

When I try runnng Software Update to install Security Update 2012-001 I get "An unexpected error has occured." at the end of the installation process.  I tried downloading the standalone installer but that fails too.
    Any ideas?

Tried the above suggestions and none of them worked.
I tried an re-install of 10.6 from my system disk and upgrading that.  The combo update fails too.
I tried wiping the partition and doing a complete restore from a Time Machine backup.  Still same error.
When I have time I could try wiping the parition, reinstalling 10.6 and using Migration Assistant instead of a straight restore.
One more thing.  I installed a Boot Camp partition about a month ago.  Could that have something to do with this?
    Thanks.
Possible some  corruption occured to the MBR section of your GPT,  boot sector virus on Windows?
Bad Bootcamp updated the GPT wrong perhaps?
Could be OS X on TM is hosed too, can't trust that then.
Fresh install it is then, cures all ills. Follow on.
Hold c boot off the 10.6 disk, use Disk Utility there to select your entire internal drive on the far left (you got backups right? because all is going bye bye including Windows)
Next chose Erase and Security option Zero All Data, come back after lunch. this will check the drive really good for bad bits/sectors, takes a bit of time though.
Next chose Partiton and Option: GUID, format OS X Extended (J) and give it the same name, click apply. This will rebuilt the GPT in case it was corrupted.
Install 10.6, reboot and update to 10.6.8., c boot off the 10.6 disk and Repair Disk just in case.
Prefereably you should clone your pristine 10.6.8 install first to a blank external drive, you can always option boot off of it.
    http://www.bombich.com/get_ready_for_lion.html
You can then  try restore from TM or just go ahead and install programs from fresh sources and just use Migration Assistant to bring your user back.
If your problems continue after migration assistant, then option boot and reverse clone. how to cherry pick your files off a corrupt TM drive is no easy matter, may need DataRescue $99.
Far as cloning Windows bootcamp later when you reinstall it, you need the free WinClone on Macupdate.com.
you should be fully armed now.
    Good Luck.

An attempt to install Security Update 2015-002 1.0 reproducible hangs for me. The machine reboots, installation starts, quickly goes to "Less than a minute" and then sits there forever. I tried this multiple times, once left it in this state for 8 hours.

  • Security Update 2010-005 won't install.

I have an iMac4,1 with 2gig of RAM and OSX 10.6.5 and when I try to install Security Update 2005-005 I get a message that my volume does not meet requirements for this update. I know my OS is up to date. Could it be that my hardware is too dated? Do I need a newer model?

Was trying to install Facetime which asks for Security Update 2010-005.
    Welcome to Discussions, BWS3RD
The Security Update 2010-005 message is common for users who try to install FaceTime on a Leopard (10.5.x) Mac. The Mac FaceTime beta will not run in Leopard.
Your posted system info shows that you use Mac OS X (10.6.5), but perhaps you are trying to install FaceTime on a Mac that does not meet FaceTime system requirements?
The FaceTime product page http://www.apple.com/mac/facetime/ shows system requirements:
"*Requires Mac OS X v10.6.4 Snow Leopard or later.*"
I always suggest using the latest Snow Leopard version.
If your posted Mac OS X (10.6.5) is correct, use the following method to apply the 10.6.5 Combo before attempting another FaceTime reinstall:
      • Backup your Mac and turn off Time Machine
      • Disconnect peripherals and restart Mac
      • Use Disk Utility to repair permissions
      • Download and install http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1324
      • Repair permissions again immediately following the restart that finishes the update.
      • Download and install a fresh copy of FaceTime
(• Turn Time Machine on again when you are satisfied that everything works.)

  • HT1222 Why has Apple not either removed Security Update 2012-002 or updated it?

It hosed my iMac and a Mac Mini; kernal panic on the first, freeze on startup on the second. iMac is a 2 ghz Core 2 Duo, the Mac Mini a 1.83 ghz Core 2 Duo. I get tired of getting notices to update when I know my system will be brought to its knees if I do.

It had no such effect on mine. There are always some problems with updates that hit some users randomly. And sometimes Apple really screws up, but I don't remember hearing too much about this one here. Seemed, for the most part, rather problem free.
See my recommendations for updating. You could try re-applying it. Might help.

  • HT1338 Unable to install security Update 2012-004

I am unable to update my Mac (OS X Version 10.6.8) with the latest security update 2012-004 despite numerous attempts and even visitng the store and trying to install manually, HELP !
I can check for software updates that are available and click on the install & restart option but when the computer reboots an new software update check produces the exact same results.  The software clearly isn't upadating.  I initially had 2 updates - the other being Java for Mac OS X 10.6 update 11.  After fiddling around for ages I managed to get this update installed by going to the downloads page and installing directly.  However, I have had no sucess with the Security update.  The last Security update installed was 2012-002.  I have tried to find and install Security Update 2012-3 without sucess.

Try reinstalling the Snow Leopard combo update (again).   If it has already been done it won't hurt to do it again on top of the existing one.
    Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1
Restart your machine and then try to download the security update 2012 -004 which I believe is the latest.

  • ITunes 10.7 will not launch after installing the OS 10.6.8 security update 2012-004

This evening I installed the Mac OS 10.6.8 security update 2012-004. I'm posting this to see if others have the same problem, plus to find out if there's a way to uninstall a security update.
All was fine before the update, but now iTunes 10.7 won't launch as it quits unexpectedly and gives me a Problem Report to send to Apple (which was sent).
iTunes will also not launch while logged in under other users. I tried rebooting.
My iMac cannot be updated past OS 10.6.8. I can't live without iTunes.
Let me know If I should post more system info.
    Thanks for the help,
    Carl.

You could try downgrading iTunes to an older version?
Just drag the iTunes.app to the trash and reinstall an older version, you should be able to find one in the Support Downloads, this may fix your problem.
Note, iTunes 10.7 is needed for any devices with iOS 6

  • Can't install Security Update 2012-003 for Leopard

I can't install neither Security Update 2012-003 nor Flashback Removal Update. The installer says the software cannot be installed on my machine. I am on a G5 (PPC) iMac running OSX 10.5.8. What's going wrong? By the way, automatic software update did not find any updates for me. I had to download the updates manually from Apple's software support page.

There is no update or removal tool for PPC machines because Flashback won't run or even install on them.
You should still disable Java in your browsers as some other malware may come along that will work.
