How do I select non-consecutive text in V5.1? I have a new macbook air and am new to apple. This is such a simple thing, surely there is a way.

Some people seem to just bulldoggedly want to head deeper into the swamp.
I was just at the local PC User Group yesterday, listening to their tales of woe.
I carefully and clearly explained why they had their problems, then the few simple steps to avoid them, but they think they HAVE to use IE, they HAVE to do all the complicated and silly things that PC users do.
Down to buying an expensive replacement battery for an ancient laptop, with faulty keys, that was worth less than the battery.
Everything else doesn't even register. I can see how these PC service centres manage to suck all that money from the poor schmucks.

Selecting non-consecutive text in Safari text boxes?

I've been trying to find a way to highlight/select different ranges of text in Safari without luck; I know that selecting consecutive text can be done by holding down "shift", but is there any way to do it with non-consecutive text? TextEdit is able to do this -- I can select a word in one paragraph, hold down the "command" key, and then separately highlight a word or sentence in another paragraph.

I cannot find a way to select non-contiguous text in Safari.
Select>Command>select does not work (as it does in Text Edit.
I am very surprised that I can't locate any information on this via google, yahoo, etc.
The only item I did find is something called "Safari Magic" but it looks pretty old and costs $19.
So here I am hoping to get "truth" from the source (or any kind person).
I'm in Snow Leopard; Safari 5.1.5.

Thanks. I hadn't explored Safari's Extensions (only Firefox's). Your was a good suggestion. Alas - and to my absolute consternation - nothing for selecting non-contiguous text.

Thanks. And as I alluded to Carolyn...this is really odd and frustrating. Not just that this functionality does not exist in an Apple application while it does in other Apple apps, but also that there does not appear to be any Extensions directed at this function.
Can I be the only person in the world who selects and copies random or non-contiguous text from web sites?

In the previous version of pages, you could select non-contigous text. In the new versioin, you cannot.

I have been working in numbers and Excel and need to select some non-consecutive rows or columns and just can't figure out how to do it. I know how in Windows. Any thoughts?

Select non-consecutive files using keyboard

Hi - I am trying to select several files in Finder using keyboard only. Sort of thing you would do with the CTRL key in Windows. I want to select several songs to open in my iTunes, but not all of them. And the songs are not listed one after another. I don't want to use the mousepad as it tends to open one of the selected file if I press the mousepad a tad too long. I just want to quickly scroll with arrow keys and mark the ones I want to select with another key. How can this not be possible on OS X?

Thanks, it's just not helpful. Sometimes you happen to accidentally double-click, epsecially when you are selecting a large number of files. The problem here was that I was trying to select songs from my folder to open in iTunes so that I would transfer them to my iPhone afterwards in one go. The moment I would accidentally double-click wth the trackpad, the entire selection that I had made would open in iTunes and start playing, which meant that I would have to switch to iTunes and press pause. I did not want to put the computer on silence because I had some other music playing on YouTube at the same time. Overall, it's a disturbance. If someone at Apple were smarter, they would have allowed for a simle selection of non-consecutive files by keyboard, as Windows does it. Scrolling and selecting with the trackpad is not very convenient in this case, because you have to use the trackpad and the keyboard (CMD) at the same time. In a situation like this, a user should be able to perform this operation with keyboard only, simply because it is more convenient that way. If Windows with its operating system has been allowing to do this for ages, Apple with its ambition to be smarter and easier than PC should have been able to tackle this problem long time ago.

Hi Experts,
I designed a form in WD and have a requirement, where I need to show up a calendar display of months in which an user should be allowed to select only non-consecutive days from it.
Also I need to get all those selected days at run-time.
Is it possible?? I know that calendar is a standard input of date UI element and totally confused as how I can restrict an user to select only non-consecutive days.
Please clarify and help me in this.

Unfortunately, with the date navigator ui element, we cannot select multiple dates except the date ranges.
Work around solution:
I suggest you to go for row repeater, in which you can place date navigator ui element and user can add multiple rows: also you he can input dates by selecting single dates.
Here you can also restrict the user to select only non-consecutive dates.
Pls refer the wiki for an example:

Try to convince the user with this or you can also for a table with single row.

Help selecting non-continuous text in code editor, please?

I'm editing a list... I want to make a lot of selections at once and edit them at the same time. You know how you can go through files in windows and ctrl+click/select files to move around? I could do this in Notepad++ so I guess I could switch back and forth but that would be a big pain. Any ideas?

Depending on what the edit is, you could use the Find & Replace (CRTL+F) to just click your way through the list items. If the list is all different items, you'll probably have to do it in a word processor. I don't know any way to do it in the code editor.

How to extract non-consecutive pages

I have Adobe Acrobat X Standard 10.0.0 Viewing thumbnails and attempting to select non-consecutive pages then extract the selected pages to a new pdf file. when I select non-consecutive pages and select Extract it automatically high lights all pages between the first selected and last selected. The form presented for extracting seems only to list pages between two numbers not non-consecutive. I want only those selected i.e. page 3,8,16,24. Can you please help me?

Is there a way to choose non-consecutive cells when performing Instant Calculations?

I know how to do an equation to add things up. I've discovered the convenience of the Instant Calculations feature where I select consecutive cells with values, then drag drop the resulting equation from the Sum in the lower left corner of my spreadheet. That works fine if I chose cells consecutively in a column,row, or select by dragging over an area. I haven't found a way to select non-consecutive cells to create a sum, with Instant Calculations, however.

Batch rename files that have non consecutive numbers?

I have a folder with about 100 image files that have non consecutive numbers. Is there a way to rename them all to add something after the numbers (and before file type extension) without changing the numbers?
Example: If I select 111019.003.dng and 111019.007.dng, is there a way to batch rename to 111019.003_tk.dng and 111019.007_tk.dng?
Of course, simply batch renaming w/ a sequence number would change them to 111019.003_tk.dng and 111019.004_tk.dng. Which is no good.
I realize the easiest way around this is to name them correctly the first time, but I am not the photographer.

Extract Non-Consecutive Pages

I have a 1700-page document and need to extract non-consecutive pages. Can that be done? I'm using AA XI for Mac.

One way to do this is to use the "combine" feature. It allows you to add specific pages from an existing PDF to a new PDF.
You would use this feature to select the pages you want to extract by deleting the pages you don't want.
In thumbnail view of Combine Files you can select groups of pages at a time by clicking on a starting page and then shift-clicking on an ending page to select all the pages in between. You can ctrl-click to select individual non-consecutive pages. Hitting the delete key while pages are selected will delete them from the pages to put in the new PDF.
Here are the steps I recommend in Acrobat:
First, select File > Create > Combine Files into a single PDF...
Or "Combine files into a single PDF..." is also listed on the Welcome screen")
In the Combine Files dialog:
Click the Options button in the upper right. Ensure that "Show page numbers in thumbnail view" is checked so you can keep track of your pages.
Click the "Add Files..." button to select your file. Or drag it from the Finder into the Combine Files dialog.
Once the file is present, click the "+" over the file icon to expand the file into its pages.
Using the hints above, select the pages you want. You may also re-order the pages by dragging them.
The thumbnails will retain their original page numbers as you move and delete pages which helps to track what you are doing.
Once you have the pages you want for your new document, click the "Combine Files" button at the bottom of the dialog.

Non-destructive text cutting

I have been trying to find a non-destructive way of cutting text from an image and have come up with nothing.
The only way I have been able to create the effect is by deleting a selection of the text layer from the image which is not something I can then change in the future.
Any advise or tips would be greatly appreciated.

The best way I have found to do what I want is to just re mask the text each time I want to change it. It isn't too time consuming and It should suffice if no quicker solution is available.

If you know the order of the keywords (that is, if 'LAST' must come before 'RESOLUTION'):
WHERE str LIKE '%LAST%RESOLUTION%'where str is the string with accents standardized.
Now, since you're starting with a variable like 'LAST RESOLUTION', you need to convert it to '%LAST%RESOLUTION%', so say
WHERE str LIKE '%' || REPLACE ( :p1_report_search     -- TRANSLATE would work, too
               || '%'Watch out for the "mother is in chemotherapy" problem.
That is, if str = 'AMY''S ORDEAL WITH CHEMOTHERAPY", and :p1_report_search = 'MY MOTHER', you'll get a match, because str contains the 2-character sibstring 'MY' and the 6-character substring 'MOTHER' in that order.
If that's not what you want, then you can search on whiole words only, like this:

This assumes that all words are delimited by spaces.
If you want punctuation or other whtiespace (like tabs) to delimit words, that can be done, too.

Selecting all consecutive paragraphs of the same style in GREP?

Is there anyway to select all consecutive paragraphs of the same style using GREP and append something after it?
My problem is that I need to add a tag to the start and end of all footnote sections, they are not embedded in InDesign, but rather they are simply listed after every section. I've managed to add the tag to the start of every footnote section but how can I use GREP to select all of the footnotes and add the tag after it?
I have tried (among others)
(.+)
but it only finds each footnote one at a time, rather than the whole section's worth of them.
Leaving the Find field blank and just using Find Format will find the whole section but I can't find anyway to append the tag. I tried
$0\rTAG
but it seems to cut a lot of the footnotes out randomly?
There must be a way to do this?

It's possible to have a GREP span multiple paragraphs (use the flag (?s) for this), but I think it would have the same result as your 2nd try, just supplying the paragraph style name. Since that fails, I suspect it's just too much text to fit in '$0'.
How about circumventing the problem in its entirety? Put your paragraph style name in the Find Formatting field, then search for
\r(?!.)
-- this will find the very last hard return in that style "followed by nothing". You can replace it with
\rTAG\r
-- it needs a return right after 'TAG' because otherwise this will be pasted in front of the next (unrelated) paragraph.
