"Selection markers" not visible in Quicktime Pro 7 just purchased

I just bought Quicktime Pro, registered, and it seems everything is fine (all the "PRO" features are now activated. BUT I cannot seem to figure out how to do this one simple thing:
I'm trying to edit my video, and want to delete a short section of it. I've read the manual, and page 29 actually shows the playhead having "In and Out Selection marker" controls that are not on my playhead. I have tried using the I and O buttons to select parts of the video as indicated, but nothing happens!!! All I see is the one slider button, nothing else in the playhead area. And I cannot see a darkened selection as the manual shows, no matter what I do.
This is what the manual says:
"To select a portion of a movie, move the In and Out selection markers. The darkened area between the two markers indicates the selected portion. To fine-tune the selection, select a marker and move it with the arrow keys. You can also move the playhead and press I (for In) or O (for Out) to set the start or end point of the selection, even while the movie is playing."
and
"Tip: To move the In or Out marker to a different position, drag the playhead to the desired position (or use the arrow keys), then press I or O."
Please let me know what, if anything, I'm doing wrong. Thanks, and happy holidays!

Selection Markers not appearing in QTPro 7.5.5??

Some time after installing QTPro 7.5.5, I just noticed that my in/out selection markers are no longer appearing. And no, the "hide selectors.." option is not checked in prefs, although I tried toggling that on and off but nothing changed. I'm able to set in and out markers via key commands, but even then nothing looks like it is selected (although it evidently is, as confirmed by Option+dragging from one window to another). This is happening on all my movie files, even ones I had saved with a previous selection.
Only one of my machines is exhibiting this problem, while the other one with the same versions of OS and QT still shows me the selection markers.
I deleted QT prefs and re-entered my Pro registration, but it's still the same. Any ideas??
I'm on a PPC, running OS10.4.11.

MPEG2 Video is not smooth in Quicktime Pro Player

I have a MBP with Core2 2.4Ghz (2GB RAM, 250GB SATA HDD).
I have a bunch of mpeg2 files downloaded from my Canon HV20 HiDef camcorder. When I play the files with Quicktime Pro with MPEG2 Component, the video looks very very jerky. The CPU usage is not too bad, all other applications behave OK.
On the other hand, if I use VLC to play the same file, the video is lot smoother. CPU usage is roughly the same.
FYI, the video is 1080i.
Can someone suggest some solution? My problem is, I want to watch these videos from Frontrow and VLC is not a solution.
The video plays fine in Windows XP, Vista and even in Linux in any player I tried so far.
This is really killing me, any solution is appreciated. I definitely do not want to go back to Windows for my media.

Quicktime does play DVDs OK. Its not as smooth as VLC, but very acceptable.
However, my MPEG2 video files are Hi-definition files from Hi-definition camcorder. These are 1080i (1920x1080 interlaced) files.
These files play perfectly smoothly on the same Mac when I use VLC player.
When I use Quicktime player, they are very jerky. Its hard to quantify how jerky it is, but just a naked eye guess would be 2 frames out of 5 are vanishing. Sound is smooth though, no hiccups in sound.
I hope that describes my problem better.

.m2v file not playing in Quicktime Pro

I just purchased Quicktime Pro 7.6. I have a bunch of MPEG2 (.m2v) files that worked on my old iMac and am trying to get them to work on my new iMac. When I open the MPEG2 files using Quicktime, I get a "the file is not a movie file" error. Again, these are the same MPEG2 files that worked on my previous iMac. When I open the files using VLC, the video works fine, but it VLC doesn't play MPEG2s with audio, nor can it convert. Any idea why Quicktime Pro would not be working? I've tried the files with and without the .m2v extensions also.

There should be a second, audio file that is associated with the m2v. The m2v container does not have the audio. VLC probably can't find the audio track.
So in other words, you guys are saying that Quicktime Pro does not come with the MPEG-2 player component, and that will be another $20?
Unfortunately, that is correct. Another option is [ffmpegx|http://ffmpegx.com>. It is shareware and costs $15.

Text tracks no longer visible in Quicktime Pro for Windows 7.7.2?

I opened a text track in Quicktime Pro 7.7.2, and none of the text was visible. I verified with a text track that I know used to work a few months ago, and it also was not visible.
I rolled back to Quicktime Pro 7.6 for Windows, and re-opened the files, and they worked again. Has anyone else encountered this issue? I know the 7.7.2 update involved a security patch to the way text tracks were handled.

Have managed to fix this already. Been working the issue for a few days now, and a few minutes after writing the above post I decided to reset the Time Capsule to factory default settings.
After entering all my details again (used same network names, passwords etc) the Time Capsule was rebooted. When it came back on line - guess what? Yep, the MyBook WD drive is now visibile. I can connect via the network from my other machines to the drive, and iTunes is back.
So - thought I would post my resolution in case it helps others.

Have to go to QuickTime Pro just to crop videos?

Just venting here -- not likely anyone can offer any suggestions.
Very disappointed to find that I will have to spend $60 ($30 for me and $30 for my 93-year-old dad) just to crop off the beginning and end of the MP4 videos that we load onto our PCs from our new Kodak cameras. (The cameras were only $65 each, which was the only reason I could afford them.) Bought the cameras for myself and my dad this spring, but most of our videos are of wildlife and pets. That means waiting before and after the animal does something interesting, and that means cropping the beginning and end. With our old Kodak cameras (videos were .mov format) we could do that with basic QuickTime, but not anymore. Apparently gotta go Pro just to make basic cuts. Phooey!
Actually, I don't expect Apple to give away everything free, and wouldn't mind paying something for basic editing options. But Pro isn't basic, and it isn't cheap, especially considering I'd have to pay for it twice.
IMO, Apple should offer a cheaper version that just does the basics.
Not happy with Apple right now.

99 tracks?
While most people may npt ever use all of the possible track allocations, it is still nicle to have the capability available. Here is an example of the most tracks I've ever used for a homemade movie file (which requires QT 7 for playback). It was a Christmas Card I posted for my relatives several years ago...

It sounds like QT Pro is being left to stagnate if it only works with QT 7. Or maybe they are just in the middle of readying a new version.
The current version of QT 7 Pro is the product of nearly two decades of development. Unfortunately, it is based on "old" technology which is being phased out in favor of QT X's "new" technology which is still in its infancy as it continues to be developed over the next decade. Possibly in another 10-15 years, it may (or may not) include (?most?) of QT 7 Pro's current features—but frankly, I doubt it.

My Mid 2009 Macbook pro (Just purchased) will not turn on after hard drive change and ram upgrade

So i purchased a mid 2009 Macbook Pro from a guy with 4 gb of ram and 250gb hard drive. It worked perfectly fine when i booted it with his hard drive and ram installed.
I spilled beer in my old computer (late 2009 15" 500gb hard drive and 8gb ram) but took the hard drive to get tested and it worked fine. i later found out it was from a 2010.
Like an idiot i assumed the pro i just purchased would be able to handle the same upgrades that were in my old computer so i threw in the 500gb hard drive (2010) and the 8gb of ram.
The thing booted up fine, just a bit slow which i chalked up to my hard drive sitting unplugged for a long time.
After about 3 minutes it crashed on me. Confused i replaced the 4gb of original ram back into it. (the 8gb ram was pny i bought from ebay so i thought it could be that) It decided not to turn on or show any lights on the front except for the battery meter.
After this i replaced the original hard drive and still NO LUCK!! im really mad because i am in desperate need of the information on my original 500gb hard drive and im afraid i have destroyed 2 computers and about $1K worth of cash out the window.
HELP please enlighten me on what i have done and if the situation can be fixed.

UPDATE: Problem solved with the old hard drive in it, Now the less pressing issue:
Will the computer run my 500gb hard drive with all my information on it? I need to forward a resume and it is on that hard drive.

Selection indicators not visible

Quicktime Pro 7.2.0
I want to edit a piece out of a Quicktime movie (mpeg2). There appear to be no 'selection indicators' on the player. I can't find any place in preferences to activate the selection indicators, nor does or (o) work to set the in and out.
Any suggestions?

I use Streamclip regularly. And did a quick perusal when I couldn't get Quicktime to do the job. But I couldn't figure out how to 'edit' with Streamclip. I don't have a manual for the beast. Where might I find out some quick instructions for editing with that app.?

Resizing otions not showing in Quicktime Pro

I have Quicktime Pro 7.1 and when I do an export movie, in the options area the size option isn't showing. Nor is the filter. All I'm seeing are compression setting options. I reinstalled and they're still not showing.

Export >Movie to QuickTime Movie is the only clearly marked export option.
It has a separate button for video Settings, QuickTime Filters and Size.
Some of the other export dialogs (AVI export for example) to not allow size or filters. In fact, Filters are only available when you choose Movie to QuickTime Movie.
Other export dialog windows force you to choose a video codec before it can determine what size options are allowed using that codec. The location of the movie dimension settings are a bit different in every export option.
Some of these can be adjusted after export by using the Movie Properties Visual Settings tab and entering new values.

MPEG 2 component not installed in Quicktime Pro

My first symptom is: I try to extract a file from a DVD using MPEG Streamclip, and I get a message that says MPEG 2 is not installed in my computer.
But I have Quicktime Pro, Final Cut Pro and Compressor installed in my computer. I have checked the Quicktime folder in the library and the component is there. But when I try to export a file as a MPEG 2 movie either from inside Final Cut using the Quicktime Conversion option or from Quicktime itself, I do not see the MPEG 2 option! Why is this???

PS: My DVDs are not protected, they are of my own work!

What I really wanted to do was: import my own videos from DVDs I made, add them to a DVD Sudio Pro project of my work (my digital portfolio) and then burn this project back to DVD - encoding them back to DVD. It was my understanding that in order to work with them in DVD SP, they had to be either .mov or mpeg2.
DVDSP normally expects a conversion compatible QT compression format or MPEG-2 "elementary stream" (i.e. M2V video file referencing a separate AIFF audio file or paired M2V and AC3) files.
Any idea how to fix this?
You may have run up against an upgrade incompatibility. I used to use FCP v4.5 with the then contemporary versions of Compressor and DVDSP. As soon as i upgraded to leopard, my MPEG-2 encoder, Compressor, and DVDSP either failed to work at all or only partially functioned. As I always keep an earlier OS handy on one or more hard drives, I quickly learned these applications still worked when I booted up using Tiger. For several months I continued to work by reverting to Tiger when needing to use the affected applications. In April, I finally "bit the bullet" and purchased a used copy of FCS2 over the Internet. Now everything (except my old MPEG-2 encoder component) works under Leopard. Not sure if this may be the basis for your problems but if you can boot up in Tiger and re-initialize the problem applications, then you can easily test whether or not an OS incompatibility is the root of your problems here.

Some avi-files not playing on QuickTime Pro 7.0.4

I tried to play a few avi-file movies using QuickTime Pro 7.0.4 on my Mac OS X 10.4.4, but unfortunately, I keep getting the message: "Some necessary QuickTime software is missing. It may be available on the QuickTime Web site." After going on that site, I downloaded some of the available free software, but the problem remains. Playing the movies with a third-application like the VLC, works fine. I wish QuickTime Pro would have the same capabilities in playing avi files like other Players. Do you have an idea how I can solve the problem?

Thanks for all your help guys. I guess I will remain with the VLC for playing AVI files that donnot play on the QT Player as the VLC plays almost any movie file. I came across an interesting article regarding the subject:
QuickTime: About Playing .AVI Files
Learn why an .AVI file may not play as expected in QuickTime Player.
AVI stands for Audio Video Interleave. The .AVI format is what is known as a container format. It specifies a way in which a file may contain audio and video data. It does not specify how that data is encoded. The encoding of audio and video data is specified in what are known as codecs. A codec (short for COmpressor/DECompressor) tells the computer how to decode the audio and video tracks that have been encoded within the .AVI file. QuickTime Player can use numerous codecs by default. You can also add additional codecs to extend QuickTime's features using plug-ins or third-party installations.
When QuickTime opens an .AVI file, it checks to see which codecs were used to encode the audio and video tracks within it. For example, an .AVI file may contain a video track encoded in the Cinepak codec and an audio track encoded with the ALaw 2:1 codec. If both the audio and the video were compressed using a codec that QuickTime can use, the file will play normally. If the audio or video or both were created using codecs that QuickTime cannot use, you may see a message like the following:
"QuickTime is missing the software needed to perform this operation. Unfortunately, it is not available on the QuickTime server"
or
"You may experience problems playing a video track in "filename.avi" because the required compressor could not be found."
These messages are not an indication that anything is wrong with QuickTime Player.
Lists of audio and video codecs included with and supported by QuickTime are available from the QuickTime specifications page.
Using QuickTime Player, you may be able to determine which codec was used to compress an audio or video track:
QuickTime 6 and earlier
Open the file in QuickTime Player.
From the Movie menu, choose Get Movie Properties.
From the left pop-up menu in the Properties window, choose Sound Track or Video Track.
From the right pop-up menu, choose Format. The Format section shows the codec.
QuickTime 7
Open the file in QuickTime Player.
From the Window menu, choose Show Movie Info. The codec is listed next to Format.
If the .AVI file is encoded using a codec that is not included with QuickTime, you might be able to find and add that codec so QuickTime can play media encoded with it. Contact the party that publishes or distributes the codec to see if a QuickTime version is available. Many third-party QuickTime components are available on the QuickTime components page.

Itunes will not open on new computer just purchased???? Im going crazy here

I just purchased a new Gateway computer and I downloaded the new version of Itunes,,,, all of that went well... When I plug my ipod up and when It comes up on the menu bar and I try to open it...it opens a screen that shows My ipod in picture, the version of it, options it shows the capacity of gigs. etc. but it will not open the contents of the ipod so I can move songs around and downloaded new ones onto it....I hope this makes some since..Im lost ..Please help...

Just hit the arrow of the lefthand side of the ipods name then select "Music" below the ipods name

If you bought it from an authorized retailer, then you can return it within 14 days. if you bought it elsewhere, then you're subject to whatever their return policy is. Either way, it is not considered user upgradable. It can be done, but Apple won't do it.

Routine in DTP. Selection conditions not visible

I am under BW7.0
I am filtering data with a routine in a DTP. The routine is reading a custom table that user maintain. It contains a date range.
This works, the correct data is selected.
My problem is that in the request the 'Selection Conditions' field is empty and consequently, I cannot delete in the cube the same selections.
This was working under BW3.5..
