Selection Tool / Masking Feature
Lightroom needs a way to make individual adjustments to selected areas of an image.
Currently, I create three or more versions of each image with different adjustments, export those images as TIF, import them into photoshop layers, mask the layers and do my burning and dodging, then import the final TIF into lightroom, and delete all the extra TIFs.
This works, but it's getting old pretty fast!
I would be surprised if this happens. That is what Photoshop is for.
However, I think since Adobe opened pandora's box with the whole keep it
RAW, keep it lossless editing that we will continue to see people asking for
features like this even though they are according to Adobe inappropriate for
Lightroom. However having to take your RAW image to a bitmap to do this kind
of work in Photoshop is a pain.
What I would like to see is Photoshop work with Lightroom in such a way that
the image is brought over in to Photoshop in RAW, you do your changes
completely in RAW and lossless and then move back over to Lightroom and your
changes appear. If you have features in the image like layers, layer masks,
etc. that Lightroom can't use it simply displays the final result but
doesn't provide access to editing them unless you go back over to Photoshop.
Now I understand this would take a lot of work for both Lightroom and
Photoshop, however Adobe did open the box and give a taste of working with
our RAW images without having to convert to bitmap first. I hope they keep
on this line and give us a totally RAW workable Photoshop without having to
convert or even go through ACR first. It just loads the images, keeps it RAW
and then allows us to use the Photoshop tools on it, save it as a RAW (DNG)
with all of the information in meta-data. Somehow I doubt this will ever
happen. Adobe is a lot of things, but they aren't THAT cool!

Acrobat: How can I turn off the "smart" feature of the select tool
I am trying to figure out how to turn off the feature of the select tool in Acrobat which auto-completes words of my text selections. This feature is a huge nuisance while trying to select code in my textbooks and has caused me to mis-copy examples many times.
The smartness I am referring to is when I try to select text Acrobat will attempt to automatically select the entire word (I can reverse the whole word selection by selecting back one character then going forward, but when I reach the first character of the next word Acrobat will again try to select the entire word). Worse is when I am trying to select text starting in the middle of a word, Acrobat will automatically select the entire word when I get to the last character.
In another program this option is disabled by a clearing the checkbox "When selecting, automatically select the entire word".
I've found an alternative PDF solution which does not have this nuisance, however, this is not an ideal solution... -
Can't select layer mask, also some tools not working -- in CS2
Photoshop 9.0.2 on WinXP Pro (3 GB RAM; Used space: 18.4GB; Free space: 214GB; Video card: 256MB ATI Radeon X1300PRO)
Hi, I have a couple image layers (each created by merging several others) that each also have a mask attached. I cannot get the layer mask selected on either one. I have found that I can delete the layer mask, and start with a new one and make edits, but it is a one-time shot: once I de-select it I cannot get back to it to make any further changes. (I have only a standard mouse, not a Wacom tablet/pen mouse, nor does anyone nearby, or perhaps even in the building. See: http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.3bbfe832 )
Also, when I have the layer selected and try to draw on it (in black) with the Brush tool, it paints red. Then I was able to Erase the red brush strokes just a minute ago without disturbing the integrity of the image. However, I just tried it again and more red was painted onto the image layer (in the currently assigned size of the Eraser).
Incidentally, yesterday and this morning I couldn't get the Eraser tool to do *anything* at all.
Everything I *can* do does show up in the History palette.
I also just happened to notice that when I select any layer in the doc that the small frame appears around the thumbnail to indicate it is selected, but that the entire row itself does not become highlighted as it normally does. And when I check the eye to make the layer disappear, the red brush strokes (both from the Brush and Eraser) still show.
I generally work on a network, but after I started having these problems I moved the file to my desktop and have worked from there since early yesterday with apparently increasingly odd issues. I have a co-worker who experienced the same inability to select the layer mask a couple days ago, but his system has since returned to "normal" (and while continuing to work across the network). Thanks!>, but obviously need to brush up on the details.
you really should. imo, the quick mask is one of the best and most flexible selection tools available in photoshop! you should either check out the help on it (F1) and/or google for some tutorials.
I set mine (double click the quick mask icon in the tool bar) so that painting black paints a "selection" rather than a "mask" (painting white clears the selection). in that way, the quick mask tool in effect becomes a quick selection tool that can take advantage of all your various brushes and brush effects (opacity, flow etc.) when making or adjusting selections. -
I have been continually annoyed, when creating a vector mask-heavy document, with trying to select vector mask points by dragging a rectangle only to find that it instead selects a layer higher up which has a larger vector mask.
The only workaround is to manually select the points of my mask or to drag a rectangle from outside the canvas, meaning I have to zoom out or scroll to the edge - sometimes annoying if I am zoomed in quite far.
Does anyone know any resolution for this?
I know that the move tool can be set to automatically select a layer, depending on what part of the image is clicked, but why is there not an option to turn this off for vector editing? What version of Photoshop are you using????
The White Arrow tool is the direct selection tool and it work best way you point it at a path segment line and click once. When you do all the control points in a close path segment will be marked with little squares and the two control point adjacent to where you clicked will have handles you can adjust.
You can also drag out a rectangle with the direct selection tool. When you do you may select many closed paths in a path a path may have many sub paths and each has a mode like add, subtract, intersect etc, and each has a stacking order like in a layer stack. So if you drag out a rectangle many paths control points will be marked and control point adjacent to crossing rectangle will have handles. Can be very confusing.
Here are two screen capture the first on shows the layer palette and path palette. You can see many shapes and path with sub paths and modes. I also targeted layer a vector mask. The selected the direct selection tool and in the image window I pointed at the 45 degree oval path near the top right. You cab see the four control points and two with handles. The second screen capture I only captured the image window. I used the direct selection tool and draged out a rectangle and you cab see many segments control points and many have handles. I have no problem selecting what I want to select -
anyone else have the issue of using selection tool, then going to brush the areas not wanting to be selected after using refine edge, new mask with layer, the paint tool making the selected area completely exposed, or painting on black and not exposing the actual area desired?

Can you add the brush selection tool to CS4?
Elements 7 has a really cool brush selection tool. I could really use it in CS4, 'cause now I have to move my file back and forth between programs.
There's two features you should look into, quick mask and quick selection. I think you'll find quick selection to be the feature you're after.
Quick selection:
http://help.adobe.com/en_US/Photoshop/11.0/WSFD9BA8C5-31BA-4fec-81F3-CF04EE5295FCa.html
Quick mask:

I am considering upgrading from CS3 to CS 5 and the feature I'm most interested in is the new selection tools that can be used to knock out the background. I have found myself doing this often with photos that have not been taken with this task in mind. There is often poor contrast between the background and forground both edgewise and colorwise. My subjects are often cats with lots of hair and whiskers.
I've seen a brief demo on the adobe site and of course the image used is a slam dunk. A plain background with lost of good edges and contrast. I've used Vertus Fluid Mask I it works pretty well, though I find I have more work to do to refine the results in photoshop.
Has anyone used the selections tools on difficults images? What do you think of them?
johnnyI've done a number of foreground/background isolation projects, and the Quick Selection Tool coupled with the Refine Edge capabilities do seem to work pretty well in real practice. Most of the trick is in getting to know the Quick Selection Tool well, to be able to quickly get a slightly conservative initial selection. There's a lot of very good information that's gone over VERY quickly in Russell Brown's video on the subject on Adobe TV, but he's right on the money.
Add to that the ability to do Content Aware Fill, which is invaluable for super quickly getting rid of things in images, making up new backgrounds where subjects used to be so they can be blurred, etc., and Photoshop CS5 really is a must-have.
But the best thing you can do is download the evaluation and use it yourself for a month.
Be prepared for a bit of UI turmoil, as CS5 for you will be the culmination of changes to both CS4 and CS5. Some of the UI changes are programmable, and a few you will just have to get used to. As a CS3 user now, for example, you may find that "tabbed" view is not to your liking (it seems that most hate it at first). But try to use it for a few weeks - it does grow on you and it does have some advantages in usability.
Another thing the evaluation will do is prove whether your computer is up to the task of accelerating the Photoshop display (through OpenGL). If your video card is more than a few years old and is no longer receiving driver updates from the manufacturer you may want, for example, to upgrade it.

When I use a selection tool in full photo edit mode, the unselected portion becomes tinted with a reddish overlay. How do I eliminate that feature?
Your probably using the Selection Brush Tool in the mask mode.
Change the mode to selection in the tool options bar.

Photoshop CC 2014 crashes when I try to use any 3D tools or features?
I am a college student and going to be in a real bind as soon as this next semester starts without this working properly. We just started touching 3D features in Photoshop last semester but now i have advanced Photoshop this next semester and this will seriously kill my grade without this working. I have a toshiba laptop C55DT-A5106 with AMD A6-5200 HD 8400 processor and graphics running Windows 8.1 pro build 9600. Photoshop works fine until i use any 3D features, then i select the tool or feature, it asks me would i like to switch to 3D workspace, I click yes or no(it doesnt matter they both result in the same thing happening) then I get the pop up box saying Photoshop has stopped working and needs to close the program. I have had adobe photoshop support working on trying to fix this for weeks now and they cannot figure it out. They have been on my laptop remotely many times and they cannot figure it out. They say they have to contact the software engineer next. Just figured if someone else has incite on what the problem could be that would be great. I and the support team have exhausted all known usual fixes. I have tried 4 different drivers including two betas drivers. tried 3 different chipset drivers. uninstalled and reinstalled many times, adjusted preferences in photoshop different ways(myself and by adobe support), created an administrator account and tried running in that instead of my normal account, tried running in safe mode, and finally completely reformatted hdd and fresh installed windows again. They all did the same thing no matter what i tried crashed at the same place with the same error in the events. the following are the errors in windows event log.

After the recent upgrade my print button disappeared from the Menu Bar. I tried to customize the menu bar by adding back the print button but the button does not appear in the list of 'Additional Tools and Features' in the left hand window. I cant locate the print button anywhere.
Move your mouse to the top of the Firefox window, then right click.
You will see a menu of the available toolbars. Select '''''Customize'''''.
In the new window, look for the icon. When you find if, hold down
the left button on it, and move it to where you want it to be.
You can move any of the icons you want from here, but some
icons are locked in place. -
Selections tools not working properly in Photoshop CC 2014
Just installed Photoshop CC 2014. For some reason I cannot get my quick selection tool and quick mask to work properly. I can make a selection but when I try to make a mask I get all kinds of artifacting going on. I try to use quick select to clean up the artifacting to no avail, in fact I start to get different artifacting in the selection that cannot be removed by the brush tool. HELP. To bad I uninstalled Photoshop CC. Can I reinstall Photoshop CC somehow? Anybody out there with the same problems? The focus area will not work also?
At this moment, I have tried : Reset the "Adobe Photoshop Settings File" (When you open Photoshop, push "option + command + shift" for Apple).
Not ok.

Change the background with a bunch of kids? Quirky quick selection tool?
Main Objective: How can I change the background behind a bunch of kids? My quick selection tool is quirky! Like the HS kids in the pic….
The 2nd photo is what I am looking to do.
When I try the quick selection tool, it's all wonky & quirky now. I can't select little bits any more! It just basically takes the whole stinkin' page! What did I do?! Are there defaults?
On watched video number 85 today, I tried to use my stylus and the bamboo pad. (Good grief; that's another story...it moves & I'm not even touching the pad; what's up with that?! Way too confusing, so I gave up!)
Anyway..this is what I need.
What is easier for me to remove the background? The kids? Pretend I didn't say yes to help with this project?
All the video tutorials on how to remove backgrounds is always on a perfect object...not a real life mess of a class. So... HELP!!!
Please.
This is WAY over my head; but I'm trying. Really.
On a mac with CC membership. You may find it easier to select the kids than the background. Instead of copying to new layer, create a mask, then you can add or remove as you like.
In the top tool bar click the icon in the middle to add to selection. Then use your option key to remove.
When you are nearing done, you can then refine the mask. If necessary you can use the other selection tool for straight lines, large areas etc. For tight places you may prefer to use the quick mask tool (lowercase q)
Take your time, you will get it. And like I said, using a mask will let you take a breather. It can help walking away for a bit. -
Quick selection tool in elements 13 doesn't snap to the nearest border area of the photo. Works more like a lasso. Also the add layer button when clicked on only brings up a black layer, not a black mask with a hole where I just cut.
Which OS are you working on?
Please try resetting your tools from Photo Bin flyout menu.
1. Open Photo bin.
2. Click on Fly Out menu
3. Click on option Reset all Tools
4. Relaunch Editor13
and see if it helps.
Thanks,

Perspective Selection Tool not working
I can't figure out why the selection tool won't work. When active, I can't grab an object to move it and the icon next to the selection arrow is a line with an arrow pointing to the left, like this
<–|
Any suggestions? That is normal and the correct icon, showing you are on the left plane. Is your item locked or on a locked layer, or in a mask? Watch the appearance paeltte to tell you what type of selection you have.
Try drawing a new rectangle as a test to see what is working and what is not.
With the Perspective Selection tool, the active planes in the perspective grid are indicated by the following pointers.
Left Grid Plane
Right Grid Plane
Horizontal Grid Plane
The keyboard shortcuts 1, 2, 3 switch you between planes

Is it too much to ask MS for a simple ad-hoc query tool for end users?
Hello This is a general MS BI topic and not specific to Power Query, but I couldn't find a more suitable general forum for it. This posting is the result of the frustration I have with MS BI stack, whereby a simple ad-hoc drag and drop query tool to
