Semi-sleeping

I apologize in advance if this is the wrong forum or a repeated question.
I've had my MacBook for two years now, and, with increasing frequency, it does not fully go to sleep when I close the lid. Sometimes--rarely, these days--I close the lid, the display goes off, and the humming procedes to stop until the computer is completely silent to my ear.
Recently, however, I close the lid, the display goes off, but the computer continues to hum. When I don't notice this, I come back two hours later to find it still warm, as if it has been on the entire time. I open the lid, and absolutely nothing happens. No display lights up, but I can hear the humming. I have tried all the keys, including the power key, have done that hotkey that turns the display on and off, everything that I could think of. It never works, so each time I have to hold down the power key, turn it off, and turn it back on again.
This wouldn't be so bad if I weren't worried about how much energy it uses while semi-sleeping, losing anything that I forgot to save, or taking up so much time. But I am...
I have recently had to go to the menu and press Sleep before closing the lid. Yes, it's not that much work, but I wish I could just shut the lid like I used to (and even this doesn't work every time). Is this a Preferences/Settings issue, or a mechanical issue where the computer no longer fully registers that I closed the lid? Do I need to go to the Apple Store?
Sorry for the length; my teachers always remind me of my issues with conciseness.
Thank you!

  • Every thing except the processor goes to sleep

When I put my Power Mac G5 to sleep, everything turns off except the fans still run and the display lamp doesn't do the breathing thing. I've removed everything except keyboard and mouse. I've turned off all automatic software instances I could find. Turned off and unplugged the system. I even did a clean install of the OS.
Is it time to look into service or am I missing something?
    Please help.
Thanks, this forum has been very helpful in the past.

A more up to date synopsis:
My Dual G5 (it has an SMU reset button). Won't go to sleep. It puts peripheral IEEE 1394 drives to sleep and powers down any peripheral DVD RW drives. Moving the mouse wakes the system, as well as the usual methods.
This occurs when putting the system to sleep with the menu, or with the key command: option, command, eject.
I reset the SMU button, the PRAM and NVRAM(command, option ,P ,R until the second start-up chime). I used TechTool Deluxe v.3.1.1, set to "all tests", to repair any disk issues after doing a clean install w/ all associated updates OS X v.10.4.10. I ran Disk Utility to repair any permissions and to verify thier SMART status. Everything is O.K. with those tests.
I powered down and then unplugged the power cord for a few minutes. I ran the system with, and with out, any peripherals. I used the keyboard alone and the mouse alone to put the system to sleep. I let the system stay in this semi-sleep mode for a few hours. Restarted it a few times. No change.
Anybody got any ideas? It seems as though there's a hardware repair in my immediate future.

  • A dilly of a pickle

    Hey all,
I just got a new MacBook and have been playing with it for a few weeks now. I discovered recently (by spending an hour on the hone with Apple Tech Support that my optical drive is bad, so I need to send it back to them (this becomes relevant in a few minutes). Yesterday (after not touching it since my Tech Support adventure), I could not get it to start up. I get the chime, the silvery grey screen, then... nothin'. It just hangs there. After some troubleshooting, I find that I can boot into safe mode (takes a very long time and for some reason only works if I shut the lid after a few minutes of holding the shift key--thus forcing it into a semi-sleep-- then reopening the lid). So tht sounds like an extension conflict, right?
Now the Tech Support guy had me do all sorts of things to troubleshoot the drive the other day, but I can't think of anything that would cause a problem. (i.e. Create a new user, log in as that user, test the drive. Try a CD in the drive-- CDs work, DVDs do not. Reset to factory settings by shutting down, removing battery, Zapping PRAM, etc)
I did download and install 2 apps the same day I called TS-- Adobe Reader, and Palm Desktop. Figuring that one of those 2 (probably Palm) was the culprit, I got rid of PD last night, but that didn't help. I can still only boot in safe mode. Tonight I will try uninstalling AR too, but in the meantime I'm a little worried-- I can't do anything with the install discs since the optical drive is bad, and I'd prefer not to send it off to be repaired until I resolve this problem. I've already repaired permissions and verified the disk, as well as removing anything from my Startup items. If removing AR doesn't fix them problem, I really don't know what to do next.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Ellen
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Hi, Ellen.
Safe Boot requires more time than a normal startup, primarily because it checks your startup disk.
Since you can startup in Safe Mode, an errant Startup or Login Item maybe the cause. My "Troubleshooting Startup and Login Items" FAQ can help you pin that down if such an item is causing the problem.
Note that I agree with Allan that you should backup all of your personal documents, etc. before sending the machine in for service. This is readily done if you've implemented a comprehensive "Backup and Recovery" solution. For advice on the backup and recovery solution I employ, see my "Backup and Recovery" FAQ.
    Good luck!

  • Restart Message in Safari

My wife recently experienced some warning signs that don't look like an Apple warning. The screen went into a semi-sleep mode (dimmed dark) and the message told her to restart the computer by either holding down the restart button or by holding the power button. Ever since that, the computer starts up with the error message right from the start. Now, we can't do anything. The error message was in 4 different languages too. (Something I don't think Apple does with it's error messages). Any help would be appreciated.

Your Mac needs a bit of servicing!
Repairing permissions is an important part of regular maintenance, and should always be carried out both before and after any software installation or update.
Go to Disk Utility (this is in your Utilities Folder in your Application folder) and click on the icon of your hard disk (not the one with all the numbers).
In First Aid, click on Repair Permissions.
This only takes a minute or two.
    Background information here:

    and here:

If you were having any serious problems with your Mac you might as well complete the exercise by repairing your hard disk as well. You cannot do this from the same start-up disk. Reboot from your install disk (holding down the C key). Once it opens, select your language, and then go to Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Select your hard disk as before and click Repair.
Once that is complete reboot again from your usual start-up disk.

  • I POD not charging when I tunes recognise it

    Hello,
    Just bought a video I-POD 60 GIG.
I installed the CD, connected the device and left it charging for 24 hours. Then I created a library synchronized it and start enjoying the music.
I let the battery run just to see how long those would last.
I then plugged the i-pod again. Here what happens:
    1) Plug I pod
    2) Do not disconnect warning pops up and battery start charging
    3) I tune starts
    4) I tunes recognize I-pod and synchronies music battery still charging
    5) Synchronization end and Battery STOP CHARGING
Why batteries stop charging? Has anybody experienced something similar?
I run Win 2000 on a dell D810 laptop. I have 4 USB 2 ports if I choose not to start I-tune automatically when I connect I-pod this charges without any problem.
I uninstalled I tunes re-installed it but no success.
    Any help appreciated.
    Thank you
    Enrico

Thank you for your reply, but since when this happened the battery status icon was rd I would assume the battery is not fully charged and should start charging.
Also when the I-pod goes to sleep there is no sign of battery icon.
    Might be an I-tune bug?
It may be the battery is charged up already. When iTUnes gets done syncing the iPOd it goes back to the main menu on the iPod and there will be a baby sized icon in the top right corner with a battery and a lighting bolt on it, after awhile the iPod goes into a semi sleep state this is when the battery icon will cover the screen much like the "DO NOT DISCONNECT" Icon http://www.apple.com/support/ipod101/anatomy/3/

  • Dock Gone Missing - Not Reacting

This has now occurred for the second time in the part 5-6 weeks: The Dock suddenly cannot be accessed (normally parked at the bottom, hidden, mag ON).
No matter what you do, there's no Dock as long as Hiding is On. Once it's turned off, the Dock appears and works normally except for the fact that Magnification does not work ... not at all.
In short, no reaction to mouse positioning at the bottom with Hiding on, and no reaction to mouse position in the Dock with Mag on, no size adjust with the mouse cursor, etc.
Both failures, strangely, happened in the same set of conditions:
    a) System had been semi-sleeping (idle for a while, screen dark, light steady and not pulsing), and
    b) I'd been cleaning gunk out of the Mighty Mouse's roller ball.
Sounds strange, I know, but I checked the notes from the last failure and ..... well, there you are.
The fix is easy enough: Just log out/Restart. Dumping the plist file also works, but I hate rebuilding the Dock after doing that.

When you get the dock working correctly save a copy of the plist somewhere for safe storage. Next time it happens just drag a copy back in to replace the other. Not a fix to prevent but will help to replace.

  • ****POWER ISSUE****

    Hello,
I recently purchased a beautiful new Mac Pro and had it set up for one day. I had it running when I left for a few hours and then when I came back, it was off and my monitor did not detect a signal.
I checked all the connections, replaced the monitor (didn't work), used both monitors on a different mac (worked), reset my SMC, unplugged all the wires and held down the power button, etc. and nothing worked.
The computer would be in a semi-sleep mode every single time I held down the button to shut it off.
I must have forced the computer to shut down about 20 times by pressing and holding the power button. Then when I powered it back up it would just go back to that soft sleep mode. After about the 20th time, I pressed it and I heard all the fans roar and I knew it worked then, which it did.
    So my 2 questions:
    (1) Do you think I damaged the computer in anyway by forcing a shutdown so many times even though I think the computer was never fully on?
    (2) Why did this happen? Why was the computer not responding to anything?
Please help!!! I feel terrible that I just literally have the computer for one day and this kind of thing happens. Any words would be greatly appreciated!!
    Thank you.

I'm sorry I just don't seem to be understanding why I need to do this right now.
The system is less than 48 hours old. I shouldn't have any bad drives or any issues with it. And as far as the software you recommended, what exactly will it do?
You mentioned..."You need a backup image of your system before your hard drive had trouble."
So if I do have any issues with this drive, how will the software help?
I should probably research what the software does before asking the question(s), but I'm just very disappointed this is happening right now.
As far as the UPS, I will definitely, definitely consider it, but I don't know how the power can really be affecting anything when I think about the electronics I've ran in the past on that same circuit (1 PowerBook, 2 MacBook Pros, G5 PowerPC, several hard drives, printers, lamps and even a small refrigerator.
To my understanding a UPS is more for protecting your electronics when a power failure occurs or something of that nature. I never, ever (knock on wood) have any power failures, but I guess it's necessary since you mentioned that little power disruptions can affect things. But can a flicker of the lights (some small power disruption) really affect my Mac Pro that much that it won't come back from the sleep mode?

  • PB "goes to sleep" semi-randomly

Ok, I know my battery doesn't hold a charge very well anymore and I've replaced my powersupply with a Macally one, but this is still very odd:
    At work:
    1) Battery says charged to 99% (=15 minutes, max)
    2) Macally powersupply LED on, steady
    3) PB never goes to sleep for no reason
    At home:
1)Battery says 0% charged (or just plugged in)
2)PB goes to sleep for no apparent reason, none of the keyboard lights work (and only wakes up when I press the Power button)
3)After (but not before) such an episode, the Macally charger LED pulses on and off.
All other appliances plugged into that circuit/outlet work normally with no power surges, spikes, brown or blackouts.
Has anyone else had similar experiences? Any ideas on what may be causing this and how to stop it?
    Thanks in advance
    (12" 1.33Ghz, 768Mb RAM, OS 10.3.9)

With the later PowerBooks (the Aluminium ones) they upped the power-output of the Adapters: the one that came with my Aluminium PowerBook is rated at 65W and reported as such by System Profiler (in the 'power' section.)
Is it possible that your new adapter is a lower power rating? The models that came with earler PowerBooks (e.g. my original Titanium PowerBook G4) were only 45W. If I use this one - same connector - with my later machine, then the machine won't switch on until the battery has accumulated some charge (and won't switch on at all, if there's no battery inserted.)

  • Couldn't find root user.  Sleeping and trying again.

Last week I installed an MSO 2004 update on my G5 iMac running 10.4.11.
Then I attempted to repair permissions. The repair permissions process
halted at about half of the progress bar. I let it cook for about two
hours without success, then tried to force quit Disk Utility. I
    couldn't force quit it, so I very reluctantly turned off the Mac;
something I've rarely ever done. I waited five minutes and then turned
the Mac back on. The startup sequence progressed to the point where the
system displays the gray apple on the gray background, and the circular
progress indicator or gear begins turning. I let it turn for one hour
and then powered off the iMac, then powered it back up with the same
    results.
I powered it off again and then commenced a Safe Boot. Same results as
    before.
I powered it off again and then started it in Single User Mode. No
problem. I ran /sbin/fsck -fy. No problem.
I typed "reboot" and it rebooted. This time I start it in Verbose mode.
After the preliminary startup code, the system began repeating the same
    message lines:
    dsFindDirNodes returned -14071, count = 0 count = 2147483646
Couldn't find root user. Sleeping and trying again.
A Google search produced very few results. I don't have a backup
because I inherited this iMac from my 75 year old semi retired father
who wanted a 20-inch Intel iMac instead. I just goof around with the G5
iMac from time to time, and am considering giving it to my little niece and
nephews. It worked great for about a month. I have customized my
user account and the accounts for the little ones, so I really don't
want to wipe the hard drive and reinstall Tiger again from scratch.
I booted from the suspect internal hard drive into single user mode.
I ran /sbin/fsck -fy on the internal hard drive.
    All tests passed.
I ran fsck_hfs on the internal hard drive.
It returned a message that stated that I needed
    to add additional information.
I ran fsck_hfs with several switches enabled, but
it continued to return this message.
I performed the procedures in Apple's article 107210
"Mac OS X, Mac OS X Server: How to Replace the NetInfo
    Database (Restoring from defaults).
This did not solve the problem.
I booted this computer from my external Firewire hard drive that I use
to create nightly backups on my G4 iMac using SuperDuper!.
I ran Disk Utility Repair Disk Permissions on the
    internal hard drive.
    There were no permissions errors.
I ran Disk Utility Repair Disk.
    All tests passed.
I ran the TechTool Pro Suites --> Advanced Tests on
    the internal hard drive.
All tests passed except for "Startup File" which it
    listed as " <Not Present>".
The description of this test is:
"This test checks the Startup file. The parameters
within this file contain the information used by
the computer ROM to determine what program will
boot the computer as well as other system-specific
    aspects."
I ran the TechTool Pro Performance --> Maintenance
routine on the internal hard drive.
    It completed the maintenance successfully.
I ran DiskWarrior on the internal hard drive.
It reported no directory errors, but I replaced it
    anyway.
While booted from the external Firewire hard drive, I viewed what
appears to be the proper compliment of folders on the internal hard
drive. Of course, I didn't examine and verify every subfolder in the
hierarchy, however, examining the Applications, Library, System, and
Users folders two deep seemed to indicate that everything was there.
I booted this computer from my Tiger installation disk. I selected
Utilities --> Reset Password... (I think.). It listed only the
Administrator account (root) on the internal hard drive. It did not
list the other three accounts that I created on this hard drive, even
all three respective folders are present in the Users folder. However,
it did list all four accounts on the still attached external Firewire
    hard drive.
By every measure, this drive and its directory are sound. I am
concerned that TechTool Pro reported that the Startup File is Not
Present. Beyond the meaning that the words suggest, I'm not sure what
this really means. I checked the Micromat site and found the following:
The Startup File has been defined but not yet
    implemented by Apple.
    What does the message signify:
    dsFindDirNodes returned -14071, count = 0 count = 2147483646
Couldn't find root user. Sleeping and trying again.
Can I effect a simple repair?
    Thank you.

I think besides a reinstall, only DiskWarrior from Alsoft...
    http://www.alsoft.com/DiskWarrior/
stands a chance of fixing it.

  • Crash to sleep(?)

    Running 10.10.1 on a 27" iMac, Late 2009.
Computer will frequently appear to go to sleep without warning or subsequent message -- screen going black.  It will occasionally come back after pressing the 'power' key in the back after a time, but often will not, necessitating a forced shut down with the power key and a start up thereafter.  After this restart, it will work for a bit then resume the unpleasantries.
    Any ideas friends?

I have this same exact problem.
    Just installed Yosemite 10.10.1 (14B25) on my iMac (27-inch, Mid 2011, 16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3, AMD Radeon HD 6770M 512 MB)

  • How do I turn off Hyper-V 2012 server sleep mode?

Just installed Hyper-V 2012 server on a HP ML360 G8. Also installed Corefig 1.1.1. It seems after about 10 minutes if idle time the monitor goes black and the unit goes into sleep or hibernation.  I have used powercfg to set it to the High Performance
power scheme and set screensaver to none in Corefig.
When the monitor goes black, if I move the mouse the sconfig screen, corefig, etc windows do not show until I run the mouse over them. Even then the windows do not 'repaint' until I run the mouse over the whole window or make some kind of key stroke in each
    window.
Worried what this will do to my VMs once I start building them and would like to see the screen at all times.  This is the first 2012 box and I have never had this issue with any of the Core 2008 products.
    Thanks

    Hi,
    “I can't locate the GUI you show, it's Hyper-V 2012 Server,so i can't edit the settings.
Sems like it may be the monitor itself is going to sleep”
The other possible is you don’t have the administrator rights, or your server has got the Power Management, after you configuration the power option, the GPO refresh then
the old configuration be covered. Please refer the following article to confirm that:

  • IPad screen not going to sleep

I have the iPad 4th gen iOS 8.0.2 (not enough space to update). Recently, sometimes when it shows a notification, and the screen turns on, it never really goes back off. It basically freezes at that current time, dims the screen, and stays like that until I put it on sleep myself. It also messes up the battery, because when it' sin that frozen semi-on state, it thinks it's on sleep or off, so after being unplugged for the whole day it still shows 100%. I'm not sure what other info to give right now, but I'll try to give as much as I can. I'm trying to get a picture, so I'll try adding that later. When I press the home button or power button when it's in this frozen state, it resumes back to full brightness, as though it was on sleep. I then have to press the power button again to put it to sleep. I've had my ipad for 2 years and this never happened before. Any help would be nice, and if you need any more info I'll get it as soon as I can, plus a picture.

So that mean the screen does swithch on and off when placed in the right type of holster and this works due to magnatic and not photosensor.
Is there application available to enable the photosensor to turn on and off the screen since i had bought & using side flap case and not holster.
    Await reply on the above,
    Thanking you in advance.
    Regards,
    Ivan

  • TS3274 I purchesed a new Ipad Air on the 23rd Jan, I have been travelling so not given it much use compared wit the old one but I noticed the battery was running down even though it was in sleep mode. Lat night it was on 58% charge, this morning i had a l

I have a new Ipad Air and have noticed everytime I open the screen the charge has reduced. over night it dropped from 58% to below 10 with a low battery warning.
The screen was asleep, cellular switched off, Bluetooth on for the keyboard. all setting infact the same as my last model which performed excellently.
Anyone know why its losing its charge so quickly. it also sems very slow to recharge also, in one hr its gained a 12% charge.

Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W or 12W (5W on Mini) USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (2.5W, most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.
How to Calibrate Your Mac, iPhone, or iPad Battery
    http://www.macblend.com/how-to-calibrate-your-mac-iphone-or-ipad-battery/
At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery (25 watt-hours) will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night. Did you already try to reset the phone by holding the sleep and home button for about 10sec, until the Apple logo comes back again? You will not lose data by resetting, but it can cure some glitches after installing new software or apps.
If this does not work, set it up as new device, explained here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4137
If still no luck, get it serviced by Apple or visit an Authorized Apple Service Provider next to your place and let them have a look at your device.

  • Leave the computer on sleep or turn it off-which is better?

Friend of mine has an intel iMac, I have an iMac PPC-G5. He told me that it's better to ALWAYS leave the computer on. Instead of doing a complete shutdown, one should log out and select sleep. The computer will last longer. Anyone got any thoughts or inside information where I can find out if this is good advice or not? Thank you. Standing by.

I guess I completely disagree with leaving a computer on 24/7 unless it's used as a server as part of a network. I just can't see the sense in leaving a computer turned on when not in use for several hours. I don't leave the TV on, the radio on, or the car running when I'm not using them. If I don't plan to use my computer for several hours (six or more), I shut it down. Doesn't matter how much energy it uses.
During my career at a large semi-conductor company, we all shut our computers off at the end of the day. They lasted for years. The idea of it being hard on the hard drive and electronics to shut it down and then back on is a myth in my estimation. As a matter of fact, it think it does the electrolitic capacitors good to exercise.
My method is to set the "energy saver" to shut the display off when not in use over ten minutes, and shut the computer down at the end of the day. I run scripts manually once per week and repair permissions on the same schedule.
Just an opinion;no proof one way or another...virg
