Sequence settings not maintained between FCP & Motion

My sequence settings in FCP are the same as in Motion however when I bring in a Motion file that I’ve created or a template it seems to revert back to square pixels. I found the “Correct for aspect ratio” in the view menu, which made the Motion file appear more like the FCP, but when I save the file and a template they still come into FCP in the wrong aspect ratio. In pref. settings for both projects (FCP & Motion) the Pixel Aspect Ratio is HD (960x720), not square. My project size is 1280 x 720. Can anyone help me understand how to get the Motion Project to play nice with FCP. When I stretch and adjust the Motion file to fit the FCP aspect ratio the render looks crappie.
Using FCP Studio 2

Thank you, Thank you!!! Now I understand what you were talking about in the 16 x 9 post answer that you gave.
From the 16 x 9 post:
"This is what happens in FCP as well. The only thing i find is that when I drop the project back into FCP it defaults to having an Distort value of 33. I have to click on it and change it back to 0 to make it display properly."
In that post you didn't mention "Aspect Ratio" parameter in the motion tab. I remember something else I had to adjust like that. Again, thank you. Now to see if the render is still crappie.
No the render of the font on the Motion file is still crappie. Aside from changing the font, does anyone have any suggestions?

  • Roundtrip between FCP & Motion not working

Hi, I have just upgraded to Final Cut Studio 2 with Motion 3. Wanted to try the roundtrip integration between FCP & Motion. When I send to motion, my clips are not recognized in motion, I have to physically reconnect the media in the media tab. I thought it is suppose to be automatic.
Do anyone encounter the same problem as me?

let's go back to the purpose:
I have written a mobile app on which people can during a sports match capture the time of the important moments by pressing buttons.
I then convert the time information into an XML or CSV file that can be read by the different NLE. Given that Sony Vegas allows to import
markers independently from a sequence. Now I look at the same things for Premiere. This allows to edit the highlights very quickly vs watching
    the entire match coverage again.
I try to replicate that on Premiere through the FCP XML, but now that the roundtrip works, the issue is that FCP XML in its structure wants a sequence.
I could imagine to provide a dummy sequence that can be overlayed by the real content just to preserve the markers. Any ideas?

  • When downloading music, the track sequence is not maintained in my itunes library.  How to arrange tracks to match original album?

When downloading music from itunes, the track sequence is not maintained in my music library as in the original album sequence.  How to rearrange my itunes library track sequence to match that of the original album?  Thanks.

    Are the tracks numbered correctly?
Have you clicked the top of the album column where it says "album" so it is sorted by album?  If you have it sorting by name then it will sort by name.
If you are sorting manually by clicking the top of the leftmost column, you need to drag the tracks in order.

  • Sequence settings not compatible with compression settings?

My sequence preset setting in FCP is HDV 1440x1080. When I drop footage shot with an HDV camera into the timeline, that is the setting that it wants to match clips to. However, when I export using Compressor, and then import the compressed files into DVD Studio Pro, the final result does not fit the SD frame, and my DVDs get cut off around the edges on some televisions. How can I compress so that it will fit SD? If I change the sequence settings in FCP to 1280X1080 it seems to fit fine after compression, but then all my clips have to be rendered, which takes hours. Is there a standard setting for SD after compression? thanks

Not sure if I understood you correctly but if you want a project shot in HDV on a SD DVD here is what you do:
Export your sequence via quicktime into a clip in HDV (export same as sequence settings)
import this HD clip into FCP
create a new sequence in DV (4:3 or 16:9, whatever you need)
drop the HD clip into the timeline
raise the master level in the mixer by 6db (otherwise your sound on the DVD will be low)
    export the SD clip
use the compressor to convert the exported SD clip into DVD files
Theoretically you can also do all of this directly with compressor from the original HDV timeline - except it takes forever and I never could get it to work properly

  • Copied sequences do not maintain integrity

Working on a long-format doc. I created about 6 source sequences for the client that we are now pulling from to create the story. When I copy and paste sections from these sequences to the new sequence using the command C/Command V function the sequences come in with black flash frames, changed aspect ratio, and lost audio adjustments. This is going to cost me potentially days of work.
We do have a lot of different formats. The Compressor column in the browser is showing: XDCAM EX 720 24p, AppleProRes 422, 7D, and DVCPRO HD 1080i60. With each of the original sequences I set it for whatever fcp suggested as the native format. With the group sequence I set the sequence settings for 1280 x 720 Aspect Ratio HDTV 720p 16:9, PAR - square. Quicktime Video Settings Compressor - XDCAM EX 720p 35 MB/s VBR.
Is there a faster way of combining these elements without losing so much of the editing adjustments? I am coming from AVID and the problem is handled differently. In my experience formats are working well together there and then need transcoding at the end.
    Thank you.

That will happen when you mix FRAME RATES. Copying from a 23.98 sequence into a 29.97 sequence, or visa versa. Mixing frame rates is BAD...doesn't go well in FCP. You need to convert everything to a uniform frame rate....should have happened before you started editing.
But why do that, right? It would have taken SO MUCH TIME to do that. Well...now that you have to fix this mess, how much time will it take?

  • Sequence settings not matching

Have just imported footage from my new panasonic GH2, into FCP. Footage shot 720 60 p is appearing as an exagerated 16.9 image.[ stretched out and not fitting the window. Project has footage from panasonic HVX 200 720 24p appearing normally.
How do i set the sequence setting to render an image that fits correctly in my sequence.  Want  to actually mix these 2 different frame rates within the same seq., Hope this is possible?
Also am importing directly from the camera, when I put no name folder in it's own folder on my hardrive, was unable to access it. Called the shop where I bought camera and they said one imports directly off the camera.
There is nothing online that I can find to explain what to do.
    catherine

When I was researching this before I got the camera, I was told that FCP would down res1080p p to 720 on inmport. See below
Then shoot 24fps 1080p on your DSLR. You can easily drop that onto a 720p 24 fps timeline as the framerates will match, and FCP will automatically resize the 1080 frame to the 720 format. By editing a larger frames size source on to a smaller framesize timeline, you will also gain the ability to reframe and recrop your source footage on the timeline without degrading the image.
    Try it.
    MtD
The long and short of this is...can I mix 720 and 1080 p footage from different cameras into the same timeline. Currently my settings are for 720  24p and am trying also to import via upres preference setting in log and transfer, 1080p footage.
Also when I log and transfer in the 1080  footage, the "in out "points are not highlighted and the footage comes in sqooshed.
    Need to figure this out??

  • FCP: Motion Distort Aspect Ratio -33.33?

    Good morning,
I recently exported two different sequences from FCP. Both films were exported using ‘QuickTime Movie’ and ‘Current Settings’.
One of the films came out letter-boxed and the other did not.
In investigating this I found the only difference in the settings of two films seems to be that under the 'Distort' field in 'Motion' tab of the FCP Viewer, the Aspect Ratio for the letter-boxed video was set at '-33.33' while for the full-screen the Aspect Ratio was set for '0'. When I changed the -33.33 to 0 I got the full-screen, non-letter-boxed image I wanted.
Both films are also played with QuickTime player using ‘Conform Aperture to: Clean’ under the ‘Presentation’ tab of [Command]-J.
Why was the Aspect Ratio for these clips set at -33.33? Since I didn't set this, it must have been an automatic setting.
I'm sure I'm missing something here.
    Cheers,
    BurntMonkey

    Studio X,
Thanks again. 'Squeeze Mode' is the DVX100B's solution to fitting a 16:9 aspect on a 4:3 chip. If I understand correctly when in the mode the DVX basically animorphically squeezes the footage onto the chip. Then when it is handled in post the footage is 'stretched' and you are left with a 16:9 aspect ratio.
Yes, when I first drag a clip to the timeline, I do get the message about the sequence settings not matching and do I want to change them to match the current clip. Is this when the Aspect Ratio is set to -33.33?
My question is still 'Why?' When I reset the aspect ration back to '0' I get the full-screen, 16:9 image that I was hoping for in the first place. But I'm wondering when this will come back to haunt me. I have burned a DVD using the exported sequence so everything seems to be OK.
Thanks for your help in understanding this.
    Cheers,
    John

  • Geometry not translating into FCP

Hi, all. Just curious if anyone has figured out an FCP-->Color-->FCP round trip workaround scenario that includes Geometry room parameters. I'm striking out.
The media was shot on 16:9 720P/24, and I'm cutting it in (amazingly, in real time--nice work, Apple) with a ProRes HQ 4:3 NTSC sequence. After a round trip, everything else looks great: primary/seconday color settings, pulldown insertion, etc. However, I've done a number of repos and small camera moves in Color, and they disappear back in FCP. Experimenting with the first :30, I've got to say the autofeathering keyframes LOOK GREAT in Color, (very natural, quick and easy to set up, and smooth) but they do not come back in after rendering, no matter what I try.
It says in the manual and on the FCPS 2 site that Geometry room settings get translated into FCP motion parameters. That's not happening. Is this a known bug? FCP's motion control is so clunky, I'd be more likely to do it in After Effects, but that's a pain, since the controls are right here in front of me in Color.
    Many thanks.

I realize this is an old thread, but here's the solution:
Just delete the .xml file from your project's container. You'll have to right-click on the project, choose "Show Package Contents", then delete the .xml file that's in there. Actually, maybe move it some place safe, even though it is a clone of the file you actually did use.
Once it's gone, Color is fooled into thinking that you didn't import this form XML, and you're good to go.
You might also have to delete the line in the project's .PDL file that has the <IMPORTFROMFCP> tag, I'm not sure. It was the first thing I tried and it didn't have any effect, but since I never put it back I can't be sure you don't need to do both things.
And I respectfully disagree about doing it there way or the highway. Since FinalTouch 1.x I've been doing all sorts of XML hacks and workarounds to make it do some things MY WAY I still can't get it to 4K with this DALSA footage I'm on right now, though

  • My 2008 Mac Pro running Lion will not play HDV1080i60 footage in FCP 7. When I open the sequence settings, all HDV codecs are hdv1, hdv2, hdv3, and so forth. Anyone have any idea how to fix this?

My 2006 - 2008 Mac Pro running Lion will not play HDV 1080i60 footage in FCP 7. When I open the sequence settings, all HDV codecs are hdv1, hdv2, hdv3, and so forth. However, when I open the project on my other Mac Pro running Snow Leopard and FCP 6, the footage works fine as it does on my newer Imac running Mavericks and FCP 7. I have tried a Quicktime update on the Mac Pro that the footage doesn't work on but it says that I already have the newest version of Quicktime installed. I have also tried reinstalling the Final Cut Pro Studio twice, still no fix. I'm completely out of solutions and need to be able to edit HDV footage on this machine. Any help would be great. Thanks.

there was a recent software update that seemed to screw HDV up.  Do some searching here over the last month or 2 and you'll find a bunch of posts and some possible solutions.
Worst case scenario, do as Shane suggests.  But might I suggest you take a look at the user tips section of the forum.  there are some great tips on how to prevent these sorts of problems by cloning your startup drive, etc.

  • Downconverting HD to SD:  Change Sequence Settings or. Motion Tab ???

I'm working with 1080i DVCPro HD footage, which am editing in HD. The client wants me to deliver the project file with HD and SD sequences (with identical cuts) but SD Quicktime renders.
So the HD sequences are easy ... under Sequence Settings I have these specs, which allow me to edit the footage without having to render:
Frame Size 1280x 1080, Aspect Ratio HD (1280x1080)(16x9)
Pixel Aspect Ratio: HD (1280x1080) - Ananmorphic NOT checked
    Field Dominance: Upper (odd)
    Editing Timebase: 29.97
    Compressor: DVCPro HD 1080i60
SO ... the best way to downconvert to SD ... I'm figuring copying the HD sequences after the edits are done, and then changing Sequence Settings to these specs:
Frame Size: 720x480 NTSC DV (3:2)
Pixel Aspect Ratio: NTSC - CCIR 601 DV (720x480) - Anamorphic NOT checked
    Field Dominance: Lower (even)
    Editing Timebase: 29.97
    Compressor: DV/DVCPro NTSC
I'm not delivering Anamorphic; the SD renders will have letterboxing. BUT unless I tweek the footage's Motion settings, it still looks distorted. The footage looks the most normal after shrinking the Scale to 60% of original, and changing the Aspect Ratio to -60.
But I'm just eye-balling things ... is there a precise rule for downconverting this HD format to standard SD ?

Umm well OK I found the Advanced Format Conversion option in Compressor, and am testing that out now.
But for academics, let's just say I want to convert the sequences also ... as in, exporting normal SD Quicktimes directly from FCP's sequence without using compressor ... which Sequence Settings and Motion Settings would I change?

  • Basic FCP Sequence Settings question for 1080 footage w/ 7D

OK. So maybe it's the fact I've been working for 18 hours straight and my mind is partially play-dough, but I'm thoroughly confused right now by what I think may be the dumbest question ever.
Anyway... here's my problem and my workflow.
    PROBLEM:
Stupid black box above and below my 1080 footage after I export to QT out of FCP (this box never existed in my 720 footage)
    WORKFLOW:
    - I have 1080/30p footage from a Canon 7D and Rebel T2i
    - Converted to Prores 422 in MPEG Streamclip (I can never keep the file system intact to use the FCP EOS plugin. I need to work on that)
    - Imported into FCP7
    1080 SEQUENCE SETTINGS:
    Frame size: 1920x1080 HDTV 1080 (16:9)
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: Square
    Field Dominance: None
    Editing Timebase: 29.97
    Compressor: HDV1080p30 (Also tried ProRes)
    Quality: 100 percent
After I export to Quicktime with current settings, the video plays back with a small black bar above and below the footage. Weird. This seems kind of normal to me, except these bars never existed when I edited in 720. Not that it looks bad, I'm just confused why the bars are there when they weren't there in 720.
    720 SEQUENCE SETTINGS:
    Frame size: 1280x720 HDTV 720p (16:9)
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: Square
    Field Dominance: None
    Editing Timebase: 29.97
    Compressor: HDV 720p30
    Quality: 100 percent
When I export this, no black bars above and below.
So why -- If my settings are basically the same except for the 1080/720 substitution -- do I get the above/below black boxes for 1080 and I don't get them for 720?
I don't think I want the box. Don't like the box. The box is bad. I think.
    Thanks.

I'll send my thanks over here, too, Shane. Posting on multiple sites because project is due today.
Hopefully this will be a lesson learned and my sequence settings are point-on from here on out.
If anyone else is reading this and has a similar problem, though, Shane came up with the solution:
"Highlight all the footage you pasted...then right-click and choose REMOVE ATTRIBUTES. Then check BASIC MOTION." After checking basic motion, you also have to check distort.
And if the quicktime inspector doesn't read out 1920x1080, don't worry about it and just trust FCP.
    Thanks for the input, all.

  • FCP 6 Sequence Settings and RT playback problem

    Hi everyone
Have recently bought a copy of Final Cut Pro Studio for my macbook pro
I know to play video in FCP in real time all the sequence settings need to match the captured video/file settings of the clip.
All my settings are matching, Ive tripple checked them but they are STILL saying I need to render the clip before playback in SafeRT.
Have tried deleating files and re-importing them ect still no go.
The file ive imported is a DVCPRO HD codec.
I cant render everytime I want to play a video - thats not an option. It should be okay if all the settings match (Which I belive they do) but still not working.... is there a vital setting I may have missed?
Im running FCP 6 on a
    Mackbook pro 17"
    5400 rpm sata drive
NIVIDIA 8600 geforce 256MB graphics card
    160GB hard drive
    2.0 MB Memory
    this prob is SO WEIRD
    cheers
    h

Yeah tried doing that, plays okay but really want to get the safeRT working properly
wow - i didnt realize that the 5400rpm drive in the macbook pro would preform so poorley with compressed codecs such as DVCPRO which is a pretyt standard codec yes?
I guess the 7200rpm drive now is def the way to go - i was getting one anyway
so does it matter that the computer drive speed is 5400rpm when working of a 7200 rpm firewire 800port drive? I assume that if all the media is on the 7200rpm the computer internal drive would only be running the program, which would be more then enough do you agree?
Its looks as if FCP 6 has some way of recognising the computer drive speed for accessing the media and determining whether it is fast enough or not, if not, wont even try to attempt to play in RT resulting in the red render line, no matter if I have my sequences settings all set up correctly and matching. This is something that I am unclear about in the software.

  • FCP 7 crashes when choosing "yes" to changing of sequence settings for Flip

I've been doing quite a bit of work with the Flip HD video camera recently. I grew tired of rendering everything, so decided it was time to finally upgrade from FCP 5 to FCP 7.
However, FCP 7 crashes every time I try to lay down video files from the Flip camera onto a timeline.
Upon laying the files down onto the timeline, I am prompted with the message asking if I want to change the sequence settings to match the video. I click yes and immediately get "General Error" and FCP crashes.
I tried trashing the preferences. same result.
I tried updating FCP 7 to FCP 7.0.1. same result.
I even tried updating fixes for iMovie as if that would have anything to do with it. same result.
I'm currently rendering it out the same way I had been in FCP 5.
    Any advice or ideas?

AVC is h.264, which is not a work-able editing format, it's a delivery format (and a consumer video camera acquisition format suitable for holiday videos going straight to YouTube), that's why you've been having to render all the time in FCP 5.
Now you're in FCP 7 and it's asking if you want to change the sequence settings to match the video, but there is no sequence setting to match AVC/h.264 so it's freaking your computer out. Still, it shouldn't crash, but that's the problem i believe.
You need to correct your work-flow by transcoding your media into something usable like ProRes, or you can choose not to change your sequence settings, and render the timeline as you have been doing in the past.

  • Sequence Settings FCP to Color and back again

Sorry in advance if i missed the answer to this when previously searching the forum.
Ok, I have a sequence in FCP. I duplicate it removing any problematic effects and place it all on one time line. I send the sequence to Color. In the settings I notice that the quick time settings are a different ratio to my fcp settings. I change them to 1440 x 1080 (same as FCP). When I send the rendered graded sequence back to FCP the sequence changes to a different frame size?
I can go into sequence settings in FCP and change them but is there a way of keeping the same aspect ratio / pixel ratio and dimensions between the 2 applications.
It feels like I have missed a step when setting the applications up but I can't find where.
Any help will be much appreciated

    morphretouch,
Since you are working w/an interlaced format you should be aware of a couple of bugs in Color that will cause the program to mess up your field order. The first bug is using certain nodes in the Color FX room and the second bug is caused by resizing/reframing in the Geometry room (this includes resizes that are done in FCP as that information is carried over into Color). Even if you resize something in Color and then hit the "reset" button the bug will still happen because Color still thinks you resized the image (the border of the frame in the Geometry room will be red instead of white).
More details about the Color FX bug can be found here:
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/using_color_fxnode.html
A work around for the Geometry room bug can be found here:
    http://forums.creativecow.net/thread/223/7110
The work around is in a post by Saul Budd, about half down the page, and starts with the line "I've just had a "D'oh!" moment ..."

  • Sequence Settings - LiveType & FCP for widescreen

I am creating a project using text clips created in Live Type to be played on widescreen monitors (I assume they are HD but am not positive). Clips are only white moving type on black background. no images.
What would be the best setting to use for project in Live Type? I know I have to use the same sequence setting in FCP. I have tried a few different things and don't seem to get it right. (having to render in fcp when I edit clip) I did watch the video on "Editing non-standard FCP codecs. But I want to start with my LT clips being optimized for the final output.
    Thanks.

There are presets for livetpe and for fcp that are 16:9.... some are HD, some are not... but in any event you should be using the same in each program. Also you'll have to render any livetype animated title in FCP... even if the sequence settings match. OR you can export a QT movie of the livetype animation and import it into FCP for the edit, then the "render" will have been done via the export of the QT movie. The best would be uncompressed HD, however this would take some very serious hard drive speeds (think fibre channel array) to play the files back with.
