Sequences crash fcp

so we're transitioning from fcp 5.0.4. on a g5, 10.3.9 to fcp 6.0.4 on an intel, 10.4.11. i've got all my old fcp sequences transfered over along with all the necessary files. however, there are some projects that have troublesome sequences that crash fcp whenever i try and open them. the projects are updated and open fine. but when i try and open up certain sequences, they'll open up in the timeline and immediately crash fcp.
i tried copying all the files in the project to a new project. i deleted the old project file and resaved it under a new name. i saved and restarted fcp. still have the exact same problem. what's going on? am i never going to be able to open these sequences again? cause they're kinda important.

so your guess is that it's an operating system issue? and you don't think it could be anything else? i suppose that does make sense since the issue makes no sense at all, but just wanna confirm before thinking about spending more money.

  • Rendering Sequence with Motion 3 Template Crashes FCP

I am using a template with 8 drop zones from Motion 3 in FCP 6.0.2. The template is used about 10 times end to end with a slight overlap. As FCP renders the sequence about 23% of the way through it crashes FCP. The templates contain still images - no video.
Any thoughts? (Besides don't use templates)
    Thanks!

  • Plug in crashing FCP

OK, before I cry my huge head to sleep on my huge pillow, I wanted to see if anyone knew how to clear up this issue - I know there have been posts on this before, but I just cannot overcome this problem.
FCP 6.04, late 2007 MacPro --- I am trying to "send to soundtrack pro multitrack project" a sequence from FCP. It gets about 53 percent through the process, and then FCP quits with a message saying that it "might have been from the Pro Media Plug In". Naturally, I went looking for this plugin and I am finding that it doesn't exist in the FCP Plugs folder and is not coming up on a spotlight search. I trashed preferences (FCP Rescue 6) and tried it again - FCP keeps crashing when I go to export this sequence to STP - I really need to get this sound edited - anyone have any other clue as to what the heck to do? Thanks.

Jerry's solution seems like a reasonable workaround.
On the longer view, it may be time to do a full erase and reinstall of the whole system and apps.
It's a painful move but it will ensure you have the cleanest machine possible. Herein are X's rules for a happy experience.
    • Make a list of all Applications to install. Which ones do you need? Go through your Applications and Utilities folder and note which ones you'll want to reinstall. Note the version.
(I don't know about you, but I had a shocking number of apps I downloaded, used for a few times and never used again. Forget installing these disused apps.)
    • If you are upgrading from a PPC to an intel machine, you'll want to know if the apps are UB or PPC. Upgrading your PPC software to UB can be a significant cost in a PPC to intel conversion. Know what you are getting into - do a search before installation to see if there is a UB version available. You can find out whether an app is PPC or UB by looking in System Profiler>Software>Applications. This window will also tell you the current installed version number. Generate a .pdf file of it and have everything listed for your records.
    • In the list, note whether is was a download or you have a disk. If it was a download, find the DMG or installer package and copy it to an external firewire drive. Put it in a folder titled - Apps to be installed - or something easily identifiable.
    • If you need to go back to a previous version (e.g. QT 6.5.2) download the dmg file BEFORE you start the installation process.
    • In the list, note if the application is a full install or an UPGRADE. If an upgrade, make sure you have the previous version's disks (as well as the serial numbers - see below).
If the UPGRADE version does not require the previous version to be present - eg when installing the upgrade version of FCP 6, DO NOT install earlier software. All you'll need is the previous serial number. The way to figure this out is to try to install the newest version. If it needs the previous version present before proceeding, the install process will tell you that.
Some upgrades will require that a version of the previous app is on the disk. If this is the case, when you install the first version, simply install the minimum so the app will be on the hard drive. You will need to do this because there will be NOTHING on the disk after you do your clean erase.
    • Referencing your list, find ALL your disks before you start. This includes previous versions if you are unsure whether they will be needed.
    • Spend some time looking through this forum for Professional Application installation issues. The classic example is a conflict between Logic and FCP. Install FCP first and you'll have no issues.
    • Sort your list into an installation sequence. Lay out your disks in that order.
    • Referencing the list, make sure you have ALL your serial numbers including those you've downloaded. I've purchased a number of programs on line and the only documentation of the serial number was an email. All those are kept in a dedicated folder in Mac Mail. For serial numbers that arrived via electronic means, use cut and paste instead of re-typing whenever possible. This will prevent errors in transcription.
In making the list, TEXT EDIT works ok, (I use Excel). Text edit has the benefit of being easily readable on any mac. Print the list out for reference, put a copy on a flash drive or a firewire drive where you can access it to cut and past serial numbers during the installation process.
    • Download Carbon Copy Cloner or one of the other backup utilities and do a full backup of your existing system drive to an external firewire drive. Make the drive bootable. *Do not* cheap out on this as this is your insurance policy. If you forget something or can not find a serial number, you often can find it and copy it from the backup system to the newly installed version. Or, if things go horribly wrong, you can simply copy the old system back to your computer and pick up where you left off.
    • Recognize this is going to take some time. Ranting, drinking too much coffee, swearing, sitting in front of the computer watching the progress bar, etc will not make things go faster. All it will to is put you in a really bad frame of mind. Do it over a weekend when you can be multitasking. While you are cleaning off the mountains of paper on your desk or raking the yard, you can take regular breaks to check on progress.
    Process -
    • Once you have gathered and organized all the materials and backed up the drive ...
    • Erase the hard drive. Use the ZEROs option as this will map out any bad sectors. This will take time. See the note above.
    • Install the OS. If it is an upgrade install, see the note above regarding upgrade installs. Repair Permissions and then run the updates. Repair Permissions.
    • Install your applications following your list. Make sure to Repair Permissions after each install and update..
Have fun, be prepared for a few minor glitches. If you multitask, you can get the garage/ or office cleaned out and your computer rebuilt. In all honesty, this process took all weekend plus time in the next week as I discovered apps that needed additional updates, configuration settings, etc. No doubt it would have been faster if I was sitting at the console the whole time, but I was able to get the office cleaned up and organized (which also makes ME much faster). Overall it was a very slick process.
When you have a fully functioning system again, CLONE the new system and put your info, your notes and the disks in a safe place - once you've done this once, why go through the pain of organizing this stuff again ...
Now, rejoice in a much faster, problem free machine with a lot more free disk space.
    Cheers,
    x

  • HUGE JPEGs crashing FCP

Ok, I'll start off by admitting I made a nubie mistake scanning photos in at exorbitant PPIs resulting in TIFFs that were hovering around 1GB, yes that GIG, and the largest file being 1.58GB. I've since gone through, and exported them to JPEGs resulting in file sizes about 10% the originals. However, that largest file is still giving FCP problems. Most other jpegs, from 2.7MB to 65.7MB results in a green render bar under Unlimited RT on my 2.16 Core Duo MBP with 2GB of RAM. Now when I go over that, with the 3 files that are 77.3, 86.6, and 115.8MB, the images get an orange render bar and result in crashing FCP. I read in a previous thread that it was a memory issue, and that was confirmed when I went to play one of the images in the Viewer and I get Error:Out of Memory. So I jacked the memory, all of it. Application was always listed as 100%, but now I have Still Cache also set to 100% and Disk set to 10,000K and RAM at 1,000K, but this still hasn't fixed my issue. I've tried every way I know of to render this image, and they all quit FCP. Before I raised the memory, just placing the file in the timeline would cause a crash, so at least now it gets past that. If I let it auto render, crash. If I do it manually, crash. If I make a new sequence like David suggest in a previous thread, you better believe it crashes. The interesting thing is despite raising FCP's memory usage, Activity Monitor still shows 1.04GB of free RAM, so if FCP is Out of Memory, why doesn't it just use up that 1+GB? Does anyone know why FCP can't play with such large files?
I guess I'll just need to recompress the few images again, but it's VERY annoying. At least I'm not trying to work with the 1.5GB image.
    -Brian
By the way, I am on Final Cut 5.1.4.

You can reduce the cache levels and history states in Photoshop's memory preferences. This will buy back some memory. You should quit and restart Photoshop after each major image resize. This will also keep the app from building up too much cache.
I'll assume these are PSB format, rather than PSD. PSB's don't work the same as PSD's with scratch disk. You may need a separate scratch disk if you keep getting errors. Designate your fastest largest drive to do this.
You really need to get them down to around 1000x1000 pixels to be truly fast in FCP.
Don't forget that Photoshop has a new tool called Image Processor under File/Scripts/ that can size documents without really having to rasterize them. It works much faster than opening the file then running a resize. But be careful to just run 1 or 2 at a time, since I've found that it doesn't do a great job at purging the memory after each image. You will run out of memory quickly if you have too many files at once.
Remember to quit and restart Photoshop, or even you machine if it really slows to a crawl. These are signs your hard drive is full and relaunch and reboot will clear all the temp files from Photoshop's scratch disk.

  • File Crashing FCP - Can import from different tape brand be at fault?

I always use Sony Premium mini DV tapes and import my video through my Sony DSR-11 miniDV deck into FCP.
I was recently handed a Fujifilm miniDV tape. The video imported fine. But once I dragged it to the timeline, rendering any transitions or filters caused big gray boxes to appear on the video. Sound also fell. I was able to make it work - but the exported file retained the boxes at different places each time I exported.
Now the file doesn't open at all and it crashes FCP. All other files on my system still open and export fine except for this one.
My question is 1. whether the change of tape brand can cause the import to go haywire.
and 2. Is there any way I can open this file? I trashed preferences and restarted with no luck.
Any suggestions ar emuch appreciated. Thanks!
    Dual 1.8 GHz G5 Mac OS X (10.4.8) 4 GB DDR SDRAM

I've never had the same experience, so this is purely speculation.
Changing brands used in the same camcorder has been reported as the cause of recording & playback problems. But, since the playback from the DSR was okay, I'm guessing the brand isn't the problem.
Could be the camcorder settings don't match your FCP settings?
What if you copied the Fuji tape to Sony tape in your camcorder. That way you would have control of both the tape and the camcorder settings.

  • Thumbnail view crashing FCP -- Kona3 the problem?

For larger projects, running bins in thumbnail view crashes FCP.
Most of the time, I'm editing 6 to 8 min. stories for a news magazine format show. We shoot on Sony XDCAM, so usually 2 or 3 disks per project (roughly 44 mins of HD viddy per disk, with anywhere from 20 to 120 individual clips on the disk).
However, for our documentaries (either 26 mins or 56mins) we shoot between 30 to 45 disks full of content. When importing the disks into FCP7, we use a bin per disc, translating into an average of 80 clips per bin. Whenever a project is this big, I can only open 3 or so bins in thumbnail view. After that, the system crashes. Even if I only keep one bin open at a time, by that fourth bin, the system crashes.
We are using a KONA3 card configuration.
    Anyone else seen this?

    PROBLEM IDENTIFIED (NOT SOLVED):
I've had this problem with thumbnail images crashing FCP after opening bins for over a year now and when going back using footage from old projects it happens more frequently. I can open 2-4 bins before it will crash FCP completely.
    TROUBLESHOOTING IN THE PAST:
    - Dumped Prefs
    - Re-installed FCP
    - Formatted & Re-installed EVERYTHING (OSX included)
    - Increased thumbnail cache size
    - Created new projects & bins, etc.
    CONCLUSION:
None of the above troubleshooting strategies worked. Increasing the thumbnail cache size may appear to work a little but problem persists with little improvement.
    HOW I IDENTIFIED THE PROBLEM:
Only recently have I been working with other formats aside from XDCAM. I've recently incorporated more ProRes files into my most recent project of T2i footage from the Canon DSLR camera. If I open a bin and display thumbnails of the ProRes video clips everything works without a problem. Loading thumbnail bins with the raw .mp4 files also works fine. Only loading XDCAM files will cause FCP to crash. The problem has nothing to do with the Kona card. If you read the posts carefully here and elsewhere you will see the common denominator is the XDCAM encoded video files being displayed as thumbnail icons.
I am using XDCAM EX files at 1080p 30fps. To further isolate this problem as something having to do with the XDCAM files, another user posted on another thread:
*"I am having similar issues with two separate projects. The only commonality between them is XDCam.*
*To possibly isolate it I reinstalled FCP on one system, and installed latest Blackmagic driver on the the same. Both systems are up to date visa vi OS, FCP, and QT.*
*Both still crash with the same regularity as described here."*
Apple, this problem has persisted for more than two years and is a major problem. Just search the forums including this one. Any further upgrades of Final Cut Studio or OS X are worthless until this problem is fixed. A brand new body and interior won't fix a car with a broken engine. Please help!! Please solve this issue with the XDCAM footage in FCP!
If anyone has any solutions or work arounds please notify me. I need it!

  • Sequence Settings FCP to Color and back again

Sorry in advance if i missed the answer to this when previously searching the forum.
Ok, I have a sequence in FCP. I duplicate it removing any problematic effects and place it all on one time line. I send the sequence to Color. In the settings I notice that the quick time settings are a different ratio to my fcp settings. I change them to 1440 x 1080 (same as FCP). When I send the rendered graded sequence back to FCP the sequence changes to a different frame size?
I can go into sequence settings in FCP and change them but is there a way of keeping the same aspect ratio / pixel ratio and dimensions between the 2 applications.
It feels like I have missed a step when setting the applications up but I can't find where.
Any help will be much appreciated

    morphretouch,
Since you are working w/an interlaced format you should be aware of a couple of bugs in Color that will cause the program to mess up your field order. The first bug is using certain nodes in the Color FX room and the second bug is caused by resizing/reframing in the Geometry room (this includes resizes that are done in FCP as that information is carried over into Color). Even if you resize something in Color and then hit the "reset" button the bug will still happen because Color still thinks you resized the image (the border of the frame in the Geometry room will be red instead of white).
More details about the Color FX bug can be found here:
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/using_color_fxnode.html
A work around for the Geometry room bug can be found here:
    http://forums.creativecow.net/thread/223/7110
The work around is in a post by Saul Budd, about half down the page, and starts with the line "I've just had a "D'oh!" moment ..."

  • How to setup Compressor to create video from multiple sequences within FCP?

I am wondering how I can set compressor up to create videos from multiple sequences within FCP. When I click file -> export - > compressor for a sequence and go into the program, it doesn't allow me to go back into FCP. I just get a spinning beach ball. Is there no way to set it up so I can prep a bunch of fcp sequences within compressor and then click submit and walk away? I have over 100 sequences that need to be exported so it would be a little difficult to do this one at a time. Thanks.

    Batch processing
*Step one. Make sure everything in every sequence is rendered.*
*Step two. Make a folder somewhere and name it something relevant.*
*Step three. In FCP select all you sequences that you want to compress and right click (option), choose Batch Export from the contextual menu.*
*Step three point one. In the batch export window click on settings and choose the folder you made in step two for the destination. Make sure Make Self-Contained is not check and include Audio and Video.*
*Step four. Click export in the batch window.*
Once that is done you can close FCP.
    Now in Compressor
*Step five. Make a setting that will give you the output that you want (mpeg2, AC3, h.264, whatever). Make a destination for where you want to save the output.*
*Step six. Make a droplet from the settings you made in step five.*
    You can quit Compressor now.
*Step seven. Take the files that you batch exported from FCP in step three and four and drop them on the droplet you made in step six.*

  • XML Crashing FCP while importing.  Magic Bullet Looks could be the problem

    Hi All,
    Need a little help here.
I am using FCP 6.0.5 on a power mac G-5.
I am trying to open an XML which was exported out of FCP 7 as a version 4 XML.
Magic Bullet Looks is being used on the project, and I think this is were the problem is.
when importing the XML it crashes FCP when I select the Include Video/Audio Effects.
When I import the XML without this option selected it opens fine.
I have MB Looks Installed on machine, so the Plugins are there.
Just wanted to see if anyone has dealt with this issue or might have any insight to the problem.
I can post the Crash info on the specific thread if that can help.
    Thanks!

Couldn't agree more Jim - hence why I'm not using Snow Leopard yet as I had a nightmare in the early adoption of an older operating system. As for MBL, there seem to be many using it without problems so I don't think it's an issue with the product per say and it really is a very good plug-in. (That view will change to excellent once the problems go away) I just need to get to the bottom of which square peg is destined for which round hole and I'm hopeful that all will be well. I've also submitted a support question to Magic Bullet so will update if I get a solution. I like the CleanApp idea. I'll try that as well. (and I may even give Snow Leopard a go!)

  • AVCHD files crashing FCP using Perian

Hi everyone, I'm wondering if anyone can help with a rather hard to pin down issue.
AVCHD files on a SD card recorded on a Panasonic broadcast camera have started crashing FCP on random file transfers (log and transfer window), say I have 30 clips to transfer, it'll freeze then crash the system on clip 22 but the other clips will be fine.
I have had a look at the report window and it says' Perian has unexpectedly quit' (why the **** are apple using third party software to do the job) and the log is just code to me.
I first suspected the camera an AG HMC151 (150) because I have two so it was easy to just test the other one, but it does it on both.
Then I suspected the cards, it does it on all of them.
So I can only assume it's the macs, of which I have two, both have 10.6.6 and I'm running FCP 6.0.6. they are both about a year old.
Because this is a random problem it's actually rather stressful as this is my living.
If anyone has any good ideas or has experienced this please let me know, I think I have mentioned everything I know and apologise if I have left out some piece of vital info.
    Thanks

I've been having the same issue with importing AVCHCD footage from my Sony NXCAM. Through some major digging, I discovered someone else in another forum recommend the program Clip Wrap 2 (which I see someone also recommended above). I downloaded it just now and it works GREAT for creating useable clips. Highlight recommend.

  • AVCCam Crashing FCP

    Hi,
Just back from Cannes where my latest short film was picked up by a distributor...aside from that great news, back to reality:
I'm just trying to load in some footage from the new HMC151 panasonic AVCCam.
However, everytime I try log and transfer it crashes FCP saying there's a problem with Perian. I've tried different Macs, card readers, using the camera as the reader etc, but the clips won't load in.
I tried shooting in 720/25p and the clips came in fine, but that doesn't help the fact I have a card full of 720/50p clips I need to get in and edit.
Any ideas? How do I remove Perian to get that out of the equation?
    Help as always appreciated.
    Kenny.

    It has an uninstaller.
    Look in the system preferences.

  • Exporting Sequence from FCP

    Forum,
I sent part of a sequence from FCP to STP, but it's not in sequence anymore. It's broken back down into the original clips.
How can I edit in STP without losing the structure of the sequence that I spent so much time on?
    Thanks,
    Trey

I remember having to do a mixdown in each of my nests when dealing with this issue in 4.5.
You can also do an end-run around FCP's mis-management of the audio renders by manually throwing away the audio render files for the project in the finder and re-opening the project.
You might also try using the Advanced Format Conversion in Compressor, as that should ignore any pre-rendered material from your sequence.
Also, I have seen this problem when combining 44.1k audio (from a music CD) and 48k audio (from digital video) in the same 48k sequence. You might find it helps in the long run to re-export the CD audio as 48k and replace the music in your sequences.
    Hope this helps -

  • MX Revolution Crashes FCP 5.1.4

hey all i just go the new Mx Revolution Mouse since some people said it worked great with FCP, but he second i touch the scroll wheel it crashes FCP.
if any one else has an MX rev and let me know if you have the same problem and if you know of a fix.
    Thanks.
    Josh

It seems like some of the commands from this device are not compatible, I would go into system preferences and turn off some OS commands on the mouse and in expose that share the same f-keys with FC and see what happens.

  • Master Templates is crashing FCP 7, In Maverick

I just updated my iMac from Lion to Maveric. I was very disapointed that all the Master Templates HD are crashing FCP 7. Its amazing that Apple did not fix this issue with FCP7 upgrade. To get FCP X is out of the question.
    Is there a solution thanks.

Have you tried trashing your FCP  Preferences? This is a common first step when you get unexpected performance from Final Cut Studio components.
You can download Preference Manager from Digital Rebellion (free) and it will do it for you:
    http://www.digitalrebellion.com/prefman/
Your preferences will be reset to default settings the nest time you launch the applications.

  • P2 Media Crashing FCP

I have a lot of P2 media from a variety of P2 cards and have imported it without any big problems.
The contents of one of the cards however crashes FCP every time I try to import it. I can see the media fine on Panasonic's P2CMS reader however so I know it's there.
Does anyone have any idea what may be causing this, or better yet, some kind of work-around so I can get this footage into my project?
    Thanks!

It was recorded on an HVX200 and then copied to a backup drive (which has been our workflow for the whole project). It was shot out of town, so I don't have the camera or the P2 device to repair it.
I'm importing the P2 media via FCP's P2 media import window. Is there any other way? (It's worked for all the other media on this project.)
