Serious Graphics Problems with Macbook Pro 15'' Retina

Hi
even before and especially after having installed the latest updates for Mountain Lion I'm experiencing serious problems with my Macbook Pro 15'' Retina notebook. Have a look
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zt0tS8KJKuQ&feature=youtu.be
Does anyone else have this kind of problem? It's not the only problem I had with my Macbook Pro Retina and the Mountain Lion OS but as of now the most troubling one.
Best regards

  • Graphics problems with macbook pro retina mid 2012

It seems like I've started having graphics issues after installing the latest firmware upgrade. At seemingly random times, I start getting graphics garbage showing on my screen. Here is a screenshot:

I'm also getting some really bad sound quality on facebook notifications. I've been forced to disable them they sound horrible like they are clipping.
Trying to figure out if this is a problem on all Late 2013 15" macbook pros or if mine is defective? This occurs even at around 20-30% volume levels with the Facebook notification sound problems...

  • Graphic problems with Macbook Pro Late 2011 13"

I'll try to explain it as clear as possible. This started to happen a couple weeks ago:
My Macbook screen started to being white-blurred, and the image slows down while this happen. At first I thought that was happening randomly, but then -I guess- I realised that it was lid-related; when I open the lid more than 90 degrees the problem started to happen, sometimes it starts to happen even if the lid is in its 'working fine area' though , but after moving the lid up and down several times, it gets 'fixed'... until it happens again. There are times when it doesn't get fixed instantaneously, and it's really driving me crazy.
My first thought was that it might be the flex (not sure if this is the right name of it tough), I mean the cable that goes from the screen to the logic board. If so, or even in another case scenario, I have an Early 2011 Macbook Pro 13" where I can use any part, except for the logic board, if needed.
    Thanks in advance.

Well the Apple logo will always be visible through the screen when there is a fairly bright light behind the screen.
    That is totally normal.
As for the freezing and since this is your first Mac computer I would like to make you aware of one thing.
The way Mac OS X operating system works is slightly different then Windows. In Windows when you click the X in the upper right hand corner of the program you are using that program closes freeinig up the memory it was using. In the Apple OS, OS X, when you click the X in the upper left hand corner of the windows you are using all that does is close that active window. It dos not close the program. So if you have started up 2-3-4-5-6 programs to do something in them and then clicked the X all you have done is closed those windows for all those programs. The programs is still running. So you can end up with several programs using memory when they shouldn't be. You have to actually close those program by first using Command+Tab to see what programs are still open then go to the menu bar on the right side where the name of the program is displayed and click on that name and select Quit Program Name. Or once the name of the program is in the menu bar press Command+Q (Quit) to close that program.
Get in the habbit of always using that keyboard shortcut when you are done using a program.
Having multiple program open will cause the system to run slow.
The hard drive Apple is putting the newer Macbook Pros are of the slower type. Running at 5400RPMs as opposed to the faster 7200RPM models. Why I don't know as the faster drives don't cost that much more. Because of this all program run slightly slower. To open, to save files to and when used as a swap disk to expand on the physical memory in the computer. Which in turn will make the system seem sluggish and can casue some freezes.
So make sure you have closed all programs before opening another, and only have at the most 2-3 progams open at the same time.

  • Using Thinkpad Trackpoint USB Keyboard with MacBook Pro, Air, Retina (with pictures)

Using Thinkpad Trackpoint USB Keyboard with MacBook Pro, Air, Retina (with pictures)
The purpose of this discussion thread is to:
    (1) Get community thoughts around using alternative and complimentary mousing approaches with MacBooks
    (2) To share a current and searchable set of resources for those interested in leveraging a best-of-both-worlds approach for using a non-Apple Trackpoint Keyboard with an Apple MacBook.
    (3) To level-set the fact that a Thinkpad Trackpoint USB Keyboard works with MacBooks automatically and instantly out-of-the-box.
Note: I created this discussion because I found that all the other discussion threads related to using a Thinkpad Trackpoint Keyboard with MacBooks were archived and therefore I could not post my thoughts there.
I have been using MacBooks for 3+ years now.  Airs, Pros, Retinas etc.  I LOVE the built-in MacBook Apple Trackpad.  It is wonderful.  Apple has no equal as far as Trackpads go.
In addition, I have been using the Thinkpad Trackpoint USB Keyboard with my MacBooks for ~2 years, and below is why I have found BOTH the Apple Trackpad and Thinkpad Trackpoint to be great.
The Trackpoint and Trackpad both have their sweet spots.  Personally I use the built-in Apple Trackpad on my MacBooks when I'm using my MacBook for less than 1 hour, loosely speaking.  If I am going to be heads-down for more than 1 hr writing, reading, surfing, graphic designing, programming, workshop facilitating, teaching, mindmapping, presenting, demoing, etc. then I pull out my "Lenovo Thinkpad USB Keyboard with Trackpoint (55Y9003) > https://www.google.com/search?&q=lenovo+thinkpad+trackpoint+usb+keyboard
I know many will laugh at me for using a Thinkpad Trackpoint Keyboard with a MacBook...  Keeping an open mind, let's just agree that there is historical precedence for alternative mousing devices.  If I could only choose one, I would use the Apple MacBook built-in Trackpad exclusively, however with alternatives come potential benefits.  Keep in mind that Apple, Microsoft, Logitech and many other companies make millions of dollars each year providing alternative peripheral devices for computers, and mousing is no exception.  Regardless, I just want to share my positive experiences using both. :-)
Why should you care?  For *some* people the following is true and meaningful.  The Trackpoint (the little red eraser head stick thingy) in the midle of the keyboard enables useful and unique dynamics/use-cases, including:
You don't have to take your hand(s) off the keyboard to mouse
You can independantly click without accidentally moving the mouse (Yes I know some people don't have issues with this)
You don't run out of finger-gesture runway when you're moving your mouse across the screen (I know this is a gray area for some people)
For mouse-movement-heavy applications (e.g. Graphics, drawing, etc.) the Trackpoint *is at times* more exacting
Below I share some pictures (which I know *look* ridiculous to some people, but none-the-less help demystify what this looks like.  And, while ridiculous looking, it is actually quite thin and elegant once you get over the initial shock of seeing these two diverse technologies combined in this way.
Rest assured, the keyboard shown below (google "55Y9003") is VERY light, thin and fits in almost any laptop case/backpack easily so it is not a big deal to carry it, if you work on-the-go.  In addition:
It is UNCANNY how well it fits on top of the keyboard space of all MacBooks.
It fits perfectly around the corners of the MacBook Pro/Air/Retina keyboard
Note: I took one of the 5 rubber feet/pads off the bottom of my keyboard, the one in the middle
Lastly, you can actually use the built-in Apple Trackpad at the SAME TIME as the Trackpoint Keyboard.
It is quite a nice best-of-both-worlds approach for people that like the benefits of the "Why should you care?" use cases above.
Please reply and comment with your thoughts and please let's keep it positive, constructive and friendly :-)
    Pictures Below:
My two Retina MBPs, one with and one without the keyboard, so you can easily see the difference.  (As if you wouldn't)

Please reply and comment with your thoughts and please let's keep it positive, constructive and friendly :-)

Newer Bluetooth version of the ThinkPad External Trackpoint Keyboard available...
The new version is smaller, so you can use your MacBook Trackpad at the same time as your Trackpoint keyboard.
    Here is the Lenovo model/Part Number# 0B47190
Here is a picture of what it looks like:
Note: Just like the older larger USB model keyboard, there is a rubbery footpad in the middle of the bottom of the keyboard that I just peeled off.  Otherwise, it makes the "H" key press accidentally under-neath the keyboard.  Once I took that off, it fit perfectly over and around the built-in MacBook keyboard, so I can optionally put it on top of my MacBook for easy typing. :-)

    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mavericks if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
Upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion or Mavericks
To upgrade to Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8, Lion, or Mountain Lion installed. Purchase and download Mavericks (Free) from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
         OS X Mavericks- System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mavericks
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) —
                 Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
    Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table — RoaringApps.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
This, Adobe Flash Player 12.0.0.70, is the current version of Flash. It should work with Snow Leopard or later.

  • Help! Have a serious problem with macbook pro!, please see description!

so, this must have been about a month ago at the most when it started playing up. basicly, I noticed that A-it has all of a sudden become allot slower than before, B- applications are crashing regularly, this seems to be getting worse and worse, C- i had an incident once or twice where for no reason what so ever the macbook pro simply shut down and restarted for no reason, and with no error message, (though the more recent sudden shut downs give me a message on restart).
I first investigated the problem when I was playing skyrim, using bootcamp of course to run windows, as I do with many games. After owning the game for about two weeks, and it playing fine, it just crashed and bluescreened all of a sudden without warning, and from that moment on i was unable to play the game since every 5 or so mins in it would crash to desktop or just bluescreen. i thought that this was an error with steam or with the game, and so i looked for help on the steam forum. as i was going through various methods to solve the problem, it seemed that the problem was worsening, since the windows partition begun to bluescreen more often for no reason, and then i noticed that the mac os partition was unexpectedly shutting down for no reason more often aswell, and so i have abandoned my attempts to fix what i thought was an error with windows, and i now believe that it is something more serious. im not so sure what i should do in order to solve this, i know my way around a computer, but im not genius at them, and so i have come to the apple forum seeking help!!
here i have attatched info that may help, and by the way, it is 64 bit windows 7 that is installed on the bootcamp partition.
the following message on the bluescreen report makes me think its something to do with the graphics drivers, and so i reinstalled all of the drivers on windows, but this did absolutely nothing unfortunately.  'dxgmms. sys error'

UPDATE: after verifying and repairing permisions using disk doctor, things seemed to be on the up, but i think this was just hopefull thinking, since it has now got A LOT worse. i can no longer log in to my mac os partition, as soon as i get to the log in page where i type my password in, after typing it in and pressing enter, it will log in for a few seconds and then before i have a chance to do anything, log me out!! this is very very odd indeed!!!

  • Graphics issues with MacBook Pro Retina

I bought my 15" MBPr in July and have been living with these issues since the beginning. Generally the issue happens when scrolling or writing in forms on web pages in Safari. Often times pieces of the web page will stick or ghost. This also sometimes happens when viewing photos on FaceBook. Anyone else having similar issues?

A number of folks have had graphics issues with the Retina display model... since you're still under warranty, take your unit to your local Apple Store or an AASP and reproduce the problem for them. They should have a 'fix' - even if it means replacing the logic board - that will be of no cost to you.
I couldn't have put up with that as long as you have...

  • Big graphic problem on MacBook Pro

First, I appologize for my english but i'm french !
So, I have a very big problem since I have upgrade to Mountain Lion on my MacBook Pro mid-2010 (Core i5 2,4Ghz / 4Go / 320Go) : when the graphics card switch from the Nvdia to the Intel3000, it turn like this :
So I need to restart. There is no problem when I start with the Intel3000.
Only append when it switch from the Nvidia to the Intel3000.
So I use gfxCardStatus to only use the Nvidia but I'm waiting for a fix from Apple with the next update of Mountain Lion.
    Great update ...

Reply to myself but can help other people : after a "clean install" of Moutain Lion, using a USB key, no more problem, even with gfxCardStatus !
And big big improvement of system reactivity.

  • Gaming-Graphics problem with MacBook White Unibody (Late 2009)

Hello there, this is going on:
When I open any game (like call of duty 4) it seems to work ok, 90-125 fps as it should be (800x600 minimum graphics), and this happens the first 5-10 minutes i'm playing, then it starts to seriously lag itself, FPS goes down to 30-40 fps with a veeery poor performance, unplayable, for like 5-10 minutes, and then it starts to work fine again. I can't exactly explain it, but I don't see the fans running faster, they stay steel, the MacBook starts to heat a little and that's all I can tell.
I though this was a Mac OS X problem with the video card, but same thing happens on Boot Camp, with Windows 7, with ANY game i'm playing. Then I tried to restart the PRAM and SMC, but I don't have any solution.
Is this a Hardware problem? Is this happening just to me or is there anybody who has this problem, too? Help! and thanks in advance.

I have had this problem for the last year with iRacing and lately F1 2010.
In good news, I seem to have solved it last week. I did some googling and saw a few posts that suggested it could be due to the GPU overheating. To test this I downloaded and installed Speedfan in windows and smcFanControl in OSX.
Both apps will enable you to monitor the temp of your CPU and GPU. I noticed generally in OSX the GPU hits a max of around 72 degrees Celsius. When I switched to windows and fired up iRacing and then F1 2010 I noticed it was all fine till the GPU hit around 90 degrees Celsius. At that point it the FPS drop kicked in and I went from 70 odd FPS in iRacing to 20 FPS.
To get around the problem, You can turn up the fan speed, which will stop the GPU from getting so hot. Unfortunately for a reason I don't understand SpeedFan will not allow you to control the speed of the fan in windows. So you need increase the speed to 5000 - 6000 RPM using smcFanControl in OSX. If you restart then fire up Windows the fan speed will stay at the higher rate you have set.
Since I started doing that my FPS drop problems seem to have disappeared.
The problem is if you then put windows to sleep, when you wake it up again the fan will go back to the default speed. So if you need shut the lid of your laptop, you have to restart to Mac OSX, then set the fan speed, the restart to windows. Painful but better than FPS drops.
If anyone has any other thoughts on any of this stuff I would love to hear it.

  • Problems with MacBook pro with no return.

I bought a new MacBook Pro 13" with Retina Display and installed iWork & iLife using the original DISC obtaied for the software. I istalled update 9.1 and 9.3 as suggested by the Apple councilar. I have several documents created with the iWork applications. I get the message "The document-title-cound't be opened". All othe software i installed from third parties work with out problems. It quite disappointing to dela with this problem evenafter two long time conversations with the Apple agents. Moreover, the transfer of files from my old MacBook Pro did not work well as well. I had been forced to erace my hard disk and reinstall the OS 10.8 and the updtes 10.8.1 and 10.8.2. The other problems with the new acBook Pro are the insbility to transfer the data complete fromthe old Mac Book Pro by which I lost all my music, Photo and Video fies. These files were created for the past 10 years and I feel that the purchase of the MacBook Pro was unnecessary burdon and loss of confidence in the Apple system and company.
No repair mechanism is available and they need only the registration of the software etc.
A sad state of affair and may be time that it will start going down following teh "Newton's" low. Everything goes up has to come down!!!!!

I'm sorry but we can only go on what you post and given that, I had to ask if you spoke English so I could respond appropriately.
You say you have OSX 10.6.7 but also say you have just bought a new MacBook Retina which indicates that is not correct.
If you used Migration Assistant, your documents, email, settings and most of your software should have transferred OK. The iWork unfortunately is not one of the software that does neatly transfer, which is Apple's fault. Usually it is best to do a completely new reinstall from the installer DVDs, and update, none of which would affect your documents.
If the Migration failed it would be useful for you to explain what exactly you did and what happened. At the moment your post is simply a complaint with no details. No details leaves us completely guessing, and given your post, makes us suspect you did not understand what you were doing.
Not a help after the event, but are you aware of Carbon Copy Cloner and SuperDuper? Both let you archive your previous installations so you can go back to them if there is a problem.

  • Problems with macbook pro mirroring!

I have a 13 in mac book pro that was made in 2009 it has mountain lion osx 10.8.2 and i can play music from itunes to my apple tv with no problem but i cannot find the mirroring anywhere on my laptop. is there something i need to download? Or is it hidden?

Your model is too old and does not support AirPlay Mirroring:
    AirPlay Mirroring
Requires a second-generation Apple TV or later. Supports the following Mac models:
    iMac (Mid 2011 or newer)
Mac mini (Mid 2011 or newer)
MacBook Air (Mid 2011 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Early 2011 or newer)
This is due to the current generation of processors having integrated graphics processors, since Mirroing bypasses the GPU completely.
