Server 4.0.3 - user aliases no longer valid e-mail addresses

Until recently I was running a server with Mavericks 10.9.5 and OS X Server 31.2. I recently upgraded it to Yosemite (10.10.2) and OS X Server 4.0.3. After the upgrade I see a significant behaviour change in the mail server.
In my original setup I had several users who had some 'aliases' (also known as 'Short Names' in Workgroup Manager) defined for them. Under Server 3.1.2 these aliases were treated as valid (alternate) e-mail address. For example, if  the user 'abcd' with primary e-mail address '[email protected]' had the aliases a1 and a2 defined then mail sent to [email protected] and [email protected] would be delivered to that user. Under server 4.0.3 this behaviour seems to have changed and it no longer treats the aliases as alternate e-mail address; mail sent to them is rejected with 'user unknown'. Alternate e-mail addresses now need to be specifically assigned via Server.app/Users or Workgroup Manager.
I am surprised (though I probably should not be) that there is such a significant change in functionality without any warning; does anyone know if this is intentional or a bug? I have worked around it by adding the alternate e-mailaddresses explicitly (luckily only a few users were affected or this could have been a huge job). Of course, the issue was not noticed until a couple of days after the upgrade so for sure some legitimate mail has been lost :-(
Thoughts or comments anyone? Should I log a bug on this?

Hi Chris,
I think I found a way to create e-mail aliases on the newest OS X Server 4.0.3. Actually, two ways. In the end it doesn't work, but maybe it gives you or people on the forum clues on how to set it up properly.
You can either go to the Mail service, double-click on your domain, add a new e-mail address for the same member multiple times, editing the e-mail address on the right side:
Or you can open the user from Users accounts and add an extra e-mail address in the Email Addresses box:
Since I know Postfix is behind the OS X Server Mail feature, I looked for Postfix configuration files. Both ways of adding aliases as shown above will add entries to the Postfix "/Library/Server/Mail/Config/postfix/virtual_users" file. The file now looks like this:
# greengaroo.biz
[email protected] pleblanc
[email protected]     pleblanc
[email protected]     pleblanc
Of course I restarted the Mail service, and I checked the date of the "virtual_users" file and the "virtual_users.db" file, both were freshly updated.
Still, it doesn't work. If I send an e-mail from my Gmail account to either alias, I get the following in the SMTP Log:
Feb 13 23:47:33 x.x.x postfix/smtpd[8219]: NOQUEUE: reject: RCPT from mail-ie0-f172.google.com[209.85.223.172]: 450 4.7.1 <[email protected]>: Recipient address rejected: Service is unavailable; from=<[email protected]> to=<[email protected]> proto=ESMTP helo=<mail-ie0-f172.google.com>
But if I send an e-mail to pleblanc AT greengaroo DOT biz, it works. I googled more and many people have similar problems since Mavericks. Maybe it's a bug?
Anyone else has an idea?
EDIT: While I was writing and formatting this post, I suddenly received the e-mails I was expecting for one of my aliases... I will do more tests to make. I don't know what else I did that would have fixed the problem, or maybe it just took some time for the configuration to be applied, I don't know.

We have an itunes account on our desktop and both my kids have it on iphone and ipod. I went in and changed out user name from an old e-mail address which is no longer accessible to my one I use now... When the kids try to sign onto the itunes store it tells them they have the wrong user name..
    Can this be fixed??

Did you change the email address or create a new Apple ID?
If the email address associated with the account was merely changed, sign out of the Apple ID on the devices and sign in using the new credentials.

With this new v.31.1.0, released: September 2, 2014 version of Thunderbird, I can no longer e-mail to a Contact List of addressees, getting the error msg: F&G Committee <"F&G Committee"> is not a valid e-mail address because it is not of the form user@host. Several other people have sent in the same support request as you, noting this happened after they upgraded to version 31.1.
The exact error message is: XXXX is not a valid e-mail address because it is not of the form user@host. You must correct it before sending the e-mail.
This happens when your mailing list description includes several words separated by spaces.
If you choose to update to the recent version, although not ideal, these workarounds should let you use your mailing lists until a proper fix is implemented:
    * While composing an email open the address book and select the list you are trying to send to, highlight all the names in the list and drag them to the To: box. This uses your existing data without modifying it.
    * Replacing the blanks " " between the words in such lists' descriptions with an underscore "_". This requires modifying your mailing list(s) description(s).

  • One of our user accounts no longer loads thru Mail

For no reason I can ascertain, the Inbox is greyed out in Mail, and only one user (myself, the main user) is black and will load mail. This account works normally. However my husband's "mail only" sub-user account is greyed out, displays the "~" and will not load mail. I have tried to create a new acount for him but it is also greyed out. I have not changed any settings and I am on a network where this formerly worked just fine. As my account just renewed, I thought perhaps my husband's account had not been updated, but we can get his mail thru the web browser.

In an email only account under your .Mac account, you tried to create another email only account or you tried deleting and recreating the email only account in Mail?
At the Mail.app menu bar, go to Mailbox > Online Status.
Is "Take the (name of this email only account) Online" available?
    If so, select it.

  • User exit to change vendor e-mail address used for PO output via e-mail...

We have two vendor e-mail addresses for a particular vendor. Ignoring output determination, it looks like I will need to control which of the two e-mail vendor addresses is used when the PO is output via e-mail.
The default is the first one e-mail address, but for PO's I would like to force the second vendor e-mail address.
There are tonnes of exits available for PO output by the looks of it so I am trying to discover which is relevant for what I am trying to achieve.

    Thanks Martin,
I guess that's the same path that I took earlier when using SPRO and looking at the Purchasing->Messages. In my case it's ZMEDRUCK, but that does not help me in regards to controlling the vendors e-mail address being used. When sending the PO as an e-mail it uses (by default) the first e-mail address of the Vendor, whereas the vendor could have multiple ones. In my test case my vendor has two addresses but it always defaults to using the first. I know that I need to modify this behaviour somehow, but how I have no idea as I can find no Exit routine.

  • Using 31.1.0 on Mac & sending to distribution list, server responds 'NW-members "neighborhhod watch" invalid e-mail address because not of form user@host.'

I upgraded to Thunderbird 31.1.0 yesterday. I have not modified the distribution list in the last few weeks. This is the first time I have used the distribution list since the upgrade. I have never received an error message from the mail server objecting to my distribution list. The distribution list has thirty three (33) addresses. The last time I sent email using the distribution list was 8/28/14. Text of 'Invalid Recipient Address' alert box is "NW-members <"neighborhhod watch"> is not a valid e-mail address because it is not of the form user@host. You must correct it before sending the e-mail."

I am glad to hear that your problem has been resolved. I noticed you chose your own answer as the solution, can you select the answer that solved the problem. This will help other users with similar problems find the solution more easily.
I also have new information about this.
It looks like it's [https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1060901 this bug]. If you have an account on Bugzilla, it would help to vote for that issue.
It seems lists with a description that includes several words have this problem. The bug report suggests replacing the blanks " " between the words in such lists' descriptions with an underscore "_".
If you don't want to change your descriptions, [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1018299#answer-623437 the other workaround provided] still works.

  • Find server calendar, e-mail address of directory domain users

I'm trying to automate an action to run on our OS X Server machine to e-mail each user his or her daily schedule. My current plan is to have each user delegate access to his or her calendar to one account, log the server into this account, and write an Automator action to which I manually add each user's calendar name and e-mail address. (Automator makes this process much easier than using Applescript or bash or whatever, as I don't have to deal with parsing the iCal files myself)
However, it would be much easier if I could just tell it to iterate through all of the users in the directory domain, log in as each of them in turn, and have each e-mail the calendar to himself or herself, or something like that. My guess is that it is not possible to script something like 'log in', or that if it were possible, the user variable 'home e-mail address' would still apply to the root user, not the user as whom it was told to log in. However, I can't figure any other way to get a list of calendars and their associated e-mail addresses.
I'll probably have to go the route of manually entering each person's info, but if anyone can think of a better idea, please let me know!
    Greg

On OS X server all the calendar users are listed in the directory, so you just have to search that looking for user with the appropriate ServicesLocator attribute value. Doing that will all you to get the record name, email address and GUID of calendar users. For each of those you then ned to do a lot of work to get their calendar data for the day. That is not trivial to do.
I suggest you right up a feature request to have an option for the server to automatically do this.

  • How can I get the e-mail address (reply addr.) once connected to a server

My application ask the user to enter the POP3 server host name (+ port) more the
POP3 server userId and password .... I can get the e-mails and show the to the user ....
Now, the user want to send a message from that "account" and what I need
is to know the "reply address" (the "from address") to set to the outgoing message ...
I would like to get it somehow (from the API or in anotherway) without asking the
    user to enter it ...
So, oonce connected to the POP3 mail server (successful login) is it
possible to get the e-mail address of that guy ??
please let me know if you have a solution ....
many thanks / regards / Max

You are of course trying to get an email address in the format of [email protected] You already have "username" the trick is the somedomain.com. I don't believe that the pop3 server has anyway to tell you this. Unless your host name is "fully qualified", i.e. pop3.somedomain.com, I don't know that you can get this information. Maybe you could take the IP address and do a reverse DNS lookup? Still you wouldn't really know if that is the domain the user really wants. For example I retrieve and send my email from aaa.com, but my domain for my reply-to is bbb.com. Your goal is noble, but perhaps not practical. That is why Outlook Express requires the user to enter their email address when setting up an account. Hope this helps.

  • Account problems - User ID and e-mail addresses

I created a user ID about eight years ago when I had a .mac account and my ID was my e-mail address, i.e. [email protected]
After a year, I decided that I no longer wanted to use .mac and didn't renew my subscription. I seem to remember that I had to continue using the .mac user ID even though it was no longer a valid e-mail address. I added my new e-mail address and all communication is sent to that.
So, I have put up with this odd situation - using an old invalid e-mail address as my user ID and logging in, making purchases with nothing more than a minor inconvenience, until now.
I installed the Messages Beta anticipating the ability to merge/sync messages with my iPhone but was frustrated that it didn't work. I discovered that the problem is related to the caller ID e-mail addresses being the same and there lay the problem - I can't use the invalid user ID on my Mac that my iPhone uses.
I have looked into my account settings and I can see that I can add and edit all my e-mail addresses but my user ID is fixed. But worse than that, I am getting a warning that my user ID and e-mail default e-mail address should be the same.
Has anybody any idea how I can sort this out? Or if there is any way to restore my .mac e-mail account?

No. The login ID is nothing more than an text string and it does not function as an actual email address. If you wish to change the email address associated with your Apple ID use this page: <http://store.apple.com/us/account/home>.
The text string you use to log in will remain the Yahoo "email address" but all email communications will be sent to the address specified in your account.

  • TS4268 iPhone users can no longer send me text messages now that i've moved to a non-iOS phone. Can iMessage service or Message users be refreshed to see me as a normal text message recipient?

iPhone users can no longer send me text messages now that i've moved to a non-iOS phone. Can iMessage service or Message users be refreshed to see me as a normal text message recipient?
I still have an iPhone, but haven't turned it on for weeks. And there's no SIM in it, so no cell service, just WiFi.  When I turn it on after a prolonged period of having it off (weeks), a bunch of messages popup that should have been forwarded to my new phone (same phone number and carrier as when I was an iPhone user) but appear to sit in iMessage queue indefinitely instead.
I'm guessing it has to do with the link that's made when an iPhone first realizes that it's talking to another iPhone and defaults, for all future texts, to iMessage.  You know, the green to blue switch.  How does that association get undone?
Has anyone else seen this, and if so, is there a fix?

your number can remain on the imessage server for some time

    Hi,
Do you mean your domain users can’t send messages to a specific domain? And users can send other external domain messages well? Also check whether you can receive external messages or not.
Please check whether this destination domain is listed in the accepted domain of your Exchange server(EMC > Organization Configuration > Hub Transport > Accepted Domains). If it is, please remove it from the list. Additionally, since the issue happens
to all domain users, I suggest we can collect any logs in your Exchange server to ask a question in Microsoft Exchange Server forum for more professional suggestions:

  • Mavericks (10.9.5) time machine and server 3.2.1 user permissions conflict

We are using a Mac mini Server (mid 2010) 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB 1067MHz DDR3, NVIDIA GeForce 320M 256MB machine. There are 2 500GB hard disks which have each been partitioned into 2 separate logical disks of 250GB each (in total 4 logical 250GB disks).
We having been using this server to file share on the local network for years using Snow Leopard, Lion and Mountain Lion (although there were teething problems with Mountain Lion using the new Server app).
After experiencing some issues with an iCloud password change and App Store failing to load, we decided to try updating to Mavericks. Upon update we were prompted to update the Server app to Mavericks version (Server app 3.2.1), this seemed to work to begin with, preserving file sharing and network user records and permissions, however we soon started to experience issues with permissions and Time Machine. We noticed that the Open Directory set up to store our network users was no longer available in the Server app and so decided to erase one of the alternate partitions and perform a clean install of Mavericks and Server app 3.2.1. This proved to produce the same issues with Time Machine permissions and also difficulties with the shared folder permissions.
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hi Linc,
    Thanks for the reply.
The Time Machine folders shown are from the Server app Storage tab which shows all connected hard drives. I haven't set TM drives up to be shared and hopefully the following screenshots will illustrate the current setup. This setup was created from a clean install of all involved software i.e. drives were erased and setup from scratch and the TM drives were simply connected and TM took control from there.
As you can see from these screenshots, when viewing the permissions through the Server app, there appears to be an extra user when compared to the OS Get Info window.
After leaving TM to its own devices over the weekend, I was greeted with a 'preparing backup' message this morning(Mon 13th October), with a last backup completed on Sat 11th October at 15:19:16. Stopping this backup and starting a manual backup has now resulted in a new, never before experienced error message stating that the backup disks can not be found:
    Console reports:
I must re-iterate, the disk was erased and simply connected and Time Machine did its thing. Now as 'admin' it is clear that the folders created by TM do not have permissions so that I can simply view them in Finder, but does this directly affect TMs ability to access folders it has created itself?
One useful bit of information I seem to have neglected is that the erased TM drive is encrypted, however the password was entered when the drive was connected to the machine and there has been no prompt thereafter.
Please help. Only other comment I can make is that before the update to Mavericks and Server app 3.2.1, none of this was a problem.

  • How to configure Mail Users aliases

    Hello,
i have installed OS X Lion Server and after after a short while i was very dissapointed.
One of my goals was to get a easy GUI to adminstrate my mail Server.
So, after installing Server App i configure and activate a Mail Server.
Then i wanted to add aliases to my User and tried to start The Workgroup Manager.
Within i searched for a the mail tab in order to configure the User Aliases.
But there was no Mail tab there, so i have to create the aliases through the command line (edit /etc/postfix/aliases, newaliases).
I cannot believe that there is no gui for configuring mail users. Is this really so or is it in another place or have i forgotten to check or to do something else.
How do you setting up and configure mail and mail users in OS X Lion?
I am looking forward to you answers and expiriences,
    Greetings,
    Peter

    @menzbua
You can configure mail aliases, the same way you did in Mac OS 10.6 Server... Make sure you have Installed Server Tools for 10.7. Run Workgroup Manager. Under the User, Select Short names on the 2nd or 3 line add [email protected] etc .etc
