Server capacity

Hello everyone.
Thanks for taking a second to read this and hopefully reply. I will start off with the usual "hi my name is matt and im an alcoh.. wait I mean im a complete zero when it comes to Servers. But I know I needed one or two because I have been paying alot
of $ to have my websites hosted and I am about to put a database online that consists of several (200+) million records, and the price they quoted to host that was not even in the ballpark of negotiation. So I went on craigslist last weekend and bought
a bunch of servers. I know most of them are moving out of the pro league and into the senior classic but I have been told that they will get the job done. Here is what I bought: 1 dell poweredge 600sc 1 dell poweredge 1800 3 dell poweredge 1850's and 1 dell
poweredge 2850. along with a storage rack a couple 48 port powerconnect switches and some other boxes with blinking lights that say dell power...something. Soooo Here is my question: I read today that these servers have disk size limits that you cant exceed.
and my newest (least old) is the 2850 which im told the 6 disks have a limit of 300GB each X 6 is... (shoes off...2 ..192...) 1.8TB correct?? I have porn collections that almost that big. I would need to purchase roughly 27 of these little 300 gb hard drives
before I could even think of transferring any data.
(I havent even hit send yet and I can hear the sighs as your eyes roll back in your head. ) I know im missing some part to this equation.
Oh if it makes any difference I bought a couple of them from a software retailer who went belly up and 2 of the servers came with 25 end user lisc... so 50 total from what I read in one of the books that came with it im supposed to give them to the people
i want to have access to the server or something similar. Then another of the 1850's has linux on it and that guy said that those lisc are worthless because its from 2003. So I dont know they are in a file folder if I need them.
One of the servers came with a crate full of books and manuals etc and I have spent 3 days.. gosh its Thursday so that makes it 4 days that I have been doing nothing but reading about dns gateways and trying to figure out why ALL the servers show they are
connected to the net until I type anything then they say they "only appeared to be connected" but cant actually reach any web pages" but if I pull the net line then they show offline so I know they are connected. I turned off all the high medium
low restrictions entered in every website I could think of as a trusted site but still cant even connect to Microsoft.com or even windows update.  So as I was trying to figure that issue out was when I came across this part about disk size limits. Which
makes me wonder if I should keep trying to get these online or set them out by the curb and pay the $1800 per month to have this database through salesforce. Then the websites on top of that but those are pennies compared to the $300 per user per month with
6 users.
I thank you very much for your time and if someone would rather send me an email its [email protected] (I only use it to log into here so I dont care if its posted)

Hi,
If you have previously initialized the disk by using the MBR partitioning scheme, then the biggest drive that will be supported is 2TB. The partitions that can be defined on a GPT disk can be up to 16EB in size.
For more detailed information, please refer to the articles below:

  • Precalculation SAP Server Capacity before deploy Roll Out Project

    Hello Experts,
Kindly any one share your great experience to help our requirement.
We are planning to implement new business scenarios and new client in existing Production server.
Before deploy new business functionalists, what are factors need to consider in existing Production server.
How to precalculate SAP server capacity to adopt new functionality, how affect workload, performance, memory..etc..
Kindly any one the list of factors.. and some standard document.
    Regards,
    Karthik

    Hi Karthik,
First find out the 'capacity' of your current server hardware. Ask the HW provider for the SAPS number of the machines, or look it up on SAP's benchmark sides http://service.sap.com/benchmarks
Then monitor the current usage of your servers to find out how many SAPS you need for the existing functions, and how much headroom you have left.
And for the new functions, look whether some sizing guideline exists (http://service.sap.com/sizing) or if a sizing for the new application is implemented in the quicksizer tool.
    With that, it should be a simple a + b = c type calculation.
    Best Regards, Randolf

  • CUPS Server capacity

I've been scouring the CUPS documents to try to find the maximum number of users supported per server. But I've failed to find a simple table that says server type X supports Y users. (I understand that there are differences between the deployment method: i.e. full CUCM integration or just IM)
There is information about capacity in both the Deployment Guide and the SRND, but I can't see the wood for the tress.

Please have a look into Docwiki if it helps
    http://docwiki.cisco.com/wiki/Virtualization_for_Unified_CM_IM_and_Presence#Notes_on_1000_user_VM_configuration
Number of “Jabber for Everyone” users = (Number of full UC users/Maximum number of full UC users) x
Maximum number of “Jabber for Everyone” users
For example, if you have 10,000 full UC users on a server that supports a maximum of 15,000 users, then
you are operating at 2/3 of the scale for UC, which means that 1/3 is available for “Jabber for Everyone” users.
The IM and Presence Service supports 25,000 users for IM-only mode, therefore, you can add 8,333 users
(25,000 x 1/3) through “Jabber for Everyone”. This amounts to a total of 18,333 users.

  • Graceful failure - maximum server capacity reached

    Hello,
We are doing Infrastructure design and planning.
We have a requirement for graceful failure in case the maximum capacity of the server is reahed.
For e.g. server is built for x number of concurrent users.
when x+1th user accesses the system, instead of system just behaving slow and not responding, we want it to redirect users to a web page or show a message saying please try after some time.
What is the best way to handle this requirement?
Can we use one of the web profile error pages for this purpose?
When the infrastructure doesn't support, is there an error generated? Or can we set it up to generate it?
    Thanks,
    Ekta

    Hi,
From the Error message its clear your application is not able to allocate a new connection from the database .
You can increase the connection pool size by navugating to
Data Source==> AgileContentPool data source ===>connection pool and check the value of
    1.initial capacity
    2.Maximum capacity.
You can increase these capaciy and check .
Consult your DBA before increasing the capacity .
    Hope it helps

  • Origin Server capacity?

I have begun to notice a large amount of the following error in my WC logs:
"Capacity, as set by Web Cache, is exceeded for all origin servers that are available for processing this request...."
What is the best approach to determine what the Capacity setting for our origin server should be?
Currently this is set at "100", which seems a bit low to me, as our server averages about 3 million WC hits per month....
Thanks in advance for any advice as to how this can be approached....

The limit for capacity will depend upon resources (e.g. CPU and memory) available in your environments. It may be a bit of trial and error to find a value that works for you. You can alter this value from the Enterprise Manager console (edit an Origin Server) or Web Cache Administrator. For more info, see the online documentation.

  • MDM Server Capacity

    Hi,
Is there any best practices saying how many repositories can be maintained on a MDM Server?
    any limit?
    Thanks,
    Pooja

    Hi Pooja,
As mentined by Ankur there is no best practices for how many repositories it can handle. But it does depends on the MDM platform that is used(HW, OS, DBMS) as well as the amount of data stored in each repository . Like SAP recommends that MDM can handle only 1 million data if the server is mounted on 32 bit windows environment but can handle more if it is on 64 bit.
It also depends upon how well sizing has been done for your MDM servers. For more details you check the following sites:
    [https://websmp205.sap-ag.de/~sapidb/011000358700006267202006E] ( Sizing guide for MDM 5.5)

I hope I am able to solve your problem.

  • Sunray Server Capacity Planning

I've searched high and low on the net to see how to spec out a server for a 50-desktop environment.
Each desktop will use the uttsc connector.. However on my 2 systems I've tried, the Load average is through the roof. (5.2 install/kiosk users)
Has anyone calculated the I/O / Resources for X user?

What kind of systems did you try ?
For serving 50 simple RDP (kiosk) desktops I would go for one a physical server with 1 quadcore with 8GB memory.
    good luck.

    Jason...
Make Certain that you Had the Server In "TS-Install" Mode When you Installed Acrobat. It Is In your Control Panel. I Have Pasted the MS Help File Below.
Install Programs on a Terminal Server
You should install the Terminal Server role service on the computer before you install any programs that you want to make available to users. If you install the Terminal Server role service on a computer that already has programs installed, some of the existing programs may not work correctly in a multiple user environment. Uninstalling and then reinstalling the affected programs may resolve these issues.
To ensure that an application is installed correctly to work in a multiple user environment, you must put the terminal server into a special installation mode before you install the application on the terminal server. This special installation mode ensures that the correct registry entries and .ini files that are needed to support running the application in a multiple user environment are created during the installation process.
You can put a terminal server into this special installation mode by using either of the following:
Install Application on Terminal Server tool under Programs in Control Panel. This tool will run a wizard to help install the application.
Change user /install command at a command prompt. You will have to start the installation of the application manually.
After the application is installed, you must put the terminal server into execution mode before remote users begin using the application. The Install Application on Terminal Server tool will automatically put the terminal server into execution mode when it is finished running. To put the terminal server into execution mode from a command prompt, use the change user /execute command.
    Additional considerations
Some programs may require minor setup modifications to run correctly on a terminal server.
If you have programs that are related to each other or have dependencies on each other, you should install the programs on the same terminal server. For example, you should install Microsoft Office as a suite on the same terminal server instead of installing individual Office programs on separate terminal servers.
You should consider installing individual programs on separate terminal servers in the following circumstances:
The program has compatibility issues that may affect other programs.
A single program and the number of associated users may fill server capacity.
For more information about the change user command-line tool, see the Terminal Services Command Reference (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=89674).
For more information about deploying programs on a terminal server, see the Terminal Server page on the Windows Server 2008 TechCenter (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=79608).

  • How to go about capacity planning for storage ?

    Hi Experts,
How to go about Capacity Planning? For  instance if clients wants to upgrade to new server and new storage and asks us how much additional storage do you need for next 5 years, how can calculate the amount of storage.
I don't have any baseline info about the server of past years. Where can I start and any scripts you guys use for doing capacity planning?

  • How to monitor load on my database server ?

    Hi Experts,
Could anybody please suggest me a way to monitor the load on my database server?
What perfmon counters should I monitor on daily basis and confirm that load on the server is increasing day by day [or] by week by week [or] every month. Also, suggest me if we can achieve this using DMV's so that we can store this info in a table using a SQL
agent job. Because a sql guy I would be more happy working with TSQL queries.
Do all this helps me, to put for forward my argument to the management that this server can handle this much of load based on data and incase if the load is increased on the server , we might need more resources ( like cpu, better storage , more RAM etc ...)
or move to a new server which has more power.
Also, please suggest any load testing tools so that I can test this on testing environment.
    Thanks in Advance.

    About Perfmon counter,
You may refer the below perfmon counter pdf file. You may need to look at all memory counters to confirm the issues.
    http://www.quest.com/backstage/images/promotions/SQLServer-Perfmonance-Poster.pdf
    Regarding
your request on workload, you need to do a Capacity planning of your servers first.
Please refer the below link, this would explain complete info:

  • Linux Server Sizing

Is there any documentation on server sizing? I have a client/server application that will have between 100 and 200 users (75-100 concurrent), and would like to go to a Linux platform. The app is currently running on a large HP server with other apps on it, but I want this to be dedicated on the Linux machine. I contacted Oracle and they were no help.
    Thanks

    Hi,
Is there any documentation on server sizing?Andy Rivenes has published a nice test script to perform a Logical I/O test rate. Because physical I/O is disk/network intensive and logical I/O (a consistent get from the data buffer cache) is CPU-intensive, this script is useful for calculating the workload capacity of Oracle servers with large buffer caches (i.e. a 64-bit Oracle server).
    http://www.appsdba.com/sql/cpu_test.sql
This script computes logical I/O per second for the given processor(s), and assuming that logical I/O is CPU-centric, this script will give a high-water-mark (HWM) for buffered I/O throughput, a critical metric for Oracle server capacity planning.
As to documentation, there are no formulas in text form that I know of, but there are capacity planning spreadsheets for sale that are used for Oracle Linux server sizing:
