Server Firewall Configuration

Hi.
I am trying to realise a custom ruleset for the Server System firewall.
I would like to know if there is a list of Protocols that are actively supported by the gui.
I have tried to introduce rules to the advanced interface in accordance with ipfw, ( or my interpretation of the gui understanding of ipfw but find that some of my rules are unacceptable.
A point of example is to set the protocol to other and introduce a rule relating to tun0, it seems the gui cannot configure this.
If possible i would like to come to an understanding with the gui.
At this point, it appears i have three options.
1. Bend my rulesets to accomodate gui ability.
2. Bypass the gui with sunsheild
3. Bypass the gui with a custom ruleset script.
written in ipfw 8.
Any comments on my understanding and what is considered to be the optimal way to go would be gratefully received.
Many thanks.
  Mac OS X (10.4.3)   Ipod; X Serve G5 Dual; G4 stuff;

In answer to myself....
Having spent a couple of days on this issue i have come to the following conclusions..
~ The firewall gui is better than i thought and allows me to do 90% of what i want to, but does take some getting used to. - especially as i am new to ipfw2
in order to understand what IPfw commands are supported you need to access man ipfw from the terminal.
This explains the syntax and helps understand the way the default firewall rules are configured.
~ I decided not to go down the Sunsheild / Other Bolt on interface, in reality they do not allow me to acheive any more, it just makes things a little easier to comprehend.
~ Writing shell scripts is not the solution (in my opinion).
Software updates could really screw things up, and that cannot happen.
i admit that i am surprised that the Mac does not fully support ipfw2 at terminal level. - but has its own syntax, to confuse the issue.
Although many Mac users seem to consider a firewall un-necessary, i can not subscribe to this.
My Conclusion.
The Mac Firewall is very good, but could be yet improved.
I still love my Xserve and it looks great.

    How Can i solve this?

    1. Make sure SQL Server Service is running
    2. If a named instance, make sure SQL Server browser service is running
    3. Make sure SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections
    4. Examine the SQL Server error log for messages confirming that SQL is listening on the expected network interfaces and ports
    5. Test server connectivity with PING from the client machine
    6. Test port connectivity using TELNET or PowerShell to the server and port (from step 4) from the client machine.  For example
    a. TELNET <server-name> 1433
    b. PowerShell: 1433 | % { echo ((new-object Net.Sockets.TcpClient).Connect("YourServerName",$_)) "server listening on TCP port $_" }
    7. Check firewall settings if step 5 or 6 connectivity test fails

  • Basic Firewall configuration

    Hello all,
I've been using Solaris 11 Express to host a server, and no matter what I do with the firewall gui utility, it won't open the ports I want to open. It clearly retains changes I made as root, but still I get connection refusals from my clients. I noticed also when I used the firewall utility, it never seemed to accept my role password for root, it just kept asking over and over again without giving me an error. I eventually made it so I could log in as root and force changes, which is how I got it to retain the changes I wanted without getting stuck in the role/credential loop. However, like I mentioned before, it's like the changes I made aren't active somehow. I've also tried disabling the firewall entirely, which seems to make no difference. Are there any good Solaris 11 Express / Firewall configuration guides out there?
    Thanks.

There were some bugs in the area of root being a role and the Visual Panels client (and its back end RAD). I highly recommend
you upgrade to Solaris 11 or even better Solaris 11.1 (which was announced at Oracle OpenWorld 2012 and will be available soon).
If you can still reproduce this behaviour there we can investigate fixing it. Solaris 11 Express is no longer a supported release.

  • Windows 2008 R2 - IPSEC Firewall Configuration

    Hi,
I want to open IPSEC between two servers with a firewall in between them.  Both servers are Windows 2008 R2.   I want to limit the IPSEC so that only data can flow from Intranet Server 1 to DMZ server1.  (I don't want to allow DMZ server
to initiate data transfer to intranet)   So, this IPSEC rule is for ONE WAY traffic.
I have asked my network team to open the following ports:
From Server1 on intranet to Server2 in DMZ:
    UDP 500
    protocol type 50
    Protocol type 51
However, the IPSEC connectivity is failing.  The server does not appear to be NEGOTIATING security.  To simply the configuration, I am currently only using a passphrase to authenticate the IPSEC.
I am wondering if I have to open the same firewall ports from the DMZ to the intranet too.  Can anyone confirm if the ports must be enabled in both directions to have IPSEC work?  and if this is the case, I guess I would have to rely on the IPSEC
policy itself to BLOCK communication from the DMZ to the Intranet.

    Hi,
Would you please tell us that how did you configure the IPsec policy?
Have you assigned the IPsec policy after you configured it?
In addition, when configuring IP filters for traffic that must be secured, make sure to mirror the filters.

  • Ftp - ftpd and firewall configuration for passive connections

I set up ftpd on my imac. Connecting and logging on work ok, but when I try to get a directory listing or xfer or send multiple commands it always locks up, i get a message "421 Service not available, remote server timed out. Connection closed" and I see that the ftpd process for that connection has terminated.
Turning the firewall completely off allows ftpd to work correctly, but I was under the impression that if I check the "FTP Access" box under services, the firewall should CORRECTLY self-configure to allow connections to ftpd. Opening ports 1024-65535 guarantees that ftpd will work with a client's passive connection, but is there a better way?
I tried opening 20 for the data connection and 21 for control, but unless I tell everyone to use an active connection, there is still a long wait before most ftp clients notice that passive isn't working and switch to an active connection, so I would like to avoid that also.

Hi, we use FTPd (with Pure FTPd Manager) on our internal server here. While I'm not a complete expert, I do know that we were able to get passive FTP working only after we got this setup properly.
The main reason we got this was for it's ability to set a default port range for passive FTP to work on. In Pure FTPd Manager, you go to Preferences/Settings and you will see the area to input your passive port range (we use 51000-51100).
Then you just need to forward those ports (on a router) to your FTP server, and/or open those ports on your server firewall.
It sounds like you already have ports 20-21 setup.
    Hope this helps!

  • Failed to update server firewall rules

    Hi
I have a problem with the SQL firewall. Unfortunately, I can not add IP address. It always comes this error when saving: Failed to update server firewall rules
How can I change this? I need to change this setting so that I can work again. Unfortunately, I do not want to help the Support of Microsoft !!

    Hi,
To configure your firewall, you create firewall rules that specify ranges of acceptable IP addresses. You can create firewall rules at the
    server and database levels.
Server-level firewall rules: These rules enable clients to access your entire Azure SQL Database server, that is, all the databases within the same logical server. These rules are stored in the
    master database.
Database-level firewall rules: These rules enable clients to access individual databases within your Azure SQL Database server. These rules are created per database and are stored in the individual databases (including
master). These rules can be helpful in restricting access to certain (secure) databases within the same logical server.

  • Locking down OS X Server firewall?

The OS X Server firewall seems to be very powerful and I want to make sure I have it configured correctly. Because I don't know what some of the services do that were enabled by default, I'm wondering if I can turn everything off in the firewall except SSH and open up other services only as needed? Or would that break the server?

    > 'm wondering if I can turn everything off in the firewall except SSH and open up other services only as needed?
That is the default. The server enables specific ports as needed, based on the services you're running. Therefore the active set of rules should be pretty tight.
You can check the current settings by running:
    <pre class=command>sudo ipfw show</pre>
If there are some allow rules there that you don't understand/expect, post them here, otherwise rest assured it isn't in Apple's interest to blindly open ports that are not necessary.

The system cannot find the file specified
I have tried from so many forms. This is so frustrating. Thank for everyone/anyone who wants to help. So this is what happened: I had to uninstall my previous sqlserver 2012(which worked great) for some reason, and I uninstalled everything from that download.
Then I installed the trial edition of sql server 2012 (64 Bit) and It wouldn't connect to the database. (Error mentioned above.) My local DB is COWBOYS. (COWBOYS is also my computer name.) After this, I have tried downloading sqlexpress and sqlserver 64bit
many times and cannot connect to my local DB.
How do I connect to my Local DB?
Also, I think this might help: (When I run sqlserve.exe, which I was able to find in C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\110\LocalDB\Binn, I get an error: Your SQL server installation is either corrupt or has been tampered with(Error getting
instance ID from name). Please uninstall then re-run setup to correct this problem.
I would happily re install it, if it wasn't my 20th time.
I don't have any remote connections, I don't use username/password, only window authentication. I work mostly on visual studio, but without able to store /retrieve data, I don't know how to survive.
May be the solution is very simple, but I am too frustrated.
Some of the things I have tried:
From a command prompt, enter one of the following commands:
net start "SQL Server Agent (MSSQLSERVER)" OR
net start "SQL Server Agent(instancename)"(for instance)
on my sql configuration, I cannot start anything because there is nothing there to start. I can post more details, if that would help. Also, some more details about the error:

Any one that can help me, I will be greatful. Thank you so much. p.s. please ask me anything if you have any questions.

It sounds like there are a couple things going on here.  First check if you have a successful install of SQL Server, then we'll figure out the connection issues.
Can you launch SQL Server Configuration Manager and check for SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER) if default instance or SQL Server (other name) if you've configured your instance as a named instance.  Once you find this, make sure the service is started.
If not started, try to start it and see if it throws an error.  If you get an error, post the error message your hitting.  If the service starts, you can then launch SSMS and try to connect.  If you have a default instance, you can use the machine
name in the connection dialog.  Ex:  "COWBOYS" where Cowboys is the machine name.  However, if you named the SQL Server instance during install, you'll need to connect using the machine\instance format.  Ex:  COWBOYS\Romo (where Romo
is the instance name you set during install).
You can also look at the summary.txt file in the SQL Server setup error logs to see what happened on the most recent install.  Past install history is archived in the log folder if you need to dig those up to help troubleshoot, but the most
recent one may help get to the bottom of it if there is an issue with setup detecting a prior instance that needs to be repaired.

    I have a 2 server SharePoint farm.
All outgoing emails were working fine.
I just restarted both servers and now after that none of the emails are being sent. I am using OOB publishing workflow and it shows message:
The e-mail message could not be sent. Make sure the outgoing e-mail settings for the server are configured correctly.
Even if I setup Alert on some list, it doesn't send email.
I have checked that outgoing email setting in CA is defined and like I said it was working fine without problems but after restart it is showing error.
What could be the cause of this and how to fix it?
    EDIT
I removed outgoing mail server in CA, added again and restart IIS but still emails from OOB workflow is not being sent. But email from Alerts are being sent. Don't know what to do now.

Adding redirect path and  pattern in Lion server for configuring software update server.Any changes

Ok, after days of browsing on the forum I found the following hint on another discussion related to AFP access:
"This may be a service ACL issue.
It turns out one of the latest Apple updates turned on Service ACL's which caused AFP connections to be  blocked. Once I fixed the Service ACL in Server Admin... all connections and Single Sign On worked."
Well, after allowing access to all services to all users with Server Admin, we were finally able to log in the server with our admin account...
So, there must have been an update that turned on ACL's which caused even our local access, probably for OD/Kerberos, on the server to be restricted.

  • Problem with SCs that created before the Name Server was configured

    Hello,
I have created an SC and developed it.
When I created it, the Name Server wasn't configured and because of that, when I created new DC for this SC I needed to write the vendor manually. Lets assume I wrote example.org.
Sometime after I did configured the Name Server and I reserved example.org as a namespace prefix.
When I create new SC and new DCs in it everything is OK: Instead of writing example.org as my vendor I can choose from a combo box between sap.com and my own which is example.org.
The problem arises with the SC that has been developed before the Name server was configured: If I create new DC for it the vendor is shaded with sap.com inside with no option to change it, even though the previous DCs for this SC were created under the vendor example.org (which I entered manually).
I assume I can (with a lot of manual work) create new SC and move the DCs (or only their code) to the newly created SC, where I have the option to choose, but I am looking for more simpler solution. For example, changing a certain configuration file at the SC or so.
    Anyone has an idea?
    Thank you in advance,

  • SCCM 2007 R3 Software Updates Sync : 6703 WSUS server not configured

    Hi,
We run SCCM 2007 R3 in native mode (Software Update Point and WSUS both reside on SCCM site server). We're having issues running Software Updates Synchronization which have previously worked fine. In SMS_WSUS_Control_Manager the errors appear as follows

    Message: WSUS server not configured.

I've followed the suggested fixes in

If I open the WSUS console directly and run a manual synchronization from Microsoft this completes successfully. However, I presume this will not be using SSL which is what SCCM will want to use in native mode. I've checked the bindings in IIS on WSUS Administration
site to confirm that the certificate hasn't expired.
Any ideas what else I can try?

Actually, I am working on Oracle Workflow 2.6.3, which need the Oracle HTTP server to configure the DAD.

It seems work fine that it showed the Welcome page of HTTP Server.
But I could'nt do anything of using the mod_plsql components nor another
Modules (mods) which showed in the welcome page
since there is no link to such things.
BTW, I have experienced with the HTTP server previously on Oracle9i
When I open the HTTP server page, it showed links to some Modules (mods)
    components such as mod_plsql, etc.
Does it need to be configured or anything else to use the links like in Oracle9i?
Or the new Oracle HTTP server does not support for this thing?
Please, can anybody help me to solve this problem.
    Thanks,
    Buntoro
