Set the clipboard wont work

Question

This code works by itself, buy when it is in a script that is a drag and drop, the clipboard never gets any data send to it. Why does it work by itself but NOT when it is in a drag and drop script.

tell application "Finder"
set y to name of item 1 of folder container_folder
set basename to text items 1 thru -5 of y
set the clipboard to basename as string
end tell

And, here's another thing.
I've missed the misuse of 'text items' in your original code.
Use 'text 1 thru -5 of y' instead of 'text items of 1 thru -5 of y'.
