Set up a power-on password
I would like to set up a power-on password - very common in Windows set in BIOS. I am aware how to set up a password to login in the Leopard OS but cannot find where to set the power-on password. Can someone give me guidance to do so. Thanks!
The best you can do is set a firmware password in conjunction with disabling auto-login.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106482
Setting a firmware password will require a password to boot the machine from any volume other than the preset boot volume. Since that volume is set to ask for a user password once it's booted, you get the same effect, without the overhead of having to enter two passwords to boot the machine normally.

I have an HP Compaq nc6200 laptop in which I have set up a power on password for. The problem is, when I try to enter my password, it does not work. I can enter my password up to 3 times then I get a little picture that looks like a circle with 3 lines sticking out the top and bottom. Is there a way I could solve this?
Thank you!

Remove the main battery and the RTC battery. and then power the notebook up with AC power. That is supposed to clear the password.

Fingerprint instead of power on password not working any more
Hi,
my current configuration is T530i model 2392.
I recently updated BIOS to version 2.52 from 12. Feb. 2013 and of course some other software especially solid state drive firmware Version FWSS28 from 14. Feb 2013.
In BIOS Predesktop Authentication is enabled in addition with harddisk password and power on password.
Now to my problem:
before updating I software I could start with only swiping my finger over fingerprint sensor, without providing any kinde of password for harddisk or power on password. I received information about success & windows 7 (64 bit) was booting.
Now I need to provide power on password all the time, seems that fingerprint or BIOS now has a bug ?!
I did several things like:
disabling every password request in BIOS rebooting...
disabling deleting fingerprints on laptop and rebooting...
unchecked all necessary settings in fingerprint security software like SSO, power-on-password, fingerprint sensor should replace power on / hard disk password..... reboooting...
- then enabled everything again which I unchecked before.... rebooting....
Nothing has worked so far, so there it seems to be a bug in predesktop authentication...
Could you please advice or provide a fix ?
Rgds
Oliver
Solved!
Go to Solution.Hi,
here short terms how I fixed it:
- opened fingerprint program & disabled everything which is of concern for authenticating with fingerprint
- deleted fingerprint with that software too
- disabled biometric device with windows tools
- deleted TPM with tpm.msc
- removed everything from BIOS regarding fingerprint, password for booting, hdd, etc
- resetted fingerprint with bios too
- loaded bios setup default (cause it was a BIOS update)
- shut down computer
- startup again and set everything in BIOS which is needed and has been disabled before
- did the same in windows (enabled everything again)
- rebootet.... prayed... computer prompts with "fingerprint matched" ==> first YEAH
- provided boot up password once....
- shutdown again....
- started with enrolling fingerprint only.... no prompt for password any more.... second YEAH

Lately I have been getting a rectangular screen titled Login Setting, with my Username and Password and asking me to Login. This screen shows up on opening the computer and has never been seen before the last month or so. It has one box titled Login Credentials with a username and password field and a second box titled Login Status at the bottom where it says "Profile not found" in red. I've never seen this before and ignoring it does not effect any operations. Is this legitimate or some kind of identity fishing?

http://www.mac-and-i.net/2012/04/flashback-detect-and-remove-uprising.html
In order to avoid detection, the installer will first look for the presence of some antivirus tools and other utilities that might be present on a power user's system, which according to F-Secure include the following:
/Library/Little Snitch
/Developer/Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/MacOS/Xcode
/Applications/VirusBarrier X6.app
/Applications/iAntiVirus/iAntiVirus.app
/Applications/avast!.app
/Applications/ClamXav.app
/Applications/HTTPScoop.app
/Applications/Packet Peeper.app
If these tools are found, then the malware deletes itself in an attempt to prevent detection by those who have the means and capability to do so. Many malware programs use this behavior, as was seen in others such as the Tsunami malware bot.

T420 ignores letters' cases in power-on password
Hi!
just noticed that when I start my laptop with power-on password it accepts the password regardless of the letters' cases I enter. For instance, if the password is set to 'qwerty' it boots up with 'qwerty', 'QWERTY', 'qWeRtY', 'QWErty' and so on. The same goes to HDD password. Is that a bug or a feature?

Solved!
Go to Solution. That's just how it works. The BIOS passwords actually use the scancodes of the keys that are pressed, and not the ASCII representation. In this implementation the modifiers (such as SHIFT key) are ignored.

Enter Admin or Power on Password
I cannot access laptop it said my password was incorrect now it wants me to Enter Admin or power on password/ It does not like the admin password I have and I lost ower on code.
This question was solved.
View Solution.Hi Vicki,
You would have needed to create the reset flash drive when originally setting up the password for option you're prompted for to work.
If you normally sign-on with an email and password, you can reset the password via another PC from the Microsoft page on the following link.
https://account.live.com/password/reset
Alternatively, if this is a Local Account, try the free application Here.
A final option would be to reinstall the OS via the Recovery Partition or your Recovery Media - these options are described in the HP document on the following link.

Hi folks,
I have a T61 in the office and I needed to restore it to defaults for use by another user. The computer had a power-on and hard disk password that was the same, set by the previous user. I went into the BIOS with this password and was able to clear the hard disk password. However when I tried to clear the power-on password it said it could not while the supervisor password was set. This was strange to me since all the passwords were the same and it never requested a supervisor password before.
I then proceeded to try to clear the power-on password with the instructions in the ThinkPad T61,
R61, and R61i (14.1-inch widescreen) Hardware Maintenance Manual. This involved disconnecting the main and backup batteries. After this it started up showing two messages, one that the date and time was not set and the second that the BIOS settings were in error and that it was using the default values. I then still got the power-on password prompt however. This time none of the previous passwords I set works! I'm locked out of the machine.
Can anyone help?

You will either need to remember the password, or find it out from the person who set it.

Forgotten password - Power-on Password
can someone please help me with this.
I have not logged into my pc for 5 months and i have forgotten my passwords.
i have turned on my pc and it goes to the 'ENTER POWER-ON PASSWORD' screen
can someone please tell me how to bypass this and or remove this setting/function from my pc
thanksYou're very welcome.
I cannot find any official documentation on your specific model or product number on HP's website but I did find a few other 110-005 models.
They all seem to have the same motherboard.
Below is the link to the motherboard specs I believe your PC has.

T43-W7 (new install) Fingerprint Software not interfacing with power-on password
Went through a remarkably painless upgrade of my old T-43 to W7 yesterday. After the W7 install, I added the Lenovo Toolkit, and let it load the recommended drivers/updates. Then to regain use of the fingerprint function, I d/l'd the latest version of CSS, which seemed to install just fine (per upgrade recommendations, I uninstalled the fingerprints/power-on password prior to upgrade).
In going through the enrollment process, the only checkboxes that appear above each "finger" are for Windows, not for the power-on password. The power-on password isenabled and set in BIOS for both the computer and the hard drive (password identical to the Windows User password). Tried with the Security Chip both Enabled and Disabled, and also tried "Clearing" the security Chip, to no avail.
The result so far is that fingerprint login is working great for W7, but no longer works at all for power on, as it did under W2k. I have an X301 that I upgraded from Vista to W7 on which all of this works perfectly, so I am pretty sure I know what should be possible, but maybe this is beyond the hardware function of W7 with the T43? Am I missing something?Vince69,
Thank you again for your suggestion. I tried updating the driver using the package you pointed to, and did not have any luck. Kept getting "Driver not found", (and include subdirs was checked). Also tried manually dropping into each subir in the file, and still no luck.
I came across an entry in http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/w7itprohardware/thread/aa965e55-de21-4dd0-93e2-05e6d14... which seems to address the "Unkown Device" issue. Go about halfway down the page, and the instructions provided by James Norman seemed to work for me--at least it made the error message go away.
But the original problem of the Fingerprint s/w interfacing with power-on password is still there. After fixing the device driver problem, I reinstalled Fingerprint Software (I had uninstalled it before fixing the Device Driver issue), and I have the same behavior and selection choices under "Settings" as I had before--none of the settings include anything to do with power-on password.
Any more suggestions? -

Use that code to go into the BIOS.
Disable all passwords that are enabled.
IF asked for the CURRENT password use that code.
IF asked for NEW password just hit enter.
If asked to VERIFY password just hit enter.
Save and exit.
