Setting a page background colour

Hi everyone,
Im new to InDesign, and am (or at least i thought i was), in the final stages of completing a brochure (A4 landscape format) for my photography business.
The brochure Im creating is intended as both a downloadable pdf and also for viewing on screen.
My issue is this:
Ive somehow managed to set it up so that the page background colour is black, which is what I want, as my text alternates between white and a shade of grey.
However, when I PDF this document, or try to physically print it, the pages show up as white, and so a lot of my white text does not show and the grey text looks almost invisible.
Can someone please enlighten me as to how I actually achieve what i would like to - i.e. black pages.
Many, many thanks in advance.

Thanks for your reply.
I figured that would be the way to go. Though I'm getting a glitch when using image gallery widgets where the background colour flashes white when zooming on an image on the final ipad book. The background fade effect when zooming is set by default to start from white I presume. Hope they fix that soon.

  • Setting page background colour

When setting page background colour I am currently using the shapes tool to create a colour rectangle to place in the background.
Are there any other ways to set page background colour, say to set a book wide preference for page colour, or any alternative method at all?

    Thanks for your reply.

  • Boring set of desktop background colours.

A few months ago, soon after I first bought my Mac, I managed to achieve a choice of the full spectrum of colours for my desk top background colour, ending up with a delightful shade of grass green. I've no idea how, but now, wanting a change I can't find anything in desk top / screen saver except the same old boring set of solid colors and I can't seem to access the spectrum ball at all in relation to desk top.
Incidentally, clicking on screen saver has of late resulted in a frozen screen and the beachball (Agh), necessitating the use of 'force quit' to return to normality.
Can anyone set out an uncomplicated route to help give a change to my desk top ? Big thank you in anticipation.

The background is just for the preview window.
The spectrum ball is a part of the built it colour menu, easily accessed with command shift C or show colours in various apps.
To get your apple green background using just apps available in Leopard.
Open TextEdit > Format > Show fonts which brings up the font menu with various options along the top of the window. Forth box from left contains a blank page icon > click on the blank page and choose your colour from the colour menu.
The TextEdit window will then be your colour > Make a big as possible > use command shift 3 to take a screen shot which will be on your desktop.
Double click screen shot which will open in preview > draw a cropping box with the curser as big as possible > Tools > Crop > Save in User > Pictures.
Access pictures folder from System prefs > Desktop >>
An easier way would be to use a graphics app but not as much fun
    Maybe Paintbrush

  • Browser background colour and page background colour

On one entry page of my blog, the browser background colour is over-riding the page background gradient colours. I've tried remaking the entry page by duplicating another entry page, but this still happens on just this one page.
Hoping someone will be able to work out why...?

    Thank you. It's http://www.noteworthy-women.co.uk/
The page in question is the 29 September entry for the blog page ('rehearsal notes'). This was on the 'Choir Members Only' site, but I've moved it to the 'public pages' site for this discussion. I can leave it there only overnight (British time).
    Thanks again.

  • Background colour around my website page in CSS

I want to set up a background colour around my website page. I can do this for each page individually in Page Properties but am looking for a way to do this through CSS so I can change all pages in the future. I thought I had succeeded by creating a new CSS property and applying it to the area to the side of my page, however, when I uploaded it, it was red instead of grey. Any suggestions welcome. Thanks.

Add some css for the body tag in your stylesheet...
    body {
         background-color:#000000;
This would make the <body> of each page black.
If you have already tried this, we would need to see your code to figure out why it isn't working, specifically, what in your page css or stylesheet.css is overwriting it.
Could you post a link to one of your pages?

  • [noob question] setting window background colour?

    Hi,
Am just getting to grips with basics of Xcode, Coacoa and IB, been looking at some easy examples and just set myself my first exercise; to build the C# Introductory Video example app
OK, basically all I want to do is open the colour picker from a button and set the window background colour. But still with nothing more than an empty window in IB I can't find any obvious means to define it's background colour (not even statically)?
Hope someone can help with this dead easy question... (my Coacoa programming book is still on it's way from Amazon
    Ceers,
    Rich
PS. just looking for a nudge in the right direction, please - not a step by step description how to write my sample app, as well meant as that might be. cheers

+Although I'm guessing from the underlying tone you're already pretty experienced and it's been a long time since you sat down yourself and first started to "look through the documentation"?!?+
Sorry didn't mean to let the tone bleed through that much.
But seriously I assumed there was an NSWindow function that did it, checked the documentation, found it, mocked it up in 5 minutes (alright 10 I'm still getting used to IB in Xcode 3), tested it to make sure it worked as expected and then answered your post. Not that you should have been able to do that as quickly but I could do it because I have slogged through the process for other objects I had used.
Really this is a pretty basic Cocoa kind of operation. I have object X supplied but Cocoa (eg NSWindow, NSTextBox, etc.) and I want to do operation Y. Operation Y is almost always already there for you just waiting to be used. Learning this process of finding these things in the documentation and using them is really crucial to being a proficient Cocoa developer.
In Xcode 2 Help > Documentation will give you the searchable API and just type in NSWindow. In Xcode 3 selecting an object - like NSWindow - will change the Help > Documentation menu to point to NSWindow directly.
Cocoa is a very "lived in" API and it has clearly been evolved by people who really used it so it has the buttons and levers right where you want them most of the time. I assumed that NSWindow had a function to change the color simply because it would make sense that it would. And when I checked it did, but my making that assumption and being able to find the function comes from doing the heavy lifting already on other objects.
I'm just hoping you take this as an example of how to do this and next time dig into the docs and find the function. There is no way to be good at it without doing it and getting good at it gives you access to Cocoa's rich API and will get you very far because you get all that programming other people have done for you for (almost) free.
    Good luck,

  • Black page background flashes grey when zooming on images

When I'm previewing my book on iPad I see that when I zoom in on an image (single image gallery widget) the page background which is black flashes grey momentarily. This happens on ipad but not when I preview on the mac.
Seems like the page wants to revert to the default white background everytime I click an image widget. Any way to set a book wide black background color? I currently create the page background colour by placing a black rectangle object in the background.
    Thanks anyone for any tips!

It seems there's a default setting when zooming on images that fades the background from white to black (I guess Apple is presuming all pages are white)? Anyone who have pages with colour background notice this?

  • Why does my book page background disappear?

I have created many books in Aperture, usually using custom layouts, so I can export as a PDF to print with Blurb.
Recently, a few of my books suffered a glitch.
I had set the page background (mostly) to Black.
When I went back to the book, I found that it had been replaced by White (or No Background)
Now the background drop-down menu, instead of providing colours, says only Item1 or Bkgd2.
Both are greyed out anyway, so I can't change them.
Duplicating the book does not help.
So the only option is to recreate the entire book, or export to Jpegs and chand All of the pages in photoshop.
    Anyone have any ideas??
    best regards
    Adrian

Thanks for replying, Leonie, but I'm afraid it hasn't solved it.
They were created with the latest version, 3.4.5.
And because the layout is a custom one (12x12") there is no original theme.
I first noticed the phenomenon when I transferred a project to a laptop from the iMac.
But it has happened three times since, seemingly at random.

  • Is printing background colours webpages, printing background colours is disabled firefox 5

Firefox 5,prints page background colours even though printing background colours is disabled in page setup.

More to the point on this, I think, is that both RGB and CMYK values listed for any spot color are "best approximations" (many, perhaps most, spot colors have no good CMYK equivalent, and that would be true as well for some subset using RGB) using Pantone's unknown color space. Even in that space the probability of getting an actual match between the simulation and the true spot ink is close to zero. Using some other space makes things worse, and since there is no way to know the sapce in use at Pantone, you're kind of up the creek.
For CMYK converison you can do reasonably well by using the Ink manager to convert the spot to process and check the bok to Use Lab Values at the same time. For RGB, I have no idea how to come close, at all.

  • How to Change background colour in the Arrange page

I find the LPX arrange page is generally rather too dark, is there a way of changing the background colour? I am sure L9 had this facility but cannot find it on LPX.

No, there (probably) isn't. You can only set the piano roll background lighter, but not the arrange background, unless this is mentioned somewhere in this thread about customizing the LP X color scheme:

  • Background colour for page for readability

In Microsoft word, I can change the background colour of a page to make it easier to read - good fro proofing long documents. Can't work out how to do this in Pages.... Don't want to print a colour, just to read comfortably....

    Sue,
You could slip a colored Shape behind the Text layer. You just have to remember to remove it or change its color when you print.
Insert > Shape > Rectangle. On the Format Bar, click Floating and, if necessary, No Wrap. Size the rectangle to cover your page, set the Fill Color, Arrange > Send Objects to Background.

  • How can I change the background colour when working on a doc in full screen view (pages)?

Recently I have been working on docs without the distraction of having to see my desktop around my page file by using the full screen view in pages. I do find the contrast to an all black screen too harsh though and it makes my eyes more tired than seeing the clutter of my desktop around the page. Is there any way I can change the background colour?
    Any help much appreciated!

When you are in Full screen mode move the cursor up to the top to show the Format bar. Then look to the far right. There you'll see Background  and a rectangle. Click on the rectangle and change the colour.

  • Changing background colour for a new Workspace page

    Thanks for any suggestion!

    Eddy,
This forum is for workspace manager - a database product that has no UI itself. I'm not sure what product you are using, but it's not WM.

  • Background Colour in Pages 5.0.1

Knowing how Apple likes to have everything sent electronically, and not printed, I am surprised that I can't change the background page colour of documents.
I can change the background of a word, sentence and paragraph. I can even select all the text on a page and change the background colour of that.
But there is still a white border all around this document, where the margins, headers and footers are.
    It looks really NAFF.
    Anyone got any ideas please.

Make a page size rectangle, color it and send it to the back or make it a master object.

  • Unable to set background colour JTableHeader in Java 1.6_18

We're moving our application from Java 1.4.2 to 1.6_18, so far without major problems but there's some small issues with the GUI. Originally we'd change the background colour of the JTableHeader, but in 1.6_18 that doesn't seem to work. Instead of colouring the complete header it just seems to draw an outline. It kind of gives the impression that there's something on top of the table header which hides the coloured background.
The code below shows what I'm trying to do, and gives different results when compiled in Java 1.4.2 and Java 1.6_18. It makes no difference whether I'm using the UIManager or setting the background directly on the JTableHeader.
The application still works fine of course, but it bugs me that I can't work out what the problem is, so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! I've already had a look at bug [6521138|http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=6521138], but it makes no difference whether a new JTableHeader is set, so I think it's different. Also, the workaround for bug [4776303|http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=4776303] has no effect so I think that doesn't apply either.

Ah yes, when I change that setting the background of the table header indeed gets the expected background colour.
