Setting up desktop background from iphoto resets after restarting my Mac OS..

Hello,
I have the Mac Os X 10.7.3 version on 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7 processor. I use Iphoto '11 version 9.2.3. My iphoto library shared on /Users/Shared/Ress.sparseimage and it's formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Two users are using same library and we have no problem while sharing this library.
The only problem occurs when I tried to set up the desktop background from iphoto. When I change the background from iphoto application and restart my computer, the desktop background resets to Andromeda Galaxy.
The reason it resets the background to Galaxy because the volume that contains shared library starts slower. I know this for sure because when I check the Devices section from Finder as soon as the computer starts I can’t see my shared volume on Devices and it takes up 5 or 10 seconds to appear in there.
In my opinion, somehow late launch for this shared volume changes the background’s path to /Library/Desktop Pictures and the first picture in there Andromeda Galaxy.jpg.
We can fix this problem by copying the picture to the path /Library/Desktop Pictures. But unfortunately this solution is very basic and will not satisfy me because I don’t want to copy my pictures from one path to another every time I want to change the background. That’s very frustrating.
I would like change my background from iphoto application. In fact when I use iphoto without sharing and setup the background from iphoto application, I don’t face this problem. This problem only occurs when I share my iphoto library on a volume as a sparseimage.
Best Regards,
HB

Just grab a bunch of photo's you want and place them into a new folder in your User/Pictures named desktop pics or something.
Then you can drag and drop copy certain ones from the shared iPhoto Library.
I keep my desktop and iPhoto Libraries seperate, iPhoto is personal and desktop pictures are just that. No need to waste space in iPhoto as I have over 680 desktop pictures and about 8000 iPhoto pictures, so I don't want to overload iPhoto anymore that it is already.
Once you get large enough desktop pictures the matter becomes mute, just rotate them every 30 or so minutes and it toss in a few new ones from iPhoto when you wish.
If you didn't know, you can point the system preferences > desktop pictures at a new folder in your Pictures folder,  there is no need to use the iPhoto Library or drop them into /Library/Desktop Pictures, this is rather risky to be messing inside that folder, in fact in 10.7 Apple has made it invisible to stop people from messing around in there.
Just click the little "+" sign to add a new folder in System Preferences > Desktop & Screensaver preferences.

  • Cannot select landscape photos as a desktop background from iPhoto events.

In the desktop preferences screen, when choosing a desktop background, I am able to see all of the normal options at the left. However, when I choose an image from the "iPhoto Albums" section, only vertically oriented images work. Landscape-oriented images don't update to the background (I get the basic Apple Blue.)
It appears to randomly effect my iPhoto albums, as some events have the problem, some do not, regardless of date of event or camera used.
When I add a folder and select the file manually (from the option at the bottom of the list), I have no problems... all images look fine.
I should also add that I do not allow iPhoto to manage my images, I manage my Photos folder and have the "Copy photos into the iPhotos library" option turned OFF.
I'm not sure if this is an iPhoto '08 problem or a Leopard problem, as I upgraded both at the same time during a fresh install.
PS - I've done most of the other trouble shooting things on Apple's support site, like creating a new iPhoto album and reimporting known problem-images, fixing permissions, re-creating the albumdata.xml file, etc. I even removed special characters from the Event Names and reset my keywords (I wasn't using them, anyway...)
    Any ideas?
Thanks in advance for your help!

    SIGH
Thanks for the suggestion, but it did not fix the problem. Since the general population uses iPhoto with the "copy files to the iphoto library" option turned ON, I decided to offload my images to an external drive and create a new library on my laptop, letting iPhoto do the organizing. (This is a big step for me, being an ex-windows user!)
A sample of images imported to the new iPhoto library seemed to register fine with the finder. Changing desktop images in the desktop prefs panel worked fine. All seems well and I'm looking forward to not having to manage the image folders and simply letting iPhoto import directly from the SD cards I use in my DSLR...
    EXCEPT...
I can't seem to get through an import session without Leopard crashing on me. I get the dreaded dark-gray waterfall and the "please restart your computer" message in 65 different languages. Admittedly, I'm importing 5000+ images from an external FW800 drive, but still!
So here's my question to y'all:
Do I start importing a folder at a time and keep my fingers crossed, or should I consider a fix more drastic (like re-installing iPhoto?) Does this even sound like an iPhoto problem? Do I have a deeper issue (like a bad install of Leopard?) Or, is this just early-adopter syndrome with brand-new versions of iLife and Leopard, and I need to deal with it until Apple patches the holes?
I've had this system crash on me 5 times in the last three days, and it's getting old. What is this, Vista?

I already tried right-click the page, choose View Page Info, then click Permissions. The first item is the site-specific permission for images and you should be able to reset back to the default here. This did not work.
I also tried right-click View Page Info and click Media. Click the first image on the list and observe the Block Images checkbox above the preview at the bottom. Arrow down the list until you come to a site that is blocked and unblock it. There was no unblock just a delete, so I deleted it. This did not work either.
I know it is a firefox issue because the images are all there when I log in using Internet explorer, but on firefox there are many of my images missing.

  • Can't set desktop image from iPhoto

my just purchased 17' macbook pro will not set the desktop image from my iphoto pictures I imported from my time machine

iPhoto uses the images from your Photos app. If you have an edited photo in iPhoto that you want to use as a wallpaper all you have to do in iPhoto is to Share or Copy the image to your Camera Roll. It will then be available for use as Wallpaper.

Don't let other people access your Mac in admin mode - they might change something a lot more important than the Desktop picture.
However you can use Automator: create an Application in it, and select 'Set the Desktop Picture' from the Library. Choose the picture you want. Save the application, then go to System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items and select the Automator application you just created. This will then run at startup and set your chosen picture.

  • Setting the desktop background image via Powershell

    UPDATE:
I found the solution that addressed my problem, which I posted in a post below. Keeping the original post for Internet historical reasons as I the hope this helps someone else later on in their search for a solution.
    ===============
I have Bing'ed and I have Google'd and I haven't found a solid answer to setting the desktop wallpaper programmically.  I am trying to do this via PowerShell, but I would be happy for any other language flavor or application to work.
Below is the code I have tried to set the desktop background image. This has been scrounged from a few sources across the web. This solution works 25% of the time and I haven't figured out what the cause for success or failure of the execution. Or maybe
it's neither, but waiting for Explorer to refresh. The only way to see the change 100% is to log out and log back in.
I am running Windows 8.1 btw.
    Thank you for looking.

Great news! I found the solution and all props and credit goes to

This solution has worked for me 100% of the time on Windows 8. The only gotcha I found (minor detail) was when setting this process to run as a scheduled task, I had to run it as elevated privileges for the code to compile in memory. Running this function
from PowerShell at the command prompt was fine.
NOTE: The code below is a slight trimmed down version posted by jsd1982 to just set the desktop wallpaper. I removed the image fetching from the Internet and the color inversion.

  • Change Desktop background from another account ?

    Hi Guys,
Just wondering if it's possible to change a desktop background from another account on the same machine.
I'm running 10.6.8, and there's no particular reason for doing this at present, but we do have a couple of work machines where the user has been restricted from making changes to the machine, and it'd be easier to do this from the administrator account.
Also, is it possible to change a desktop background via Apple's remote desktop?
    Thanx in advance.

This same thing happens to me, and while not the end of the world, it is defintely annoying.  Have you figured it out?  Thanks!

  • MBP Retina Desktop Wallpaper resets after restart

Earlier this week I got my new MBP 15" Retina, and completed a clean installation of applications from my old MBP.
This morning I had to install and update and for the first time had to restart the computer.  After restarting the origional wallpaper shows on login.
After login and going into Desktop & Screen Saver Settings it shows the proper desktop image.
    Steps Completed:
    1) Problem only occurs on Restart or Shut Down.  A Log Off will maintain the correct wallpaper.
    2) Tried changing to Standard Desktop Picture or an iPhoto gallery photo.
    3) Unlocked '/Users/scottdavis/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist' made wallpaper change (it changes date modified).  Restart.  Did not resolve.
    4) Tested the same process on MBP 17" Early 2008, works correctly.
    5) Running OSX 10.8.2 - completed MBP Update 2.0 (is where I had to restart)

    Hi all,
I have had this same issue with OS X Lion and it continued on to OS X Mountain Lion as well. I have had the wallpaper switching on me to the default solid blue color whenever I restarted (every month or so) and when switching between users (every other day or so). So this issue was very frustrating having to go back in and reset the wallpaper to my preference whenever I switched to either user. I found a solution that has been working for me for several restarts and several switching of users now:
First, I took some of your advice by locating all of my wallpapers into a 'Wallpaper' folder located in each user's 'Documents' directory. I copied to same wallpapers to each user so both user's have the same wallpapers to choose from.
Then, I installed the latest stable version of 'OnyX' (freeware software). I used OnyX on both user accounts to run through practically all the settings to clean up the entire Mac (Mac Mini, mid 2011) including: Verify [S.M.A.R.T. Status, Structure of volume, and Preferences], Maintenance [Permissions], Cleaning [System cache, User cache, Internet cache, Fonts cache, Log cache, Misc. cache]. I generally left the default checked boxes alone and didn't change any settings and Executed the program to run as default.
After running OnyX, I re-set my wallpapers for each user and went ahead and tested the restarting of the computer and switching back and forth between users. It was very easy to duplicate the bug previously, but now I could not get the wallpaper to switch back to the default blue as before. Everything seems stable with my wallpaper selection now.
Hope this helps someone. Thanks everyone for your input too.
As a side note, my Mac is running much smoother and quicker now too.  =)

  • How do I set the desktop background to automatically change every so often?

I had my desktop background set to change every five seconds, with the photos coming from a folder in my iPhoto files. I then made a new folder of background pictures in iPhoto, but when I switched to them and tried to make it "change every 5 seconds", or 1 minute etc., it would not change. I then reverted back to the original group of files and it STILL wouldn't change, even though it had been doing so for the many months that I had been using this set of background photos before.
I have clicked on "change every 5 seconds" and "random order", but for some reason I can now only change the pictures manually by clicking on them in the right hand pane of the system preferences window. Please can someone tell me how to make them change automatically again...?

Have you tried restarting your computer and attempting it again?
Sorry if this is a dumb question, but a lot of people run their machines 24/7 and sometimes a little reboot helps.
