Settings for Roaming Network using Time Capsule plus old Airport Extreme

Hi all
I am trying to set up a network in the most effective way for my home and am experiencing some difficulties which I hope your support can help me overcome.
My home is constructed of concrete reinforced with steel and consequently the walls are dense and wireless signals are adversley affected. I have two wireless base stations via which I hope to provide wireless coverage to my whole home which is on the ground floor level only. My Time Capsule is located at one end of my home and is directly connected to my modem which receives the external fibre optic supplied internet connection. The Time Capsule is managed via Airport Utility 6.1. A mac is connected to the Time Capsule via ethernet cable - the Time Capsule also provides a wireless signal. Also connected to the Time Capsule via a long ethernet cable that is routed in internal cable channels within my home is an old conical shaped white Airport Extreme. The Airport Extreme is located at the other end of my house and also has a mac connected to it via ethernet and provides a wireless signal too. The Airport Extreme is managed via Airport Utility 5.6.
I hope to have a wireless network that my iphones and ipad can connect to in various areas of the house. I have read the instructions for setting up a Roaming Network, yet the screen shots provided do not reflect the screens I see using Airport Utility 5.6 and 6.1. Can anyone please assist with the settings that I require?
Also I have a question regarding a roaming network - if I connect a mobile device to the wireless network near to my Time Capsule and then move to the other end of my house near to the Airport Extreme what should happen to the wireless connection strength? Currently with my existing settings the mobile device is maintaining the connection to the Time Capsule and dropping to extremely low connections levels rather than picking up the wireless signal from the Airport Extreme. Should this be the case and if so is there some better way to set up my network?
Originally I had the Airport Extreme configured in a different location closer to the Time Capsule to extend the wireless network from the Time Capsule. The problem was that the Airport Extreme frequently seemed to not provide the newtork. I'm not sure if it lost the network from the Time Capsule or had some other problem.
All help will be greatly appreciated.

So just to be clear.. the Mac at the other end of the house.. has internet connection.. via ethernet.. through the old extreme.. ethernet to the TC.. which is connected via ethernet to the fibre connection.
Is the airport extreme in bridge mode?
As long as it is, you are good to go.
On both the TC and AEBS you create a wireless network.
On both TC and AEBS you name it the same.. eg 24ghz (please use short, no space, pure alphanumeric name).
You set both with the same security.. WPA2 Personal
You set both with the same passkey.. 8-12 characters pure alphanumeric.
BUT you set the wireless channels.. there are three channels that do not overlap.. 1, 6, 11 (13 in europe ME??)
Suggest you set TC to 6.. and set the AEBS to 11.
It might work on auto but IMHO wireless is something you are better controlling than leaving it to dumb algorithm

Yesterday I purchased the 4th Gen Time Capsule to replace my Airport Extreme (4th gen) as my "main" router. However, I want to repurpose my Airport Extreme to extend the network AND use the Ethernet ports to connect additional devices. I will then use my Airport Express solely to "join the network" for Airplay purposes.
I connected the Time Capsule directly to my cable modem using Ethernet. I set up the Time capsule in Airport, checked the "allow this network to be extended" and used WPA2 Personal encryption. I then set up the Airport Extreme to "join an existing network" wirelessly and mimic the same network name, encryption type and password. Finally, I set up the aiport express as I mentioned above.
This setup does a great job of extending my network with increased performance. However, when I plug my Mac into the Airport Extreme using ethernet, it does not recognize. This Mac IS connected via Aiport. However, under the "ethernet" option in the Network Menu, it says "No IP Address Found."
I've searched some other forums and thought this configuration would work. Also, I apologize if this seems like and amateur post. This is my first time using the Apple support Community.

I set up the Time capsule in Airport, checked the "allow this network to be extended" and used WPA2 Personal encryption
Those are the correct settings for the "main" router.
I then set up the Airport Extreme to "join an existing network" wirelessly and mimic the same network name, encryption type and password
The AirPort Extreme does not provide any additional wireless coverage and the Ethernet ports are not enabled if the device is configured to "join a wireless network"
Check your setttings using AirPort Utility - Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab located just below the row of icons
Wireless Mode = Extend a wireless network
Wireless Network Name = Same name as the Time Capsule wireless network
Enter a check mark next to "Allow wireless clients"
Wireless Security = Same setting as the Time Capsule wireless network
Wireless Password = Same password at the Time Capsule wireless network
Confirm Password
Click Update at the lower right and allow 25-30 seconds for the AirPort Extreme to restart.
Configured correctly, the AirPort Extreme will extend the wireless network and the Ethernet ports on the Extreme will be enabled.
I good starting location for the extending device is a location about 1/2 to 2/3 the distance from the main router to the area that needs more wireless coverage.
Once you have the AirPort Extreme configured and working correctly, post back if you would like a tip to find out exactly which device....your Time Capsule or the AirPort Extreme that your laptop is connected to at any given location.

The Guest Network function of the Time Capsule and AirPort Extreme cannot be enabled when the device is in Bridge Mode. Unfortunately, with another router...the Telus...upstream on your network, Bridge Mode is indicated as the correct setting for all other routers on the network.
If you can replace the Telus gateway with a simple modem (that performs no routing functions), you should be able to configure either the Time Capsule or the AirPort Extreme....whichever is connected to the modem....to provide a Guest Network.

Sorry, but it is not possible to "extend" the Guest Network using either wireless or an Ethernet connection.

Airport Extreme Base was controllable from either computer up through Snow Leopard (I didn't do any of the Lion upgrades). Then when I upgraded to Mavericks I lost the ability to use Airport Utility with this hardware on the Sunflower but could still connect wirelessly to network without any problems. But now with the Time Capsule upgrade the Sunflower is blocked from network by a dialogue that requests ony WEP password, not WPA pwd used by Time Capsule. Neither can I use the old airport extreme base to extend the time capsule network since I can't input the correct password/encryption approach to join it. Is there a work around? Would a newer but old Airport Express be able to extend network to Sunflower? Or maybe a third party wireless (such as Netgear, Dlink, etc) that has browser type control rather than special utility?

I can’t claim to completely grasp the issue(s) you’re describing, but the underlying problem is presumably your iMac’s obsolete AirPort card. Whatever the case, an obvious (if not particularly helpful) answer to your stated question would be to connect your iMac with an ethernet cable, using powerline adapters as an alternative if you don’t want to have wire running all over the place.
My still fully functional clamshell iBook, with an original AirPort card, connects wirelessly to my 4th Generation TC network by means of a cheap 802.11b/g/n USB Wi-Fi adapter. This might be an option for you too.

No, if you were planning to have the AirPort Time Capsule connect wirelessly and extend the Asus WiFi signal, since it would not be compatible with another manufacturer's router for that purpose.
Another way of saying the same thing here would be that if you want to extend the network wirelessly, it will take two Apple routers to do so

Extending my network. Time Capsule-Air Express and Extreme.

So currently my network is a time capsule in my basement and an airport express upstairs behind a tv in my living room. I have an extreme that I'd like to use to boost my signal in the back yard where I use the remote app on my iphone to control itunes. They are all 802.11n(?). I would like to place the extreme close to a basement window that has clear sight to the lower back yard area.
What is the easiest way to go about setting this up?

Assuming that your AirPort Extreme is the 802.11n version, (it has a square shape), here is how to setup the "extend" configuration with the Time Capsule. The AirPort Extreme must be positioned where it can receive a good signal from the Time Capsule.
I was not clear on whether you already had the AirPort Express setup to extend (you must have an 802.11n version of the Express to allow this), or whether you have it configured to "join" your wireless network for use with AirTunes.
_On the Time Capsule_
Open AirPort Utility
Click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons
Make sure that you have a check mark next to "Allow this network to be extended"
Make note of the exact Security setting that you are using
Update to save any changes
The Time Capsule will restart and you should see a green light in 15-20 seconds
_On the AirPort Extreme_
Open AirPort Utility
Click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the icons
Wireless Mode = Extend a wireless network (If you do not see this choice, hold down the option key on your computer as you click on the selection box)
Wireless Network Name = Exact name of your Time Capsule wireless network. (This should appear as a choice in the setup)
Enter a check mark next to Allow wireless clients
Wireless Security = Exact same setting as your Time Capsule wireless network
Wireless Network Password = Exact same password as your Time Capsule wireless network
Verify Password as above
Update to save changes

No, sorry.. there is no way for the TC to see the files.. and even if you plug the hard disk into the TC there is no mechanism in the TC to drag the files to itself.. The TC is absolutely a dumb network attached drive.. everything you want to do must be done from a computer.

If your Time Capsule was purchased in the last few years, chances are you have a simultaneous dual band Time Capsule.
In order to extend both bands using wireless only, you would need a new AirPort Extreme, since the AirPort Express would only be able to extend one band from the Time Capsule.
If you only need to have one band extended, then an AirPort Express would likely work for your application.
Whether you choose the Extreme or Express, keep in mind that the correct location for an extending device is a point that is approximately half the distance from the Time Capsule and the general area that needs more wireless coverage.
Apple's instructions to configure the "Extend" setup are here. Although an AirPort Extreme is pictured in the example, the instructions for an AirPort Express would be the same.

How do I set up a network using time capsule

I have a 2TB time capsule and an airport express, however I would like to move my capsule to another room where I want to connect 2pc's, which do not have wireless adapters and connect them via Ethernet to the capsule to allow them to go online. My printer is in this room currently connected to airport express to print wirelessly, but I want to put my airport back on my stereo.
In addition I want to continue backing up my iMac, wirelessly, the problem i am experiencing is the time capsule needs to be connected to the router via Ethernet.
Moving the capsule to the other roodoes too far, without a direct route to run Ethernet cable.
Can this be done? Any help is very much appreciated.

Used Time Machine (USB) to Airport Extreme

Hi,
Last year, I set up a 1TB external hard-drive as my Time Machine... It all worked perfectly. Currently it has over 600GB worth of stuff on it. My macbook has a hard-drive of 320gb.
I recently bought a used Airport Extreme (A1354) and want to connect my existing 'Time Machined' external hard-drive but it won't allow me to...? It is recognised- I just cant seem to back up or access files at all.
In an article I read it said that the pathway when connected directly to my macbook via USB is different to a pathway when connected via wireless connection.
So my questions are:
• Can I rename the pathway?
• Or do I need to buy a new external harddrive and start afresh?• If I do have to start a fresh, is there a way to merge my old time machine files to the new time machine files - - - so I can keep both my 'time Machines" in the one place (Instead of having one lot of time machine from August 2011 to August 2012 and another time machine from September 2012 to x date)
I can't even restore all my time machined files to my macbook- then reformat my External Hard drive, because I only have 320 GB
I hope I am making sense. I am not too high tech so . . . my apologies =)
P.S. Sorry if this has already been answered-- I have read countless articles and can't seem to find an answer.

Yeah I got an answer to connecting my existing time machine to my airport extreme
The airport extreme will not let you connect any 'time machine' - new or existant - as it acts as a drag and drop type of saving.... so i.e. if I want to save a file - i will need to go to shared>airport extreme and then drag and drop my file there to save it- it will not do it automatically like time machine. This is so if you wanted the automatic wireless backup, you would have to go out and buy a time capsule.

HT4260 Can an Airport Extreme be used to form a roaming network with Time Capsule?

I tried the on-line instructions above to extend my Wi-Fi network with a roaming network but the graphics in the instrucions apparently show an earlier version of Airport Utility. Following the intent of the instructions, e.g., ethernet cable connection ports, etc., all I have achieved is a yellow flashing light on Airport Extreme. Airport Extreme has been reset to factory settings but it is not seen by the network.
Do I have it backward, for example, should the Airport Extreme be the base station and the TIme Capsule be the extended station?
What do you think I am doing wrong? Or, is this an impossible extension?

Suggest that you use the much more functional and useful AirPort Utility 5.6 for Mac OS X Lion which was released at the same time as AirPort Utility 6.0.
Keep both 5.6 and 6.0 on your Mac and use the one that you want.

Wired network using Time Capsule

I'm building a new house soon and want to maximise the wired and wireless networking opportunity while I've got the chance. We currently have two MacBooks and an iMac in the household, plus iPhone, iPod and iPad. I have a 1TB Time Capsule which I currently use as a router, very satisfactorily, wired and wireless.
I want to incorporate wired network access points in five or maybe six different rooms, share at least two printers across the network, and enable wi-fi throughout the house for the other portable devices and guest access. Our TV will be "internet-ready" with a built-in ethernet port. I'd also like to be able to play music from mobile devices, wired and/or wirelessly, to an output such as a Bose Wave Radio (which has an AUX jack), and the TV.
I'm looking for the optimum solution to integrate all these things, starting with the need to add additional ethernet ports to the Time Capsule. I'd be quite happy to buy a second TC if needed, as it would give me addiitonal back-up storage for the future.

I am trying to transfere all my settings and everything from my Timemachine to a cleaned up MacBookAir - due to it recent freez and corrupted all and start-up problem... Password was on a Note page and it was wiped up too.
It asks: Enter your password to server "svetlana's Time Capsule" so that Time Machine can access it.
I have connected TM and laptop by wire today (network to USB) - but same question pops up.

Extending an existing wireless network using Time Capsule

I connected my Time Capsule via Ethernet cable to my network. I used the airport utility to extend my existing wireless network (Cisco router)k. After that my wireless devices were disconnected and I got a message stating "Unable to join wireless network". The macbook that I used to set up the Time Capsule showed a message along the lines that a device on the network was trying to use the macbook's IP address, I changed the macbooks IP address and then was able to connect my ipad and iphone to the wireless network but the connection was unusable as it was so slow. has anyone done this successfully and if so do you have nay advice

If you connect the TC to the network by ethernet you do not extend an existing networking.. indeed you cannot.. only works with apple routers and no ethernet.
You create a wireless network.. you can use roaming .. ie use the same wireless name and security settings as the existing Cisco router but you must set different channels.
If you need instructions in that setup what version airport utility are you using. I would strongly recommend a version 5.. it is so superior cf toyland v6.

Extending wireless network using Time Capsule

I have been trying to sort this issue out for some time.
Basically I have a Thompson Wireless Router which connects to my ISP, this is downstairs broadcasting a wireless network to my house.
I want to put the Time Capsule upstairs, to extend the WLAN and also connect my Xbox over Ethernet.
No matter what I try I cannot get it to work, it ends up setting up 2 WLANs where the Thomson WLAN works (as there is an ISP connection) and the TC wont (as its not connected)
What I want is for the Thomson WLAN to be extended via the TC to allow my Xbox on to Live...
I also have a Mac Mini upstairs that would connect either via the TC WLAN or through ethernet.
Any help you can offer would be amazing

If you are trying to "extend" the wireless signal from the Thompson router through the Time Capsule using wireless only, this is probably not going to work.
The reason for this is that Apple's "extend a wireless network" feature appears to be a proprietary technology that works only among other Apple devices. For that reason, it is highly unlikely that the Thompson router and Time Capsule would be compatible for the purpose that you desire.
If you are able to connect the Time Capsule to the Thompson router using an Ethernet connection, you could configure the Time Capsule to "create a wireless network" using the exact same wireless network name, security settings and password as the Thompson network. In addition, the Time Capsule must be configured as a "bridge" in Bridge Mode for this to work correctly.
If you cannot run the Ethernet cable, you might want to look at a pair of Etherent powerline adapters to accomplish the same task by sending the Ethernet signal over the existing AC powerlines in your home.
