Several  iTunes in one Mac

An iTunes question but related to one Mac computer's common application in two or more operating systems.
If, when assigning an iTunes account, the unique computer and person identity is known I wonder why logic counts 1 for Leopard, 1 for Vista and 1 for Windows 7 iTunes.
All I want to do is listen to and/or watch my purchased media in my computer without worrying that I'll lose ability if I forget to deactivate say Windows 7 or maybe Leopard going to Snow Leopard or through having to reinstall an OS from scratch due to some failure beyond any other means of recovery.
Having lost my account in the past for ~8 to 12 months I really do not want that to happen again.

I've had my eye on an HP EX485 MediaSmart Home Server (NAS)

  • Can I copy my iTunes from one Mac to another to a distant location?

I have 2 homes one in NYC and the other in upstate NY. I have multiple Macs at both locations all using Snow Leopard and the latest version of iTunes(9). I only have 1 iTunes library I maintain at the upstate location and have to bring my iPod to the NYC location to play my music. Can I not copy my iTunes library to the NYC location using Home Sharing or using some other method? I often forget to bring my iPod and am left without my music.

Since I had a problem with my Mac's drive that suddenly failed (I am able to read ONLY), I replaced the internal HD with my emergency HD that I had backedup a few months before. I would like to know if there's a way to copy my settings from one mac to another? Is there a specific folder for all apps or do I have to find out each and every single file for each app?
    I need the settings for
    System (view, font, color,)
    Finder (view, etc)
iTunes (that include all library, playlists, etc),
    Firefox (Bookmarks, settings & plug-ins),
    Safari (Bookmarks, settings & plug-ins),
    Address Book (contacts)
Thuderbird (emails accounts, contacts, passwords, etc)
Stickies (stickies on the dock - i have info on there unsaved)
    Filezilla (FTP infos)
    Would appreciate.
    Thnx.
All that info is found in your user/library folder, I just did a 60 machine rollout and copied all those settings from user/library, just be forewarned that if you upgrade software those setting will not take on the machine, for example Adobe CS 3,4 will not usable by CS5.  let us know if you need more help.  Also make sure you copy most of your preferences in the user/library/prefences folder.
Note: If you are using an identical backup with all apps and user settings, you can just copy all folders from user to your new home folder.  Remember that only if the image or backup is identical to your production OS.

  • Running two copies of iTunes on one MAC

I have a couple of different user sign-ons on my MAC, I need to be able to access iTunes on both, but I want them both to share the same library. Is this possible?
I tried setting up iTunes for the second user and it had no songs, so I tried to reroute the access back to the original users library. Well after changing the access to the original user, I was able to get the songs in the second iTunes.
However, now the iTunes from the original user ID can't find most of the songs even though I did not change their locations!
    So I have 2 questions.
    1) Can you even run two iTunes under different User IDs that can access the same iTunes library? If so, how?
    2) If you can't, how do I get my original iTunes to see all my songs again without having to go through them one at a time? I have over 17,000 songs!
    Thanks!

Note that when it says "publicly accessible location", it needs to be a place where everyone has read and write access. The most common such place is the Shared folder in the Users folder, but you can place the music elsewhere if you change the access permissions manually (don't start tinkering with permissions unless you're confident you know what you're doing and can reverse things if they get messed up).

  • Itunes accounts one mac with one present account

i want to add/delete songs/video of my son's iphone but want it to stay under my wife's itunes account, but i want to do this on my imac which is under my own itunes account.  I could just delete him off my wife's account but then he may loose his game apps and he is touchy about that because he is on a certain earned level on minecraft(some kids game).  If it wasn't for the game apps no problem but he wants to keep those especially the ones he is on different levels. The songs/videos i want to put on his iphone were not downloaded from the apple store. running all updated OS on imac and iphone.''
Is there a solution to this? I have been reading up on home sharing, authorization/deauthorization, creating new user accounts.  All didn't seem to touch on this. Doesn't seem as it is possible so throwing this out there before i give up

  • Can't iTunes from one mac, but can from others

On my Mac Pro, when I go into iTunes, choose "multiple speaker", I get a list of the airport express devices in the house...but I cannot check the boxes next to any of them (except the computer). However, from my MacBook Pro, I can. I run SL, have repaired permissions, etc. I just can't choose to stream to any of the AE units. Suggestions?

I checked that. I can see them in itunes. But front row cannot see them. Both are up to date and sharing. If i manually selct it from inside itunes. no problem. But no frontrow. so no mac remote

  • Two different iPhones and two differnt iTunes on one Mace Pro.. best parcti

We have a 3G and a 3G3. I have a Leopard Boot drive and a SL Boot drive, both with the latest version of iTunes. I have some questions:
    1. Will 2 installs of iTunes run on the same computer each on different boot drives (either one or the other will be running but NOT at the same time...)
2.When you run a backup of your iPhone using iTunes does it back up the phones contacts to the Address book or to somewhere else? Will a restore of the iphone backup restore the phone's contacts if address book was empty?
I was thinking of using Leopard / address book to BU one iPhone and SL for the other as we do not want to merge contacts. Is there a way to use one iTunes to back up both iPhones yet not merge all contacts in Adress book?

Phone contacts will back up to the address book, but just create two contact lists for you and your wife:
    File - Create Group
Updates made on your phone can be ticked to update to your individual contact list too. Another bonus of using one itunes account is the sharing of paid apps

Type "move itunes library" into the google search bar.
Or use migration assistant to move everything over.
Or copy everything from your backup copy to your new computer.
Or copy the entire itunes folder to the new computer

  • Can multiple iphones with multiple itunes accounts be synced to one mac keeping apps seperate over the air?

We have about 20 iPhone's in our environment and syncing and updating them has become a real chore lately.  Everyone has their own iTunes account and apps that they use. Is there a way that they can be synced, backed up and updated over the air (not iCloud) to the same MAC?  Because we are in the financial sector we will not be able to use iCloud. Should we look into some sort of private cloud and if so; any suggestions on how to accomplish it would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you in advance,
    J

We have several macs, several ipods, a couple of iphones, several itunes store accounts. So far no problem. You might have to share passwords if you want to share content. I think iStore accounts can only be used on up to 5 computers. We have 7, so have to be a little careful about that. I don't think there is a limit on how many iDevices can be used with one account. I also don't think there is a limit on how many accounts can be used on a single computer (might be wrong about that). You have to be logged into the iStore to download content, and your computer has to be registered with the account to use the content, but once it is on, and registered, syncing to an iPod is not a problem (you do not have to login in again for each account the content was purchased from). I'm just glad I only have two kids, and one wife - things could get trickier in a big family with . . .

I am trying to follow the instrucitons for moving my iTunes account to a new Mac from a PC.  I wish to use the External Hardrive Method,  (also I have too much info to fit into the free iCloud space) ... and I am wondering how to handle several iTunes accounts for my son and daughter.  We all share the itunes media folder, but I use the control-click option to open either mine, my sons, or my dauthers account.
I.e.  On the old windows PC I have itunes, Richard's itunes, Justin's itunes, and Rachael's iTunes folders.  The instructions speak of the simple itunes folder ... so, do I copy all of these folders to the external hard drive and will things operate as before?

Yes, you copy each one's iTunes folder to the /Home/Music/ folder in each of their separate user accounts. You will first need to create a separate user account for each of them using the Users & Groups preferences.

  • ITunes 7.0.2 sees shuffle on one Mac, not the other

I have one Mac with several System disks. All at 10.4.8 and iTunes 7.0.2. One system sees the new shuffle and will loads tunes. The other will ask to erase and sync and I agree. Then I choose songs and then apply. One system will go and load up the shuffle (with the proper image of the new shuffle in iTunes). The other (with a generic iPod image in iTunes) will say it cannot update because it cannot find the shuffle! On that problem system drive, I removed iTunes (receipt and helper) and then re-installed iTunes from the dmg. Same problem.
What other files is iTunes using that are corrupt on the problem system drive?
You may ask, why not use the good system? Well, the problem system is my everyday system with all the apps working! This system drive also has all the tunes files. This also has been through many upgrades.
It is time to start over?

The only receipts I have for iPod are the updaters for their firmware and the new reset program.

I still think there is some file that got munged and it is preventing iTunes from working properly. This file is not provided by iTunes, but must be part of the OS.
    Here's hoping for a solution

When I get my new computer, obviously I will download Itunes. My Ipod still has all the music on it and the external hard drive is ok.
I don't want to "erase" or lose any information when I sync with a new itunes that is "empty"
What are the steps? After I download Itunes and set the folder location to my external harddrive what is next? Will Itunes recognize my IPOD? Will it load the music/list from my ipd or external into itunes?
    Thanks in advance

You should start "Home Sharing".  You will need to authorise your two computer.  Once Home Sharing is activated, you will see shared iTunes libraries and it will allow you to simply drag'n drop any content.
