SharePoint 2013 OS: Windows Server 2008 R2 vs Windows Server 2012 Standard

Hi Team,
We are thinking on upgrading from SharePoint 2010 to SP 2013 soon. I have been researching about the server OS I should install as host, and it seems that SharePoint 2013 is fully compatible by now with both Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard + SP1 and
Windows Server 2012 Standard. In my opinion we should go with server 2012, but Windows server 2008 is the norm here at our organization and our Infrastructure team seems reluctant to upgrade servers to 2012 yet.
My question is, what SharePoint or Windows 2012 features will we miss if we decide to stay on Windows 2008?  What are the perks (selling points) of going with 2012 over 2008? (besides the obvious Microsoft support range extension).
Thanks!
-Rob.

If you stay on Windows Server 2008 R2 you will enter the extended/out of support phase sooner, of course. You will miss out on IIS improvements, although in practical terms it may not mean much.
There are extra patches required for a 2008 R2 deployment that are not needed on 2012 for SharePoint 2013. But other than that, I think the other big issue is that mostly in the community, you'll find people running Server 2012 which means issues are better
'known' by the community, versus 2008 R2 in combination with SharePoint 2013.

    Hi,
Can you follow workaround mentioned in below msdn blog
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archive/2007/11/01/5826719.aspx
As per the blog you have to open the msi log files which must be located at
    C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Setup Bootstrap\Log
In MSI log files search for the error mentioned in blog. Below link will help you read setup log files

  • Windows Server 2008 r2 as Windows XP Pro 2.0 (Issue: 1)

Windows Server 2008 r2 as Windows XP Pro 2.0 (Issue: 1)
Flabbergasted at the sheer level of idiocy required to use Windows 7 Ultimate or Windows 8.1 Pro I remain a stead fast winXPro user to this day (mid-2014) and beyond. My i3-3225 XP machine turns 2000+ Passmark system scores and excels at everything the
way we all use to, before Microsoft's policy of operating systems built for idiots, by idiots came to pass. Then as a sheer act of desperation I tried Server 2008 r2... is it the OS I have dreamed of? Short of an XP Theme conversion kit I have questions...
Problem 1) Windows Explorer: In the folder directory left pane... the little [+] box next to the folder names flash on and off each time I use the right window pane. Can I by any and all means make them not do this, remain visible, sit still; like XP used
    to do?
Problem 2) Start Menu: This popup is a double wide window pane, two columns of annoyance. Can I reduce this to a single wide by removing the right pane entirely by any and all means. I have removed every button from the right pane, but it still exists, it still
has a default picture user icon and says Administrator.
Problem 3) If specific programs/drivers are unavailable for this OS 2008 r2, I presume win 7 x64 by default work.
Problem 4) Passmark benchmarking software tested my system, with windows 8.1 I had a processor score of 9,400, but server 2008 r2 put out only 8,100 in repetitive tests. Why the slowdown? I only use this as an XP like os, no actual server stuff, should i disable
    something?

Windows Server is not intended to replace Windows XP. i would advice to try Windows 7 or 8 instead.
    1) I cannot picture what you mean. ther is a setting to define wheter the left pane should follow if you browse in the right one. Tools- folder options- general 'navigation pane'
2)Windows vista/2008 is the last version that had a (optional) single pane start menu. if you don't like the current one, ther is third party software available to replace the start menu
    3) yes, these will be ok
    4) 2008 R2 is a server OS and is out-of-the bow not optimized for foreground applications. Windows 8.1 on the other hand is a newer and more performant OS optimized for client usage. in both cases a lot of performance gain is to be expected by selecting
the right drivers, disabling or unisntalling unneeded software and windows features, disabling unneeded services. I would recommend to (a least) go to computer properties -advanced settigns- advanced and set 'adjust for best perfomance of" to programs (instead
    of background services)

  • How to upgrade Windows Server 2008 Foundation to Windows Server 2008 Standard

I have a Dell server with Windows Server 2008 Foundation installed. I am now on a larger network which has their own servers for authentication and the Windows Server 2008 Foundation will not let join a domain with more than 15 users. I was told that I needed
to upgrade Windows server 2008 foundation to Windows server 2008 Standard and that process can be done "in place" but I can't find how do do it. I called Dell and they said they basically said they didn't know what I was talking about.
    How do I  do this?

According to the first one you can perform an in-place upgrade.

for installing the second Windows Server 2008 includes on the Premium Edition you do not Need to download a Iso file.
    on this link:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc794696(v=ws.10).aspx is mentioned the following:
To install Windows SBS 2008 Premium, do the following:
    Install Windows SBS 2008 Standard.
For installation instructions about how to install Windows SBS 2008 Standard, see the
Windows Small Business Server Installation Guide at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=125717.
Install the second server by using Windows Server 2008, included with Windows SBS 2008 Premium, and then join it to the Windows SBS 2008 domain.

  • SQL Server 2008 Installation on Windows 7

I tried to install SQL Server 2008 on a Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit (Enterprise Edition Trial Edition). The system check was ok and the installation started successfully but at the end there were some errors. In the logfile there were stacktraces describing failures trying write operations on the registry. What can I do to install SQL Server 2008 on my operating system?

    Hello ChunSong Feng,
thanks for your advice. Herewith I send you the text parts from detail.txt with the detailed error description. The whole file is too big to send as content.

  • Windows 2008 64-bit SQL Server 2008 64-bit Linked Server fails - ODBC connects but has issues

Installed the 64 but Oracle 11g client and Oracle ODAC.
From SQL Server Management Studio run script :  exec master.dbo.xp_cmdshell 'PING OracleHostNameHere'        Ping was successful
OraOLEDB.Oracle shows up in the Provider list.  Run This Script:
    EXEC master.dbo.sp_MSset_oledb_prop N'OraOLEDB.Oracle', N'AllowInProcess', 1
    GO
    EXEC master.dbo.sp_MSset_oledb_prop N'OraOLEDB.Oracle', N'DynamicParameters', 1
    GO
    EXEC master.dbo.sp_addlinkedserver @server = N'Nav14', @srvproduct=N'Oracle', @provider=N'OraOLEDB.Oracle', @datasrc=N'TheOracleHostName'
    EXEC master.dbo.sp_addlinkedsrvlogin @rmtsrvname=N'TheOracleHostName',@useself=N'False',@locallogin=NULL,@rmtuser=N'TheUser',@rmtpassword='ThePassWord'
Msg 15015, Level 16, State 1, Procedure sp_addlinkedsrvlogin, Line 49     The server 'TheHostName' does not exist. Use sp_helpserver to show available servers.
Did the same process on a Windows 7 32 bit Enterprise - ODBC Works after installing ODAC
ODBC worked, shows list of Oracle servers - picked the server - ODBC successful - MS Access able to use that ODBC service.
In Windows 2008 64 bit installed both Oracle 11g Client and 64 bit ODAC - ODBC opens, the list of oracle servers doesn't populate, hard code in the host name - ODBC reports Success.
Another Person Suggested:  Win7 64-bit with Oracle 11g. Oddly enough, it ran differently when I opened a command prompt window as administrator and ran setup.exe with the suggested command-line options:
setup.exe -debug -printtime -printmemory -printdiskusage -logLevel finest
While it had previously been failed both by running setup from the Explorer windows as administrator and by running it from the command line as administrator - it died every time at the same point mentioned by others in this thread - just after this message appeared in the log:
    Get view named [SummaryUI]
( I have tried re installing with no success)

    Windows 7 Enterprise 32-Bit
Installed the version 12 for 32 bit ODAC and it worked. The key is to Install as Administrator once it is unzipped.
Was able to set up Listener then
Was able to set up ODBC using the ODAC. Connect MS Access 2010 to the Oracle views.
Then, tried to install the 64 Bit onto Windows 2008 Server.
It locked up during installation both times.
    Installed ODAC without an error.
However, the ODBC setup will not provide a list of the servers in the ODBC  TNS Service Name listbox for Server 2008.
In Windows 7, it populates the TNS Service Name.
The list box in Windows 2008 is empty.
Do you know what would cause that?
The .ORA file scrips look the same on Windows 2008 as they do on Windows 7 except it does not have the (server = Dedicated) argument.
    Thanks.

  • Essential event viewer bugs with "Forwarded Events" log in Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7

To my general experience, Windows event viewer is one of the most problematic, faulty management tools in the case of extensive use of its more sophisticated capabilities. The sole description as well as reproduction of some entangled failures would require
    remarkable effort.
With the "Forwarded Events" log however, the situation becomes particularly worse in that even simple functionality fails and workarounds are difficult to find. That’s what I’ll describe here in order to share my experience with interested users.
For precision: I’ve extensively used event viewer on a German Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 (Windows SBS 2011 Standard SP1). The bugs I found on that system, I could reproduce on a German Windows 7 Professional 64-Bit SP1, too.
Problem 1: Failure of even simple event filtering
To reproduce this problem, execute these steps on a test machine with any of the two OS mentioned above:
    (i) To prepare log contents, do either of the following:
    (a) populate some events to your local "Forwarded Events" log (most simply by subscribing events from other logs of the same machine; stop subscription if you have collected some events)
    Or
    (b) copy a non-empty log file "ForwardedEvents.evtx" from another machine (with any of the two OS mentioned above) to your test machine and open the file in event viewer.
(ii) Navigate to your "Forwarded Events" test log and open the filtering dialog. In the "Includes/Excludes Event IDs" field, type: 1-9000. Click OK.
(iii) Look at the results pane: Surprise, 0 Events! Do you really have no event IDs between 1 and 9000 in your test log?
(iv) Another example, if you have forwarded security events in your test log: Clear filter, if any previous filter is in place. Open the filtering dialog. In "Keywords" sub-dialog, choose "Audit Success". Click OK.
    (v) Look at the results pane: Surprise, 0 Events! Do you really have no successful security monitoring events in your test log?
I’ll finish here. If you have a rich variety of events in your test log available, let your imagination run wild to test around. Finally include some simple manually created or modified XPath filters on the XML tab of the filtering dialog. I promise, you’ll
find a lot of additional strange results.
Problem 2: Cannot save manually selected events to .evtx file
Navigate to your "Forwarded Events" test log. In the results pane, select one or more events by highlighting them by mouse clicks. In context menu, choose "Save selected events". In the "save as" dialog, choose file type *.evtx
and save your file. Open the newly created file in event viewer. Result: Surprise, no events inside the new file!
Have more fun with forwarded events
    Helmut

Did you mean that right click Forwarded Event and select "Filter Current Log..."? Since I can filter correct event vai the "Filter Current Log..." in my Lab environment.
    Hi Justin,
yes, I mean "Filter Current Log ... " (in my German systems: "Aktuelles Protokoll filtern ... ").
What do you mean with "my Lab environment" exactly?
In the meantime, I performed additional tests. I copied the "ForwardedEvents.evtx" test file from Server 2008 R2 resp. Windows 7 to
    (i) German Windows 8 Pro 64-Bit RTM
    (ii) German Windows 8.1 Pro 64-Bit, up-to-date
in order to view and filter the file there.
Results: Same event viewer problem on Windows 8 RTM, but correct behavior on Windows 8.1!
    Best regards, Helmut

  • Unable to upgrade SQL Server 2008 R2 to SQL Server 2012 SP1

I'm encountering error after error, after successfully installing the upgrade advisor (which took some doing) and running it with essentially no warnings/errors (the one warning was on the connection strings, as I recall -- and all of the warnings had a
    "fix after" status.
First failure involved SSRS and the inability to create the "managed account". Backed out the upgrade using http://sqldbanotes.blogspot.com/2013/10/how-to-fix-failed-in-place.html
Now the failure involves SSAS and unable to connect to analysis services with name MSSQLServerOLAPService.  That is the logical name for the service, although it shows up as just MSSQLServer when looking at it in the services list.  I tried
setting the service account to a local account as  well as to Local System -- did not make a difference, the upgrade couldn't apparently find it regardless.
Has anybody successfully done an in place upgrade from SQL Server 2008 R2 to SQL Server 2012?

  • How to restore SQL Server 2008 database to SQL Server Express 2012

How to restore SQL Server 2008 database to SQL Server Express 2012.
I BACKED UP a SQL Server 2008 database from work, which runs the enterprise version of 2008, and I tried to RESTORE it to my new 64-Bit home PC which is running the new SQL Server Express 2012 64-Bit (Advanced Edition).
But if fails. I get the following message text.
Can anyone help me please. I thought restoring a 2008 database to the later version 2012 would be possible.
Here is the error message. Thanks.
TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio
    Restore of database failed. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.RelationalEngineTasks)
    ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlError: The database was backed up on a server running version 8.00.2039. That version is incompatible with this server, which is running version 11.00.3128. Either restore the database on a server that supports the backup, or use a
backup that is compatible with this server. (Microsoft.SqlServer.SmoExtended)

    ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlError: The database was backed up on a server running version 8.00.2039. That version is incompatible with this server, which is running version 11.00.3128. Either restore the database on a server that supports the
backup, or use a backup that is compatible with this server. (Microsoft.SqlServer.SmoExtended)
Are you sure your database is SQL server 2008 from error message it seems your SQL server version is 2000.I guess you have multiple versions of SQL server.
AFAIK you cannot restore backup of SQL server 2000 to 2012 directly .Restore it first to SQL 2008/2008R2 or 2005 then take backup again of new database created and then you would be able to restore it on 2012.Its kind of intermediate way
Also make sure your DB size is less than 10 G as max DB size supported by Express edition is 10 G and if your DB size is more than 10 G restore will fail.
You are also trying to restore enterprise DB backup on express edition so you will loose enterprise features on express edition

  • I installed Crystal Reports server 2008, i'm geting server not started erro

    Hi,
I'm getting error with server not started or not available error (FWM 01003). If i check in CCM, i don't see any entry for CMS server entry. How to start CMS server??? Please advise me. i installed trail version of crystal reports server 2008.
    thanks in advance!!!
    Ben.

I am a consultant for Business Object products and experienced the same exact problem. We were installing Business Objects Edge, which is similar to Crystal Reports Server 2008, with MS SQL Server 2000 SP4 for the CMS System Database on a server that was named <Numbers>-<Letters>.
We discovered that some scripts that the installation and CMS run fail when the Server Name of the Business Objects Edge Server start with a number. When the CMS System Database is setup, a table called CMS_IdNumbers6 is created. It should have three columns, NameId, IdName and third column that is named after the server where you are installing Crystal Reports Server 2008, Business Objects Edge or Business Objects Enterprise. This column is called <ServerName>_iad_intensive_int_6400.
This column fails to get created when your server name starts with a number and subsequent scripts that insert records into this column fail. Renaming the server where we were installing Business Objects Edge to <Letters><Numbers> (no dashes either to be safe) solved the problem. We were successfully able to install Business Objects Edge. Please note: This is the server where you are installing Crystal Reports Server 2008 that needs to be renamed and NOT the MS SQL Server--just making a note because we had to go back and forth with our server team a couple of times on this point.
