SharePoint List Source - converting person/people

PART 1
I currently have an SSIS package that gathers a SP (task) list source into a SQL Server table.
The "assigned to" column (ie user) comes in as the SharePoint reference (ie 22;#Test User)....but I would like to store it as the user's login name (ie TUser).
I suppose I could do a bit of string manipulation to do this, but I think the truest way is to re-query SharePoint based on the ID to get the user's login name.  Or is it possible to do a list-join of some sort with the site collection's users list?
Does anyone have a pattern for this?
Part 2
To add to this, the "assigned to" column could also be a Sharepoint group (ie 12;#Test Group).  In my db destination, I would like to have a row for each user.  Probably related to the solution above.....can I get the individuals in the
group from SharePoint and then create a row item for each of the users in the groups?
Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the reply Brij.
I was hoping to do the majority of the work in the SSIS package, but I don't think you can run the SP specific code in VS 2008 for SSIS.....or caaaaan you?  If so, it'd have to run on the actual SP web server...right?
What I've been working on is a custom "RESTful" WCF built in VS 2010 and deployed onto Sharepoint.
I haven't completed this yet...but in theory the SSIS package will post a request to the service with the site, list name and item ids.  The service would interrogate the list, and bring back the user login names in JSON.  (using code similar to
what you've presented above).  And for the groups, it would list all the group members. Then the SSIS job would throw those users into the temp table before it commits it to the actual table.
Like I said.....I had hoped the SSIS job would be able to do all the processing instead of having to bump up the complexity.
I'll report back when I'm done.....hopefully with some lessons learned.

  • Is there a way to Insert Data into a Lookup Column Type on a SharePoint List Destination in SSIS?

    Greetings.
    I have successfully worked out inserting SQL data (2008 R2) into my 2010 SharePoint list (New, Update, Delete) by creating an SSIS Data Flow Task as outlined here:
    http://fsugeiger.blogspot.com/2010/01/synchronise-sql-table-with-sharepoint.html
    However, the problem I am running into is inserting data into the SharePoint Columns that are "Lookup" column types. I verified that all of the values I am copying from SQL into the SharePoint lookup column exist in the customn list it is pointing to. It
    is important to have this column be a lookup column as it links to another custom list that has many more columns of related information.
    I have read and re-read the SharePoint SSIS Adapters 2011.docx from
    http://sqlsrvintegrationsrv.codeplex.com/ and the only section that seems to apply is this:
    "Looking Up Values in a SharePoint List
    If you have to look up a value in a SharePoint list, you can use the Lookup transformation in your data flow, and use the SharePoint List source to load the lookup table. You may have to add a Derived Column transformation or a Script component that splits
    data in the lookup column on the ";#" delimiter to separate the ID value from the description.
    If you are replacing values in your data with the values that you look up in the list, then loading the changed data back into SharePoint, you only have to include the ID from the lookup column. SharePoint ignores the description if you include it."
    I am not sure if the above statement means that I should be passing the assocaited ID's other than the actual data into the SharePoint List destination. If that is the case, that will not really work as the lookup contains hundreds of rows. Not too mention
    I have several of these lookup column types pointing to several different lists.
    Any guidance in how I can put data into a SharePoint Lookup column type via Data Flow Task would be so much appreaciated.
    Thank you.
    My errors are:
    Error: 0x0 at Data Flow Task, SharePoint List Destination: Error on row ID="1": 0x1 - Unspecified error, such as too many items being updated at once (batch), or an invalid core field value.

    component returned an error from the ProcessInput method. The error is specific to the component, but the error is fatal and will

    I have found a solution to my problem and thought I would share it here in case there are others who are struggling with the above scenario. If you have a better way, I would love to hear about it since my way is a bit tedious.
    In a nutshell, in order to have an SSIS package put data from an OLE DB Source into a SharePoint List Destination Lookup Column, you need to pass the ID of the value that is being looked up, not the value that is in the “master” OLE DB source.
    Rough explanation, OLE DB Source value for column “Approp” is “4005” --> SQL matches “4005” with the ID in the new lookup table (“4005” = ID “5” as defined in the SharePoint lookup list) --> “5” gets passed into SharePoint List destination lookup
    column --> SharePoint displays “4005” and successfully links to the lookup list.
    Funny thing (not really), the error(s) outlined in my original post are not related in getting data into a SharePoint Lookup column as I am now successful in getting data into the system but I am still getting the same above error(s). I think it has to do
    with the ID column in the SharePoint list destination. What I can’t seem to figure out is why since I am not linking any data to that ID column (at least on new records). I am however linking it on Update and Delete and the errors mentioned above disappear
    and things work well.
    There are three tasks that need to get done in order to get data from SQL into a SharePoint lookup column assuming you have already set up your SharePoint lookup lists:
    1. Create new lookup table(s) in SQL that has the IDs from the SharePoint Lookup list and the values coming from the “master” OLD DB Source. You can see the ID column in SharePoint by toggling it on in a view.
    2. Create a SQL command that JOINs all the databases and tables so that the ID is passed and not the value into the SharePoint lookup column
    3. Change the “Data access mode” to “SQL Command” instead of the “Table or view” in the OLE DB Source and paste your command into the “SQL command text:” area.
    Other helpful info is that you may also need to add additional columns in the new lookup tables in SQL for the scenarios when the data is not unique. You can see this two times in my SQL command example for Units and JobTitles:
    SELECT
    pps.SSNm,
    pps.file_updated,
    pps.Employee_id,
    /* pps.CheckDistNm,*/
    Check_Distribution_id = COALESCE( d.ID, 0 ),
    pps.Job_nbr,
    pps.SeqNm,
    pps.action_eff_dt,
    Fund_id = COALESCE( f.id, 0 ),
    Appropriation_id = COALESCE( ap.id, 0 ),
    ActionCode_id = COALESCE( ac.id, 0 ),
    SpecNumber_id = COALESCE( jt.ID, 0 ),
    pps.Employee_id,
    /* pps.Fund,
    pps.Approp,
    pps.Unit,*/
    Unit_id = COALESCE( u.ID, 0 ),
    PosNm,
    PosCode,
    pps.LastName,
    pps.FirstName,
    pps.MI
    FROM
    x_PPS.aReportVw.pps_screens_active AS pps
    LEFT OUTER JOIN dbo.DistributionNumbers AS d ON
    pps.CheckDistNm = d.Check_Distribution
    LEFT OUTER JOIN dbo.Units AS u ON
    pps.Fund = u.Fund AND
    pps.Approp = u.Approp AND
    pps.Unit = u.Unit
    LEFT OUTER JOIN dbo.Appropriations AS ap ON
    pps.Approp = ap.Approp
    LEFT OUTER JOIN dbo.Funds AS f ON
    pps.Fund = f.Fund
    LEFT OUTER JOIN dbo.ActionCodes AS ac ON
    pps.ActionCode = ac.ActionCode
    LEFT OUTER JOIN dbo.JobTitles AS jt ON

    The reason was the  difference in List's names on web portal and the name of list itself.

  • SSIS Data Flow task using SharePoint List Adapter Setting SiteUrl won't work with an expression

    Hi,
    I'm trying to populate the SiteUrl from a variable that has been set based on a query to a SQL table that has a URL field.  Here are the steps I've taken and the result.
    Created a table with a url in it to reference a SharePoint Task List.
    Created a Execute SQL Task to grab the url putting the result set in a variable called SharePointUrl
    Created a For Each container and within the collection I use the SharePointUrl as the ADO object source variable and select rows in the first table.
    Still in the For Each container within the Variable mappings I have another Package Variable called PassSiteUrl2 and I set that to Index 0 or the value of the result set.
    I created a script task to then display the PassSiteUrl2 variable and it works great I see my url
    This is where it starts to suck eggs!!!!
    I insert a Data Flow Task into my foreach loop.
    I Insert a SharePoint List Adapter into my Data Flow
    Within my SharePoint List Adapter I set my list to be "Tasks", My list view to be "All Tasks" and then I set the url to be another SharePoint site that has a task list just so there is some default value to start with.
    Now within my Data Flow I create an expression and set the [SharePoint List Source].[SiteUrl] equal to my variable @[User::PassSiteUrl2].
    I save everything and run my SSIS package and it overlays the default [SharePoint List Source].[SiteUrl] with blanks in the SharePoint List Adapter then throws the error that its missing a url
    So here is my question.  Why if my package variable displays fine in my Control Flow is it now not seen or seen as blanks in the Data Flow Expression.  Anyone have any ideas???
    Thanks
    Donald R. Landry

    Thanks Arthur,
    The scope of the variable is at a package level and when I check to see if it can be moved Package level is the highest level.  The evaluateasexpression property is set to True.  Any other ideas?
    I also tried to do the following.  Take the variable that has the URL in it and just assign it to the description of the data flow task to see if it would show up there (the idea being the value of my @[User::PassSiteUrl] should just show in the
    description field when the package is run. That also shows up blank.
    So i'm thinking its my expression.  All I do in the expression is set [SharePoint List Source].[SiteUrl] equal to @[User::PassSiteUrl] by dragging and dropping the variable into the expression box.  Maybe the expression should be something
    else or is their a way to say  @[User::PassSiteUrl] = Dts.Variables("User::PassSiteUrl2").Value.ToString()
    In my script task I use Dts.Variables("User::PassSiteUrl2").Value.ToString() to display
    the value in the message box and that works fine.

    If you are using Claims Auth then this is a known limitation.  Auto refresh only works under Classic Auth.

    Hello,
    I have an Excel spreadsheet that I get daily and cut and paste into an existing SharePoint list. Is there a way to make that Excel spreadsheet a data source and copy the data to an existing SharePoint list with less manual involvement?

  • SSDT - Using a SharePoint list data feed as source - "column does not exist in the rowset" error

    Hey guys!
    So, I want to use a SharePoint list data to create a cube/tabular model, in order to make a complex analysis in PPS using MDX.
    To create the tabular model, I'm using the SS Data Tools, and importing a feed from the respective SharePoint list (using the _vti_bin/listdata.svcextension and then selecting the list(s) I wanna to import).
    Everything looks fine and smooth, I can select and preview the data in the table import wizard, but in the end, when importing, I always get this error IF the table has one or more row of data (if the table is empty, it's ok...) - the <...>
    column doesn't exist in the rowset.
    (Curiously, when I have the same procedure in PowerPivot for Excel, I have no problems, everything works fine. The problem is that then I get again errors if I try to create a tabular model on SSDT importing a PowerPivot file).
    Here's the error:
    Had you already tried this in SSDT? Are you experiencing the same trouble?
    Best regards, and thanks in advance!

    I noticed something else too.
    I can't process Tabular Models on both SSDT and SSMS (2012), but I can process Tabular Models created on PowerPivot.
    I tried to create a Data Feed connection on PowerPivot, and it was successfully created. However, if restoring the PowerPivot Tabular DB on my SSAS Tabular instance and processing (full) the model through SSMS, it won't work.
    Is there anything different on PowerPivot and SSDT related with Partitioning or connections to the data sources?

    I have heard about the power view/power pivot which does this kind of animations in reports.
    Can someone please guide me on creating reports which shows animations
    In power view/power pivot using SharePoint List as data source in SharePoint 2010.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi MercuryMan,
    Yes, Power View, a feature of SQL Server 2012 Reporting Services Add-in for Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 or SharePoint 2013 Enterprise Edition, is an interactive data exploration, visualization, and presentation experience.
    It provides multiple views featuring tiles, slicers, a chart filter, and a number of visualizations, including cards, small multiples, and a bubble chart. So, we can use Power View to do intuitive ad-hoc reporting for business users such as data analysts, business
    decision makers, and information workers.
    Currently, Power View report only supports two types of data models: PowerPivot Worksheet, and data models based on Analysis Services Tabular Model or Multidimensional Cube.
    In your scenario, you can create PowerPivot worksheets using SharePoint List as data source, deploy the PowerPivot worksheet to a SharePoint Library or PowerPivot Gallery, and then generate Power View reports based on the PowerPivot worksheets on the SharePoint
    site.
    To use SharePoint List as data source in Excel PowerPivot, you can refer to the following resource:

  • PerformancePoint - 2010 Scorecard filter based on two data sources (Actual - OLAP/Target - Sharepoint List)

    Hi
    I have KPI's for tasks performed by specific groups within our organization, the actuals are determined by an MDX tuple formula against an AS OLAP data source:
    ([Change Task Assignment Group].[Group Subtype].&[GDC PM], [Measures].[Average task duration - m]) /1440
    The Task Name is provided by a filter, also looking at the AS OLAP data source.
    This woks well and allows us to have a single scorecard for the team, providing actuals depending on the task selected from the filter.  The problem comes in setting targets for the KPI's!  I can only set one target for each KPI and this is
    the same for which ever task is selected via the filter.  The target is stored in a SharePoint list.
    Is it possible to have targets for the different tasks driven by the same filter?  Can a single filter be configured to return values from two data sources to both the Actual KPI value and the Target value?
    Thanks

    A good solution. Liked it very much. Can you please make it a technet blog for others.

  • How to select column dynamically with sharepoint list as data source in ssrs report

    Hi all,
    I am creating reports from SharePoint list but i have requirements to select the column name dynamically with SharePoint list as data source. I didn't find any way of doing this..
    Can anyone help me to resolve this issue..
    There is no way of specifying column name dynamically here in data set query
    <RSSharePointList xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema">
      <ListName>test list</ListName>
      <ViewFields>
        <FieldRef Name="ID" />
        <FieldRef Name="ContentType" />
        <FieldRef Name="Title" />
        <FieldRef Name="Modified" />
        <FieldRef Name="Created" />
        <FieldRef Name="Author" />
        <FieldRef Name="Editor" />
        <FieldRef Name="_UIVersionString" />
        <FieldRef Name="Attachments" />
        <FieldRef Name="Edit" />
        <FieldRef Name="LinkTitleNoMenu" />
        <FieldRef Name="LinkTitle" />
        <FieldRef Name="DocIcon" />
        <FieldRef Name="ItemChildCount" />
        <FieldRef Name="FolderChildCount" />
        <FieldRef Name="test_x0020_date" />
        <FieldRef Name="title2" />
      </ViewFields>
    </RSSharePointList>

    Hi MNRSPDev,
    Sorry for the delay.
    According to the current description, I understand that you want to specify column name in dataset query designer dynamically when using SharePoint list data source.
    Based on my research, this is not supported by default. As a workaround, you can use XML data source. The XML content can be embedded directly within the query. This lets you use the expression capabilities within the processing engine to build queries and
    data dynamically within the report. And it can be used for retrieving XML data directly from an external data source, passing it using parameters, and embedding it within the query.

    Hope this helps.

    but it is not working
    please help me

    Hi,
    According to your post, my understanding is that you wanted to set "peoples or groups" field with current user "login name" in SharePoint list form using JavaScript.
    To set "peoples or groups" field with current user "login name”,  you can use the below code:
    <script src="http://ajax.aspnetcdn.com/ajax/jquery/jquery-1.9.0.js"></script>
    <script type="text/javascript">
    function SetPickerValue(pickerid, key, dispval) {
    var xml = '<Entities Append="False" Error="" Separator=";" MaxHeight="3">';
    xml = xml + PreparePickerEntityXml(key, dispval);
    xml = xml + '</Entities>';
    EntityEditorCallback(xml, pickerid, true);
    function PreparePickerEntityXml(key, dispval) {
    return '<Entity Key="' + key + '" DisplayText="' + dispval + '" IsResolved="True" Description="' + key + '"><MultipleMatches /></Entity>';
    function GetCurrentUserAndInsertIntoUserField() {
    var context = new SP.ClientContext.get_current();
    var web = context.get_web();
    this._currentUser = web.get_currentUser();
    context.load(this._currentUser);
    context.executeQueryAsync(Function.createDelegate(this, this.onSuccess),
    Function.createDelegate(this, this.onFailure));
    function onSuccess(sender, args) {
    SetPickerValue('ctl00_m_g_99f3303a_dffa_4436_8bfa_3511d9ffddc0_ctl00_ctl05_ctl01_ctl00_ctl00_ctl04_ctl00_ctl00_UserField', this._currentUser.get_loginName(),
    this._currentUser.get_title());
    function onFaiure(sender, args) {
    alert(args.get_message() + ' ' + args.get_stackTrace());
    ExecuteOrDelayUntilScriptLoaded(GetCurrentUserAndInsertIntoUserField, "sp.js");
    </script>

  • How to add users from person or group field in a sharepoint list to sharepoint group

    Hi,
    How to add users(single or multiple) from person or group field in a sharepoint list to sharepoint group programmatically?
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thank you,
    AA.

    Hello,
    Use SPGroup.AddUser() method to add user in group. I have just written sample code in notepad so it is not tested:
    SPSecurity.RunWithElevatedPrivileges(delegate()
    using(SPSite Site = new SPSite(SPContext.Current.Site.Url))
    Using(SPWeb Web = Site.OpenWeb())
    SPList list = web.Lists["ListName"];
    SPQuery query=new SPQuery ();
    query.Query = "<Where><Eq><FieldRef Name='Title' /><Value Type='Text'>Test</Value></Eq></Where>";
    SPListItemCollection items = list.GetItems(query);
    if(items.Count > 0)
    foreach(SPListItem item in items)
    //Get USers from person or group column
    SPFieldUser userField = (SPFieldUser)item.Fields.GetField("Users");
    SPFieldUserValueCollection userFieldValueCollection = (SPFieldUserValueCollection)userField.GetFieldValue(item["Users"].ToString());
    SPGroup spGroup = spSite.RootWeb.Groups[groupName];//group name
    if (users.Count != 0)
    bool isUserInGroup = false;
    foreach (SPFieldUserValue user in users)
    foreach (SPUser item in spGroup.Users)
    string itemUserName = item.LoginName;
    string UserName = user.User.LoginName;
    if (itemUserName == UserName)
    isUserInGroup = true;
    break;
    if (!isUserInGroup)
    spGroup.AddUser(user.User);
    The above code will query list item and then get users from "Users" column. Now it will check whetehr user is already in group not, if not then add user in group.
