Sharing desktop with Leopard

Hi there everybody.
Not sure if this is the right place to post my question so my apologies if it has been done already somewhere else.
Question is simple:
is it possible to share a Tiger desktop remotely from Leopard OSX?
Leopard to Leopard desktop sharing works just great with the built in ARD features however, in the Leopard finder "server" section, also my shared Tiger machines appear to be available.
Unfortunately, if I try to access remotely one of this desktops, the "contacting" window pops up but stays on forever without actually creating the connection.
I have enabled everything on the server-side (Tiger computer) such as ARD, file sharing, remote login, visitor access...
Is there anything I am still missing here or sharing desktop Leopard to Tiger is simply not possible without suitable Client s/w running on the Leopard side?
/P

If you're referring to the screen sharing built into Leopard, I'd suggest you ask in the Networking Leopard forum (or perhaps the Using Leopard forum). You'll be more likely to get an answer there, since (at least in theory) everyone posting here is using or asking about the Apple Remote Desktop application.
Regards.

  • File sharing issue with Leopard and Windows XP

I had no problem with file sharing (see the Windows machine on Leopard) before I reinstall the XP and update to SP3.
Now I cannot get the XP shared disk displayed on Leopard Finder. I looked through some guides and check these:
    Both the two laptops are in the same workgroup called "WORKGROUP";
    XP firewall disabled;
    XP Guest Account enabled.
But I just cannot get the Windows icon back to the left column of my Finder. Have I missed something? Any body with any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Same problem but almost the reverse. 10.5.2 server, windows clients file browsing, opening and saving speed is great, but our 4 iMac clients (Leopard also) really, really slow to generate thumbnail views of files and open them. Happens across several shares, seems to be a problem with AFP, although now after disabling AFP on some of the shares, it is happening on SMB as well. I have read several other discussions on this forum that attempt to deal with AFP performance issues, but none provide a real solution. Now that it is also happening with the SMB protocol as well I am getting a bit concerned.
Any advice or even a link to more info would be greatly appreciated.

  • Windows file sharing issues with Leopard

One of my clients has a Mac Mini server running Leopard with all updates installed. He has 2 Windows PCs in his office (1 XP and 1 Vista) and 1 MacBook Air running Leopard.
I created two folders in /Users/Shared and created a new full (standard) user account (SMB doesn't seem to like "share only" accounts). I turned off the OS X Firewall and set the two folders to be read/write shares for the new account I created. I turned on SMB sharing in Options.
On the Windows XP machine, I can read/write to the Mac Mini's shared folders just fine, however I cannot delete files for some reason. I always get an error saying the file is locked or I don't have permission to erase it. I tried moving the share folder to different locations, thinking it was a parent folder permission issue. No dice. It doesn't seem to matter who creates the file, I cannot delete it from the Windows computer. I can delete it fine from any Mac in the office.
    Any ideas?

The default behavior for the /Users/Shared folder is that you can only delete files you put in the Shared folder - this is called the "sticky bit." ie: User A saves/moves a file into Shared, User B can read/write that file but cannot delete it, User A can read/write and delete. The sticky bit can be set via Terminal.

  • File Sharing Speed with Leopard Server/ Windows XP

Went from Panther Server to Leopard Server. Panther worked fine. Leopard Server we've had a lot of problems with Windows XP clients. We run data files from the server. Using Panther the file sharing speed was comparable to putting the data file on the PC itself. When we moved to Leopard the speed went through the floor. 8 seconds on the PC and 4.5 minutes on the Server. The server is a substantially stronger machine with a lot more resources - but we've had to stop using it for it's intended purpose.
    Help?

  • Originating File Sharing Mini with Leopard G3 Beige and Vice Verse.

I guess a sub-heading of this would be connecting to the newest Mac from an older one.
Here is a problem: I can set up the G3 Beige (running Jaguar) as a file sharing server and very easily connect to it from the a Mac Mini by using top menu Go>Connect to server.
Where i run into what seems to be impossible is to do the same thing from the G3. Nothing seems to establish a connection. It is always rejected with a no connection error message.
Both machines are wirelessly connecting through a router. The mini with internal airport and the G3 beige using an external D-link bridge. Both work fine accessing the internet.
Main reason i wanted to do this is that my Shared Printer is on the Mini and i wanted to print something from the Beige to it.
Can anybody help, or am i attempting the impossible.

DEAR Grant Bennet-Adler: Thank you for your last reply. I'm not sure exactly what i did but I was able to connect. To answer your questions:
IP Addresses are similar. One is ...101 and the other is ...102.
    My router uses DHCP.
What seemed to fix the problem was going to security>firewall on the MINI and checking
    o Allow all incoming messages.
Not sure what ODS Agent.app is but it is highlighted as allow incoming vs blocked.
Both computers "allow personal file sharing"
On the G3 i was able to connect after a bit of trial and error: On the G3, when i "Connect to Server" i am presented with three choices of servers, one of which is the G3 itself--I wish the system wouldn't remember irrelevance.
One of the choices is OK and when i checkit i get the ID and Password Dialog--again for ID i am presented with the MINI's name and not my user (Admin) name.
Change that, type in the password and i am given a list of drives on the folder. That includes any opened from a .img.
After i open one i then see it on my desktop and can get into it.
One slight problem: Once into one, i can;t go back to "go to server" to open more. I get timeouts, error messages and other stuff. I have to start over. That also appears to be to include disconnecting the connection to the G3 server that gets set up on the MINI.
    Regards:
p.s I hven't gotten into Shared Printer although i saw it did show up in the Firewall dialog.I think i have the Canon MP470 Software on the G3 as well as the Mini but i will have to check on it.
p.p.s. Next thing is to try X PostFacto on the G3 again to try to install a later OS; but this time not making the mistakes that totally messed it up the last time, last year, that i tried it.

I'm having a very similar sharing problem. Did you ever get it resolved?

  • Sharing Desktop with an iBook

hi, I want to know if it is possible for a person to see what I am doing on my computer as if they were right besides me. Windows has this application, they can even ask permision to control your computer, and you can do it either by windows istelf or by mesenger.

I installed Share My Desktop (an interface to the VNC server) on my in-law's iMac.
I then use Chicken of the VNC (a VNC client) to access and control my in-law's iMac.
This makes remote troubleshooting extremely easy.

  • Solution To Network problems with Leopard systems and tiger and vista

After lots of research and looking into sharing data with leopard systems and other os, i finally found a Solution. Before i state what you have to do to fix it here is what the problem is.
Mac Os x( Leopard) systems trying to find computers or share data to other systems on the same lan can't find each other or simply if are found cant share data with each other.
    Reason for the problem.
    - By default tiger , windows and some linux distro's automatically join WORKGROUP under workgroup in WINS. with leopard this is changed to join local under workgroup. This effectively causes the systems to fail to communicate with each other.
    - By default shared folders on leopard has smb not checked by default.
    Solutions
-in order to see computers on the same network or workgroup. find out the workgroup with which all the local machines are connected to, then on your leopard system goto Apple->System Preferences->network ->advance and head over to WINS tab from here either select your workgroup or type in your workgroup. hit ok then apply in the network window. ( restart your mac at this point int time and try browsing the computers in your network)
    - to make sure you can share folders with windwos machines goto apple->system preference ->Sharing. Make sure file sharing is selected then choose the folder you want to share or add a folder you want to share. next click on options and enable Share files and folders using SMB enter your password if it asks and then hit done.
hopefully this helps people with problems on their mac's. other wise you have three options if this is too much trouble install vmware fusion/parallels on your machine and install windows / install windows using bootcamp / and last get a windows machine ( although this choice is highly unlikely it's still a choice). Please note this is not a windows vs mac subject is just that apple has changed the network stack protocols and architecture so stuff is being done differently , you just got to think different to get stuff to work. but after it's all said and done all your system should work in harmony now.

Thank you all for replying. I upgraded to Tiger from Panther the first week and it worked AWESOME! I do have to say that I truly and beginning to feel like I'm having issues I would experience on a windows machine. I know that Apple will fix but it is frustrating that I'm having the issues that I'm having.
I just need to finish up the project I'm working on and then I'm going back. I'm currently without any admin rights on my computer but I'm working away. I actually don't know what to expect next so I'm just backing up my data from time to time and working hard to get this done and get back to Tiger (that will be a long process so don't want to get started).
Again thank you all! Also I want to call Apple about this but don't want to wait on hold for the tech. AND they are only open during business hours. Guess what, I work during business hours. What's up with that? Adobe is available all the time.

  • I can't see shared printers from a Mac with Leopard

Hi there we got a new MacPro that came with Leopard but when I want to add the printers shared by two old Macs it can't see them, it only find and HP Color LaserJet 2600n that was shared on a Mac Book. The other Macs has OSX 10.3.9 (a G5) and 10.3 (a G4), one share a HP LaserJet 1200 and the other an Epson Inkjet Printer. We also have a MacPro (a core 2 duo) with OSX 10.4 that can find all the printers.
I was wondering if the version of the old Macs has something to do with my problem, maybe the Leopard can't reach them or something like that.
    Thanks
    PERCY

Have a look at this article from Apple
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306984
It covers the issues with Leopard seeing printers shared by 10.3.

  • Printer Sharing with Leopard

    Hi,
I just got a new iMac 24" with Leopard, and I'm really excited about it, but Printer Sharing is having a major problem! I don't know if this is a problem with the printer or the computer, but it is really getting on my nerves. For example, I am printing through my family's Windows computers fine, as well as my iBook 24", but after the first document prints, an error message shows up and says "Printer offline", but when I look at the printer it says, "Ready." I have figured out that if I press "Pause" and then "Resume" again, it will connect. But before I do that, it just sits there and does nothing. With my iBook, I can share my Epson printer just fine...It works perfectly! So do I need to change the settings on my printer or computer? I have a HP LaserJet 4000 Series printer, and so it's pretty old, but it works great, and I'd love to get another year or two out of it. Is there a script or something that I can do to fix this? I have tried Automator, it doesn't even work when I press "Watch what I do" or whatever. Thanks for your help!

your doing better than I am - we are still trying to connect to a printer on a windows (XP) machine- via a wireless connection. DO you remember how you did this?
We already went to the windoes machine and set the printer to share. When I try to add it to the macbook, it shows me the computer- but not the printer.
    Puzzled in Ky.

  • Web Sharing with Leopard 10.5.2 and Airport Extreme Base Station HELP!!!

Ok...I want to set up web sharing on my computer but so far my attempts have failed.
I have an intel iMac with Leopard 10.5.2 installed and I have the latest Airport extreme base station (With draft n).
I turn on web sharing, and of course it works locally but not when trying to be accessed over the internet.
Now I realize that by default my routers address wont let anyone connect to my computer over the internet.
My router has an ip of 10.0.1.1, and I assigned my computer a static ip address of 10.0.1.200.
Now in the network preferences pane and the airport category, i set my computers IP (the 10.0.1.200), I put the gateway as 255.255.255.0, the router as 10.0.1.1 and the DNS as 10.0.1.1
Now going over to the airport utility I added a new entry in the port mapping section, with port 80 (both public and private) and the IP of my machine, 10.0.1.200.
Now in theory this should work but NOOOOO.
Does anyone have the same setup? a wireless network with the new airport extreme base station and has successfully configured Web Sharing?
    Thanks in advance.
    Felipe

    Well here is an update.
I saw an entry in apple support that said I had to change some setting in the apache folder /etc/apache2 in order to avoid getting the 403 forbidden error. I tried this and it did not work, i checked my user configuration file as well and the path to my home site directory was correct
Anyone here have a similar setup and has it working? It shouldnt be too hard to set up web sharing through a router. It has to be possible or else a lot of people would not buy a router because of this.
thanks in advance to anyone kind enough to help
    Bye.

  • Etended Desktop Stopped Working With Leopard..

With regards to an iMac 1.8 GHz PowerPC G5 with 1GB DDR SDRAM, I upgraded to Leopard (vs 10.5.2). At first, the computer would not boot up and all I got was a blue screen. I've worked through that mess, but now I have lost the option for extended desktop. When I go to System Preferences > Displays > Display Preferences, there is no arrangement tab. When I go through the help screens, I get a message that says there is no arrangement tab as the computer is not capable of doing this.
Before I upgraded to Leopard, I had no problem using extended desktop with dual monitors. Now all I get is mirrored desktop on both screens.
My question is, is it possible that there is not enough RAM to support the extended desktop and that is why it is not showing up as an option? With Leopard running and nothing else, there is less than 200 Mb of RAM left for everything else. My computer has 1 GB of RAM.

That fixed it. I did not know that my extended desktop was being provided by Screen Spanning Doctor. Once I found it on my computer and enabled it, I was able to use the arrangement tab in display preferences and everything is back to normal.
    Thank you!
BTW, for anyone wondering, Screen Spanning Doctor works flawlessly with Leopard!

  • Remote Desktop and Leopard

Hello, I am wondering if I have to upgrade Remote Desktop software to a version higher that 2.2 if I switch from Tiger to Leopard; or can I stay with Remote Desktop 2.2?

We have now got the situation that we can control the server over the VPN using screen sharing from another Leopard Mac but still can't control in the other direction.

  • How do I share desktop with Lion user?

So prior to installing Mountain Lion, I provided tech support to my mom by sharing her desktop via iChat. Now though, I can't figure out how to share her desktop. I'm using Mountain Lion, she still has Lion. So she doesn't have Messages and I don't have iChat. I can't even send her a text message, because Messages says she's not registered with iMessage. All the documentation I can find about sharing desktops on Mountain Lion says that you can share desktops with someone else on your same network, but I can't find anything about sharing desktops over the internet like we used to do with iChat. If I can avoid walking her through installing a VNC client, I would really like that.

    Hi Wade,
You seem to be describing an @me.com name that you used for iChat and was a MobileMe and now is an iCloud name.
This "Account" should be active in Mail, Contacts and Calendars for Messages
    Uploaded with Skitch!
As far as the AIm Servers are concerned the @mac.com name and the @me.con iCloud Name  are in fact separate AIM Screen Names.
If your Buddies are in the @mac.com Buddy List they will not appear in the @me.com name you have linked it to at Apple.
That is to say If I had an @mac.com and an @Me.com name  AIM would see them as separate Screen Names.
    One stage further:-
    ralphjohnsr (AIM registered name)
    [email protected]
    [email protected]
    are three separate AIM "Accounts"
(They are also three separate Buddies if you were adding them to Your Buddy list - although only one of them is real)
You said your mother does not have Messages.
Only Messages can send iMessages  (The Apple iD you have set up for this may or may not be an iCloud ID)
    iChat cannot accept iMessages.
If she has iOS 5.x.x on her iPhone (depending on the level of technology you have managed to get her to embrace) then you could send her iMessages that way.
    SO...
Your Message > Preferences > Accounts  should list the iMessages "Account" and those iChat ones you had
    Uploaded with Skitch!
An iCloud name that is the iMessages Account name may also need to be added as an "AIM" iChat type Account.
If the Jabber ID is only used at work and is not going to be used then you can untick the Messages item next to it in System Preferences > Mail, Contacts and Calendars or Untick the "Enable this Account" in Messages > Preferences > Accounts.
