'Sharing' Files Between Apps?

This may be a fools' errand.
Since the days of Palm Pilots, I've been using Docs to Go pretty heavily.
I sync most of my files through my Desktop, not the cloud.
Now, I'm attempting to trial-run some good PDF annotation apps. I have a bunch of PDFs that I've synced between my Desktop and my iPad with Docs to Go.
Is there any way I can open that same file using, say, GoodReader? Or do I need to push a copy of the same PDF into GoodReader with iTunes? (And then of course, I'll lose version control between the two apps...?)
Or... what other options do I have?

If DocumentsToGo shows your other Apps in the Open in.... menu, you won't need to push another copy. However, you're never really going to be able to share documents the way you want. You'll essentially have two copies.
By the way, I find, unless the documents are quite large or you have lots of them, emailing them to yourself is easier than iTunes. I believe you can email from Documents to Go.
I've forgotten if Documents to Go supports DropBox. If it does, you could store the apps their and open from GoodReader.

Sharing files between users and macs

My husband and I share an iMac. I have a MBA for traveling and my husband a PC laptop (though he rarely uses for private stuff). We both have iPhones.
We are looking for a way to:
- Share our photos (we don't use iPhoto) and some files. We would like to have this in one shared folder, that we can access from both accounts in the iMac, the MBA and ideally (though not a must) the PC and iPhones. We would both need to have admin rights to edit documents, etc.
- Have access to all the information in my account on the iMac from the MBA. Ideally, same thing for his and the PC.
- Have access to all the data remotely when traveling.
- Have all the data backed up locally (we already have a cloud backup, but we'd like to have a local backup too as it's easier and quicker to access)
We have read a lot about configuration, NAS, time capsule... but we get more and more confused, as we are obviously no tech experts.
Dropbox is not our preferred choice. We already have a cloud backup system. We'd rather have the files stored and accessed locally for everyday use.
Using a NAS to store shared folders and backup the rest sounds good, but they either seem very complicated to set up, or they have mixed reviews in terms of stability, especially to access files remotely.
Timecapsule seems easier and more straightforward, but I'm not sure it would solve the "sharing files between users and macs with admin rights"? It seems to be more focused on backing up the main drive and then providing access to the backed up files. (Though I might be completely mistaken!)
We just can't manage to have one shared folder between both accounts in the iMac. We need to grant admin rights document by document. We don't manage to make it work automatically so we both have one folder to access with full rights for all the contents inside it. And this seems to me like something that should easily be done...?
Any help, advice, proposals... would be greatly appreciated!!!

Move any file you want to the other user to access to the Shared Folder. Anything you put in that folder is available to all users.

You can control sharing of a user's itune library in the sharing preference. It is good for users on the same computer and the same local network (usually your house of small office).
As for files on another users folder, they have to either change the permissions of the parent folder (get info) or put the file to be shared into the public folder.

Is it possible in an app to read a file of another app? ( like reading a game save file of a free app installed on the Iphone to use it in the paid version ).

Not really, since every application runs in its own sandbox environment. You can of course you a web server (Amazon S3 etc) as the shared space between the applications. That of course means the user needs to be connected to the web to share the files.

Sharing video between Apps

Hi there. I have a home video edited in iMovie on my Mac and transferred to the Apple Video App on my iPad (iOS7). I would like to share this video with another app, "Write-on Video". This latter app will only import material from the iPad camera, the Evernote app (which also doesn't have an option to import video in its controls), and the internet. Apparently, it is nonetheless possible to save video into the Evernote app through the "share" option on apps, only the Apple Videos app doesn't seem to have a "share" option. Does anyone have an idea about how I might get my video into the Write-on Video app?
NB I really don't like the way each app is its own little island and how transferring material between them can't just be drag-and-drop (as long as the file types match) and has to involve various complicated juggling acts.

Unfortunately, this approach is exactly what I have a problem with. I seems counterintuitive. A specialized app needs to be made and then bought, for each simple thing like this. I already paid for the overpriced Pages. And now I have to pay for documentstogo and hope that it does what I want? I'm trying out An app at the moment called plaintext to see if this will do it for free...
BUT, my original point still stands. I was hoping to generate a little discussion on what I see as a limitation of IOS. Something that seems so simple is such an issue. I sortof see why apple has chosen to keep us away from the file system. But I think the cost is too high. Apple, give us a 'personal' chunk of the file system that we/apps can have SHARED access to. Then maybe IOS devices really can be more than just a toy.
Another example: last night, on my android phone, I downloaded an mp3 from my browser, then opened the file manager app, moved it to the media folder, and then set it as my ringtone. No need for a PC, ever. I fail to see how anything remotely close to this level of convenience is possible on an apple Device.

Can't drag folders or files between apps using mission control

I've been using Lion without any incident so far, but now that I've downloaded the lastest update (10.7.2) I can't drag a file or folder using mouse click (or my wacom tablet) between apps or folders - gestures simply will not work.
Once I click on a file, the multi-touchpad stop responding - if this is for real, Mac just lost it's allure... the nimble feature of exposé and/or mission control was this sole ability to navigate through apps and draggin files.
What's the status, anyone got this issue already?

I've been encountering the exact same problem! that was my favourite multi-touch gesture of all, which improved the productivity greatly. The only workaround for me is to assign hot-corners to mission control and drag files i want to the corners, but I really hope there's an explanation for this because i would really like that feature to be back

You wish to be able to send and receive files between two smartphones, through Wi-Fi.
You can do that using directly "Wi-Fi Direct". It is a protocol that allows exactly that, without requiring a Wi-Fi HotSpot, and it works for any smartphone that has that feature. For example, your Q5 can use Wi-Fi Direct to exchange files with a Samsung Galaxy SIII.

I will just add that if the other phone is a Samsung phone, the user may require to setup their device do use the real "Wi-Fi Direct" as opposed to Samsung's SBeam that works only between two Samsung phones. There should be an explicit option on the Samsung phone.

Sharing files between a Mac and PC

I have 2 Mac's and 2 PC's and they are all on a network via Airport Express and all connect to the Internet just fine. What I'd like to do is share files to and from all the computers on my network. I can see the Mac's just fine and copy files between them as well, however I cannot "mount" the PC's. When I go into network I see library, Mshome,My Network,Servers,Workgroup. In Ms Home I see one of the pc's and in Network and workgroup I see the other PC. When I click connect on either of the pc's regardless of which folder they are in i get the spinning lollipop and then a message that the alias needs to be fixed or deleted. Can anyone help me? I've turned on Windows sharing on my Mac and I've turned on sharing on the folders on my PC that I would like to have access to. What am I missing? I should mention that I know nothing about PC's. Thanks ahead of time for any and all help!

Advice on sharing files between two Macs please?

I have two G4s, one running 10.3.9 and one running 10.4. They are both connected to an ethernet router for internet. I would like to share files between these two computers as well as share a printer connected to the G4 running Panther.
After reading the Apple docs, I'm a bit confused, so I've posted here for clarification if possible.
From what I understand I can simply "turn on file sharing" on both and then grab and move files to the "Public" folder only of each G4?
I can also simply "turn on printer sharing" and share my printer with the Tiger G4?
In either case, will the G4s mount on each other's desktops?

It should just work. Be aware that shaing over ethernet is all about IP adresses. Normally you wouldn't think about this, but your router will probably assign these to the two macs automatically. In theory.
A good thing to know is, if you are on Mac A, with Sharing set up as ON on the other Mac (B), you can log in AS THE USER on Mac B, thereby gaining total access to that machine - not just the shared folder. However, if you log on as a "guest" you will only get into the shared folder.
The thing to remember is, go to preferences in the Finder (nont System Prefs) and click the Sidebar tab at the top. Make sure that Connected Servers and Netwrk are ticked to appear in the sidebar.
Any window you open in the FInder will now have a Network icon on the left. Touch this, and the other Mac shold appear (after a delay) like a disk. Click it, and then you can click through to log into it.
You can set up network disks to automount at startup too.

Sharing file between moutain lion and lion

To share files other MACs running Mt. Lion, you simply turn on AirDrop. Without an internet or intranet, can you, and how do you share files between MACs running Mt. Lion and Lion? How do you share files between Mt. Lion and any other older versions of OS X?

Here is a real-life example. My principal home machine is a 2011 Mac mini running OS X 10.8.3. My work laptop is a 2010 MacBook Pro with Lion. On the laptop, I enable File Sharing (afp) and export a project folder from the MacBook Pro and mount it on the desktop of the Mac mini.
Now, I can be more productive across two large monitors with the same applications and data; without concern for synchronizing final content. In my case, the work files remain on the laptop. Moving files between machines is a simple Finder operation.
WIthout a network, you can create your own with a length of CAT5(E) or better cable connecting each Mac Ethernet port. No need for a router in this (temporary) case. The alternative to this is a USB stick or where both machines have a reader, an SDHC data card.

How do I share files between my imac and my 2nd generation MacBook Air?
I have my imac that holds alot of files that I want to transfer over to my MacBook Air. How do I do this at home through a wireless network. I enabled file sharing on my Imac and MBA. This did not work. Any Help would be greatly appreciated!

I've used Apple's file sharing for years but two programs have made my life tons easier. One is the freeware DropCopy - install it on both computers and you'll see a black dot on your desktop. Drag a file onto the dot and it is copied to the other computer. If you have more than 2 computers you can easily select which computer gets the file.
The second is the freeware program DropBox. Like DropCopy you need to install the program on both computer. Unlike DropCopy, DropBox watches a folder on your computer called DropBox and any file put into it gets synced to the cloud and from there copied to the other computer. One of the great things about DropCopy is that you can also access your files via the Internet.

Sharing files between mac and PC's

I have an iMac running 10.4.8 and 2 PC's running XP home edition. I am trying to share files between them. They are networked through a router. The mac can see and connect to both of the PC's and I can open files on the PC's from the mac. The PC's can connect to each other and open files. The problem I'm having is connecting to the mac from either of the PC's. They all have the same workgroup name. I have windows file sharing on. Is there something else that needs to be done so the PC's can see and connect to the mac?

To set up a link between Windows XP and the Mac do the following:
1) Open "My Network Places" on the Windows computer.
2) Double click on "Add a network place".
3) A setup wizard will appear. Click next and choose the option to specify a network site, etc. Click Next.
4) Open the System Preferences on your Mac. Choose Sharing. Under the Services tab, turn on the check box for "Windows Sharing". Click on the Accounts button and activate your account. If sharing hasn't started by itself, click the Start button. Write down the address where it says "Windows users can access your computer at...". It would be something like \\192.168.0.122\username
5) Enter that address in the wizard at the Windows computer and click Next.
6) It will take a few minutes for the connection to show up. When it does, give the connection a name and save it.
In the future, you then just need to have Windows sharing on at your Mac and double click the connection you saved to connect. When you do, a dialogue box will appear asking for the Mac users' name and password to connect. Put in your long name (the same one that appears any time the Mac asks for your password) and the password. A folder will open on the Windows desktop.
Initially, it will only let you set the connection up for your entire Mac account. So you will see all of the folders within that account. If you want to confine the connection to the drop box, then run the connection wizard again. This time, on the page where you enter the Mac address, you'll have a drop down menu of all of the folders in your account. Choose username\Public\Drop Box and save that connection. Delete the previous one. Now when you connect (using the same long name and password), the folder on the Windows desktop will be confined to the Drop Box folder of your account.

Sharing files between XP & Vista Computers

I've set up Network Magic on my XP & Vista operating system computers. Works great from Vista to XP. Can share files perfectly. However I need the reverse. I need to share the files from the XP machine on My Vista machine. I get an error message that the Vista machine cannot access files even though the machines are communicating. I've set up windows firewall correctly on both machines, so I don't believe it's a firewall issue, but not absolutely positive. Any help would sure be appreciated. I've troubleshooted for a week & am about ready to take it to a professional computer repair center. I've tried pinging the other machine and get a timeout error, which leads me to believe there may be a communication problem. If anyone has any suggestions, I would sure appreciate it. I'm just about ready to throw in the towel. I thought that networking 2 computers would be the simplest task. It's turned into one of the most complex nightmares I've ever had to deal with on computers. Thanks for any help.

I double checked everything and file and printer sharing is turned on everywhere I can find to turn it on. Windows firewalls are configured correctly and have file & printer sharing on. I even turned both firewalls off & still was unable to access files on the XP machine. Internet works great on both machines. I can do a screen shot of the XP machine on the Vista machine and everything checks out as being connected & working properly. Something somewhere is blocking file access from the XP machine, but I cannot figure what it could be. I've uninstalled anything that I thought might be causing a problem and still get the "cannot access shared folder" message. It suggests a firewall issue, but as far as I can tell, there is no firewall blocking file sharing. The files share perfectly on the XP machine when I try to access the Vista files. It just won't do the reverse and when I try to use the networked printer on the Vista machine, the queue just holds the job forever and never prints. I also get a timeout error when I try to ping the XP machine from the Vista machine. I get a "file path not found" error when I try to connect to the drive using Vista's networking controls. The XP computer icon only shows up once in awhile and when I do a map network drive command, it says it cannot find the path even though the path exists and is typed correctly. Here is all the information about my system. I certainly appreciate any suggestions as to what might get this network finally sharing files from my Vista machine. Thanks.

I have been reading up on the different options on sharing files, and I want to ask if someone with experience can confirm what I think I have discovered.
1. A person on Windows can read and/or write to a Mac OS X formatted drive only if they run Macdrive.
2. A person running Windows XP can read files stored on a shared folder on the Mac through network sharing without additional software. But can they write to the shared volume on the Mac??
Now, I know all about the Mac side of things. It can read NTFS, read/write to FAT/FAT32, connect to Windows computers...etc. I have actually done all these things already, and know how to use them. I just want to make sure that I have the right idea before I go into working in the other direction, from Windows to Mac.

You don't need Macdrive for sharing files over the network, macdrive is only needed for a PC to read a Mac formatted Hard drive that is directly connected to a PC i.e Firewire Drive.

Yes you can write to a windows sharepoint on a mac this would be limited to their home folder unless you setup other permissions.
To setup windows sharepoints your best using a shareware utility called sharepoints
Now, I know all about the Mac side of things. It can read NTFS, read/write to FAT/FAT32, connect to Windows computers...etc. I have actually done all these things already, and know how to use them. I just want to make sure that I have the right idea before I go into working in the other direction, from Windows to Mac.
It does not matter what format hte pc drives are if your sharing over a network you only need to know about formatted drives if they are directly connected to the computer i.e firewire, or usb drives.

Sharing Files Between Partitions

I am thinking about using bootcamp to install Windows 7 onto my new iMac running Mac OS X 10.6.3 and i was wondering if after i partition the Hard Drive if i am able to share files between the OSs/Hard Drive Partitions. Or if i can bypass the drive partitioning all together.
I have seen that i need to format the HD, an i have also seen that for Windows 7 i cannot use FAT.
Can i share files between the partitions using with the Windows Partition being formatted with NTFS?
I would appreciate any advice or information.

Paragon NTFS allows you to write files from Mac OS partition on to Windows NTFS formatted partitions. Otherwise, it's read only. Yes you have to buy but you can do a free trial first. $39.00 for full copy.

It works well for me. Also helps if you want to use Disk Utility to format with NTFS format so that can create partitions for your windows OS. I have not tried the other one Mac Drive 8, which apparently let's you do the opposite and read write from Windows to Mac formatted drives. One person made a good point that there may be, but don't quote me, issues if you have a virus in Windows and windows can write to Mac drives that now the virus could harm Mac partitions. Not sure if this is myth or fact.
