Sharing Files over a network!

I'm on a network with many other users, some of which are PC's and was wondering how I could share some of my files over the network. How would I go about making a folder or group of folders which are able to be accessed (either with or without a password) on the network. Making sure that only the files within the specified folders is placed on the network?
Any help would be much appreciated!
Thanks!

  • Sharing Files Over a Network from an External Drive

I have a Macbook Pro that is running 10.5.6, and I have, recently, acquired another Mac that is running 10.5.6, as well. I decided that I wanted to share some files from my Macbook Pro. The setup for file sharing is a breeze, but I am having some issues. I choose folders from my Macbook Pro's internal drive, and I create two users, "alpha" and "beta." I give alpha privileges to share a folder called "A" and I give beta privileges to share a folder called "B." From my other Mac, I connect to my MBP, and I enter the correct credentials for each user, and "alpha" and "beta" have access to what was assigned to them earlier, respectively, folder "A" and "B."
Everything seems to be great! However, the issue begins when my external drive comes into play. (It is formatted as Mac OS Extended Journaled.) I select a folder called "C," from my external drive, and give only privileges to user "gamma." I also select a folder called "D," also from my external drive, and only give privileges to user "delta."
Whenever I login from my other Mac, I find a problem. If I login with "Gamma," I should only be able to view folder "C," but I can also view folder "D!" Whenever I login with "Delta," I should only be able to see folder "D," but I see folder "C," as well. I have fiddled around with many settings, and I have had no success. A few members on my network will be sharing files from my Macbook Pro, and I only want certain members to see certain folders. I've tried this with two different external drives, and they both exhibit the same issue. Is this something that can be fixed?
    Thanks for the help!

I'm sure that someone has dealt with this. Any input would be greatly appreciated!

  • Sharing Files Over Network and computers not showing up in sidebar

I am trying to figure out how to share files over the network. Now when I click onto the computer in my shared items, I do not get access to the home folder that I used to see. Instead, I am getting a folder image with the user name below it, but it says Sharepoint. However, when I click on the folder I get another folder that says dropbox with a down arrow. However, when I click on that it says it cannot be opened because I do not have privileges.
What happened to being able to being able to get access to the home folder from the users on the computer that you are trying to retrieve files from.
Are there settings I need to adjust to allow me to get access to the files on the other computer.
The other computer is an iMac G5.
My next issue is that my wife's iBook G4 doesn't even show up in the shared items in the sidebar.
Again, are there settings on this computer that have to be adjusted.
    Thanks in advance.

Hi Henry, and a warm welcome to the forums!
While you may get help or a solution here, It's quite acceptable to start a new topic of your own, certainly feel free to start a new topic to attract more helpers to your particular situation, here's a link if as is often the case, it's hard to find out where to do it...

It asks me to loggin I dont remember ever setting a login and password for it.
You need to add a User to the PC, or try with the PC's username & PC's Password.
My Main Problem is that my PC can see my Macbook...
On the Mac, did you enable Windows Sharing in System Preferences>Sharing>Services ?
I want to be able to use my printer that is hooked up to my Windows 7 PC with my Macbook
That has to be set first on the PC.

  • Relinking files over a network

This is more of an After Effects issue but I thought someone here might be able to help me or point me in the right direction.
I have a project that was created entirely with still images (almost 200,000) shot with a Canon 5D.  I converted the CR2 (RAW) to jpegs and edited the project in Final Cut Pro using those jpegs.  I then used Automatic Duck to send the FCP project to After Effects where I used the Batch n Replace script from aescripts.com (thanks Lloyd!) to replace the jpegs with the CR2 files for color correction.  The problem I'm running into is the script creates a new project where the CR2 files have replaced the jpegs, however everything is offline.  The images for each sequence are sorted into folders so I go to the first image in  a folder and tell AE to replace it with the proper file.  AE thinks for a bit and finds and replaces all of the other images in that folder.  Depending on how many images are in a particular folder, it can take anywhere from 5 minutes to several hours for AE to finish.  It took over 4 hours for AE to relink a project with 10 shots/images sequences containing over 12,000 images.
All of the AE project files are shared via Dropbox with the other Mac Pro in my studio.  I opened one of the projects on the other computer and tried to relink to the CR2 files on my RAID over the network but I had to do each image one by one.  Is there a way to relink the files over the network the same way as if they were on my own computer?

    Thank you all for responding.
    DaveS,
Ideally we would be able to work on two computers, sharing the project files via Dropbox.  As it stands now, we do have the same file paths on each computer for the images, just the work hard drives have different names.
Computer 1: Hard Drive A: Project Folder: Project Stills: CR2 files
Computer 2: Hard Drive B: Project Folder: Project Stills: CR2 files
It does take a long time to relink the files but I think that is in large part due to the nature of the project.  Do you know of a way that could speed up this process?
And it was a project with 12,000 still image footage items
    Dave L,
The jpegs exported form Lightroom are 5616x3744.  FCP has a frame size limitation so I would make a sequence set to 4096x2731 and place the jpegs in there.  Think of those sequences as quicktime files.  I would use them to do the edit in my 2K sequence.  Once the edit was in AE, I would resize those 4K sequences to 5616x3744, tweak my edit/frame/scale as necessary.
    Mylenium,
That article is pretty interesting, espceially since we have been talking about trying out the Blackmagic camera, however, working with quicktimes isn't an option for this project for various reasons.  If we were strictly editing on 1s we could do that but we often change parts of a single shot to 3s or 4s and will hold on a single image for a moment.  Going back and making new quicktimes everytime we wanted to make a change like that would probably be more time consuming than the issue we are having now.  And storage for 5K quicktimes would be an issue as well.
When I wrote that first post, a deadline was approaching fast and we were worried we wouldn't make it but we did.  Now we have some time and are looking at ways to make this process as efficient as possible.  We are in the color correction and compositing stage so everything is mostly going to be done in AE.
The whole project is 40 minutes long and we have each scene as its own AE project.  When they are all combined into the master AE project, the file size is 1.5 GB and it takes over an hour to open.  Ideally, we wouldn't need to open that project very often, really only when we are doing exports.  Is there a way to bring that file size down while still retaining the RAW images.  Is there a way to somehow proxy the scene projects in the master project?  Do you know if Adobe is working on ways to improve working with CR2/RAW in AE?
I know this a weird workflow and not really what AE was designed to do, but without spending $100,000+ at a high end post house, this is the best workflow we could come up with, while still retaining the RAW information.  We tried working with TIFFs but the sheer volume of images we have and each TIFF image averaging 100 MB it was too much of a storage burden.  If anyone has any suggestions to help with any of this or someone from Adobe can shed some insight, I will be forever grateful.

  • Cannot Copy Files over a network

I've had a new hard drive installed in iMac by Apple, and Apple re-installed the OS, which is running 10.6.7 (all current software updates are installed). The iMac is part of a network connecting to a OS X Server 10.4.10
All of the Network Drives have been connected, the user can copy documents under 1MB to and from the server fine. However if we try to copy files over 1MB the first file will copy fine, but then no more files can be copied to the server from this machine, regardless of the size.
If i use another Mac, with the same user credentials I can copy files of any size without any issues. I have tried connecting to the Network using both the Ethernet port and Airport but I experience the same issue regardless.
If I reboot the iMac I can copy a file over 1MB again and then the symptoms re-present themselves. I have tried creating a users, new network drives, folders etc. I can connect using any user, to any of the new folders from any other machine on the network but not from this one.
When the copying fails Finder just hangs with
Copying "" to "ShareName" rather than having the name of the file, I believe this may be where the error lies.
I have also tried running the App Maintenance from Titanium Software, after running this i can copy files over the network fine, but after I have copied 10 or so files, the situation goes back to not copying files correctly.

    Hi
I am streaming audio file over the network using JMF. I want to be able to know when a file end so I can close the streaming session.

If you put a ControllerListener on the Processor that's associated with generating the RTP stream, it'll generate an "EndOfMedia" event when the end of the file is reached.

    Hi folks,
I need to send sound files over a network. The files I'm wanting to send are wav files. I kinda have the mechanism that sends a file, but I am not sure how to convert wav files into something that I can easily send. Do I need to convert them into bytes, serialize them...etc I don't know.
Can anyone please point me in the right direction? An example would be very much appreciated.

  • Corporate Win7/Office 2010 | Severe Lag when opening Office 2010 files over the network

    Good Evening Everyone,
I work in a corporate environment for one of the top banks in the country (USA). We recently upgraded our computers to Windows 7. (The image has office 2010 included in the build)
I've been experiencing some severe lag when opening Office files over the network. Let me start by saying I've researched a lot and have yet to find a solution that works or even makes much of an improvement.
Notes: My laptop is new (64-bit Win 7 Enterprise). The remote desktop where the files lie is new as well. (64-bit Win 7 Enterprise) Both computers have good hardware and more than enough juice to handle applications.
There are certain files I work on along with other co-workers that we store on a computer within the office. We simply create shortcuts to the files on our local machines and make changes, etc. from there. However, after this upgrade, every time I try to
open a file on the remote computer, it takes over a 1 minute to load. I've spoken to our support team who sent someone out and confirmed it's not the network.
Both computers are on the same subnet as well. I've changed the trust center settings on both the client computers and "server" to trust any computer on the network. I have also changed the network card's speed from "Auto Negotiate" to
full duplex 100mbps with no luck.
I am out of options here and in desperate need for a fix. Even saving changes to a file we work on takes forever. 50% of the time when I close a spreadsheet, the title bar has a not responding message and takes a minute to eventually close.
PS: Extra Info : All computers run McAfee AV and use McAfee for disk encryption. I've confirmed all computers are up-to-date in every respect with the AV software.
    Thanks,

    Try:
    Open My Computer.
Open the Tools menu and choose Folder Options...
    Select the File Types tab.
Select the extension (for example DOC, or XLS) of the file that is slow to open.
In the Details section, click [Advanced], and another dialog box will open.
In the Actions section, click Open then click [Edit...], and another dialog box will open.

  • WIFI dies when transferring big files over the network

Hi, I have Dell Inspiron 1520 with ipw3945 driver, when I transfer big files over the network, my wifi dies, anybody knows what could it be? If you need additional information, feel free to ask...
    Thanks in advance

I guess we shall see. I can't imagine we are the only 7 with these issues.  Mine is mainly just lag... and overall slowness.  I hope to work through this.  If it lasts much longer I will have to revert back all 3 of my lappies to FC which I really do not want to do.  But on the lappies i connect via wireless 90% of the time and need it to work.
By the way how are you guys configuring your wifi?  I am using the iwl drivers and wicd.
Well I did some more testing and loaded up netcfg and still get the same results so that rules out that part.  I also did some packet captures and I am getting a bunch of tcp retransmissions followed by tcp segment lost followed by a reset which in turn kills my rdp session (remote desktop protocol). I also went back several versions of the uucode driver and still get the same reults so I guess it seems to be a kernel issue.  Back to FC I go.  Damn shame...

  • I cannot printany web pages or emails over a wireless home network. My OS is windows 7 and am using an Epson printer. I know I have the home network set up correctly as i can print files over the network.

I cannot print any email or web pages over a wireless home network. I know that I can print my files over this network, just not anything from the web or emails using Firefox. I am using Windows 7 and printing to an Epson.
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
== when I set up the wireless home network.

The most likely reason for this is that the wrong printer is chosen in the File->Print window.
In Firefox, go to File->Print and click the dropdown box with printer names. Ensure that the correct network printer is selected, then try printing again.

  • Viewing Shared Music over a network

    Good day everyone.
My problem relates to viewing shared music over a network. I have recently gone to university with my imac. Everyone on the network can see, and listen to everyone else's music, apart from me.
I was wondering why I am unable to do this? Do people think that because I am using OS X opposed to windows, that prevents me being able to view their music?

Are you sure you are on the same network as the other users?
In System Preferences, choose Network... select the ' Active' networking method (AirPort / Ethernet etc.) then Configure. Then choose the TCP/IP tab. What details are displayed?
You need to be on the same subnet (I think!) to other users for iTunes sharing. So, for example my iBook has an IP address of 10.0.1.6, and my iMac that hosts all the iTunes library is on 10.0.1.2. If my iBook had something like 192.168.0.1 then I wouldn't be able to see the iTunes library when using my iBook - hope that makes sense?
Check with other network users what their IP settings are

  • Unable to access shared files over network after period of time.

First off, I don't think that this issue is related to our router, but I have been searching for a fix and can not find one. We have a WRT54GS. Now, on to our issue:
At my work, we have a small network with computers sharing files between the others. I have attached a network diagram to help explain this better.
Our Win7 machine is our main computer that shares an external hard drive with much information that the other computers need to access. What we have noticed is either after a sleep, or even a period of time of say, 2 hours, those files are no longer able to be accessed. The Win7 machine is still sharing them, but the WinXP machines are unable to access them anymore and my Mac can see the computer is unable to connect to the folders. I have gone and attempted to get some help over at Microsofts site but that was a fail. Here is the link to the forum post there. http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7network/thread/f0a2e8d6-f75a-41d7-a280-c6f3adbffa...
A member there gave me this:
The Network connection is probably not resuming after sleep.
    First try this, http://www.ezlan.net/Win7/power_save_win7.jpg
It is in the Network Connection Properties under the Network card configuration.
If it already checked this way, or does not work after checking, the Network card has to be taken out of the computer's Power Saving loop, and stay on all the time.
Otherwise, Updating the Card with the latest OEM drivers (downloaded from the computer's support site) might help too.
On a rare occasions, some cards might be "Quirky" in this regards and need to be replaced.
--I would like to add that this DOESN'T ONLY happen after sleep, it also happens after a time of being used.
I attempted those and no luck. This problem is still occurring and the only way we can fix it is by restarting the Win7 machine. But even if it is being used, we have no idea when those files are unable to be accessed.
*I will add that the Win7 machine is still able to access the other computers when this problem occurs if that helps.
**The Win7 machine is a Dell T3500 running Windows 7 64bit. I can provide specific hardware if needed. The drivers are all up to date as of yesterday.
***So upon looking in the Windows XP machine, both of the folders from the Win7 machine disappear once this problem occurs in the My Network Places folder. And one folder is on the internal drive, one is on external. The computers are in this situation now where I am unable to access them. The Win7 machine can read and write from the other computers, but the other computers can even see the Win7 Machine.
****All the connections are wired and are not using the wireless.
Thanks for any help that anyone may have for me!

It sounds like there is incompatibility issue with XP and Win7. To isolate this, do you have another Win7 machine? Try to add it to the network and check if the shared drives are accessible after sleep. If you don't have another computer, try virtual machine and create a Win7 system.
Update your LAN card driver from the manufacturer's site. Don't use the driver from windows update.
Lastly, does this happen to your XP machines? Like, one of the XP machine sharing a folder and falls asleep. When it wakes up, does Win7 machine can still access the shared folder?

  • Sharing files over a home network...

I have a 2 year old iMac sitting in my basement.. I use it, and it is currently home to a ton of photos, videos and sound files (Logic as well as itunes). This week I plan on getting a Macbook to tootle with on the main floor (the basement is cold. ;))
I would love to be able to share files (and back them up as well.. kinda a nother issue).
As it stands right now, I have a 250 GB external drive which is backing up the iMac (but has hit it's limit).. need more space.
in addition I have a D-Link DLR 655... great little router. I believe it has Network capability in that I think through something called SharePort it can help you share files across a network.. no idea how.
So, yeah, that's about it.. anyone have any good tips in terms of building out a comprehensive backup system in conjunction with a file sharing capability across two macs (and maybe even a PC or two) across my home network?
Finally, how would that even work.. let's say I have an image on the imac, when I open it on the macbook, would I see it in iPhoto?
Lotsa questions.. thank you so much.
    Jay.

    Hi
Its not that obvious from the supplied information if you're talking about OSX Server? Perhaps your question might get more attention if you posted here:

Which is the main Leopard Forum. You could also look here:

Click 'more options' in the Search field, select All, Last Year and key in 'networking'. Should reveal something? This article might help:

What you're asking is simple enough. Connect all of your nodes (network devices; eg: macs, pcs, printers etc) to a switch or router or combination of the two. Depends on how many nodes you have. Wired (Ethernet) or Wireless will do. Make sure the router is providing IP addresses. Basically is its built-in DHCP Service switched on? By default most of them are. Once that's done and you've verified they can all access the internet, enable File Sharing. System Preferences > Sharing for the Macs and for the PCs right click the 'C' drive > Properties > Sharing.
Backup is a vast subject and its difficult to be concise. A lot depends on your skill set, means, budget and location. You could search this and the XServe/XServe RAID Forums as it has been discussed many times. A basic principle is to make sure you can effectively restore what you backup. Most people forget this when implementing an effective backup strategy. To start you off purchase a large enough external hard drive. Connect to all your macs and simply drag/drop what you want. If you have Leopard use Time Machine. For the PCs use something appropriate. Photos & Music can be transferred from mac to mac by simply enabling the options in the applications themselves. ITunes > Preferences > Sharing: Look for Shared Libraries; Share this Library. When you launch iPhoto hold down the option key. It's fairly obvious after that.
If you double-click on an image presented in the Finder (shared) on one mac then your mac will use whatever application it can find that it thinks can handle the file. For image files that could be Preview or Quicktime or if you have it installed an image editing application such as Photoshop. You can even define which application handles which type of file by control-clicking on the file itself and selecting 'Open With'.
