Sharing KVM with iMac

Greetings folks. I'm stuck in the Windows world and am looking to replace my desktop with an iMac. Today, my employer requires a windows based build, and I have a requirement to see the consoles of several machines at the home office.
I've learned that there is not a display input on the iMac, but was wondering if anyone had any KVM like strategies to share? Any particular software? I'm trying to avoid going down the KVM over IP route due to cost.
Would love to hear suggestions!

No, that is actually a great idea and solves most of my problems. Couple of issues...
1) For security purposes, my laptop has a firewall on it that I cannot override. I can tell my work laptop to connect to a service that would allow me to share remote control to it, but I can't just connect in.
2) The only other thing would be to try and figure out how to get to some of my other console devices (linux-based). Maybe I could enable them all to talk over RS232 and console to those directly via a console server, or just keep a spare monitor around in case I need it (use the Mini DVI out on the iMac and hook that into a switch box in case).
I was looking at Synergy, but have not tried it yet.

  • Problem: Sharing Folders with iMac and winXP

We have been running a small workgroup sharing so far two winxp machines over a wifi-modem-router-switch. The two pc share folders without problem.
I have now proudly made the switch over to using Apple iMac. Whilst the iMac experience is fantastic, getting to share the iMac with the rest of the winXP is turning into a nightmare.
I have spent 45 minutes with the tech support team of my ISP router supplier (ISP:Club-Internet - Router :AH4021/Tecom AH4222)
Every check & settings turned out to be fine, but they were unable to diagnose the problem.
I spent 3 sessions and over 1 hour (without counting time waiting over the phone) with the Apple support team, and whilst they were very friendly, they were unable to diagnose the problem.
I cannot ping the iMac from the xp machine, but I am told there is hope though, as i can ping ok my xp machine from iMac.
    All firewalls have been removed.
File n window sharing set on all machines.
DHCP manually setup assigning fix IP/DNS etc..
Same username on all machines, with unique machine name
Is there anybody who could help? Help!

Just hanged up from Apple tech support France, and this time, spoke to another friendly AND helpful support assistant named Simon.
Simon got me straight into the Finder>Go>Connect to Server
Type into your Server Address window : smb://and here your pc ip address you want to get to
    example: smb://192.168.1.2
Hit Enter key, and your pc should appear
    Thank you Simon!
Also, watch out for port 80 being hugged by apps like Skype...it might interfer
AND any port being specified into your NAT configuration in your router might confused the search.
    Voila!

  • Sharing contacts with Imac

I can't get my contacts to share between my Iphone and IMAc in Icloud

Are they really in iCloud?  Can you go to http://www.icloud.com from Safari and see them there?

  • Does simple file and folder sharing on an iMac work with OSX Server?

    Hi There
I wonder if I should install OSX Server on an iMac wher several users work on the same files and folders.
My question - before I do something I might regret:
Does simple file and folder sharing on an iMac within several users really work with the help of OSX Server?
All I want to be able to do:
Admin creates a new folder1 and gives it read- and write access for user1 and user2.
    User1 creates a subfolder1 in folder1, and a document1 in subfolder1.
    User2 edits document1. Later Admin edits document1.
All these simple editing of files and folders (and subfolders) within a main folder should be possible. This is not possible now.
Is everything clear? I'm not a network specialist or something, I just want to give some co-workers access to some data on my computer without problems.

So what you need are recursive permissions.
I suggest you create a group and add user1 and user2 to that group. You can name that group whatever you want, but for now i will call it FSUsers
Execute this in terminal. Replace FSUsers with your new group
    sudo chmod -R +a "FSUsers allow list,add_file,search,add_subdirectory,delete_child,readattr,writeattr,readextat tr,writeextattr,readsecurity,file_inherit,directory_inherit" /Users/Shared/*
Replace /Users/Shared with the location of your shared folder. Make sure you keep the /* at the end (this allows all subfolders and files to get the same permissions.
If you need to add people to the share just add them to the FSUsers group, the FSUsers group should should also be allowed in the sharing preferences.

  • My host name changes every few days, since Xmas adding a macbook its changed 6 times. Do I need to stop this? Does it cause problems with sharing between the iMac and macbook?

my host name changes every few days, since Xmas adding a macbook its changed 6 times. Do I need to stop this? Does it cause problems with sharing between the iMac and macbook?

There are several possible causes for this problem.
    1. Two (or more) computers on the local network have the same Bonjour name, such as "X's-MacBook-Pro.local".
    2. You have two simultaneous connections to the same local network: probably Ethernet and Wi-Fi. If applicable, disconnect the Ethernet cable or turn off Wi-Fi.
    3. A Mac wakes from sleep due to network traffic. This is due to a bug in OS X that may only affect some models.
    4. A device that gets its network address from the router wakes from sleep, and the address it was using before has been assigned to another device.
    5. A third-party wireless router has incompatible settings or firmware. In that case, refer to the manufacturer or ISP for support. Restarting the router may help, temporarily.
    6. See also this support article.
Rename the computer in the Sharing preference pane.

  • IPhone Bluetooth not sharing with iMac - WHY????

iPhone Bluetooth not sharing with iMac - WHY????
How can this function not be available on iPhone - What an embarrassing disgrace Apple!!
I refuse to conform to iTunes - NO!
Am so over your lack of basic user services Apple - sort your **** out!!!

The simplest answer is that the existing Bluetooth is not suitable for this purpose. With a max speed of 2.1 Mbps (0.5% that of USB), it would be pretty painful to use for this purpose - a backup of a 16GB iPhone would take a whole day. Transfer a movie? It would take an hour.
On top of that, Bluetooth doesn't provide a standard mechanism for the type of data transfer and synching that iPhone needs -- they'd have to write their own propriety one and you'd still have to use proprietary software to do the data transfer / synching.
A better mechanism would be standard Wi-Fi, which would be MUCH faster than Bluetooth and for which the protocols necessary are already in place. It's still comparatively slow to USB (about 10% that of USB), but much faster than Bluetooth. However, it appears that Apple's research has led them to believe that waiting an hour or two for the phone to backup over Wi-Fi using the existing mechanism is still undesirable.
From what they've indicated about iOS5, however, it seems that they will be supporting more over-the-air updating and synching mechanisms, meaning that, for the first time, you can do most everything but backup the phone without iTunes (though document exchange for certain apps is much faster and easier with iTunes, it won't be necessary).

  • Is it possible to add a second monitor via mac mini with iMac

    Hi
is it possible to add a second monitor via mac mini with iMac
    or is there another solution?
all i want to know is if i can run a second monitor or link a mac mini for more speed like i heard you can with the G5 Towers.

The iMac will allow you to connect a second monitor but that monitor will show the same thing as the iMac's built-in screen.
You can network a Mac mini and iMac via Ethernet or Firewire.
Software load sharing like Xgrid can allow you to share work between the Macs.

  • File sharing problems with my Media Player, an A C Ryan

I have a media player, an A C Ryan, hooked up to my wifi at home and it normally accesses all my hard disks that is plugged and shared on my iMac. I had no problems when the iMac was on Snow Leopard. Under Network/Workgroup in the AC Ryan's menu, I can see and access all the files on the hard disks.
The moment I upgraded to Lion, all such access was lost. The AC Ryan cannot connect to the hard disks any more via the wifi network. it's as though file sharing has stopped completely. I checked the file sharing settings on the iMac and nothing has changed i.e. the disks were shared as usual. After struggling with many possible solutions and failing (I checked out a lot of forums), I reintalled Snow Leopard and the problems were immediately solved.
Is there something seriously wrong with Lion's file-sharing? Has this been fixed in 10.7.2? My friend who has a similar setup (his media player is the WD Live) has exactly the same file sharing problem with Lion.
I would appreciate any feedback. Thanks!

I believe that NTFS-3G has issues with Lion.
I use Paragon NTFS and have had no issues at all. I am pretty sure that NTFS-3G will get updated, but you need to check their site to find out when.

  • Messages not working while using Internet sharing from my iMac ... Any troubleshooting tips/approaches ?

I am connecting to the internet using the Internet Sharing from my iMac ...
The trouble is the messages in the Messages app are not sent when I am connected through my iMac ... When I key in a message and hit send a progress bar appears fills up till 90% and just gets stuck there and after a while the red exclamation mark stating the message was not sent appears ... Now if I connect through my wi-fi router or thether through my phone it works fine ... I can send / recieve messages ...
Similar points to note - Today when I tried to make an App Purchase - The security info screen ( new additon - http://isource.com/2012/04/11/iphone-app-store-security-info-alert/ ) popped up but I got a blank screen for the securtiy questions screen ... It was not loading the screen ... Some games the game center invite does not work through my Internet sharing (tried in MetalStorm) ... but works fine thorough wi-fi or thether ...
What could be the problem with my iMac s sharing? Any suggestions would be really useful ///  Thanx in advance
I am running Lion ... and I have updated to the latest Airport software ...
Only thing I tried was changing the DNS ... but that s not related right ?

Powerline adapters use your home powerlines (mains a/c) to connect your devices via ethernet to your modem, they're easy to set up and the they TOTALLY fixed my ATV problem, the problem seems to be with the wireless. I've been trawling through apple discussions, and did found a workaround to my problem https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4222883?start=0&tstart=0
but its just a workaround :/

  • Not able to use internet sharing on my iMac 8.1 using Mac OS X 10.6.8

Im not able to use internet sharing on my iMac 8.1 using Mac OS X 10.6.8, I tried internet sharing with OS Lion and it works fine. Has anybody else experience this problem and  what was the solutions.

If your OS is OS X 10.4.11 then you should be able to install iTunes 8.1 which according to the iTunes page requires 10.4.10 or later (which is a lower version than yours). It also requires QuickTime 7.5.5 so check your version of QuickTime. Version 10.4 is Tiger by the way. Leopard is 10.5 and Panther was 10.3.
Make sure that your OS is at the version you think it is. Connect your MacBook to the internet and from your desktop go to the Apple symbol on the Finder bar at the top of your screen. Choose "About This Mac" and check your OS version. Also from the same menu choose Software Update and see if you are offered any updates for your computer. If it does offer an OS X update, install it and anything else in the list then run software update again to see if any more components are offered for the new version.

DO ANYONE have the same problem or know how to fixit... ?? Im a MAC lover, geek and a woman , but this one I just cant fix.
    PLEASE HELP
    Thanks in advance
    Julie

    Julie,
I'm having the same problem as well.  See this thread   https://discussions.apple.com/message/19929421#19929421
Were you ever able to come up with a fix for this?  It sounds like problems at Apple's end, but it is very frustrating nevertheless since it is critical that I be able to see my wife's shared calendars with the amount of time we spend apart traveling.
Many thanks in advance for your help.

  • SkyCaddie Sg4 won't Sync up with iMac

I have an iMac running OSX 10.6 and it will not sync with My Sky Caddie Sg4 . The iMac is missing the drivers to talk to the SG4 . If I go to a friends iMac running OSX 10.6 I have no problem syncing up . I have worked with Sky Caddie they can figure out what the problem is . When I first got the SG4 and had this problem Sky Caddie knew they had a problem with iMac and sent the drivers to load and the iMac worked fine . I had the hard drive go bad on the iMac and lost all My software on it , now back to no sync again . Has anyone else had this problem and found a fix ?

Thank you for your help! I will check on this directly tonight.
I'm embarrassed to ask this but do you happen to have "the recipe" to check on this aspect?
I'm wondering if I'd need to make sure sharing not on in many places and not just one area of the computer. Thanks again and may you have a wonderful weekend ahead!

  • IPad successfully paired with iMac, but it says it isn't connected

It says my device is not connected and on my iMac, it shows the bluetooth connection to the iPad, but has a red dot and it says not connected. How do I connect them. Thanks!

My iPad isn't house broken, never mind jailbroken. It's a bog standard Gen 2 iPad (no 3g).
The iMac is by the window, where it's able to pick up a free WiFi signal. The iPad doesn't see the WiFi at all, even when I stand by the window with it. The iMac seems to have a better receiver. That's when I decided to see if I could use the iMac to share its internet connection, and after a bit of mucking around it worked via bluetooth.
    Hope these images help...
    1. iMac SysPrefs 'Bluetooth' tab screen shot
    2. iMac SysPrefs 'Sharing' tab screen shot
To check "Bluetooth PAN" checkbox on the right, you have to uncheck "Internet Sharing" on the left first. (Re-check it when you're done)
    3. iPad Settings 'General' tab, Bluetooth 'On' (photo)
    4. iPad showing iMac connected via bluetooth (photo)
...that's yours truly reflected on screen, w/cam
    5. iPad showing web connectivity via bluetooth connection with iMac, no WiFi (photo)

  • I have a problem with Imac mid 2010 graphics card (ATI Radeon 5670 512MB)

I have a problem with Imac mid 2010 graphics card (ATI Radeon 5670 512MB). When I play video formats like xvid, mkv, avi iMac freezes and emits horrible sound,in service said the problem is not overheating. Not a problem with memory or hard disk because I placed second correct parts. The same problem is with OSX 10.6.8 and 10.8.4 and other players.Apple hardware test found no problem and tech tool pro found no fault.
After five days of testing in the service they can not  found fault and it was decided to change the graphics card.
New graphics have been tested for two days but it is not reproduced divx ... but their test software which did not find any fault on the old graphics...
Do I have the right to complain if repair does not fix the problem because I use non apple softwere and video formats.

You could look at the System Profile for the info it presents for the card.  But why wouldn't you think it's not up to date if you have the latest install (according to your sig above)?
What program are you trying to run?  Is there anything in the system log?
I think it's the program that's having the problem and not anything with your video software.
