Sharing library between computer over a network

Hi,
I'm trying to share 2 different ip libraries on 2 different computers. But one has ip4 and the other one has ip6. Do both iPhoto have to be of the same level (ip4 vs ip6) to be able to share?
Reason is that I see the icon of the other library on each iphoto, but on the ip6 on my laptop, (trying to access my G5 with ip4,) i see the icon of the G5 ip4 and as soon as I click on it, it disapear and I get a message that there was an error with sharing library.
On the other way around, when I try to access the ip6 laptop from the ip4 G5, I click on it and the icon remains in the album sections, and it get de-selected automatically, and it reverts to the root ip library being selected. The Macbook/laptop icon remains in the album column, but cannot remain selected. I get NO sharing error on this one.
Apple website and help menu claim that to share you only need 10.2.6 and iP4 and above!
Please advise!
michel

Hi Brie,
I'm not sure exactly what are the 6 steps exactly.... but I did all the check box in ip preferences of both computer.
I found this in the iP help menu
To share your photos on a network:
1-Choose iPhoto > Preferences.
2-Click Sharing at the top of the Preferences window.
3-Select the "Share my photos" checkbox, and then choose your entire library or only the albums, slideshows, or books you want to share.
4-Type a name for your shared items in the "Shared name" field, and a password if desired.
The shared name you enter appears in the iPhoto Source list on computers set up to look for shared photos on your network. If you select "Require password," users will need to enter that password before they can see your shared photos.
DONE ( did not use password)
To look for shared photos:
1-Choose iPhoto > Preferences.
2-Click Sharing at the top of the Preferences window.
3-Select the "Look for shared photos" checkbox.
DONE
Not sure what other step there are to do if any!

  • One Answer To Sharing Stubborn/Naff Printers Over A Network

    Dear all,
I posted a previous question concerning sharing a Canon i320 printer and got a swift if disappointing answer. Whilst the answer was entirely correct in that it was a fault with Canon's driver and the lack of a CUPS version, I have found an alternative to giving my perfectly working i320 printer a Viking Funeral which may also answer several other peoples problems. Just as well because it probably wouldn't float anyway.
It may not be news to some but there is an application for OS X called PrintFab - www.printfab.net which seems to provide CUPS drivers for most printers, including the i320. This allows you to share your disappointingly naff printer over a network just like one of those proper printers you should have bought in the first place.
I've just achieved a successful printout using the evaluation version of this software. Sadly there's no such thing as a free lunch. This one costs 49 euros in it's basic form but in these ecologically challenged times, it does allow to continue using your current printer. It is presumably cheaper than Airport Extreme which was suggested as an alternative. It did take a while to print so I'm unsure about performance in that area. I guess with an evaluation version, you can check that yourselves.
    Hope this helps.

  • Sharing Library Between Users

new to iPhoto...is there a way to share and/or use the same library between two users of the same computer?
i don't want to have to duplicate our photo collection...and my wife and i both have seperate user accounts on our macbook. is there a way to be "tied" to the same library?
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Skimout:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. There are a number of ways to share a conventional library between users on the same Mac. I'm not versed in them but there are some, like Lori, who have compiled a lot of links covering that subject.
However, I am familiar with a way to share a single set of source files on a Mac with multiple user using iPhoto's alias system. This way each user does not have to copy the files into their library, taking up drive space. Each user will have their own edits, albums, slideshows, etc. They will be able to delete photos from their library but not from the source files.
I've creates some Tutorials on how users can convert over to an alias based system and use it for sharing with others. If you don't find what works for you this method might be of some use.

  • Installing solaris from a windows xp computer over a network

Hi, I just received the solaris 10 dvd from sun. I have the sparc and the x86 versions. The problem I have now is that I need to install it onto a computer that does not have a dvd drive. Here is the current set up of the network:
I have three computers connected by a switch. Then I also have a laptop which has a wireless connection to the internet. The laptop also has a cable connection to the switch which allows me to share the internet connection to the other three computers. Not the best setup, because when I leave with the laptop the desktops have no internet. Anyway, the laptop has Windows XP microsoft internet connection sharing enabled so it acts as the router. The desktops, one has FreeBSD with DHCP enabled, another has windows xp and the third has Ubuntu. The LAN is working well so far as all can connect to the net.
So now I would like to know if I can and how to install solaris onto the Ubuntu desktop with the dvd inserted into my windows xp laptop over the network. This will be my first Solaris install so I really appreciate all the help and pointers to any tutorials on the net.
    Thanks!

  • IPhone no longer connects to my computer over local network through apps

I've been trying to fix this for months. I've worked with technology and Apple computers for three years. I am by no means an expert but you can believe me when I say I've tried all the basics.
I first noticed the problem using FullControl. I liked to use this first thing in the morning. One morning it wouldn't connect, "Error: Connection error (22)." I hadn't updated or changed anything. I actually put my computer to sleep the night before using the app! I was on the local network. My computer was running the helper. My computer was showing up as a device in the app. But it would not connect. I figured something was wrong with the app.
So I opened up Splashtop 2. My iMac showed up in my list but with a satelite icon informing me it was not connecting on the local network. I was still on my wifi as was my computer. I used it earlier that week.
I checked out the support pages for both apps. I updated everything. I turned off, on, and checked the connections for my firewall. I turned off my security applications and followed guides to remedy blocks they might cause. Nothing worked.
I checked Apple discussions and found people having similar issues but no one had a fix. A few found success but nothing worked for me.
A few days later I went to use my Remote app. My iTunes Library showed up in the local devices but it would not connect, "Remote can't connect to your iTunes library. Check your network settings and try again." I checked. Tried again. "Could not find [my] Library." I went back to the devices and connected to my Apple TV 2 instantly. I tried connecting my iMac with the Apple TV and found no issues. Each communicated with the other fine. I tried to connect Remote to my iTunes again but it failed.
I verified and repaired my permissions. I thought the "SUID... ARDAgent.app... [permission] has been modified and will not be repaired" could've been the problem but Apple and these Discussions assure me that this is normal and not a problem.
I recently downloaded Air Playit and ran into the same problem. I set it up on my computer following the instructions. I opened the app. The app showed my computer as a "Computer on Local Network" but when I tried to connect to server, "Connect Server Failed: Cannot connect the server, check the IP, Port and try again." I did and it didn't connect.
Save for this new app, everything worked before. Nothing has worked since that morning FullContol failed (including the new app).
Is there an answer out there?!

    FullControl (Full version)
    Splashtop 2 (Full access)
    Remote
    Air Playit
    - All apps and applications updated as of 06-29-2013

Intego's VirusBarrier X6 was blocking my iPhone's connection.
I saw that the program was blocking attempts to connect and took the address off the Blocked list. I instantly connected through everything again. It turned out to be a major oversight and easy fix!
If anyone else is having similar issues, check your AntiVandal software and make sure your devices are not being blocked.

  • Sharing Library Between PC and Mac

    Hello all,
I recently transferred my iTunes library from the PC to an AirDisk. The annoying thing is that when I open iTunes on the Mac, it does the "Updating iTunes Library" which takes a while to complete. When I open iTunes on the PC, it does the same thing. Is there a way to prevent this from happening? Or is this the nature of sharing an iTunes library between PC's and Mac's?
    Thanks
    Mac mini (1.42 GHz PPC) | MacBook (2.0 GHz C2D) | Mac OS X (10.4.9) | PC with XP SP2

Sorry I should explained it better. I'm talking about how it seems the OSX iTunes is doing some converting when the library was last opened with the Windows iTunes. It takes 30 minutes for this coversion to complete. If I open the library in OSX, and it was last accessed by the OSX iTunes, there is minimal delay. I assume there is some conversion because (1) the iTunes Library file increases in size; and (2) the kind of file reported by OSX changes from iTunes Database File to a Unix Executable File.

  • Automatically adding files to 2nd computer over a network

Maybe one of you very clever experts can help me out here.
    2 Macs 1 itunes library . . .
My iTunes folder is stored in an extrernal HD connected to my desktop.
On my notebook I pointed my iTunes folder location to my desktop's external HD's iTunes Music folder over a network. This way I can control and copy my music from both computers.
My problem is that I add new music everyday which means I have to manually add music files everyday to my notebook.
Any way to automatcially add the new music files from my desktop's external HD to my notebook over the network? I just want to add the files not import the songs.
Anyone know the answer to this question would be a great help.
    Thanks,
    OP

What I do is similar to yours - the actual music library is on an HD attached to a mac mini and I have my powerbook pointed to it. If I add music, the music files will be added to this library - whether they are added through the powerbook or the mini.
However, the reference to the files - the 'iTunes Library' & iTunes Music Library.xml files - is on both machines individually does need to be up-to-date on them both.
So, when you have added music, you need to ensure that you copy these files to the other machine. (To clarify, if you add music via the laptop, copy the files to the desktop - and vice-versa.)

  • Itunes Shared Library between Mac and Windows isn't sharing videos properly

Hi, I'm a bit new to the mac world, but I'm the proud owner of a new macmini. I also own a Windows 7 machine.
My problem is with the Itunes Shared library. Itunes 10 on my mac is set up to share everything, including podcasts. I can see these from Itunes 10 on Windows, and I can play music (and audio podcasts), but video is hit or miss.
Videos downloaded from Itunes U tend to work, lectures and stuff.
Video podcasts (also downloaded from Itunes Store) and other videos don't work at all. Itunes just doesn't play the video, and doesn't even launch the "black screen". The timer remains at 0.00.
On the other hand, sharing videos from the PC to Mac works well, i.e. my mac can see the contents of the itunes shared library on Windows and play videos. It just doesn't work the other way around.
Thanks for reading and I hope this problem can be fixed.

  • Sharing library between two logins on the same computer Windows XP

This itunes help topic does not work in sharing the libarary.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300432
Has anyone figured out how to do it?
    Thanks.

I do this with my wife. With two logins you get two libraries. Make sure you store the files somewhere accessible to both users. We use a networked drive. All you really need is a folder you can both get at. Set iTunes within both accounts to point at the the desired storage location and use the same Music Store account.
The only complication I have found is that tracks imported by one person are not automatically added to the library of the other. For instance, CDs I import can be used by both of us but she must import the tracks in order to have them in her library. I have a excel file made for this. When I import a CD I add the name to the list then in the next column is an "x" meaning I have it. The next column gets an "x" when she adds it to her library.

  • Sharing library between multiple Computer accounts

I have 2 users on my computer, with equal access. When I use the primary account, the iTunes functions normally. I placed the iTunes music library in the shared file.
The other account cannot access the library without manually importing the songs, and this obviously is not updated when I buy/import new songs as the primary user.
Any way to have the second user able to access the same library as the primary?
    Thanks in advance.
      Windows XP

(As long as we don't take the laptops on vacation and leave the external drive behind...)
In those cases just copy the Domain.sites2 file to the laptop and run it from there while you're on the road. When you get home move it back to the external HD replacing the one there.
Using it on the iDisk would be glacially slow.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.≤br>
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Sharing library between 2 IDs on same machine

Hello.  I'm trying to figure out the most strategic way for my wife and me to share content without overlapping each other on our respective devices.  Here are our specifics:
    *  We each have separate Apple IDs and iPhones/iPads.
    *  We share a single computer (laptop running Vista and latest iTunes) but have separate user accounts on it.
    *  We select from the same pool of content on laptop (not sure if that means that we have separate libraries?), but must have distinct apps/music/other stuff (e.g. contacts) on each of our devices.
    *  I recently added a network-accesible storage drive to hold all of our media content.
    *  Ideally, we'd also like to be able to share our app purchases across our devices within the five-device license limit
I'm ready to start moving our media content to the shared drive but am not sure what's the wisest way to proceed so that I'm not painted into a corner down the road.  For instance, since we maintain separate Apple IDs, does it make more sense to have separate libraries?  Or is it even possible to have a single library without having to share an Apple ID/password?  But when I move all content to the shared drive, would separate libraries result in two sets of files?  And I'm not 100% sure what role the home sharing function within iTunes should play here.
I'm sure that I'm making this more complicated than it needs to be, so I'm throwing myself to the experts who've been here before.  I want to ensure that I've got the best mix of shareability, device customization and lack of duplication.  Thanks much for your suggestions.

FWIW, check these support articles for pointers:
How to use multiple iPods, iPads, or iPhones with one computer
how to share music between different accounts on a single computer

  • OSX iPhoto App: Sharing Library Between Two Users

Despite the limitations of the new Photos app I am considering migrating our iPhoto/Aperture library to it so that I can take advantage of the iCloud Photo Sharing facility. However the library, which is stored on a suitably formatted ext HDD attached to our iMac, is shared between two Apple IDs, mine and my wife's.  This enables us to add photos via either Apple ID and view the entire library on all our devices (we both have iPhones and iPads as well as sharing an iMac and MacBook Pro).
How do we continue to share a joint library using the Photos app and iCloud Photo Library?  Trying to keep two libraries in sync is too much hassle and would also require both of us to buy additional iCloud storage.  We need a solution that enables both of us to view and add pictures to the library on all devices but only requires one of us to buy additional storage space to store it.

I recently bought my parents a new MacBook Pro (they switched from Windows). I was able to get all of their songs over and into my dad's iTunes library. My mom and dad each have separate accounts on the MBP, but they'd both like to be able to see (and listen to) the same iTunes library, not at the same time, obviously.
Is that possible? If so how?
the easy way is to use itunes sharing. start itunes in your dad's account and enable sharing in itunes preferences->sharing. then other users including your mother will be able to listen to the songs from your dad's itunes library but ONLY while your dad is logged in. so in order for this to work both of them should be logged in at the same time. to make that possible enable fast user switching in system preferences->accounts->login options. However, this is not terribly convenient.
it's possibly (but surprisingly tricky) to use the same itunes library without having both users logged in at the same time.
Is it enough to point my mom's iTunes to the same folder? Do I need to put special permissions on that iTunes folder while logged into my dad's account?
yes. not just permissions. you need to put inherited ACLs on your dads Music folder to give both of them read+write access to all current and future files in it. so log in as your dad and run the following terminal command (copy and paste please)
    chmod -R +a "username allow delete,chown,list,search,add_file,\
    addsubdirectory,delete_child,file_inherit,directoryinherit" ~/Music
instead of username put the short user name of your dad's account. it's the same as the name of his home directory in /Users. then repeat the command with your mother's username instead of your dad's. after that log out of your dad's account, log into your mom's account and point her itunes library to his itunes library. to do that start itunes while holding option.

  • How do you run a program on another computer over the network

Would like to send and receive my aol email and run other applications from my other G4 that I don't have installed in my main computer through the in house network- without opening the application on the main computer. In other words, running the 2nd computer from the main computer.
    Does that make any sense?
    Hope so, j

    Hi Joseph, makes perfect sense!
You need to get Chicken of the VNC on yours...
    http://sourceforge.net/projects/cotvnc/
Then on the other G4>System Preferences>Sharing, enable these Services...
    Personal File Sharing
    Remote Login
    Personal Web Sharing
    Apple Remote Desktop
    Remote Apple Events
You should be able to have the other G4's screen show up on yours and run the other one.
