Sharing Music On iTunes?

I just moved into college and everything and I noticed that I can view and listen to other peoples library which is awesome, but I was just wondering how I can get my library on there for people to view. Where do I go to set that up? thanks

Go to Preferences, click on the Sharing tab, and check "Share my library on my local network". You can share your entire library or only selected playlists.

  • Sharing music from iTunes on an Xserve to new MacPro Desktop + MacBook Air

    Hello all,
Have a question here regarding sharing a central iTunes playlist/XServe and also enabling the functionality to add music to that XServe library remotely
    Current Setup:
-- Mac XServe running iTunes 24x7, sharing one playlist containing entire music library
-- MacPro Desktop and MacBook Air connected to shared playlist and streaming music successfully from XServe shared playlist
Short of running to another part of the house and sticking a CD into the XServe, please let me know if anyone out there is aware of a way to copy music to the iTunes music share/folder on the Xserve and have iTunes automatically scan that folder and add to the library/playlist, or some other option to add music to the central library for administration (Perhaps apple remote desktop to the XServer and then...)
Any thoughts appreciated, I will respond with more info ASAP if requested.
    Best,
    Elliott

Here are typical layouts for the iTunes folders:
With iTunes 11 you might also have a Home Videos folder inside iTunes Media.
In the simplest cases you copy the entire iTunes folder from <User's Music> on the source computer to <User's Music> on the target machine, install iTunes, and it "just works"TM.
If the media folder (inside the red outline) has been split out to a separate location then you can copy the library folder (outside the red outline) as before and connect the drive holding the media so that it has exactly the same path as before. If the drive appears as D: on one system and E: on the other then the library won't be able to find the media.
The crucial file is iTunes Library.itl - this contains a record of the tracks that have been added to the library, ratings, play counts, playlists etc.

  • Sharing music with Itunes and windows XP

    Hi Everyone,
I am new to this group, but couldn't find anywhere else to ask for help!! I have searched this database, but could not find an answer that worked for my problem!
I am PC based and have several computers all running windows 2000. They all have itunes running and are very happy to share the music. I just purchased a new HP machine running windows XP and cannot get Itunes on this machine to share its music, or see any of the other machines shared music. I have read various messages about setting port 5353 and have tried this but with no success, I completely disabled my firewall but still not success? Does anyone know why XP will not see the other computers shared music or share its music? I have tried sharing the directory (with the Itunes music)on the new machine but still no success! I can go into itunes on one of my other machines and "add folder" so that the other machine see's the directory on my new machine with all the music, but I would like to share the music via Itunes? Maybe I am being naive! but it works for 2000 why not XP?
Any help would be very welcome.
    Thanks Gary

    Thanks Rachyl,
The link was how to share files, I can do that, my problem is that the itunes programs on my XP machine will not speak to or listen to the itunes programs running on any other machine (mac or windows 2000). I would like to know how to get the XP machine to communicate with the other computers and then share its music.
    Many thanks Gary

  • HT1203 I have done everything on this list.  How do I see the shared music in iTunes?

I have done everything on the list "to share your music with multiple user accounts on one computer" on Windows.  Now, how do I see the shared music?

Tones is the new name for Ringtones. If the entry is missing in the left-hand column of iTunes then enable it from Edit > Preferences > General tab.
If your existing tones are not syncing properly to your iOS device then uncheck the option to Sync Tones from the Tones tab when the device is connected, sync the device, check the option and sync again.
A properly constituted .m4r file (<30secs AAC at 128k) thrown into the Automatically add to iTunes folder should end up getting added to the correct section of the library.

  • Sharing music on Itune

I Want to know the best way to manage my music at home. We are 4 users (2 IPhone and 2 IPod Touch) with 2 computers on a network. I Want to know if it is possible to save All music in the network in the same folder for All users and acces this folder with iTune to sync music in our device?  I Want to keep it as simple as possible. I Want to be able to had music buy by an other user in my iPhone.  One computer is a laptop with Windows 7 and the other one is a desktop with Windows XP.  Tank you

    Hi
This problem is inherent to using a common iTunes library on an AirPort disk. There is a simple but somewhat clunky solution. The xml file is actually (or should be) stored in the iTunes folder on your AirPort disk (the xml files in the iTunes folder on each MacBook are no longer used once accessing the AirPort library). Each time you quit iTunes on each machine, the xml file is saved and updated. So if you add tunes or alter playlists on one machine, to get the other to see the changes you must quit iTunes to update the xml file, and reopen iTunes on the second machine. I've seen some other posts about corrupting the xml file sharing this way, but I have not experienced this.
I'm still working through some other little bugs with sharing iTunes and iPhoto libraries this way, and it turns out that Apple does not formally support this use of AirPort disk utility. I was told this while working with a tier 2 tech support for about an hour yesterday trying to solve an iTunes playback problem from the AirPort Disk with my network in WDS mode.
I'll be interested to find out if there are scripts or other fixes for this and will check out the suggested link.
    good luck!

  • Sharing Music in iTunes w/ Airport Express

    Hello,
After installing my Airport Express, all the shared libraries from other university students in my building are now gone within iTunes. Everyone else with Airport works great: printing, speakers, internet.... Anyone have any clue how I can fix this?
    Thanks
    Nick

This problem is unique to users of the Airport Express on a university network. Connecting to a university network doesn't have the same requirements as connecting to a cable or DSL modem, because on a univesity network you don't necessarily want the Airport Express to act as a router between your computer and the network the Airport Express is connected to.
You can fix this by disabling the router built into the Airport Express. To do this, run the Airport Admin Utility, select your Express, click the Configure button, click the Network tab, and then uncheck the setting to "Distribute IP addresses". Update settings to the Airport Express. Then restart your computer.
There is a possible downside to doing this - which is that while you will be able to access everyone else's shared iTunes library and the internet, there is a possibility (depending on how IP addresses are distributed on your university's network) that you may no longer be able to print or stream iTunes to your Airport Express. If these functions of your Airport Express do contineu to work (this is good!) they will also be accessible to everyone else on the university's network (this is not so good!).

  • Error-3259 when sharing music on itunes 6.0.4.

I've searched everywhere to find a solution for this error with no answers. I've almost given up using itunes. I've purchased the powerbok G4 months ago and downloaded itunes 6.0.4 version. I don't know if this version is incompatible with the older versions, but I receive an error -3259 everytime I try to share music. They claim that it is for an unknown reason and asks me to check if my computer has been set to allow communication on port 3689. I've looked into it and and everything seems fine. I am still new with Mac and have been asking around, yet no one seems to know why. I've checked the firewall and made sure it was set correctly, checked my airport, and made the correct changes on itunes preferences-no luck.
Any comments would be great!! Thanx

    Hey, CardsFan
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
That is a very common problem,
    - Just uninstall the whole software.
    - Use a registry cleaner software and clean the reg
    - Restart the pc
    - Download fresh copu of itunes from the Apple site
    - Install
    And them you are done.
I really hope this helps you. Let me know if it does. If not feel free to give me a shout. Best of luck.

  • Sharing music on iTunes! Urgent reply!

Hi, i am at university and when im connected the network a lot of students share their music online, allowing u to listen to their music on the shared server.
    NOW
is there any way of being able to download this music to my library, and if so how?
    reply urgently
    cheers

surely there is nother way of just knocking on peioples doors and asking lol. There has to be a hack or programme which allows me to.
Oliver, do you realize that you are asking people here to help you steal music?
The music in shared playlists belongs to the owners of those playlists. They do not belong to you. If you obtain them through any means other than buying them yourself, then you will be guilty of piracy. Also, posting a question like this is a violation of the board's terms of use.

  • Can no longer import shared music in iTunes 10.7

I've been able to do this in the past, but all of a sudden can no longer do this.
two computers.  one Mac Book Pro, and one Mac Pro.  Both on OSX 10.8 & iTunes 10.7.
I can see the MBP library on my Mac Pro, but can't 1) filter to see the items that are not in the main library, and 2) import the new items.
There used to be a filter at the bottom of the iTunes window that was "Show" - and within that, you could click to filter items no in library (a compare tool).
    Am I missing something?

I finally solved the problem by connecting the iPad to another Mac (without synch'ing anything). Re-connecting it to my iMac, I was suddenly able to see the options in the right pane again, rather than just being able to un-mount. Here the post from the user who reported this solution first: link

  • Playing Shared Music Via Front Row

I've just got an IMAC Intel core 2 Duo and I'm having trouble playing shared music via Front Row. I have five accounts on my machine and can play any shared music via itunes but cannot access them via Front Row...........any ideas?

If you had the option of storing your media on a separate hard drive, I guess I'd have to ask for a few more details about your current arrangement before making any more recommendations. For example, why do you have five different user accounts, all logged in, all playing iTunes and all sharing songs at the same time? Could you not consolidate all of the media onto the Mac mini (or an external drive plugged into the Mac mini) and have the Mac mini doing all the iTunes sharing? So, when another user wants to listen to some music, they can play it from the Mac mini, rather than the other way around?

  • HT1203 iTunes: How to share music between different accounts on a single computer - I tried to use the instructions to configure 2 different windows users sharing the same iTunes library.  I could not get this to work per the instructions.

I tried to configure 2 windows users accounts using a single library per the instructions in HT1203.  My iTunes library is on an external drive.  I cannot get this to work.  Any suggestions?

To give other users read-only access to your iTunes library, use the Sharing features of iTunes. Sharing works over the local network as well as on the same computer. See the built-in help for details.
If you want to give full read/write access to more than one user, see the support article linked below.
iTunes: How to share music between different accounts on a single computer
There is a way to share the library without moving it to a secondary volume. If you really need to do that, ask for instructions.

  • Sharing Music with the rest of the family over iTunes

I have an MBP, with all of my family's music on it. My husband has a PC laptop. I have enabled sharing, so that he can see our music and use his computer with AirTunes to play music over our speakers. However, he is not able to make his own playlists on his computer, and then put those playlists on his iPhone. This is really annoying for him. Plus, he doesn't buy music on iTunes, because then he wouldn't really be able to share it with me.
I would like our music (and photos, too, for that matter) to sit on a server in our home network and everyone to have equal access to them - be able to make their own playlists, etc. Is this possible? Would getting a Mac Mini and putting the music on it work? Anyone have experience like this?
Reading these forums, this kind of question seems to be a common issue. Apple, are you developing some kind of family media center?

I too am attempting to coble together a "whole house" music library.
Here is what I have had moderate success with.
I use an Airport Extreme Router and have a USB hard drive plugged directly into it. The Airport Extreme allows that drive to be used as a "Network" drive that can be setup to be accessed by any of your computers that use that router.
Next, I moved my iTunes music folder to that hard drive.
Finally, you go into iTunes preferences and tell it that you want to use the iTunes Music folder that is located on your "Networked" drive.
This works pretty good but it's not bullet proof. I currently have 2 Macs that access this library and I'm pretty sure my wife's PC could access it as well for her copy of iTunes but she hasn't taken the time to sit down and figure out the settings.
So far, the main failure point is that the iTunes software seems to randomly decide it is going to reset which music folder it is going to access and you have to go back into the preferences and tell it (again!) to use the folder on the network drive. This is especially annoying with my Macbook. It accesses the router wirelessly and EVERY time I close the Macbook it resets which folder it want to access.

  • Sharing Music Help! 2 Users Accounts, 2 iTunes accounts, share SOME music??

Hi - I'm new to Mac and iTunes all together (finally joined the cult... and love it!)
Anyways, My ideal setup is to have 2 User Accounts and 2 Separate iTunes Accounts so my bf and I can buy our own music, obtain separate libraries, yet share SOME music. I want to see all of MY music in the Music Library when I log in, but I still want to be able to transfer some of his music to my phone's playlist and vice versa.
Currently, our Itunes libraries are stored on each of our user profiles /users/name/music. When I log into iTunes, I see my music and [if his user account is logged on] I can see his under SHARED. But that doesn't allow me to transfer his music to my playlists and in the end, my phone.
I read Apple's how-to on pointing each of our iTunes to Users/Shared and but then whenever I'm in iTunes it would just be a huge pool of both our music and I have to weed through all of his.
Any suggestions on how we can both maintain our separate libraries/accounts but share some music (not just listen to each other's music).

In the Finder. I should have said "In the Finder, create the folder /Users/Shared/Music".
In case it wasn't clear, all of the instructions should be carried out in the Finder. iTunes should definitely not be running when you move your library and create the aliases.
    A few additional points:
    1. There's nothing significant about the folder location /Users/Shared/Music. You can substitute the name of any folder you want, provided all users will be able to read and write to it.
    2. Beware of having two or more users accessing your shared Music library *at the same time*. (Since you mentioned you want to share your music between two users on a single MacBook, I assumed only one user would access the library at a time.) This only becomes an issue if at some time in the future you share a library in this way between two computers over a networked drive. If two or more users are making simultaneous changes to the same iTunes library, they will stomp all over each other's changes, and very likely corrupt the library. Note that it's also possible to corrupt your music library if you both are simultaneously logged in on your MacBook via "Fast User Switching", and are both simultaneousy running iTunes and making changes to the library. So don't do that. (Not that you ever would.)

    Hi, Dave.
If you're using the BlackBerry browser, you can't configure anything to bypass the RIM servers.  I believe you may do so by using the Opera browser, but I haven't tried it myself so cannot comment with authority.
I hope that clears up the issue for you.
