Sharing Photos among sessions

Something that has been bugging me for a while…
On my family G5 we have 3 different iPhoto sessions with 3 different photo libraries. The thing is I wish we could have some photos in common (since, you know, we're a family and do stuff together) without duplicating them.
I wish it could be like in iTunes where each iTunes session manages a same Finder folder and has only chosen tunes from it.
It seems like the only way to see photos that are in another session is to either duplicate them, or use the photo sharing system that requires iPhoto opened in the other session and would show photos in a separate list.
Maybe I missed out on how to do it,
Thanks for your answer !

I don't think it's really a valid point since iPhoto keeps all the original photos.
So, you want to redo all your edits after someone else has undone them?
As such you could code it so that every session can have his modified photos
You already have this. Using the Sharing by preferences method anytime you edit a shared pic it is saved in your Account and available to your library only. The pics in the main shared account are left untouched.
(with an option to set the modified as original=definitive change for the admin session).
That would break a very basic tenet of modern computing: I should never be allowed edit a file that I don't own.
Think of it like iTunes shortening tunes capacity : you can set a tune to end at 3'58", and yet the other sessions will still hear the boring applausing until 4'35" if they want to.
But it's not like that at all. That's changing a playback option, a setting in the database file. The mp3 file itself is not affected in any way. When you edit a pic you're changing files. There is simply no comparison.
the 7 year old can have fun making all his photos Sepia and set all his tunes on iTMS mode : lasting only 30 sec from the middle.
As I said above, this is can be done using iPhoto Sharing. The important thing is that the Original Library is untouched by this.
I can see iPhoto is not a media server. I wish it was a local one.
What's the difference between a media server and a "local one"? A server is a server, whether the files are been served to a new account on the same machine or a different Mac in a different country.
Like I say, you can buy server apps, they're just more expensive.

  • Sharing photos among several Macs

Until iPhoto 08, I was able to share photos among my laptop, my deskside and my wife's iMac by carefully moving files between the systems.
I do not want to carry an extra hard drive with my laptop to download and view photographs while traveling!
I want to be able to edit the photo collections on the different systems.
Is there still a way to move the photos among systems and use iPhoto 08?
If not, can anyone recommend a replacement for iPhoto 08 that allows sharing across systems?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
There are two ways to share, depending on what you mean by 'share'.
If you want the other user to be able to see the pics, but not add to, change or alter your library, then enable Sharing in your iPhoto (Preferences -> Sharing), leave iPhoto running and use Fast User Switching to open the other account. In that account, enable 'Look For Shared Libraries'. Your Library will appear in the other source pane.
Remember iPhoto must be running in both accounts for this to work.
If you want the other user to have the same access to the library as you: to be able to add, edit, organise, keyword etc. then:
    Quit iPhoto in both accounts
Move the iPhoto Library Folder to an external HD set to ignore permissions. You could also use a dmg.
(Some people have had success putting the library in the Users/ Shared folder. If you do this make sure the file permissions are set to allow read/write access to everyone.)
In each account in turn: Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting dialogue, select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new library location. From that point on, this will be the default library location. Both accounts will have full access to the library, in fact, both accounts will 'own' it.
However, there is a catch with this system and it is a significant one. iPhoto is not a multi-user app., it does not have the code to negotiate two users simultaneously writing to the database, and trying will cause db corruption. So only one user at a time, and back up, back up back up.
Also you can use iPhoto Library Manager to move albums, events or pics plus metadata between libraries.

  • Sharing photos among multiple users on same MacBook

My wife and I both have user accounts on our MacBook Pro. She has all of our pictures on her iPhoto. How can I access those photos? Thanks in advance.

For iPhoto 09 (version 8.0.2) and later:
    What you mean by 'share'.
Any user can drag a pic from the Shared Library to their own in the iPhoto Window.
Remember iPhoto must be running in both accounts for this to work.
If you want the other user to have the same access to the library as you: to be able to add, edit, organise, keyword etc.
Quit iPhoto in both accounts. Move the Library to the Users / Shared Folder
(You can also use an external HD set to ignore permissions, a Disk Image or even partition your Hard Disk.)
In each account in turn: Double click on the Library to open it. (You may be asked to repair the Library Permissions.) From that point on, this will be the default library location.

  • Searching photos among shared photos by others

In iPhoto '09 sharing of photos can be done over a network.
Can searching also be done by restricting search as date, keywords, events among shared photos by others ?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
You can search the Shared Library by date and title, but not keywords.

  • Sharing a single session among multiple portlets for single application (e.g. wInsight)

Does anyone know the best practices way for sharing a single Session for an application (running on a single Porlet server) among multiple portlets on a page?
For example, the application wInsight uses 3 frames (navigation, search results - tabular, search results - chart) which need to communicate via the application's session scope. It is not just that we do not want for a single user to be running multiple sessions, but they really do share variable parameters this way.
So far I can only think of trying to build a one true portlet and two empty containers on page load. I would use the portlet to establish the session with the Portlet server and then transfer the session information to the other two empty containers to instantiate their respective portlets. I haven't tried this yet, but will do so soon...
Any help and feedback would be greatly appreciated.

    Karen,
You can easiliy create several portlets out of a Struts application. For detailed instructions, refer to the Struts section of the Portal Developer's Guide.
    Good luck,

  • Sharing Photo Libraries on one computer with two accounts

I have two accounts on my Mac Mini, OS 10.7.5 and have enabled photo sharing in both. However the second account, my wife's doesn't show the photo libraries I'm trying to share. Any thoughts please

Photo sharing works only between different computers, not for accounts on the same machine.
On the same computer you can give your wife direct access to your libraries, like described here:
iPhoto: Sharing libraries among multiple users
Or if your Mac MIni can be upgraded to a system that supports iCloud, you can share selected albums as Shared PhotoStreams: See iCloud: Using and troubleshooting Shared Photo Streams

  • Multiple Users One Computer sharing photo's

    Hi,
I have two user's on my computer, both with different log on's etc. How can another user look at my photo's that are currently in iPhoto with out having to move folders around.
Can this also be done with iTunes so that we can share music without having to make duplicates?
    Thanks.

  • Problem sharing photos from multiple accounts on one Mac

I am trying to share two different iPhoto libraries from two different User Accounts on the same Mac. In each account I have iPhoto Sharing 'Look for shared photos' and 'Share my photos' checked. I also have the Firewall on with port 8770 enabled.
    1. From a Powerbook I can only connect to one library. Once I pick that first library the second library will not load at all. I have to quick and restart iPhoto in order to select the second library. -- I fixed this by turning off my Firewall. With the Firewall off I can switch between the libraries at will. My question, what ports should I enable besides 8770 to allow multiple instances of iPhoto to run? (Just like you need multiple ports to have the ATV connect to multiple instances of iTunes.)
    2. When I am configured as above, my two iPhoto applications do not see each other. They can both see and connect to the Powerbook. And the Powerbook can see each running instance. But neither iPhoto instance on the same Mac can see the other. This is new with iPhoto '08. I was able to do this with iPhoto '06.
    Thank you

  • Sharing photos between multiple users on one Mac

I'm trying to figure out how to easily share photos imported in by one user to other users in my family on my mac. I'm assuming we don't have to import them multiple times. It seems cumbersome to this new mac user to share them. I find the issue with iTunes. Any help?

  • HT201077 Can I share all my photos with my wife without having to constantly add photos to the shared photo stream?

My family has an imac where we have a family photo library in iphoto.  The iphoto library is under my wife's profile.  My wife and I each have an iphone 4S.  I'd like all the photos my wife and I take on our iphones to automatically upload to the iphoto library on my wife's imac account.  I've tried a few different ways of doing this and none of them are ideal.
My current solution works, but has some unwanted side effects.  Currently, my wife and I use the same main icloud account on our iphones.  This would be the perfect solution if it didn't take up the same icloud storage (among other issues).
It'd be nice if you could have 2 photo streams linked to the same iphoto library on a mac.  This way both my wife's photo stream and my photo stream would downloand to the same iphoto library.  It doesn't appear that iphoto for mac allows this.
I realize I could do this the old fashioned way (outside of photo stream).  But, it seems as though there should be a solution that works automatically.
Could there be a solution creating a shared photo stream on my iphone and sharing this photo stream with my wife?  I've looked into this but can't see how it would work automatically.  It looks like you have to manually add photos to a shared photo stream.  I'd like the shared photo stream to update itself to include all photos I take.
Does anybody have a simple solution for this problem?

There is not (yet) an easy solution to use an an iPhoto library with two separate My Photo streams.
It might be easier to take the family photo library out of your wife's account and move it to a shared location, so boh of you can maintain it, see:
iPhoto: Sharing libraries among multiple users
This way, both of you could download automatically to My Photo Straem and your private iPhoto Libary, remove the worst pictures, and then export only the best shots to the shared library. This will make the shared library smaller and at the same time create a backup of the best pictures, and it will ensure that your family will never see a potentially embarrassing photo. Sharing My Photo Stream is really dangerous, because each and any picture you take will be added the PhotoStream, before you can delete it.
As you may have seen at Apple's WWDC keynote presentation the new MacOS X Maverick will bring more sharing options for Photo Streams: Watch the keynote
You may want to wait for the next software generation before doing any major reorgansition.

  • I do not see all photos exist inside a shared photo stream using iPhoto on Mac

There is a shared photo stream among 5 different users with 125 photos and videos inside. For my account I use 3 different devices to access this photo stream, an iMac, an iPad and an iPhone. All 125 photos appear ok on my iPad and my iPhone. However when I access this stream from iPhoto on my iMac I only see 69 of them. None of the photos I have shared using my accound are there plus some other photos and videos shared by other users. Other users can see all 125 photos in their mobile devices. What is wrong with iPhoto on my iMac?
    Thanks in advance,

    OSX version 10.8.5
    iPhoto version: 9.4.3
With these versions you cannot see the contents posted on IOS 7.0.4 devices by the persons invited to the stream. You will only be able to see the photos streamed by the owner.
If you want to see the photos added by the subscribers to the stream, you need to upgrade to Mavericks and iPhoto 9.5.1. Mt. Lion does not support the new shared photo streams of IOS 7.0.4 fully.

  • Sharing Photos on Macbook Air

My wife and I now have a new Macbook Air with two user accounts (both Admin level).
My wife has an iPhone and I now have an iPhone & iPad.
I loaded all our historical photos onto her account (from our old shared MS running laptop).
The photos from my iPhone/iPad loads up into my account
and the photos from her iPhone load up into her account.
Obviously, if I want to access our historical photos I can logon to her account But is there an easier way?
How does file sharing work and would this allow us to easily share photos (& files, etc).
    Many thanks...
Obviously, we are new to Apple laptops and systems although have been using iPhone and iPad for some time.

  • ICloud shared photo comment

    Hi,
My wife, her mom, and I are using iPhones. Of course we thought iCloud photo sharing is the best way we can share our photos because we live apart. So my wife set up an iCloud photo sharing album and invite her mom and me. There have been no problem to share photos among us, but, I found something weird.
Most of time, it is my wife and I who upload photos. My mother-in-law usually leaves comments on photos. By the way, what I found was the comments that my mother-in-law left on the photos are seen only to whom posted the photo and not to the other one. For example, if my wife posted a photo to the iCloud shared album and her mom commented on the photo, the comment are always seen to my wife and not to me. Then, in case that I posted a photo, the comment by mother-in-law is shown only to me.
Is there anything we did wrong in setting up the shared album? I tried to find out, but could not. Any helps?

iCloud shared photo stream stopped working since the last OX update with the new photo app.  I don't have access anymore to the sharing albums, even those that I own
Don't the albums show at all?
Are you signed in  with the same Apple ID that you used with iCloud before?  And are you currently browsing the System Photos Library? Only one Photos library, enabled as the System Photos library can sync with iCloud.
For me it helped to disable iCloud Photo sharing in the System Preferences > iCloud > Photos > Options
and in the Photos. app Preferences < iCloud.
Then restart the Mac and enable the same Preferences again.
    And wait.
The Shared albums came slowly back and were all back after one day.

  • Sharing Photos: Different Users, Same Computer

So far, I've tried some suggestions found in other postings, but I still can't share some photo libraries between different users on the same computer. I started an account for my son. Sharing was enabled in both iPhoto Apps. I've tried locating the libraries in a Shared folder and putting them in a folder not associated with a user. Opening a port 8770 in the Sharing/Firewall window didn't change anything either. No matter what, when I open my son's iPhoto and try to Add To Library, some libraries will import and others have a circle with a red line next to them. Those will not import and I can't figure out what the difference is between them. Any thoughts?
