Sharing the imac as a "server"

I'm a bit of a newbie when it comes to networking, so I apologize if this seems really basic.
My office recently purchased an imac with a 120GB hard drive. We have run out of "workstations" but half our staff is only part time, so we want to be able to have our interns work at any station that's open when they are here. Could we partition the new imac (since it's the best computer in our office) that the primary user (who is part time as well) could use it when she is in the office, but it would also have a drive that could be accessed by all our interns wherever they are working? (I'm currently doing lots of grantwriting for technology funding but need help in the short term)
I would want to make sure the primary user's files were not accessible by the internal network.

I recently setup networking on wireless linksys
router 2 PCs wireless and imac G4 ethernet . Somehow
my imac became the server.
Are you writing about your Mac becoming the Windows Master browser?

At a guess, I'd say "local master = no" is what you want, but you could
also frob the "os level" value.

The only options would be:
VNC set-up. It's fairly low speed of refresh would probably make this undesirable for video/games: Screen Recycler (link)
A video-in device. A device like Elgato's EyeTV Hybrid (link) would not be of sufficiently high resolution to be any use for video editing/detailed work.
Bootcamp would probably be a better solution for you.

It looks as though 2011 is not compatible with 2003 per some searches online, but what are some options I have to gain full access again? I purchased parallels in hopes that this my help and I am able to use remote desktop connection to log on to server but can not drag and drop files I need. There is a shared drive on that Server we all use to exchange files.
The two main issues are gaining access to my email again and ability to drag and drop files from mac to pc. I hope this is enough info to get some solutions.
PS - IT person says my iMac's IP is what his server does not understand so that is why I can not login.

Office 2011 is not compatbile with Exchange 2003.

Go to: Apple > System Preferences > Universal Access and in the Seeing tab make sure that the Display Enhance contrast: is set to Normal.
Alternatly, try holding the ⌃⌥⌘ (control command alt) keys and then pressing the , (comma) key a few times.

Recently upgraded to 10.8.5 however the Himedia player connected to my iMac via sharing can no longer connect to the iMac.

Sharing the Canon printer on my iMac with a Windows Vista PC

You must have been asked this many times before. I just cannot share my Canon iP4500 with a friend's PC running Vista. I have installed Bonjour on his PC, but haven't got a clue how to access it on Vista. The PC and the iMac both connect to a wireless router, but trying to make them talk to each other is proving very difficult!
If someone here has the knowledge and patience, what I would like is a step-by-step guide. Do I need to install the Canon printer driver onto the PC? The assistance on the Apple web site is very sparse in this area, to say the least!

Hi Graham,
In the Sharing pref pane on the Mac, are Windows sharing and Printer Sharing both enabled?
Not positive on the PC end, but I think Printer Sharing should not be enabled.
Bonjour on the PC is accessed by right clicking on a Connection, at least in XP.

Do a malware check with several malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.

There are several possible causes for this problem.
1. Two (or more) computers on the local network have the same Bonjour name, such as "X's-MacBook-Pro.local".
2. You have two simultaneous connections to the same local network: probably Ethernet and Wi-Fi. If applicable, disconnect the Ethernet cable or turn off Wi-Fi.
3. A Mac wakes from sleep due to network traffic. This is due to a bug in OS X that may only affect some models.
4. A device that gets its network address from the router wakes from sleep, and the address it was using before has been assigned to another device.
5. A third-party wireless router has incompatible settings or firmware. In that case, refer to the manufacturer or ISP for support. Restarting the router may help, temporarily.

Yes. Unfortunately the stereo is too far from the wired ethernet connection My iMac is connected to the internet using an ethernet cable from the DSL modem (plugged into the wall, not wireless). The Airport Express is plugged into an outlet 25' away from the iMac and connected to my speakers. I've turned on the iMac Airport wireless Internet Sharing, hoping to stream iTunes to the Express connected to the stereo. The iMac Airport picks up several neighborhood networks so I know it's working (and I connected my iPhone wifi to it just to check as well).
When I use Airport Utility to set up the Express, the only time Utility recognizes the Express is when the iMac Airport is off. When I turn on the iMac Airport, the Airport Utility immediately loses the Express and asks to rescan.
Maybe that explains my problem better.

I can see and play the music from the imac, on the macbook. However, I want to add the music to the library on the macbook so I can have it even when the macbook is not "in range" for homesharing? How can I copy the shared liabary to the macbook?

To clarify my issue diesel vdub i updated itunes to 10.7 version after that every time i select some of my songs and click get info, it shows me a message that i tunes can't find the songs original location and a ! icon appears on the song selected after that. all my songs are in a external hard drive and it is connected to the pc and i can acces it but i really don't know what's wrong with the itunes or what it is

Sharing a 3G usb modem on the iMac via Airport Express

I would like to be able to share my 3G/HSDPA USB Modem that is currently connected to my iMac over the Airport Express wireless network at home. The objective is to let every computer (PC and Mac) connected to the wireless network (Airport Express) to be able to access the internet via the iMac 3G/HSDPA connection.
I could have shared the 3G connection directly via the Internet Sharing, but this would require the computers to switch wireless network.
Can anybody describe on how to achieve this?

Finally, after several tries with the guidance of Duane's posts on how to set it up, I got this to work.
Objective: To be able to share a 3G wireless connection connected to an iMac using 3G USB Modem with the rest of the network connected via wireless Airport Express.
{Internet} <---> 3G USB Modem <---> iMac <---> Airport Express <---> Other computers (PC and Mac)
1. Set the Airport Express to Join a Wirelss Network, and name the network to be the same name as the name of the network set in the Internet Sharing (on the iMac)
2. Set the Internet Sharing on the iMac, and share the 3G USB Modem network name to the Airport network and name the Airport network to be the same as No. 1
3. That's it....

You need to get that information from your internet service provider if you are using an email address provided by them or, if you are only using iCloud, then the info can be found here:

FWIW, in order to set up email, you need both an incoming and outgoing server address (in addition to your email address/user name and password). Those are the servers your email program uses when sending or receiving emails.

IMac isn't loading a specific website (can't connect to that server), regardless of browser, though the same website will load on other computers on same network. Is it an issue with the iMac's settings?

Possibly. Make sure you are not using a proxy server. Look in Safari Preferences > Advanced > Proxies > "Change Settings..." This will take you to the applicable Network Preferences. Make sure that nothing is selected in the "select a protocol to configure" list. It should look like this:

Locate your Terminal app. It is in your Utilities folder. Open Terminal.
In Terminal, copy (triple-click) and paste the following line:
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of every login item'
This will produce a list of all your account login items.
While you are in Terminal, copy (triple-click) and paste the following line:
kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}'
This will produce a list of all non-Apple kernel extensions. There will be few, if any.
Post the results of the above.
