Sharpen / dodge / burn tool changes from circle to bullseye

Why does the sharpen / dodge / burn tool sometimes change from a circle to a bullseye in CS6 ? I have pixels adjusted up.

Good day!
Is caps lock set?

  • Dodge/Burn Tool

Hi. Just been playing with PSE8 and having problems with the dodge/burn tool. Know it's usually located with the sponge tool but for some reason I can't access them. The sponge tool is visible in the tool box but when highlighted, the options at the top are only for brush type/brush tool/Mode and Flow. Any thoughts?

when highlighted, the options at the top are only for brush type/brush tool/Mode and Flow
Just FYI, this is going to be true for all grouped tools--the other tools in a subgroup no longer appear in the options bar, only in the toolbox itself, but you can still switch by repeatedly tapping the letter shortcut key for the tool group.

  • CS4 Clone Stamp and Dodge/Burn not Working

CS4 clone stamp is kaput. Flattening image does not help. Source region shows in the cursor circle when pointing to target region, but when I left-click and hold, the target region shows, and cloning does not occur. Tried resetting the tool, no help. Opacity is 59, flow is 85 and hardness is 51.
Likewise tried the dodge/burn tool, does not work either.
Using PS v. 11.0.1 Tried to download windows patch to update to v. 11.0.2, but the msi file is not recognized as a valid windows installer.
I have CS3 on my notebook. Cloning the same region there works fine.
    Any ideas appreciated.

I don't see anything obvious you've done wrong.
    Some things to try:
Try temporarily disabling the use of OpenGL through Edit - Preferences - Performance, or selecting an alternate level (Basic/Normal/Advanced).
Try disabling the "Show Overlay" feature in the Clone Source panel.
Check the web site of the manufacturer of your video card for updated video drivers.

  • Aperture dodge /burn brush very slow

I have a 15" late 2011 MBP with 16GB Ram, SSD, high res screen and when I try to use dodge / burn on photos from either my Canon 7D or 5D MKII sometimes the adjustment brush takes 5 seconds to process the brush marks. I am using aperture 3.2.2 raw 3.9 , lion 10.7.2 with all the updates.
I can process the exact same files from Lightroom or photoshop without any slowness whatsoever. I have tried everything under the sun that i can think of, repair permissions, trying files from different drives etc and I get the same result every time its crazy slow. Some of the brushes work faster than others but every one of them have delays. I have tried it on different photos from different cameras but all with the same result.
any ideas? I have run out

I just tried all of those things, even ran all 3 of the repairs and no difference
I even created a new libary and tried totally different pictures and had the same results
if anyone has any other suggestions I am open to hearing them

  • PSCC2014 dodge/burn weak?

Installed on my WIN 7-64 system are PS CS6, PS CC and PS CC2014 (each used with a Wacom Intuos 4 tablet, with latest driver). In CC 2014, I notice that now the dodge / burn tool (s) seem to be significantly 'weakened': what used to take a few brush strokes (using the stylus) to effect now takes me many brush strokes to achieve the same result. This IS with the same Preferences and the same Tool Options Bar settings, and with the exact same file, using the same stylus. It is also whether I am working on an image layer or on a mask for a layer.
Since I work so much on refining masks, I need these tools to work efficiently like the did in the two previous versions (again, all conditions were the same).
Is anyone else noticing this, and/or is there something being reset in CC 2014 that's hidden that could be causing this?

Noel, thanks for your suggestions, but the settings I use the dodge/burn tool(s) on ARE the same for each PS version: I use Dodge set to Highlights, Burn to Shadows, and vary the Exposure, as I usually want quick results.
I did try resetting the tool, but this defaults to Midtones at 50% Exposure, which doesn't 'work' for me as it's just too slow (in any version).
Since I almost always dodge/burn on a mask, the Protect Tones setting is not enabled when working on masks.
Here is a further clue to my dilemma: I took the same file, opened it in PS CC and PS CC 2014, loaded a Luminosity Mask, and compared how the tool works with the stylus and with the Wacom mouse. AHA! With the mouse, it does work as previously in CC 2014... but definitely NOT with the stylus. I did count the strokes, so I know it's not my imagination.

  • CS5 Eye dropper tool changes bottom color instead of top one

For some unknown reason, my eye dropper tool changed from when I use it to select a color, it used to be the top one. But now it is changing the bottom one which is causing more steps. How do I get it back to what I click on changes the top color at the bottom of the tool bar? I've tried clicking on the color boxes to bring front to back but no luck.
    Thank you.

  • Dodging and burning tool freeze up on CC 2104

I have recently subscribed to CC Photoshop 2104 and when using the burn tool the programme just hangs, or takes a very long time to complete the action. i have to close down lose my work and re-open. Dont know how to fix it, help?

I recognize that you want to use the Dodge and Burn tools for local tone adjustment, but it would be to your advantage to use another approach for dodge and burn. Consider this:
Dodge and burn, techniques that provide subtle local adjustments in the tone values of an image, are familiar to anyone who has worked in a film & paper darkroom. Photoshop’s similarly named tools have one notable shortcoming; each dodge or burn dab is incorporated into the image. This makes it impractical or impossible to undo one or more of the changes minutes later, when other dabs have been added elsewhere in the image. Instead, you must then pile correction on correction rather than modifying the original image values. It is an inefficient and often destructive procedure.
There is a better way – one that puts the dodge and burn adjustments on a separate layer where they may be seen at any time and each adjusted or even eliminated, returning the area to its original value – all without corrupting the original image. This is how to do it:
    1. Load a file to be retouched and add a blank layer by clicking on the Create a New Layer symbol at the bottom of the Layers panel to the left of the Trash. The blank layer is Layer 1.
    2. Choose Edit > Fill and from the double-arrow options of the Use field, choose 50% gray. Then click OK. The image area will become gray overall.
    3. Change the Blending mode in the Layers panel from Normal to Overlay. The Background image will return although you will be working on Layer 1.
    4. Do not use the Dodge and Burn tools. Choose the Brush tool and adjust its size by tapping either of the square brackets to the right of the P key on the keyboard. To adjust the Brush hardness – a soft edge is best for this -- hold down the Shift key as you continually strike the left the square bracket. Set the Opacity of the Brush in the Options bar at about 10%.
    5. Painting in white will Dodge (lighten) the area, Black will Burn (darken) the area. Strike the D key to place Black as the Foreground color and White as the Background color. To transpose them stroke the X key. Dab or stroke with the Black to slowly add density. To lighten an area, dab or stroke with White. Although the image will reflect the changes, they are being recorded on Layer1 and may be viewed by turning off the eye in the Background layer. Best of all: to undo any tone adjustment and return the area to its original value, simply return that area to 50% by cloning from an adjacent unretouched area in Layer 1.

  • Dodge and Burn Tool basicly stopped working.

For some reason the Dodge and Burn Tool in Lightrooom 5.4 basicly stopped working. It will only make a slight adjustment no matter how much I change the exposure value. Does anyone know what could be causing this?

Do you have the flow and/or density of the Adjustment Brush set to a very low level?

  • Photoshop 6 and the change in Color Dodge/Burn blend modes

Photoshop 6 introduced a few changes in blending modes. Here´s a tip on how to save those older PSD´s, and continue with the Color Dodge/Burn behaviour you are used to:
Courtesy of Mark Hamburg, verified and posted by Chad Baker:
To create a new Color Dodge/Burn layer that will work like the old ones used to, simply Option (Alt) click the New Layer icon and select Color Dodge/Burn as your mode, then check the box to fill your new layer with a neutral color (black for Color Dodge and Difference, white for Color Burn).
To fix an existing Color Dodge/Burn layer (from one of your 5.5 files for example) that has 100% layer opacity, simply bring up the fill dialog with that layer selected, then fill the layer in 'Behind' mode with black.
To fix an existing Color Dodge/Burn layer that has an opacity of other than 100% it's a little trickier, but not much. The process is the same as above, but you must perform a quick trick first. Select the layer, then go to Layer>Layer Style>Blending Options. What you need to do is change the Advanced blending opacity to whatever your General blending opacity is, then move the general opacity up to 100%. Now all you have to do is what you did before, fill the layer in 'Behind' mode with black.

  • Changing from Data to Audio disc burn

I can't change from a data disc burn to audio. I have gone throught the preferences to burn tab. It doesn't have an OK button.Once I close the window it goes back to data burn. Their is NO burn button in the upper right hand corner of the Itunes window only a data burn in the botton right corner.

I'd suggest you try posting in the iTunes for Windows forum. You'll be more likely to get help there than you will here in the iTunes for Mac forum.
    Good luck.
