Okay, as I'm working through this I see that I have to add the "Admin" account to each file with "read only" permission. Simply changing the "everyone" account access does nothing.
So how do I change the permissions settings in iPhoto or Aperture to give each exported file the desired permissions? I cannot locate a setting in the iPhoto or Aperture applications.
Also, I added a password to the user account. It did not change how files are output.

Hello all,
Can anyone help me in moving my pictures out of Aperture 3 and into iPhoto? It was fairly simply to move them over into Aperture however I can't seem to work out how to do the reverse.
Also I currently have iPhoto '08 but will be shortly purchasing iPhoto '11 from the App Store. Till this happens I assume some photo's which were taken on my Canon 550d won't show up? Aperture and iPhoto are entirely different applications that work in very different ways.
iPhoto has no knowledge of, and knows nothing of how the Aperture Library works. It cannot read the Aperture library. So,
1. Export all your Masters
2. Export all your Versions
You can write the metadata to the files on export - check out the Export presets. Note that you cannot export Faces. There is no convention for sharing Faces. The best you can do is use Faces as a basis for keywording.
Import them into iPhoto. Note that there is no way to associate the masters with the versions in iPhoto, so you'll have apparent duplicates.
I assume some photo's which were taken on my Canon 550d won't show up? And it will show a blank picture instead?

Problem Importing to Aperture from iPhoto
I have already imported the entire iPhoto Library to Aperture, but several images are missing. I now want to import the missing images from iPhoto to Aperture. The Aperture Manual states that, in Aperture, I should be able to open the iPhoto Browser by using File>Import>iPhoto Browser, but when I go File>Import I do not get the iPhoto Browser option. How can I select specific images in iPhoto to import into Aperture?

Some parts of the manual need updating. The iPhoto browser has been discontinued, when the unified Aperture-iPhoto library has been introduced.
If you want to import selectively from iPhoto, open your iPhoto library in Aperture and create an album;
add the images you want to use in Aperture to that album
then select the album in the Info panel and export this album as a new Aperture library. File > Export > Album as library.
Switch to your main Aperture library (File > Switcch to Library) and import the small library with the iPhoto album.

Added: You could also simply open iPhoto on the iPhoto Library and Aperture on the main Aperture library and drag the photos you want from the iPhoto window to a project in Aperture. But that will only give you the current jpeg versions, not the original files as well. -
I'm still trying to point out a location in an imovie with an arrow. I thought I might be able to insert an arrow in a still photo from the imovie and then reinsert the photo in the movie but my attempts at capturing a still frame from a video in imovie or iphoto haven't worked so far. Any ideas any one???
First, get an app called MPEG Streamclip, which is free. You can find it by googling MPEG Streamclip Squared 5.
Open MPEG Streamclip.
In iMovie, select the clip you need. Then, right-click/Reveal in Finder.
Drag this clip into MPEG Streamclip
In MPEG Streamclip, move the playhead to the frame you want.
In MPEG Streamclip, click FILE/EXPORT FRAME.
Choose JPEG, TIFF, or PNG and give it a name.

I have iPhoto 11 installed on my MacBook. I am now unable to import new photos using USB or by plugging the camera directly into the laptop. Never had that probem before with this camera. Perhaps just reinstall iPhoto from the iLife disk?Hello Terence,
Okay I will try reformating the camera's card. However all is well when I export photos to my iMac at home or onto my iPad.
If your suggestion does not work should I try reinstalling iPhoto from the iLife disk? If so, how do I go about doing that or is there a website somewhere explaining this?

I'm not really a computer guy. I just got a Kodak"easy share" camera. When I import the photos they go to the section with my name in a folder. How do I get them from there to iphoto, or better yet, how can i import them directly to iphoto?? As stated, I'm not knowledgable,have an imac and need real rudimentary direction.
in the iPhoto preferences be sure the action when camera is connected is open iPhoto
What program are you using to import the photos?
If they are in a folder you can drag that folder onto the iPhoto icon in the dock to import - our launch iPhoto and under the file menu import from that folder

Adobe DNG files not supported in Aperture 3.1.2?
Those of you that follow this forum may have read my previous post - https://discussions.apple.com/message/15009745#15009745 - about RAW files from my old Windows machine whice look fine in iPhoto, but when I imported my iPhoto library into Aperture 3 they have this red haze over them like a flash coloured gel.
As I said, the older files came from my old Windows machine, where they had been stored in Photoshop Elements, and in the past I had converted them from Canon's .CRW file format to Adobe's .DNG format. I've just checked in Aperture, and it is indeed only these which are washed out - all of the Canon .CRW files look fine, it's the Adobe .DNG files which are a mess. I'll hazard a guess that Aperture doesn't support the Adobe .DNG format I have and that is the issue, but why they are supported in iPhoto and no the professional app I can't imagine. A call to Apple tomorrow morning is in order to sort this one out I think unless any of this excellent forum's followers can offer help. Has anyone had a similar experience importing .DNG files into Aperture 3? I should add that they bad either form the original import from iPhoto, or directly importing into Aperture.

As I said in the post this provides some useful background information, but I can't imagine that iPhoto uses a better DNG converter than Aperture (although perhaps older, so maybe that's why I can see the files okay in iPhto and not Aperture?). As for my OS, it's the latest version, I've done two software update checks this week so would for sure have run that when it came around, but I appreciate yours and others thinking on this problem of mine. -
How do I not import RAW files into iPhoto
I shoot RAW + Jpeg with my cameras... Up until a recent upgrade to Mavericks... I would put the SD card in the iMac and it would import all the JPEGs, and then say something like 75 files could not be downloaded.
Those were the large RAW files and I would then just move them to an External Hard-drive and use Lightroom and Canon's DPP to edit them.
After the OS upgrade the RAW and JPEGs now both import into iPhoto and onto the Mac Hard-drive.
I can't seem to find a way to not import the RAW file into iPhoto. Is there something I am missing? I do not want those large RAW files wasting space on the mac, and I have notice iPhoto is really slow since the upgrade.

Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
B. iPhoto and Raw
1. The Raw processing engine in iPhoto the same one used in Aperture, but with less fine control. (Think of the differences between Word and TextEdit, iMovie and Final Cut).
2. Processing Raw in a 3rd Party Application
You can also process your Raw with a 3rd Party app like ACR or Photoshop. But iPhoto does not handle this gracefully and it's a bit of a kludge.
First off set your preferred app as an external editor in iPhoto:
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
Note that iPhoto sends a copy+ of the file to Photoshop, so when you save be sure to use the Save command, not Save As... If you use Save As then you're creating a new file and iPhoto has no way of knowing about this new file. iPhoto is preserving your original anyway.
Next: In the iPhoto Preferences -> Advanced, elect to use Raw with your External editor:
Now when you go to edit the Raw it will be sent to your external editor.
Now for the kludge:
You cannot save a Raw. The work you do must be output to a new file, in a new format (jepg, tiff, whatever). However, as the External Editor is making this new file iPhoto has no knowledge of its existence. Therefore you must save it to the desktop and then import it back to iPhoto as a new file.
This means that you will have your Original Raw and the processed version in iPhoto but they will not be recognised as version and original. iPhoto will see them as two separate shots.
Further - and this is quite a consideration: Lightroom is not an editor. Like iPhoto it's a database app and images need to be imported, processed and exported from it. It occupies the same place in the workflow (manager/non-destructive processing) as iPhoto does so in makes zero sense to use both...

I've imported several hundred RAW files from my Canon T2i into iPhoto and when I went to open them in Photoshop Elements they are JPG files (new to Mac, switched from Windows). When I select an individual photo and select show extended photo info it says it is a CR2 file and 7.9MB (a RAW file). I've read many threads but my question is: Has all the data from the RAW file been lost and it's now compressed into a JPG file or can I somewho get that file back to it's original RAW format with all of it's info? And if I can, how??

KristyNo data has been lost. Your Raw files are unchanged in any way. This is a bit long but it might help explain things.
Processing Raw in iPhoto
When you import a Raw to iPhoto it automatically makes a jpeg Preview of the shot. Currently, this is what you re sending to Photoshop - read on.
Why? Because you can't do anything with Raw - can't print it, share it online, use it in other apps etc. So to allow you to use the file immediately the Preview is available.
You can, however, also process the Raw in iPhoto simply by editing it. The Raw processing engine in iPhoto the same one used in Aperture, but with less fine control. (Think of the differences between Word and TextEdit, iMovie and Final Cut). The output from the processing then replaces the preview.
You can choose to save your output as either jpeg or tiff in the iPhoto Preferences.
When you are processing Raw in iPhoto you will see the Raw badge on the bottom of the iPhoto Window

Advantages/Disadvantages of Aperture over iPhoto '08??
Ok, so iPhoto '08 made and its web galleries feature makes me happy, and I finally migrated all my images over to iPhoto.
But I've owned Aperture since day 1, and am wondering if there is any advantage/disadvantage to converting to Aperture over iPhoto '08? I'm sitting at approximately 14,000 images in 350 events. Not huge I know.
Bascially I want to know which is faster really, but any other pros/cons is helpful.Tom,

To me, the big thing that sets Aperture (and it's cousin Lightroom) apart from every other imaging tool is real-time raw conversion and non-destructive editing. iPhoto converts your raw file to a JPEG or TIFF, and you then perform adjustments on this file. So you have at least your original and your edited version as full-resolution on your disk. This has obvious disk space and undo limitations.
Aperture displays a rendered version of your raw files with the adjustments applied in real time. So if you applied too much sharpening in retrospect, you simply back off the sharpening control, and the image instantly shows the impact of the new setting. The same holds true with all the other controls. Since each adjustment starts from the original raw file, you never loose information due to clipping, rounding errors, JPEG's lossy compression, etc. It also means that there's only your original capture plus a few KB for the adjustment information on disk.
Aperture provides a much more powerful metadata system than iPhoto that can be useful for organizing and searching your photos.
That said, I use iPhoto on occasion for making greeting cards.

Multiple users: aperture into iphoto
Here's my dilemma. My wife and I have separate accounts on the imac. I use aperture b/c I'm a hobbyist (raw, lots of photos, etc.). She is going to use iPhoto b/c that's all she needs. I know in my account, I can open iPhoto, and open my aperture library to drag photos into iphoto. I'd like for my wife to be able to do this so she can take what photos she wants from the "master library" and create her own world of photos (for facebook, email, etc.) in iphoto. But, she's on her own account and my library is on mine.
I don't want to duplicate my aperture library (b/c I'll always be adding to it, so she'd never get to the latest photos). Should I share it? If it's shared, and she never uses aperture in her profile, will the "open aperture library" in her iphoto still give her the latest library?

I was in exactly the same position as you a few months ago and tried lots of different ways to accomplish what you are trying to accomplish .. and eventually just gave up. Aperture and iPhoto just don't work well together, especially under two different user accounts.
Of all the permutations of ways of trying to share things, I found the best solution was just to simply import the photos twice from the camera .. once for me into Aperture, then again for her into iPhoto.
I found no better way. -

The suggested way to replace netscape.ldap package is to use only JNDI calls, but maybe they can not fulfill all your needs.
By the way, you can get the source code for that package in Mozilla.org site.
(Note: if you are using Netscape LDAP SDK for parsing/generating ASN.1 streams including X.509 certificates, try using BouncyCastle instead of netscape.ldap.ber.stream package - I had to modify several classes from Netscape's package that is not meant to handle certificates, but LDAP streams...) -
I imported some 24P HD videos from my DSLR to Aperture but these videos do not show up in iMovie '09 for editing purposes. Although my previous 24P HD Videos from iPhoto '09 show up. Why can't I access these videos stored in Aperture library? I assumed that like the videos in iPhoto, I would be able to access the videos in Aperture through iMovie. Come on Apple! I am starting to get frustrated with your products here. And this is saying a lot when I have been using and loving apple products for the last 4 years.
Hi. My camera is a Canon 600D. And yes my videos are stored in the Aperture library and they are not referenced. Even then I tried to select all the videos in Aperture and clicked 'consolidate masters' and there was a messge that said all 'none of the files are referenced',... so they didn't need consolidating.
I also tried preferences> export> external video editor > choose > iMovie. And then right click on the video to edit with imovie. Even then the video didn't show up in iMovie. It seems like the only option for me is to import the videos directly to iMovie which means there will be two versions of the same file stored in my computer eating up space.

Aperture Video Import Problem - from Lumix GH4: Imported clips have their dates changed to the import date. The files show up on the hard drive with import date not created date, but many of these same files are not showing up in Aperture. Sometimes the clips actually show up with the current import but take on the video information from a previously imported file.
It was suggested I move this question to IPhoto or IMovie which I did.
Well moving to a different discussion group did not provide an answer to this question either. But what I finally did was import one batch of photos and videos into IPhoto for a given day at a time. Working with these I could change the date and times in order to get them in the original sequench taken. Then I would create an album with that batch. These would all be on the same day (IMove was closed for this phase). Then I would open IMovie, generate the thumbnails for that album, and select the album I had created. This was necessary because the importing process in IPhoto was using incorrect dates for my video so it was a real struggle finding them in IMove until I developed this approach.
I believe that this whole process was so screwy because I was importing from an external hard drive not a camera. I had these photos on a PC and did not have the original cameras to use to import directly which I am fairly sure would have made this easier! -
Using a SDHC card adapter I can import directly on my iPad2 videos (.mov) taken with a Panasonic DMC-ZS3. The same video files (same file format) imported in Aperture 3.3 cannot be synchronized with iPad. Is Aperture causing the problem?
Oh, baby! This bad boy flies!! Here's what to expect:
I had 40,000 images in Aperture 3 and it was dog slow at everything. I installed 3.1 update today. It took 5 minutes to update the database and then behaved marginally better than before at ASIC library navigation. I was disappointed.
Then I QUIT the app. It took a couple of hours to "update files for sharing" with a counter that went to 110,000 images. So it must have updated every thumbnail and variation of preview. Turned it back on , and BAM. Came up fully in seconds. Paused for 10 seconds ten everything was lickrty split. For the first time ever, I can use the Projects view with all 791 projects and scroll quickly. I even put it in photos modevand whipped thru all 49,000 images!
Haven't done anybprocessing yet, but i'm liking it!!

Inability to accept avi files in Version 9.
I run Version 9 of Premiere Elements. My camera records in avi. Elements does not import so that I can make one movie from 12 ndividual files.
