Shortcut to Toggle Auto-Complete

I find auto-completion of metadata text quite useful when entering location data, sometimes useful in keyword input, and really a pain for Titles, which tend to be unique.
(It doesn't seem to be used for captions at all.)
I know there are already a BUNCH of keyword shortcuts, but here is a request for adding another to the list: A simple keyword Shortcut to toggle Auto-completion of Metadata entry on and off.
P.S. Another thing that this request brings to mind is: why not have the ability to let the users define some simple key combinations?

Only been requested forever. Maybe for V3.0 or something. Still low on th epriority list for ,any, I feel sure.

• Move Tool: Toggle auto select shortcut changed

The changed shortcuts to toggle the autoselection of layers with the move tool selected is highly frustrating to me. I used to have a great workflow with auto select turned on and used cmd to drag elements that were either off-canvas or too small / too transparent to grab them.
I used to have good time moving layers with Command hold, now holding Cmd toggles Layer/Group selection
How can I change it to previous behaviour?

Before:
You really only needed to uncheck Auto-select when you wanted to use the layser stack to make your selection on what to move. This could be useful, especially if you had lots overlapping layers but in most web-design workflows was rather an exception than the rule.
Holding down CTRL while in another tool, such as the Brush or Selection Rectangle or Lasso temporarily enabled the Move-Tool in whatever mode you had last set it when in the tool. That is similar in behaviour displayed by the color picker tool, which has several different picker modes that can be set with the tool active and that are applied when the temporary picker is used (by pressing ALT while using most tools that deals with pixel manipulation like the Brush and Pencil Tool ).
Now:
In Move Tool, Auto-Select Checked
Holding Down CTRL will switch selection mode from Layer to Group and vice versa.
In Move Tool, Auto-Select Unchecked
Holding Down CTRL will toggle Auto-Select On and Off
Releasing CTRL will revert to non-Auto-Select-Mode where you can move stuff around regardless on where you click in the workspace. So basically this is like it was before, only inverted.
And here comes the catch, these are all possible scenariosthat can occur with the Move-Tools settings:
Outside Move-Tool, Auto-Select Checked, Layer-Selection Mode active
CTRL will still activate the Move-Tool, but it will invoke the Group-Selection
Outside Move-Tool, Auto-Select Checked, Group-Selection Mode active
CTRL will activate the Move-Tool and will invoke the Layer-Selection. This feels as it was before.
Outside Move-Tool, Auto-Select Unchecked, Layer-Selection Mode active
will activate the Move-Tool and will invoke the Layer-Selection.
Outside Move-Tool, Auto-Select Unchecked, Group-Selection Mode active
will activate the Move-Tool and will invoke the Layer-Selection.
And this interrelation of behaviours is, what causes the problem. You need different settings for the Move-Tool to get the same action out of the temporary Move-Tool that you would get from the ragular Move-Tool.
I see what they were shooting for with this change. The new functionality is not unusable, but it has flaws that interrupt a workflow that many users rely on.
A compromise might be reached, by assigning the Layer/Group Toggle to another Function-Key combination like CTRL+ALT.
In the meantime, please do as you promised: roll back this change and re-introduce it, once the flaws have been ironed out. If I remember correctly, one of the often mentioned advantages of the Creative Cloud-model was the rapidity of updates. It is now up to you to make good on that claim. Please do.

• How do I add Auto Complete and how in the world do I get searches to open in a new page.

I just downloaded FireFox and need help with two things.
One how do I get auto complete in FireFox. The download has removed this feature in my Google toolbar.???
and two how do I get the searches set to open in a new window. I do not like tab browsing.
I went to tools and checked the box to open new windows in a new tab, but i don't see this happening. Maybe I am just assuming that this is the right setting to select.
I just want my searches to open in a new window, not in the same window or tab.
I have Firefox, Google, Bing and Norton search bars. I need all 4 in my business.
Before the download I was at least able to get Google, Bing and Norton to open in new windows but now they are not. Nothing from any of the search bars will open in a new window

Did you install the Google Toolbar for Firefox? It has its' own autofill setup, separate from the rudimentary "form fill" that Firefox has. It also has its' own Searchbar, with its' own settings..
If you are talking about having searches from the Firefox Search Bar open in a new Tab. There is no setting for opening a search in a new window. <br />
Type about:config in the URL bar and hit Enter. <br />
If you see the warning, you can confirm that you want to access that page. <br />
Filter = browser.search.openintab = double-click that preference to toggle it to true, then restart Firefox

• Auto completion in number 3.0.1

even in numbers 3.0.1 upgrade the auto completion is missing, will they give an upgarade or is it hidden or am i overlooking something for the same.

Hi deva0000,
According to this support document "autocomplete text in cells" is scheduled to be added back in sometime in the coming months.  It's not in 3.0.1.
Even after it is brought back, you might consider formatting the cells in the column as Pop-Up Menu if you frequently enter repeating values in a column and don't want to type the same text over and over again.
In many situations, particularly if you are worried about typos, Pop-Up Menu has clear advantages over "autocomplete" anyway.  It is much enhanced over what it was in Numbers 2.3, and is very easy to set up:
Select the whole column or a range of cells before formatting as Pop-Up Menu and your existing values in that column or range will pre-populate a menu automatically:
Then you can remove the values you don't want in the list, such as the column header (and possibly some previous spelling errors too!):
And after this easy one-time setup all you have to do thereafter is to choose from the pop-up list when you add rows:
See this post for more details on how this feature has been enhanced in Numbers 3.0.
In Numbers 3.0 there is no keyboard shortcut to activate the menu such as hitting the spacebar in the old Numbers (hope they'll add one in upcoming versions) but the Pop-Up Menu approach has some advantages over autocompletion: no spelling errors or lack of capitalization when there should be capitalization, etc.
And should you ever want to take your Numbers with you, in a touch interface pop-ups are much more efficient than typing the first few letters of items. You can scroll with ease through a list of dozens of items to make a pick.
See this thread for this and other workarounds for Numbers 3.0.

• No auto-complete, correct, or spell check

Just gettin started with my TouchPad, but I can't seem to get any typing functions to work.  There is no spell checking, no auto-complete, and no auto-correct (e.g. "you" for "u").  I have enabled everything I can find.  What am I missing?  My software updated itself yesterday so I am hopefully running the latest, but still nothing.
Post relates to: HP TouchPad (WiFi)

When I open Text Assist options, then "edit user dictionary", there is a tab for shortcuts, which are essentially user-defined auto-corrections, like you for u, or I'm for im, etc.  There were several already in there and I added my own.  They don't work either.

• How to remove entries from the new auto-complete ?

Firefox 33 came with a new auto-complete for forms. Unfortunately I cannot seem to delete the auto-complete suggestions once they have been stored. This is necessary functionality for things like mis-spelled words, where you want to get rid of the old (bad) auto-complete entry, or where username was changed on a form, etc. With the older versions, you could just press delete key on highlighted auto-complete suggestion and it would be removed, but this functionality does not work with the new auto-complete. The only workaround I have been able to find so far is to clear the browser history for the last 1 hour, but that wipes out good history as well as the error.

Hello,
Can you try Firefox Safe Mode and see if you have the same problem there? Firefox Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode that turns off some settings, disables most add-ons (extensions and themes).
If Firefox is open, you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu:
*Click the menu button , click Help and select Restart with Add-ons Disabled.
If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:
* On Windows: Hold the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
When the Firefox Safe Mode window appears, select "Start in Safe Mode".<br>

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article to find the cause.
To exit Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.
When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help others with the same problem.

• 2.1 EA1 - Auto-complete less responsive

I've noticed that when typing select statements with 2.1, that the auto-complete popup is less responsive as compared to previous releases. Even with something like:
select * from s
...will sometimes give me a list of tables/users begining with s...needing the shortcut key to display results. And rather than zeroing in on potential results as I continue to type, the auto complete window goes away.
select * from sy
produces no popup, but still shows popup with ctrl-space. Once I get the full owner and period in there, it the auto complete window will come up again (sometimes only with aid of shortcut key again)...
select * from sys.
Rather than narrow down on views as I type, the results go away....even with the shortcut key
select * from sys.d
gives me no popup and none with the shortcut key. Prior versions I'd at least get (dual, dba_views, etc), and it would almost continually narrow down results as I typed.

Fixed broken synonyms query which logged the error.
Code insight no longer holds the GUI thread, therefore if it is unable to list suggestions in some time threshold (0.6 sec), then nothing is displayed. However, if you explicitly invoked code insight (with ctrl-space), then the threshold is considerably higher (3 sec). Please keep in mind that the goal to have all code insight dictionary queries under 0.5 sec remains elusive (because of dictionary complexity).
There are some other changes in 2.1. Code insight is no longer zeroing in on potential results. Consider
select * from apps.<ctrl space>
the list would be thousands items long! In situation like this code insight runs top 50 query, and fetches only the first 50 items of each category. (This also helps performance). Narrowing down the list of top 50 items is going to confuse the user, this is why we don't do it anymore, and retrigger the whole query. Perhaps, this magic number "50" should be configurable... One of the reasons why code insight in 1.5 sometimes was little faster because this limit was set to "20".

• Text-input component with auto-complete functionality for mobile

Hey guys,
I wonder if there is a text-input component with auto-complete functionality optimized for mobile development with AIR like the one that Android provides natively as you can see here http://developer.android.com/reference/android/widget/AutoCompleteTextView.html and here http://developer.android.com/resources/tutorials/views/hello-autocomplete.html.
At least I didn't find it in the latest SDK and I think such a component is pretty standard nowadays. Or did I simply overlook it?
Thank you guys for any advice.
Regards,
Thilo

Hi relaxtraja,
thanks for your reply!
I knew that there are a lot of auto-complete scripts on the web. What I was hoping was, that Adobe provides an officially supported auto-complete component optimized for mobile as part of the SDK (like in the Android SDK as I pointed out), but that doesn't seem to be the case. It's sad, because it's an essential part of modern UIs in mobile applications.
I've already created an auto-complete component by myself based on Spark components and I will end up using it. But I will have to optimize it for mobile applications beforehands. I just think something this essential should be provided by the SDK.
However, thanks for posting!
Regards,
Thilo

Heya Waleed,
I use spry to create an autocomplete form that works great across browsers that have javascript enabled. You can store info in a database and parse the info to xml for a dynamic approach. Take a look at the filter examples in spry.

• How to delete the existing list and prevent auto-completed web sites?

Hi, As soon as I start to type "www" in the address bar, a list of previously visited web sites appears, as if auto-completed. They seem rather random, and not necessarily the most recent ones. I have tried resetting Safari, deleting the cache, looking these sites up in the various plist folders in the Library, using Safari in Private mode, etc. but it still happens. I find it a nuisance.
How do I delete the existing sites, and how do I prevent more from appearing in the future?
Thanks,
Richard

HI,
Go to Safari/Preferences - AutoFill
Click where it says: Edit
You can Remove All or edit which url's you don't want.

• How to delete old addresses that appear in auto complete list in iMessage

Mavericks 10.9.1
iMessage Version 8.0 (4218)
MBP Late 2011
When typing in the name of a contact I want to message, a list of addresses appears as an auto-complete/auto-fill list.
One address is no longer used and I would like to delete that particular address.
The address is not on the contact card.
I'm sending a message via iMessage to another iMessage verified address on an Apple device(s).
My iCloud contacts are synced correctly with iphone/ipad/MBP.
Thanks

First, search Contacts to make sure the address doesn't appear on any card. If it doesn't, continue.
Back up all data.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
~/Library/Containers/com.apple.iChat
Right-click or control-click the line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item selected. Quit the application if it's running. Move the selected item to the Trash. Relaunch the application and test.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

• How can i delete all the "auto complete" addresses on my iPad mail

I want to give my old iPad 1 to a relative . I'd like to leave all the apps for her but not all the "auto complete" contacts which appear when I use the Mail function. These names are not on "contacts" and seem to have been accumulated from mails I have sent/received over the years. is there a way to just delete these without doing a complete delete of everything on the iPad?

Yes, but it is very tedious. You will have to begin typing an email address in the To: field in order to bring up those suggested email addresses. Then you tap the blue "I" next to the email address. In the next window that appears, swipe down to Remove from Recents and tap that to delete the address. You would have to do this for every single email address that you have ever received an email from, that is not in your contacts app.
But what I am curious about is why wouldn't you remove your email accounts from the iPad? That will eliminate the problem altogether. You don't want to give the iPad to your relative that way, do you?
