Should I bother to upgrade my wireless card ?

I have read several posts here which have observed that the aluminum 15" powerbooks (mine is 1.33 mHz) generally do not receive good wireless reception compared to other Powerbooks. I have also observed several references to web venders for replacement of original the airport extreme cards. My question is addressed to those in a similiar situation (having an aluminum powerbook), or those who have knowledge of the aluminum considerations:
... has replacing the Airport Extreme card made a noticeable improvement in the range of your wireless reception ( ie. is it worth the money... or, is it time to consider biting the bullet and buying a new computer ) ?
Thank you in advance for your consideration of this... it is hard to know what to do without knowing what others have experienced.

    Hi guys,
I recently upgraded to 50 Mbps Download (and 10 Mbps upload) home wireless internet. However, my computer does not get more then 15 mbps unless I am in the same room as the router and modem (and my house isn't even big) where it gets ussually about 30-40 Mbps while my brother can get almost 50 Mbps without being even close to the router. I even get better speedtest.com results from my ipod than I do from my iPhone! I therefor am wondering whether I should upgrade my Laptop to an i3 proccesor or if I should just upgrade my wireless card because it is super irritating how slow my internet is.
    Thanks

I saw your post regarding the problems with the wifi speed. There are a number of different factors that effect the speed. It could very well be that your brother has a better wireless card. The one that you posted isn't a wireless card, it is your Ethernet card. Check your Device Manager under Network Adapters and let me know what you have listed there. As for the processor you can't upgrade it in this model as it is part of the system board or motherboard for the notebook.

    Hi,
Are you asking about the gray and black antenna connectors?  I'd expect them to go on the way they came off the previous card.
Removal and replacement instructions are in the Hardware Maintenance Manual - ThinkPad T440s page 64.

  • Wireless Card Upgrade Help!

    Hello,
First post so be gentle with me! I need some help upgrading my wireless card on my Compaq nx6310 laptop. I have the original card in there since new and I now have a much faster fibre connection with a Hauwei HG533 wireless router so I understand if I upgrade the wireless card to an all singing all dancing 802.11 b/g/n one I can connect at a faster speed. I´m running XP Home SP3. I understand the card must be a genuine HP product or on the bios whitelist but I don´t know if one is available for my kit and where I can get one. I want the best available. I have attached some pics. of the existing one.
Thank you in advance for any help......

Since your interest is in upgrading to an802.11b\g\n wireless adapter  then you simplest solution is to purchase a  Type I, or Type II , or Type III  Cardbus wireless card.  You may have to look for that type of card in the preowned market.
The card plugs into the slot(s) on the left-hand of your notebook.
There are no internal network adapter currently made that will fit your notebook.
Your notebook is of a notebook generation when only 802.11 a\b\g existed and that  is what makes cardbus adapters your best option.

  • Satellite P75-A7200 Wireless Card Upgrade

    Hello,
I was wondering if anyone has upgraded their Wireless Card in their Satellite P75-A7200. Until I got it home, I didn't realize that it was only a single band card and doesn't support 5ghz wireless N which is all I run my network on at home for bandwidth purposes since my neighborhood is flooded with 2.4 ghz users. It appears its a simple swap to change, but I need to know if if the Antennas support 5ghz.
    According to Intel's Docs:
"Before installing Intel® wireless adapters supporting IEEE* 802.11a, verify with the laptop manufacturer that the laptop includes a 5GHz (802.11a) capable antenna..."
I was going to switch it out with a Intel Centrino Ultimate-N 6300 or Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6235 Wi-Fi plus Bluetooth
I'm just not sure about the midle antenna port that the 6300 has since the P75-A7200 only has 2 wireless
Attached is what adapter I currently have installed. (Intel Centrino Wireless-N 2230)
Any help is appreciated. I am a very technical person, so I'm not a noob at this. Thanks.

I was finally able to extract the screw very gently with a power drill and #1 screw extractor. I then installed the new card in under 15 seconds. Booted right up and I had 5gz connectivity with upwards pf 160mbps (and I'm not even close to the router). No need to update any drivers. Definitly worth the $30 investment. Thanks to priuscat for providing the information on what card to get.
Attached is exactly how the new card looks from Amazon

  • Upgrading Wireless Card in dv7-6197CA to Intel 7260HMW IEEE 802.11AC

I'm looking into upgrading my wireless card in my dv7-6197CA to something that will perform a bit better than my current wireless card.  I was looking into upgrading to a card which supports the WiFi ac standard, and saw the Intel 7260HMW IEEE 802.11AC.  During my research I've heard something about only certain wireless cards being compatiable with HP laptops due to a whitelist.  My question is, will the Intel 7260HMW IEEE 802.11AC be compatiable with my model of laptop?  Thanks in advance!

Only wifi cards offered by HP on your model are sure to work and it has to be a wifi card bearing an HP Spares Part number or yes, the whiltelist will jump up and bite you. I am not aware of HP's offering any 802.11ac wifi cards yet.

  • Pavilion dv6 - 2090er - upgrade wireless card "b/g" to "n".

I have HP Pavilion dv6 - 2090er and I 'd like to upgrade my wireless card "b/g" to "n". What a model of wireless card is compatible to my system

    Hi:
Below is the link to the service manual for your notebook.
    http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01860375.pdf
Supported wireless cards can be found in Chapter 3, starting on page 3-6.
If I were you, I would get the Broadcom 4322AGN 802.11a/b/g/n WiFi Adapter with the applicable HP part # depending on what country you live in.
That is a dual band (2.5/5.0 GHz card).
You must get the card with the HP part # on it, or it will not work.
I like to get used but tested and working cards on eBay. So a search by the part number.
Or you can order new from HP at the link below.

  • Wireless Card Not working

i have a satellite l305d-s5914.  when i turn on the wireless internet the light doesn't turn on and it doesn't pick up any signal.  the diagnostics said it doesn't have the right drivers but another test said it did.  any help would be appreciated.  thanks.

The wireless card should be there, but if the drivers are not installed or the wireless antenna switch is not on, you're not going to connect wirelessly. Go to Control Panel. Click on Device Manager. Click on the icon just to the left of Network Adaptors. You should see both the wired and wireless network adaptors. No red 'X's, yellow '?' or anything on the wireless card. If the wireless card is not there, Windows is not seeing. And if there is a red 'X' , the wireless card has been disabled. And the yellow '?' means that the wrong driver was installed.
You can also disable the wireless card and turn off the wireless antenna by doing an FN-F8 key combination. The same key combination will toggle the wireless on too. With the wireless antenna switch in the on position, do the FN-F8 combination to get the wireless LED back on. Normally that LED is an orange/amber.

  • Can WRT54G connect 2 XP laptops with different wireless cards, i.e. b and g,?

My WRT54G router works fine with a lenovo windows laptop (Intel wireless 3945ABG card) and my dell linux box but it is not accepting my old T40 laptop which has a dual-band wireless a/b card.   The WRT54G box indicates this router accepts both b and g wireless cards.
Question is can this router  simultaneously  hookup these 2 laptops  or do I have to resetup the router in order for it to work on the T40?
as it is now, the wireless network shows on my T40 and it appears to 'take' the access key i input but then the T40 just 'hangs' trying to get into that network.   I have set the encryption key on the router to WPA. and i want to keep this.

Make sure the computer that can't connect has DHCP enabled, Update the computer wireless card drivers, Check that the security you entered is correct.

  • G62 Notebook wireless card replacement?

    Hi all,
I've got a HP G62-18sa notebook with the standard RT3090 wifi+bluetooth combo card in and I was wondering if I can replace it at all? I've been looking at this card http://is.gd/nNjsK8
Reason I'm asking is the RT3090 card has very, VERY bad support for Linux and I'm looking to replace it. If the above card won't fit can anyone suggest ones that might fit and work under Linux?
    Many thanks.

    Hi,
There are 2 compatible wifi/bth cards for your laptop, the Ralink and a Broadcom 4313. I would suggest to disable the whitelist (list of the compatible components) in the BIOS and after that you may use the Intel 6230 combo card (any wireless card you want) without problems..
    http://forums.mydigitallife.info/threads/20223-Remove-whitelist-check-add-ID-s-to-break-hardware-res...
I have disabled the whitelist myself and upgraded the wireless card to an Intel Ultimate-N 6300 450Mbps. It's not the best solution but works. I also use linux and Intel wireless cards have the best support, like HP printers..

    Hello
    > I am not happy with my integrated Realtek wireless card. Connection quality is not good.
I cant imagine that you are not satisfied with the connection quality
I also use Satellite A660 for October 2010 and everything is great! :) This is a wonderful piece of hardware without any problems and great build quality.
The WLAN connectivity is good and the same with other notebooks (I also have Realtek WLAN card). I only noticed that WLAN connection is a little bit slower in Eco mode so I have disabled the WLAN power saving function in Eco mode and now the problem is solved. Furthermore I have installed newest WLAN driver of offical Toshiba page..
So I would recommend disabling the WLAN power saving and updating the WLAN driver.
Of course you can use an external USB adapter but I think internal WLAN is more comfortable so I would try it with driver update firstly. ;)

  • N500 Wireless card upgrade?

    Hello and welcome,
Lenovo laptops use a BIOS whitelist.  Wifi cards have to have a Lenovo FRU number - which means they've been modified to meet the whitelist requirements.  In other words, a generic Intel 5100 won't pass, but a 5100 with FRU 43Y6493 should.  Reputable vendors will list the FRU if a board is Lenovo-compatible.
The Hardware Maintenance Manual and the BIOS readme are the best references for what's compatible with your machine.  From the HMM:
    Intel WiFi Link 5100 v 4233-CTO, 32x, 33x, 34x, 35x, 36x, 37x, 38x, 39x, 3Ax, 3Bx, 3Cx, 3Dx, 3Ex
    43Y6493

  • Satellite P10-804 wireless card upgrade

    Hi,
Ive been trying to find a list of compatible wireless cards to upgrade my Satellite P10-804 but can't find any.
The the current wireless card is a Toshiba PA3171U-1MPC but it doesnt do the 802.11G standard and no WPA security.
Anyone know of what are good replacement cards that will work on my laptop?
Ive come across this one but Im not sure if it is compatible or not as I can't find any compatibility info for it: PA3416U-1MPC
    Thanks,
    Mark

    Hi
I think the PA3416U-1MPC should be compatible.
I mean the notebook supports the miniPCI Wlan card and the PA3416U-1MPC is a miniPCI Wlan card.
The WLan antenna behind the notebooks screen should be connected to the connectors placed on miniPCI WLan card.
The two connectors are marked with MAIN and AUX. Normally a white cable goes to the MAIN and a black to the AUX

  • Upgrade wireless card for DV6-6B26US....

I have two Hp laptops that are used for work. One is a HP Pavilion DV6-6B26US and the other is a HP Pavilion G4-1215dx.
Recently our employer informed us that company network upgrades will require laptops to have dual band (2.4 & 5 GHz) wireless cards (as the are blocking 2.4 GHz bands in selected locations).
I initially attempted to upgrade the HP Pavilion G4-1215DX with an Intel Centrino 6235 Advanced WiFi card and found that the BIOS contained a whitelist preventing use of the Intel card. I was able to find and order a suitable replacment listed in the service guide for the laptop:
    Realtek 8188BC8 802.11a/b/g/n 2×2 WiFi and Bluetooth 3.0+HS Combo Adapter  (602993-001)
I cannot, however, find a suitable dual band wireless card listed in the service guide for the HP Pavilion DV6-6B26US. I need to know if a whitelist is employed in the bios for this machine, and if so, which dual band wireless card would be comapatible with this machine?
Alternatively, is there a BIOS avaiable for this machine (or both machines) that does not employ whitelisting of wireless cards?
    Thank you,
    Patrick

    Hi,
Unfortunately the whitelist is still present in this model series (Dv6-6000). I haven't been able to find any compatible dual band wireless card because all wifi chips from the manual are only 1x1. Have you tried the Realtek 8188 on a 5Ghz network? I don't think that it's a dual band wireless card..
