Show hidden folders

Hi;
I am trying to get my iPod Touch backup on an external drive, but the folder is hidden. How do I show hidden folders? (new to Mac)
Thank you.

To show hidden folders on your mac, open terminal and type (or copy/paste):
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles -bool true
To hide the hidden folders change the true to false. Hope this helps!

  • Catalog Tree doesn't show hidden folders

    Hi,
I have set some folders in the presentation catalog to 'hidden' to hide from all users but for some roles Administrators & Authors I have permissioned the 'Show hidden items' privilege so they can see the folders. Both the Administrators & Authors can create new Analysis & dashboard prompts and see the hidden folders. However when i create a new dashboard and attempt to add content the hidden folders are not shown in the Catalog tree on the left hand side when in edit dashboard mode.
    Is this an known issue?
    Any help would be great

    Hi Veeravalli
I have tested it for an Administrator user and an Author user and the same issue applies (i.e. can't see the hidden folders in the catalog tree in dashboard edit mode)
    I'm running 11.1.1.6.1 on Linux 64
    Thanks

My Samsung external hd does not show its folders on MAC. It runs sometimes at Windows systems. I hadl already tried to configure to show hidden folders, but it does not solve my problem.

    Thank you for responding.
This might sound stupid since i'm not really knowledgeable with Macs,
but since all my files were moved from my mac computer to the external hard drive,
is it possible to recover those files through my Mac - like recovering deleted files?

  • How do I get Firefox to show hidden files and folders. It should be available under help but help only gets as far as Open Containing folder and doesn't go on to show hidden files and folders

I am trying to find the status of Adobe Flash Player on my computer. I am advised that it exists in Firefox's hidden files and folders but I cannot find such a folder

You have an older version of Flash installed - Shockwave Flash 10.0 r45
You can see that for yourself in Tools > Addons > Plugins
"Show hidden files and folders" is a function of the Operating System, not an application such as Firefox. Windows Control Panel > Folder Options > View - Advanced Settings

Are the hidden folders supposed to show up when i browse my directories from within Color?

Anyone know is this is a bug and if it is will there be a fix for it soon?

Yep, they do. Color's not alone in this of course, but it does add to the clutter of navigation that's difficult enough without endless scrolling.

  • Showing/ Accessing hidden folders and files

    Hi,
In order to reinstal an application (Trend Micro sync), I first need to remove a selecion of hidden files that I used on Leopard to find under the account/library/ Application support.... They are "hidden folders and files". Under Lion I don't know how to set the finder to show them to me, especially as I don't remember the name !
    Thanks for your help

JuhOS X lists all files and flags invisible ones. Some applications let you toggle invisibility, though this doesn't take effect until you restart the Finder.
The other thing to do is verify your drive with Disk Utility. Your computer isn't likely to be suddenly deciding to hide files, but aberrant behavior could be an indicator of a corrupt drive.

  • Hide / Show hidden files & folders

I have an iMac 12,1 that I recently formatted and and gave a clean install of Yosemite. A few days ago I needed a file from a Time Machine backup from my Mac Mini. The folder it was in was hidden, so I used the following command to show the hidden folder.  ----   defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles YES , then killall Finder to restart the Finder. The hidden folder appeared up and I retrieved the files I wanted. When I type defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles NO, and restart the Finder, the files will not hide again.
I've tried restarting, repairing permissions on the drive, etc... The caveat to this is that my home folder is on another volume. I have the 250 GB SSD as the primary, but my home folder is huge, so I put it on the second internal hard drive. I think this may be the issue.  When I logon to an administrator account that has the home folder on the SSD, I can show and hide hidden folders without an issue.I tried moving my home folder back but the hidden files still showed
Is there a way to fix this without having to trash my account and start over ?

I just use the  Hidden Files widget on the dashboard, just click on it to show hidden files in Finder, and click again to rehide. Very useful.

  • How can I get Finder to show me hidden folders I know are there?

Does anyone know how to make hidden folders visible like in Windows, or if there is even a way at all?
A few weeks ago my iPod kind of crashed and I lost my library, but the files are still on it. Anyone who is familiar with Windows knows you can just goto "folder options" and make hidden folders visible, which is how you can get into your iPod to access the individual music files.
I need and want to format the iPod but can't because I need my music off of it first and I get Finder to allow me to see the hidden folders. Please help!

Since I use the Terminal frequently I use it to transfer songs that are on my iPod back to various computers. However, if you aren't used to Terminal there are better options. See this page:

  • MY system folder, including hidden folders are littered with duplicate folders and files with the suffix (from old Mac) How do I remove them

I have a Macbook Pro running Leopard 10.5.8. I had a problem with my my operating system (my fault, I moved a file I shoudnt have) couldnt boot up but was able to boot up from a backup. I managed to repair my original system except now all the system folders, including hidden folders are littered with duplicate folders and files with the suffix (from old Mac).  For the most part the dupes are an exact copy, but not always.  I want to remove them to free up space and cant imagine duplicate folders in the /system/library are not hindering my computer. But I dont know where to start and am afraid of doing irreparable damage. Any ideas

  • Mountain Lion 10.8.2 not showing big folders from External HDD, please help ?

    Hello guys,
The problem appeared after I did a clean install of Mountain Lion 10.8.2. The OS works nicely except it does not show my big Movie (around 200 GB) folder from my External HDD. This Movie folder is not related to any Apple software such as iTunes etc.. What's funny is that my LG TV shows the folder, and I can access it to open any movie. But when I mount the HDD to my MacBook Pro with Mountain Lion now, all folders are shown except this one. The HDD is NTFS and had no problems with Snow Leopard (my previous OS).
I tried defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE and I see hidden folders in External HDD, but the Movie folder is still not shown.
Is this issue related to the size of this folder ? any help & ideas are greatly appreciated, thanks!

    Hi all,
I see its been 2 months since the last post. Did someone find the solution? I have the same problem with 10.8.2 update. Macbook pro mid 2010 with Crucial 256 m4 ssd (latest firmware 010G). Since yesterday my mac refuses to start.
    What I did so far:
    1. Impossible to start os x 10.8.2, stuck at spinning circle below the apple logo at startup. Disk check ok, permissions ok. Startup in "safe mode" stucks on spinning  wheel as well.
    2. Impossible to format the drive for a new clean install. What I find strange is that I cannot format the ssd with any utility. So far I tried with windows, linux and with disk utility on os x. I put the ssd in a usb casing and I am able to read it as an external drive, can copy some smaller files from it but cannot change anything on it (no permissions).
    3. Did a clean install on original hd of my mac. Data transfer (1 user)  from time machine or the ssd goes through 85-95% then stops. And now impossible to format the original drive with the 10.8.2 installed to downgrade to 10.7.
    4. Pram reset
Does anyone have any idea what to do now?
    Thanks!

  • How to show hidden dot (".someFile") files under a specific directory

    Hello!
I came across numerous ways to show hidden files and folders in Finder via a Google search, but I don't want to open the door to an accidental screwup with important files.
However, I do want to be able to view the hidden .htaccess files in Finder in order to learn to use Apache web server modules. Is it possible to tell Finder to show me the .htaccess files only in my /htdocs directory?
    Thanks.

AFAIK the Finder is either on or off for displaying hidden files. However, there is a Contextual Menu item that may do what you want:
    http://home.online.no/~stoedle/YLS/YLS-products/FolderGlance.html
You set it up so when you control or right click on a folder it displays all the contents, including hidden files. FolderGlance is donationware.

  • Show hidden files in Finder

I've been ripping my music CDs into mp3 files using iTunes.
I recently bought an HDTV. It shows the hidden files on the flash drive as well as the visible files. When I try to play one of the hidden mp3 files, the TV tells me that the file isn't supported. Yet if I scroll to the right, the TV shows the visible mp3 files. I had to use Windows XP to show the hidden mp3 files on the flash drive so that I could delete them. After I did that, the TV displayed the visible mp3 files & played them. Today, I tried to search for hidden mp3 files on the flash drive using Finder. When I use the Terminal to show the hidden files, hidden folders are shown, but none of the hidden mp3 files are shown. Yet the hidden mp3 files are shown in Windows XP. The hidden mp3 file starts with ".01_" followed by the file name & ending with the mp3 extension. Each track starts with a different number. In other words, .01_, .02_, .03_, etc. I don't understand why I can see the hidden mp3 files in Windows XP, but not in Finder. The command "defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles YES" apparently doesn't show ALL of the files. Is it possible to change the Finder so that ALL hidden files are displayed just as I can do in Windows XP? I shouldn't have to go to my PC so that I can see the hidden files & delete them & then go back to my Mac. (Windows XP is the only PC OS that I have. I don't have Vista or 7 or 8.) Or maybe there's a Terminal command that will just rip visible mp3 files in iTunes & not both visible & hidden files. Or maybe there's software that I can install that will do that. If there's no solution, then I will have to use Windows XP to show all of the hidden mp3 files so that I can delete them all at once. I sure would rather use my Mac for everything instead of going back & forth from Mac to PC.

Perhaps I should have noted that DesktopUtility is free.  I wouldn't spend money for that functionality, either.
Me either. Didn't notice that one was free. Everything seemed to have a cost on the various apps.
I suppose that it doesn't make any difference whether I enter TRUE or YES, does it? And likewise, FALSE or NO?
Correct. True, Yes, and 1 all do the same thing.
For the opposite, False, No and 0 are the same.
I've also been told to hold down the "option" key & right-click on the Finder icon & click "relaunch". I suppose that it doesn't make any difference whether I relaunch or kill the finder, does it? If I kill the Finder, I reopen it to view the hidden files, right?
Also correct. Doesn't matter which way you do it. The Finder automatically relaunches itself whether you kill it in Terminal, or relaunch it from the Dock (which is really the same as kill then relaunch).
I did see ".DS_Store" on the Desktop, but I didn't see any of the hidden mp3 files on the flash drive.
Now that is weird. You should see all hidden files and folders on all drives. Unless the Flash drive is formatted for Windows (exFAT, FAT16 or FAT32) and OS X doesn't treat it the same way.
TinkerTool and Secrets are two more free utilities that offer easy ways to toggle hidden file viewing.
Yup, there's lots of free utilities to do the same thing. OnyX will also toggle hidden items on and off.

  • Can't hide Hidden folders and files.

    Hi All,
This past weekend I transferred my OS and apps to a newly installed SSD drive.
During the process I had to move some files around in order to get The OS and Apps on the SSD.
I used a technique that utilizes the Terminal and the chflags command.
My issue is now I can not hide the files and folders that are usually hidden.
I can't remember the exact method I used to unhide hidden folders and files. I can't even find a reference to it in my web browsers history.
I have searched on the web for solutions along these lines:
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles -boolean FALSE ; killall Finder
    chflags hidden
    sudo chflags hidden
But none of these approaches have worked.
I have downloaded Onyx, TinkerTool and Show Hide Invisible Files.
I have used them as best I understand to hide the normally hidden files and folders, but nothing has worked.
Any Command Line gurus out there have any suggestions?
    Many Thanks in Advance!
    Tem

Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
Services ▹ Show Info in Finder (or just Show Info)
from the contextual menu.* An Info dialog should open.
☞ Does the dialog show "You can read and write" in the Sharing & Permissions section?
☞ In the General section, is the box labeled Locked checked?
☞ What is the Modified date?
If you don't have read and write access to the item, change the settings as directed here. Note, however, that if one file has wrong access settings, most likely others do as well. If the item is locked, unlock it.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Open a TextEdit window and paste into it (command-V). Select the line you just pasted and continue as above.

  • Show hidden files breaks "All My Files"

I'm trying to get my AMP stack back up on a new Mountain Lion Mac, which has become a larger pain since they removed Web Sharing. First step to getting the AMP stack up was to show hidden files:
    defaults write com.apple.Finder AppleShowAllFiles YES
Then a restart of finder (option + right click Finder in dock > Restart), but this has completely killed "All My Files" showing anything. It's not like I really care about this feature of Finder, but still, just wondering if there is a different terminal command now for showing hidden files that doesn't break this. Hiding hidden files back to default does not fix "All My Files" either.
In addition, you can't double click any hidden folders, you have to right click and select "Open" or "Open Original" if it was an alias (ie etc).

    I can't reproduce the problem.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Enter "mdworker" (without the quotes) in the Filter text field. Post the messages that appear in the Console window — the text, please, not a screenshot.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Do not post many repetitions of the same message.
Some personal information, such as the names of your files, may be included — edit that out, too, but don’t remove the context.
    Step 2
Do the same with the search string "mds".
