Showing external pages in Dreamweaver 4

Hello all, I am new to this forum as well as Dreamweaver and
site building. I have the DW4/FW4 studio on windows xp. I am able
to access all of the pages on my website except for the forums
(which are php) and the photo gallery (which is coppermine). When I
click on the external.html icon in DW all that comes up is the page
with the correct background colors but no content of ant kind.

I preview it in my local broswer, the first page I want the
preview shows uo OK. When I click to link to a new page in my root
folder, the new page shows up, but not formatted with the template.
Why and how can I fix this?

Will spry show a javascript function from an external page?

I have two pages
http://www.autosnetfree.com/clock_buttonajax.php //this page has the spry calling the external page.
http://www.autosnetfree.com/clock_auction1.php //this page has a countdown clock to a future date
The buttonajax page has a submit button which updates a database with the current date plus 60 seconds.
The countdown clock page pulls that future date from the database with a recordset

Apply template to html pages in dreamweaver 2004

How do I apply a template to html pages in dreamweaver 2004?
The template has editable regoins. Will this effect it?
Why do I get an orphan message when I try to apply the
template to new pages?

You don't want to apply templates to pages. Instead use FILE
| New > Page
from Template > site name > template name, spawn a new
page, and use this
page for the content. THis is not really an issue for a brand
new page, but
if the page already has content when you apply the template,
you'll see what
I mean.
You are being confused by a) not understanding root relative
vs document
relative links, and b) not understanding how DW previews
files.
If I have a document with a link to an image that looks like
this -
<img src="/images/foo.gif"...
That's what's called a root relative link.
If I preview that document in DW, then the browser gets the
document, sees
the leading "/" and reads that as the root of the hard drive,
since the
browser has no idea where the root of the site is. Thus, the
image is
broken in the preview.
If I have temp files enabled, then DW will secretly convert
the file being
previewed into a temporary file, and hand that to the
browser. This temp
file has had all root relative links converted to document
relative links
(as you will see by looking at the code in the browser), and
has had all
include files actually embedded in the page, and has had all
external CSS
and js markup embedded in the page. In other words, DW has
made the
document into a stand-alone page.
If you do not have temp files enabled, all of these links
would be broken on
preview.
Now - if you are using root relative links, AND you have temp
files enabled,
AND you click away from the previewed document, then all of
your links will
be broken, since DW has not made that linked file into a temp
file. This is
what you are seeing.
So - if you want to click away on preview, then you must use
document
relative links for the site -
<img src="../images/foo.gif"... (for example)
These will still work on preview since the browser knows how
to determine
the current file's location and how to follow that path.

Adding keywords to a web page with Dreamweaver 8

Hi,
Does anyone of you know how to add keywords to a web page
with Dreamweaver 8? I want the link to the web page shows up when
people google the keywords. I pulled out the instructions from
ehow.com and followed the instructions by using the HTML Keywords
function in the Insert menu. I tested it on Google website by
entering the keywords but it did not work.
Any clues would be helpful.

Let's put it this way - those sites I have that are highly
ranked do not
have any meta keywords on them. So - you do the math....

Spry Data Set, include external page and javascript

I think it is a bit too late you're 'finally experimenting' with Spry.
Spry has been deprecated from Adobe and is now been made Open Source on GIT - meaning Adobe will no longer officially support Spry tools. The next major release of DW will most probably get rid of Spry, for good.

jQuery is the way ahead. You may want to switch to jQuery - since anyway you've mentioned you're just 'experimenting' at the moment. That way, you're not spending time on something that is no longer being supported/ developed by their developers.

External page opened in same window

Not sure if this is the right place for this but thought I'd try. I have a product page with a link that says options. What I want is that when the "options" link is pressed I want an external page that would be relativly small to open infront of the product page but in the same window with the product page ghosted out, much like many websites do with a photo slide show. Any direction or ideas is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Google "thickbox" for one way to do exactly this. Alternatively, there are commercial extensions for DW that will do the same - see for example http://www.projectseven.com -> LightShowMagic.

Can't view page in Dreamweaver

There is one page in Dreamweaver that doesn't show the web
page (design), only the html shows up. I have it clicked on
"split", but still nothing shows. How can I fix this? Thanks

You have several problems on that page.
For one, you call a routine in the body tag that is not
mentioned in the
javascript in the head -
<BODY BGCOLOR=#316AC5
background="../navimages/background.jpg"
ONLOAD="preloadImages();">
The code for the function named "preloadImages()" is not in
the head of the
page. What *is* there is the code for the DW function
"MM_preloadImages()",
but you do not call that one. This causes your page to throw
a javascript
error when it loads - since it cannot find the object called
"preloadImages()". The solution would be to remove that call
from the body
tag, e.g.,
<BODY BGCOLOR="#316AC5"
background="../navimages/background.jpg">
(note that proper syntax requires quotes around all attribute
values)
and then to reapply any preload that you want (I wouldn't
bother) using DW.
Your larger problem, though, is that your table structure is
broken, and DW
cannot figure out how to render it or its contents - that's
why you don't
see anything in DW. I would go through the code carefully and
find out why
DW thinks that your tables have too many cells in some rows
compared to
others - by this I mean that your cell configuration from one
row to the
next is not internally consistent throughout those inner
nested tables.

IWeb 09 photo album loses hyperlinks to external pages

I have an album of images on my site and have hyperlinked the image caption text to open videos on external pages. This always worked fine in iWeb 08, in fact the images themselves on the main album page automatically became hyperlinked, which was cool. Upgraded to 09 and published (fortunately on a temporary site and not my live site), and now whether you click on the image or the text nothing happens. If you click on an enlarged image it just forwards to the next image.
Am using Transmit to upload, uploading to my site hosted on machighway, not mobileme.
Links work fine and open when I'm in iWeb. Tried dragging the index file to the browser and the links don't work, so obviously the problem is with iWeb 09. So my request to Apple--give us a "revert/undo" command that will take our imported docs and application back to the earlier version of software while you debug AFTER product launch. I really really hope this is fixed soon with a new version because my clients expect me to upgrade my site monthly and I'm dead in the water now until Apple fixes this.

I'm right there with you, and echo bjaquez's post. I've been frustrated by the situation. Been working (2) trials/options; create an album and try to hyperlink, and create a page and try to hyperlink. First, let me give some history.
I have about 140 photos of books to put on my site's Publications Page; plan is to hyperlink each book photo to the site where it can be purchased (external link). I reviewed the import options the Help menu provides for bringing all the photos into iWeb; one option open the Media Icon at the bottom tool bar. I found the photos in my iPhoto section, selected & imported. The issue here is it imports all photos, stacked on top of each other. When I attempt to spread them out and down the new page, iWeb will not let me scroll down the page any further, even when I've expanded the rows, columns, spacing, etc.
Option 2 was to prep the photos in iPhoto, then export to iWeb as a new page. That worked great, all photos carried over, etc.
Now, regardless of how I do it, when I open the Inspector, the Hyperlink "enable" is grayed out. It will not allow me to hyperlink the photos.
I'm definitely not a Mac guru, but pretty stoked how much I've learned this past year. I think the inability to hyperlink on an Album page makes sense in some weird way (maybe it's not weird and I've got it right, anyone can let me know) because I noticed once you click on a photo, it blows up in size so you can do a slide show or see the next photo. So, I'm thinking this would override a Hyperlink ability, or if it did Hyperlink, it would override the ability to blow up the size of the photo.
So, my next thought is to tackle this from creating a new page and dragging the photos over one by one and hyperlink.
Any feedback is helpful. Is it twisted to be frustrated, but intrigued at the same time as I feel like a sleuth trying to solve the crime

Viewing asp pages in Dreamweaver

Developed an aspx page in Visual Studeo, but cannot view the
page in Dreamweaver's design mode - only shows me the code
view.

Also, I went into manage sites, coldfusion8 tutorial (the name of the site)
And in the site definitions box I have:
Local Root Folder: C:\xampp\htdocs\Coldfusion8

Default image Folder: C:\xampp\htdocs\Coldfusion8

OMG how stupid am I? (dont answer that)...
I copied files to that directory and I can view them now by pressing f12 in
DW.
But can you explain why you think the browser jumps to index_content when I
call for index.cfm

IWeb External page Hyperlink within MobileMe/iDisk

For the last few years I have had my iWeb site set up on my MobileMe Home/iDisk, I note that iWeb files are kept at Home > Web > Sites which contains _gallery, Sites.rss and my home pages.
I have created a genealogical web site using Reunion v9.0b which is kept at MobileMe > Home > Sites. This site was linked to my iWeb pages via a Hyperlink Link To: An External Page. The URL has been http://homepage.mac.com/adrianskehan/Sites/skehan/index.htm which has worked OK. for the last few years.
The Problem is that the HomePage web application went offline on July 7, 2009. As of that date, members are unable to create new pages or edit pages you have already published.
While I can get a link to connect to any other file in the Reunion set it will not connect to the INDEX files???
Now that I have had to update the Reunion Files how do I link it back to my iWeb pages?

I have tried rebuilding the site changing the index page to each preference in Reunion and resetting the Link for each but get the same result.

IE 5.2.3 Mac not showing DW pages

Am using Dreamweaver MX on my portable Powerbook. I've used
the same MX on my desktop iMac and no problems. When I ask it to
show the page in IE, IE opens but there is nothing put in the
address rectangle. it just sits there.
What am I missing here?

This works in both Tiger (Safari 3 required) and Leopard {Not sure about Panther 10.3}. This tip tells you how to change the "User Agent" so that the website you visit believes you are not using Safari. The reason why it is useful is because some websites check to see if you are running Internet Explorer and will block you if you are not.

I don't want to be the one to put you off. I'm in over my head too but I really enjoy the pain of grappling with Dreamweaver. It isn't really for the novice user and unlike any other app I know, it will be of greater benefit to those who have some knowledge of the underlying languages it deals with. i.e. HTML, CSS and some others. Strangely, I also hear from people that know the coding well, that they don't like/use/need Dreamweaver.
If you only want one site, and don't really need to wrench your own unique identity from what you are doing, why not look at a free site from Wordpress.com? I am sure you can use your own domain, and as you get proficient at it, you can expand what's there by paying for it.

Since our web designers use Dreaweaver and Contribute to create web pages, texts are formatted as italics when they use <em></em> tag, but when the end user browses the web using Firefox, they see bold text instead of italics. How can we remedy this problem with Firefox without changing hundreds of pages which contain <em></em>?

Links to site & external pages not working

I've spent all day working around the limitations of Muse. I created a simple site for my photography biz today with a slideshow home page, a contact page and two external pages all linked via a menu created from scratch using text and hyperlinks, not using any widgets. I intiially was having problems with the links defined on the master page as I was linking the text object as opposed to the actual text. Then after realizing I couldn't antively create a contact form w/o using Business catalyst I created one via Wufoo. The good part about that it that Wufoo works with MailChimp and Highrise. The bad part is that after pasting the html code my main menu is completely broken with no navigation whatsoever.
I'm using Muse 7.0.1 and Firefox 11 on a Mac running OSX 10.6.7.
Honestly, this is very subpar even for beta software. I think I'm just going to bite the bullet and take the time to learn Dreamweaver. The site URL is www.imagemakersny.com/photo.

It turns out the issue and fix is pretty simple. On your master page, there is a rectangle with only top and bottom stroke, and no fill, that is used to create the lines above and below the links. This rectangle is currently 'above' the links, and so catches the clicks when they are attempted. To fix this, open the master page, and select the rectangle. Then click on the object menu, and select "send to back". Re-publish/export, and everything should work. Thanks for helping to improve Muse!
