Shuffle Problems

I have loaded my shuffle 3 times. 750 songs, 150 songs and 100 songs. When I use my shuffle it only plays the last 100 songs in the shuffle. My ipod shows that I have the 1,000 songs in the ipod. How do I get the entire library of songs in the "shuffle"?
Is there a way to get a constant run of songs either by artist and/or alphabetical rather than shuffle? When I use artist it stops after those songs by the first artist are done. I would like to hear the music so I know which ones have to be deleted and replaced if they are not up to the quality that I would like.

The shuffle was not for you as it can't do what you want.
You would have been better off with a nano.

  • Please help diagnose iPod shuffle problem

Have a 1 GB iPod shuffle that is connected to an iMac G4 800 Mhz with 512 MB of RAM and running OS 10.3.9. I am having a problem that seems to be a common one. The iPod Shuffle simply won't mount. It doesn't show up on the desktop, doesn't run iTunes, doesn't show up in iTunes, and the iPod Software Updater keeps saying, "insert an iPod to update it", so it would appear the entire computer doesn't recognize it.
However, the iPod itself isn't bad, because when I plug it into a 12" PowerBook G4, it works fine. I have also managed to get the iPod Shuffle to work with the iMac under only one circumstance. If a wired keyboard is plugged in and the iPod Shuffle is plugges into one of the keyboard's USB ports, it works fine.
    I have tried the following:
    1. Complete update of every piece of software, including iTunes.
    2. Permissions repair, then restart.
    3. Unplugging all USB devices and plugging the shuffle into all three ports, one by one.
As I mentioned before, iPod Software Updater doesn't recognize the iPod. However, when I got a 12" PowerBook to recognize it, I ran the updater there, and it said the current firmware was up to date.
    What else can I try?

    Brad,
How about a few questions right back at ya!
Does it work every time when you plug it into the wired keyboard or did that just happen once? Since you mentioned a "wired" keyboard can I assume you would rather use a wireless one?
Since the keyboard worked fine but plugging the Shuffle directly into the 3 USB ports does not, my guess would be that the design of the Shuffle or USB ports make it hard to seat the device completely - you said the light was on but no mount happens, this might mean that it's not seated completely. I don't own a Shuffle and I would guess Apple would not design the ports badly but this is my guess if the keyboard, which plugs into the very same USB ports, makes the Shuffle mount.
Good luck and I hope you get the Shuffle going soon!

  • Big, confusing iPod Shuffle Problem

Okay, this is a confusing one, so read it carefully to understand it fully
The iPod shuffle in question is my ladyfriend's, bought in October 2005, and has never caused us a bit of trouble. Until last night.
Last night I downloaded and ran the new iPod Shuffle fix that Apple distributed (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303979) The iPod never had trouble in the past, but I wanted to keep up with the updates so that it stayed that way, and ran it.
After it had finished running and reset, the iPod dissapeared from the finder. I thought "great, all done and dusted." When I tried to plug it in again and add music, I went through the "what is it called" tabs etc. which come up when you first use a shuffle. It was on the Finder, in iTunes, all was well.
I noticed that after a few seconds, the iPod dissapeared from the Finder. Stayed in iTunes, but had seemingly vanished from everywhere else. This is interesting, as it's one of the things that the fix is supposed to solve in the first place!
This is my problem. The iPod vanishes when something tries to use it. If I enable 'disk use' on the device, it appears. Turn it off, vanishes again. The iPod vanishing tricks have given me some error:1418's, which were fixed to many on a website dedicated to the 1418 error who used the fix. Even running older updaters doesn't fix these problems.
I'd like to have this iPod stop dissapearing when I open programs such as iTunes, and have it work properly again.
If anyone can contribute anything to this, I'd be very appreciative.
    Cheers everyone.

  • New iPod Shuffle Problem

Hi guys, I guess this is not really a problem maybe i'm just being paranoid.
When i first plug in the shuffle and dock, itunes opens and i realize while i was setting up, a removable drive icon appears on my desktop with my name and a underscore after it, it was random since i didnt set my ipod to use it as a removable drive and the device name (my name with a underscore) was not what i set the shuffle to be. but after a little while the icon disappears and didnt appear again. is this normal? how did it come up with a random name? thanks guys!

    Name the iPod in iTunes.
You can enable/disable "disk use" in iTunes as well.
If it's enabled, the iPod should show up on your desktop.
I have found though, that even though I have disk use disabled, it occasionally shows up on my desktop.

  • Solving Ipod shuffle problem

After a week of fighting with the ipod shuffle not playing songs and trying all of the suggestions I finally uninstalled the software and then reinstalled. Do not install software with ipod connected to USB. Windows attepts to format the ipod and I believe it affects the ipod.

I was hoping it would be something like a USB device conflict, but now the shuffle is the only thing connected...
This article was one of the ones you linked to above in your initial post
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1369
Under Part 9. Verify that USB drivers are installed, did you try the steps in If only "Unknown Device" appears?  That appears to be your situation.
Also, you said that the shuffle initially worked well enough to do a sync, then it had the same problem again.  If you can get it to work again initially, before doing anything else, try the following.  Select the shuffle in the iTunes sidebar, under DEVICES.  Over to the right, go to the Summary tab.  By default, the checkbox for Enable disk use should be unchecked.  If so, check it and Apply the change.  See if that makes any difference.
(If Enable disk use was already checked, try unchecking it and Apply the change.  Basically, set it the "other way" and see if there is any improvement.)
NOTE:  When disk use is enabled, you have to eject the iPod in iTunes before disconnecting it physically.
If the disk use change makes a difference, that may provide a clue about the actual cause.

  • IPod Shuffle problem ( old version )

The problem is that my computer just won't recognize my iPod shuffle . iPod is working but i just cannot load that .
thanks when u can help .

    Hi Reins0,
you might want to try the iPod Five Rs Assistant.
Other than that, have you tried the iPod Shuffle Reset Utility? Be aware that you lose everything that is stored on your iPod when you use that utility.
You might get some more help in the Apple iPod shuffle (First Generation) Forum.
    Hope that helps,

  • IPod shuffle problem with iTunes 7

In all previous versions of iTunes I had an icon of my iPod shuffle always visible on the left hand side of the screen underneath the library. This allowed me to drag and drop new content to this icon and remove old content. Then, when I plugged my shuffle into the USB port iTunes would update my shuffle with the new content and remove the old content. The icon of my suffle would stay displayed in iTunes even when my shuffle was not conneced to my computer.
Since installing iTunes 7. The shuffle icon only displays when my shuffle is synced to my Mac. When I unplug my shuffle the icon disappears. The other problem is that once I sync my ipod shuffle and start dragging content to the shuffle it automatically starts downloading and slows down the whole process of dragging a second or third piece of content to the shuffle.
I really liked having the ability to organize the content on my shuffle without having the shuffle synced. Any suggestions how I can get this to work in iTunes 7??
    eMac   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Unfortunately, as you are aware, the Keep this iPod in the source list option does not exist in iTunes 7.
So the first thing you will probably want to do is let Apple know your feelings on the matter by submitting the feedback form on this support page .
Done that? Okay then, so now you'll probably want to make the best of the situation by figuring out if there's any kind of workaround to deal with the matter.
The best I can come up with is suggest that you create a playlist dedicated to your iPod shuffle which, for discussion's sake, we can call the iPod Shuffle Playlist.
Once you have created that playlist, when you connect your shuffle to your computer you can drag the Shuffle Playlist into your shuffle.
After disconnecting the shuffle you can get to work on modifying the Shuffle Playlist for your next update.
Note that you will have to manually clear the iPod shuffle's contents before putting a new Shuffle Playlist on it.

  • Hip hip hooray ive fixed my shuffle problem

    dear all....
after battling my shuffle for the last two days ive won the battle of nerves.....
my problem was as follows...the shuffle wasnt being recognised by windows but was showing up on itunes, when trying to download to it nothing would happen and a message saying cannot read or write to disk was showing...
    how i fixed it..
had a few goes at this but it has now seemed to work...
download updater 2006-06-28 from shuffle downloads...dont bother trying to update as this didnt help one iota..go to restore factory settings and completely restore all..if this doesnt work try it a few times...if it does, when back in itunes do not rename your shuffle just leave it at set name and it should download your whole library....
hope this works as it seems to have done the trick for me

  • 2nd-gen. Shuffle problems, related to connectivity (?)

My 2nd-gen. Shuffle worked fine until this morning.
Now, when I turn it on detached from the dock, I get a constant green light on the top (by the switch) and the light on the bottom remains off. When I say constant referring to the top light, I mean not only that it's not flashing but also that it's continuously on (I had it on for a good 10 minutes or so before assuring myself that was the case). Turning it off turns the light off, as it should.
I've tried with no success the simple restore method that Apple offers to alleviate this problem.
Further, when connected to the dock and plugged into the computer: a) the iPod shuffle flashes a green light once and b) Windows does not recognize my iPod. I've tried disabling the iPod service and reconnecting, and I've also attempted to connect the device in safe mode--both to no avail in getting XP to recognize the thing. And yes, the ports are 2.0 (if they weren't how would I ever have had the darn thing working in the first place?). And by "Windows does not recognize my iPod," I mean that I get no response whatsoever from the OS: no device manager indications, no 'Add New Hardware Wizard' prompts, etc.
As for a background that may shed some light on the above problems I'm now experiencing: This morning when I first opened iTunes 7.0.2 and plugged in my Shuffle to sync it as always, the Shuffle showed itself as empty. I then went to restore the software but was stopped cold by the infamous 1418 error (which I found odd as I'd always thought it particular to the 1st-gen. Shuffle). I then reformatted my iPod using widely-distributed instructions and was able to get past the 1418 error, only to have iTunes again halt the restore process, due to a -50 error.
At this point, I said to **** with iTunes 7.0.2 and reverted back to 6.0.5 (which reminded me how much Apple's software has gone downhill recently, but I digress). My iPod was still being recognized in Windows at this point, but iTunes was giving me some whining about how I needed to be using 7.0.2 to use my Shuffle.
The thing is, I don't want to use any version newer than 6.0.5 for a multitude of reasons. So, I plugged my Shuffle into my roommate's Powerbook G4 which has 7.0.2 installed. I intended on restoring the Shuffle in there and then using it in XP as a non-iTunes device (using the third-party software, Shuffler), but the Shuffle wasn't recognized at all. I returned the Shuffle to my computer running XP and again, the Shuffle was not recognized.
As you can see, my Shuffle isn't dead in the sense that it's quite eager to light up, but it may as well be given that I can't use for it anything besides as a hardly-functional paperweight. But such a plethora of things have happened in just one day that it makes finding the culprit behind this all nearly impossible, it seems. At the same time, though, all I need to do is get either a Windows or Mac computer to recognize it so I can format it once more and give the restore process one last chance to complete.
So, any help is much appreciated. And thanks to anybody in advance for their input, though I'll be sure to respond to any suggestions posted here.
(I know this has been a long read, but such complex problems require such a number of words.)

My compliments on your lengthy, but thoroughly accurate saga. You have several issues, many of which we share. So, see if you can glean any assistance from my saga.
    1. I simply cannot get iTunes 7.0.2 to run on my Sony Vaio notebook. It crashes seconds after loading and I have tried everything. So, I reverted back to iTunes 6.0.5.
    2. When I got a 2G-Shuffle for Christmas, I searched for -- and found in this forum -- a little program that lets you use Windows Explorer to copy music files directly to your Shuffle. It works great. You can check it out and download if you choose at this link.
    http://shuffle-db.sourceforge.net/
    3. I change songs on my 2G-Shuffle frequently. Every once in a while, my Shuffle starts acting bizarre or it just locks up like yours. Oddly, the solution was to simply delete one song from my Shuffle. I thought it was a bug in the little shuffle loader problem. But lately, I have begun to believe that it just may be firmware bug in the Shuffle itself. Based on all the people in this forum who begin their problem statement with "It worked fine for a month", and they are using iTunes 7.0.2. Well, who knows, and I don't care if Apple has a bug produced by an exact file size. BTW, every time I connect my Shuffle, I get the whining 7.0.2 message and I get to ignore it.
    4. There are a lot of posters who cured their connectivity problems by resetting their USB ports. Shutdown and unplug your PC completely. After at least 30 seconds, power back up and don't connect your Shuffle until the system is completely back up.
That's my saga. Let me know how you fare with you trouble.
    Good Luck, Bill

  • IPod nano 6th gen. shuffle problem

    Hi Everyone,
I just bought a iPod nano 6th generation but I have a problem with the shuffle function. When I select a playlist and choose "shuffle" it shuffles ALL the songs i have on my iPod, not just the playlist I selected... I would like to shuffle just the songs in one playlist.
    How to solve this?
    Thanks!
    Nanneke

you just have to enter the playlist. select a song, press on the center of the screen, change page(going on the right side) and then choose shuffle(pressing on the symbol!) that's the way for shuffling your playlist!

  • Who can answer all my shuffle problems?

i got the ipod shuffle 1gb version for christmas, and it all seemed to work just fine. i used it with my ibook a few times - transfered some songs to it, listened to it, and just left it for a couple of days on a table, switched off.
then, when i tried to turn it on a play some songs again, it just started blinking the orange/green error combination. (the key lock is not on). it wont play any songs, and when i connect it to my ibook usb (i've tried both ports), it wont appear anywhere! not on the desktop, and not in itunes. i've also tried different emacs, and two pcs.
it just keeps blinking orange till i remove it. it had not been faulty removed before this - i always click the "release/eject" sign first, and wait for it to be ready.
well, i returned it to apple, and got a new one. i put it in the usb, and it worked fine. transfered the songs again, and tried it last night. it played the songs just fine. then i turned it off, and left it till i woke up this morning. i'd been looking forward to listen to music on the bus again, but guess what! the same problem has returned - ipod shuffle is, once again, not working!
just to mention it, i've tried all the steps and solutions on the apple support site, and i've also searched different forums. i hope theres someone out there who can help me with this problem, cause it REALLY annoys me.
i run osx 10.4.4 on an ibook g4, and have the newest version of itunes. theres no use in downloading a ipod update, since it wont find my ipod.

    Lunica and Alejandro:
I also bought a Shuffle at Christmas time and I have the same problem (blinking intermitent orange / green light and iPod invisible in Finder, iTunes, etc). It worked at first but it stopped working right after I uploaded a new playlist. Like Alejandro, I bought mine in North America (Canada) but am now in Africa so I cannot exchange the iPod.
Alejandro: la verdad es que tampoco se que hacer. Chatee con Mac support y ellos no me han podido ayudar (me hacen repetir todos los pasos de hacer el restart, etc.) Dices que tampoco puedes encontrar el iPod en el Disk Utility? Yo todavia no he probado pero te diré si tengo suerte.
If there are at least three of us with the exact same problem and all bought shuffles around Christmas time in North America, could this be a fault with a batch of Shuffles?

  • How I solved my shuffle problems!!!

It was very simple you see. After 3 days of messing around with the **###! shuffle...it would work ,then not work, then it would say "can't read or write to disk" after I did the 4 R's and everything else they suggested.I called Apple and they said it was defective and they would send me a new one. I didn't want to deal with anymore shuffles!! I went to Best Buy, returned the shuffle and did what I should have done the first time-I bought a nano. It is awesome! Works perfectly...like a dream!I plugged it in , it began to download songs immediately. A very nice high quality product....so if you can ,I would just upgrade, it's worth every penny!
    Dell   Windows XP

Well, I installed the new formware to on my brand new
MBP. It resulted in not being able to connect to my
WPA Personal protected wireless network anymore.
Don't know if the wireless is completely broke or
just some part(s) of it. Needless to say that I'm
very disappointed in Apple and the general lack of
    quality of this product.
Did you do a clean install when you received your MBP? I found that when I used the Migration Assistant it messed up alot of things... Keychains and the ability of the Airport to rejoin previous network connections, especially when waking from sleep.
I opted to do a clean install and put everything in manually.
The MBP liked that more then the Migration Assistant. I have no connectivity issues at all now even when I close the lid and re-open it. It connects with no problems.
    Food for thought.

  • Playlist shuffle problems

I'm having issues with playlist shuffling on my iPhone 4, and the only discussion I found with the same problem remained unanswered.  I have a playlist of various classical music that I want to shuffle randomly, and it won't.  If I play it in order, all 53 songs will play and can repeat in order.  If I select "Shuffle" from the list of songs, or if I hit the blue "shuffle" icon on the cover art, it changes from "1 of 53" to either "1 of 8" or "1 of 9" (depending on which song happens to be playing).  The smaller groups don't seem to be based by artist or by album, but I can't get it to shuffle all 53 songs. I tried making a smart playlist by genre, and I tried making the playlist manually.  Nothing seems to work.  I have another mixed playlist with various artists and multiple albums, and it functions normally: I can get it to shuffle randomly through all 51 songs across albums and artists no problem.  There must be some property of the music files or the playlists that I'm missing that's causing this bug, but I'm at my wit's end.  Any suggestions?

Do all the songs in your playlist have a check in the box to the left of each song's name?  Songs without a check will be ignored unless specifically selected to play. If you don't see the checkboxes, go to iTunes > Preferences > General and check "Show list checkboxes".
To check or uncheck all boxes on a Mac with one click, hold down the Command (cmd) key and click on one of the checkboxes with the mouse.  You can use this in a library, a playlist or in search results.
If the check marks are not the source of your problem, select one of the songs that won't play when shuffling. Open the song's information window (cmd + I or File > Get Info) and click the Options tab. Check that "Skip when shuiffling" is not checked.

  • Shuffle problem going between 2000 and XP?

I recently got my girlfriend a shuffle and it worked fine with my computer, which is running 2000 and has the latest iTunes updates and iPod updater. The only problem I have on my computer using her Shuffle or my Nano is the amount of songs I can transfer at once (which is usually 20, 10 on shuffle).
Anyway, I'm not sure if Shuffle was the latest version out of the box or not, but it didn't need updating from my computer, unless it was automatic. She took it home to try it on her computer (running XP) and iTunes wanted to format it. I gave her the updates off the site (since she doesn't have internet) and told her to try them since I didn't think it was needed. She tried that and it still managed to screw it up. So I had her restore it and that worked, but she decided after she got it to work to plug it back in again to play with the songs and it had to be restored again and then restored a few more times after that.
So I was wondering if there was anything I can do to fix it, like uninstall everything that deals with iPod and install the version that came with Shuffle then reinstall the new version over it along with the updater? Take it away because she's apparently bad with technology and have her only deal with my computer for updating her song list? Or was there another way to make it so she won't be restoring shuffle everytime she changes computers? Since I figure it should be compatible enough to go between different versions of windows with different versions of iTunes and still work with no problems.
      Windows 2000

That's probably it, since she didn't have any of the music because it was with me. From what I remember, she went around that, and used restore after she backed up all the music. But from what I remember it takes no time at all to a few minutes to restore my Nano, but the Shuffle doesn't have a screen to tell you what's going on (and I find the updater is unreliable with info sometimes).
She has told me she did the same thing about 20 times before it started to work. So she must've been restoring and thinking 'this isn't doing anything' and ripped it out and eventually gave up and let it do it's thing.
But I'll have to deal with it next time when she tries to sync it up with my iTunes, so maybe it won't be a big problem this time around.

  • Shuffle problems, please help

Got a shuffle for a family member
Already had iTunes on PC for my ipod
Created second user account for use with new Shuffle
Installed iTunes on new user account
iTunes won't recognize shuffle on new account
WINXP only recognizes as USB storage device
WINXP wouldn't allow install of ipod software as it already existed on another user account

Yes, the little box has to be checked in order for the songs to be played continuously. I wasn't aware that unchecked songs would add to Party Shuffle, but it makes sense. The reason it's putting the same song multiple times is that you haven't checked enough songs to make up the whole list so it repeats to make up the 25 or whatever.
Go to the Library. On a windows machine, I think you shift-click one of the boxes and it will check them all. If it's not shift, try the other modifiers.
Then, I'd recommend that you select everything in the Party Shuffle list and hit delete. This should completely repopulate the Party Shuffle list and often fixes problems with it picking odd things.
