Simple instructions for BC update...PLEASE!

Hi all, I have a MBP running 10.4 and BC beta 1.2. Can anyone tell me, in easily understandable directions, how to update to BC 2.1? Do I have to buy Leopard first? I have downloaded the update on both sides but nothing happens. I have critical data on my windows side I don't want to risk.
Thanks.

Oh, I know quite well that we are doing some 'field beta testing' or something.
I also treat OS X itself and patches, updates, etc with kid gloves.
Apple uses EFI which makes things harder no doubt, and Microsoft, Intel EFI group of which Apple is partner, only Windows Vista 64-bit SP1 on 64-bit hardware (and BIOS) support EFI.
I think this is all new territory for Apple, it is helping their sales and such, once it was found that the move to Intel cpu unleashed a huge interest in, at first, trying to find a means to even install or trick the system to run on Apple hardware.
Only 3-4 Macs are officially supported for Vista 64-bit, XP Pro 64 is not, so we have MacBook and Pro, and Mac Pro, and maybe iMac, but only 2008 models that came with BootCamp 2.0 or later.
SP3, if you read the trade news, breaks on AMD systems, is causing a lot of consternation, and MS is trying to work out a fix. Seems HP's image they shipped for XP was also to blame and some systems may need updated BIOS.
With Apple, once you update the EFI firmware, there is no going back, either.
BC 2.1 has been one of the most... difficult? patches or updates. Though I have to say, on the OS X (Tiger/Leopard) forums, whenever there is an update or even security update, some systems and users will have trouble, and can range from mild to severe, from 10% or higher. Worst cases are where there is no backup of course.
Wisest course of action I see, multiple backups; test it on a clone or something even; and, wait a week at least before applying.
I have seen little or just small reports that people found BC 2.1 necessary, helpful, or critical, and not even that it is a "must" for installing SP3 probably.
Sometimes all there is will be "improves compatibility" and you are left to wonder what some update actually does, what it fixes, etc.
All new Apple hardware will only work on current OS, you can't "go back" and some didn't want to move to OS X for years also and would be happy. Mac OS 6.05 was the most stable version for me - until Leopard, but Leo has its own and why I waited until now, May, to make it my primary OS (I was going to wait for summer or fall but forced my hand).
Malware is getting 'smarter' and more cleaver and all these SQL-injections and having to be constantly scanning for rootkits (and most programs are not dealing with them that well). Heck, today even the NSA suffered a denial of service and went off line!
If you want an excellent book/manual I strongly recommend David Pogue's "Mac OS X: The Missing Manual, Leopard Edition" to get you started, covers everything in about 900 pages and easy to use or find answers.

Yes, please, as a high priority. Two more things to make life easier for email users:
    Thank you

I wish I had more to say! Lots of little things going on. Changing caches on images. Getting uploads out of the queue faster. Lots of discussions with Jive on making new enhancements. Gathering quotes and statements of work. Lining up resources. But all of these things have so many processes and go slowly.
I understand the process for new features takes a lot of time, both on
the Jive side and the Adobe side. But how about the bug fixes? There are
no statements of work there, no budget approvals, no slow moving
bureaucratic processes, that is just a matter of Jive writing code.
Specifically what I am interested in is:
    1. Progress on the bouncing email. And if Jive is unable to solve that
anytime soon, whether they please can reduce the timeout on their mail
queue. After 2 days I can resend email, after 5 days the thread is dead
and buried. (That would be the "maximal_queue_lifetime" parameter in
    main.cf on their email gateway.)
    2. Progress on the proper headers in the email for threading.
I understand a lot of people are also anxious to see the updates Jive
released last week in Clearspace 2.5.13 put online, but since I try not
to use the web interface there is hardly anything interesting for me there.

  • Conflicting instructions for BIOS update: boot from CD but undock from Ultrabase?

I have an X61 and am trying to update the BIOS to the latest.
Lenovo support has a downloadable "BIOS Update Bootable CD" for my model of ThinkPad - an ISO image that I can use to create a bootable CD that will update my BIOS.
However the instruction file includes this sentence: "If your computer is attached to any kind of docking station or port replicator, turn off the computer and detach it before proceeding." This is before I boot from the CD.
If I undock from the ThinkPad X6 UltraBase then how can I boot from the CD??
Should I just ignore the instruction to undock?
Sorry if this seems silly but I'm a bit paranoid about updating the BIOS.
FYI here is the download page at lenovo: http://tinyurl.com/248kwp
    Thanks for any clarification

    Mike,
go to this site, it's a heck of alot easier to use. On the other hand you can also use system update, it'll get most automatically for you. For SU make sure .NET Framework v.2.0 or later is installed.

  • I need simple instructions for setting up hosted home directory

Folks, I am just learning how to use OS X server (10.3.9) in our office. The manuals aren't totally clear.
We have a lot of interns that work on shared documents on several machines. I want them to be able to login into an account on the server (where the shared files will be) and work on them that way.
I am not quite sure how to do this. The server is already set up. I set up a LDAPv3 domain (not sure why I needed to - just following the manual instructions.
    Things I don't understand:
    - why did I need to setup another domain directory (per the manual's instructions). The local one does show up on our LAN even though workgroup manager says it's not visible to the network. Everyone can see the sharepoint I've created.
    - I can't seem to do anything with the Access Control List. I can't put anyone in it.
    Please advise.
    Tangier

the LDaPv3 is so that if someone isn't on the local subnet of the server they can access their user account. By having a specific directroy domain you can have an address that can be access from anywhere on the network.
It is also there so you can be able to create indivudual user accounts to have the ablitly for users to login to multiple machines and have there home folder located on the server. This allows users to not be restricted to a specific machine but still have access to all their files.
to have the hosted home directories you first need to create a location to have the home directories... then enable sharing on that location. this can be done in the workgroup manager under sharing. Make sure under the "network mounting" you enable use for home directories. Once that is created and set up you will now be able to choose that location for users home directories under "home" in the accounts section.
I don't have much experience using the ACLs sorry... basically for a share folder i make a folder, enable sharing on it in workgroup manager, mount the folder and then drag it to the login items for that group that i want to use that folder. that way when a particular user of that group logs in the share folder will mount and they can have access to the folder with out having to login to the server.
I hope that helps a little and didn't confuse you more... i am still new myself but i have had to set up the individual users and share folders.
ALSO: when having users work with the shared documents... make sure they are coping the files to there local user then copy back when they are done... this will help avoid potential issues with files being opened by multiple people and chances of file corruption.
again i hope that didn't confuse you more

  • I already have a 10-year-old web site. Instructions for iWeb update?

My web site has been up for ten years. I created it with PageMill 2.0, and now I can't even communicate with it on my new iMac because it's an OS 9 application.
That means I'm going back and forth between my old eMac and this one to try and upgrade. I've created a beautiful new art site in iWeb, and it was 100 x as easy as the first one, but I'm having problems getting it online. After ten years in the search engines, I have people enter at many of my old HTML pages and I need to use all my old web pages to forward to my new site. I don't know how to arrange the different files in the site folder to work together, or what to name them. I have tried adding a piece of code recommended for redirecting a page (meta refresh), but that hasn't worked, even when I have the iWeb files in the same folder. My Mac assumes I'll publish on .mac and that isn't the case. I have published to a folder so far. Anybody have instructions?

Ok, I'm talking to myself here! hahaha! What I was told was this from Mac Fit-it:
“You don't need to point anything at anything. Simply don't change the names of the HTML files as they are right now; that's all.HTML is HTML is HTML. You do not need PageMill to edit pages created in PageMill. HTML is HTML; any HTML editor can edit pages made in any other HTML editor.“
Now, this is terrific news, but I still couldn't figure out how to open the old pages with iWeb. So, I simply made new ones with the old names. I don't have to work with PageMill at all, and I have crisp new easily designed pages to point the way to my new site.
Now if I can just figure out the right meta refresh code (I've come across several) to do the job without giving the search engines a heart attack, and how to arrange them so they work together, I'll be in good shape. Meta refresh has problems, and Java script doesn't pause to see the refresh page. Any ideas?

  • I need simple instructions for backing up

I have an iMac running 10.7.4.
    I have 4GB of memory
I have a T back up disk, which is set up to automatically back up each night.
I have not been able to back up now for over a week as it says I don't have enough room,
"this backup is too large for the bu disk. Reqires 400.74 but only has 368.52 GB avail.
How can I find out what files are designated by the Yellow bar?  The yellow bar is showing 400 GB of OTHER.
I work with PSE and moved all the PSD files over to the external drive (which really wasn't a lot of GB). I thought it would be more and would free up a lot of space so I could back up. So, I really don't know where to go from here. I'm self taught with no one to ask ??.  I tried to search on the board here but was too confused.
    Would appreciate help.
    thank you
    Karen

Deleting data on your computer does not free up space on the backup drive. You would need to use the Time Machine application (in your Dock) to delete files from the backup.
Erasing the backup drive will not do anything to the main hard drive. But it will remove all your old backups. If that's not a desired result, then you can put this backup drive in storage, get a larger backup drive, and let Time Machine do a fresh backup on the new, larger backup drive.
Time Machine will automatically backup all mounted disk drives unless they have been specifically excluded in Time Machine preferences. It's quite possible that Time Machine backed up this other external drive while it was connected.
Please visit Pondini's Time Machine FAQ for help with all things Time Machine.

Having trouble trying to download iOS 5 - can't find the option - no under settings - general

If you have an iPad 1, the max iOS is 5.1.1. For newer iPads, the current iOS is 6.0.1. For the iPad Mini the iOS is 6.0.2. The Settings>General>Software Update only appears if you have iOS 5.0 or higher currently installed.

If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect the iPad to the computer, open iTunes. Then select the iPad under the Devices heading on the left, click on the Summary tab and then click on Check for Update.
Tip - If connected to your computer, you may need to disable your firewall and anitvirus software temporarily.  Then download and install the iOS update. Be sure and backup your iPad before the iOS update. After you update an iPad (except iPad 1) to iOS 6.x, the next update can be installed via wifi (i.e., not connected to your computer).

  • Multiple libraries, Pbook/Pmac, advice for management & updating please.

    Hi Everyone,
I travel frequently, and am looking for suggestions to keep all my iPhoto libraries up to date. I currently have a g5, Powerbook, and Mini.
I just upgraded to iPhoto 6 and I have several thousand photos on my Dual g5. I just came back with 1000 more from my diving trip. The problem is, they are on my Powerbook, and taking up alot of space on the relatively small hard drive. I managed to work through the rough upgrade from 5 to 6, and now I need some more help...
    1) What is your advice for managing multiple libraries of photos.
    2) What is the best way to transfer the iphoto pics (and movies) to my desktop, which of course has the larger storage capacity, after travelling...
    Thanks,

    Jason:
There are several different approaches to what you want to do. Let me just throw out a couple that I'm familiar with.
To get the new photos from your PB to your G5 and maintain any keywords, and other organization effort you put into them, you'll need the paid version of iPhoto Library Manager. It will allow you to merge libraries or copy between libraries and maintain the metadata, etc. That's the only way currently available to move photos from one library to another and keep the roll, keywords, comments, etc. with those photos. You can connect the two Macs with one in the Target Mode, probably your PB, and then run iPLM to move the photos to the G5 library.
Now there is a way to have a library on your PB that reflects the one on your G5 but is only a fraction of the size. That's to have an alias based library on your PB that uses the Originals folder as its source of source files. (My 25,600 files, 27G, are represented by an iPhoto Library folder of only 1.75G). When the PB is not connected with the G5, say with a LAN, it will have limited capabilities which are in part: you'll only be able to view the thumbnail files, be able to add comments, create, delete or move albums around, add keywords (but with some hassle-but it can be done). You can't do anything that requires moving thumbnails around, work with books, slideshows or calendars. Once the two computers are networked together again the library will act as normal.
Now while on the road you can have a "normal" library to import new full sized files, keyword them, add comments, etc. and then transfer to the G5 library. Once in the G5 library they will be represented in a roll(s) and corresponding folder in the Originals folder. You then fire up the "alias" library, and import those new folders in the G5 Originals folder.
It may be a lot of work but it may be one way of doing it.
I've not done any of the "sharing" with iPhoto so don't know if that's another possible candidate for transferring.
P.S. FWIW I've created this workflow for converting from a conventional library to an alias based one.

  • Simple Instructions for pasting video into IDVD 3 and burning DVD?

Many times I have tried to paste a video file into iDVD 3 and then tried to burn but it does not work, you click the burn icon in iDVD and it does not ask for a disk. I have a 700MB video file, it is in .avi originally but I can convert it to a different file type if needed, what file types burn in iDVD? And how do you paste the video file into iDVD 3 properly so it will burn? Because I must of been doing something wrong. I have -R disks.

    Hi
iDVD 3 - is rather old and
    iDVD 3 (2003)
    • Chapter markers can be added
    • Menu themes that can be adapted to movie
Need Mac OS X.1.5 or rather X.2.2
.avi - is most probably the problem as it is no video format - but a container
    Containers:
.avi, .mov, .mp4, .m4v, .wmv etc - are no video format/codecs but containers
    Formats/Codecs:
MPEG-4, H.264, AIC, streamingDV and many more are Codecs - this can or can not be opened by iMovie, iDVD or FinalCut so this info is important.
So convert the codec inside it to streamingDV .dv or to AIC and You can import it into iDVD from File Menu down to Import.
To find out what's in the .avi container
    - Open it with QuickTime-player and here
    - open Inspector (cmd+I) and
    - read Video Format/Codec: nnnnnnnn
    What does it read ?

  • Does anyone have simple instructions for disabling keyboard shortcuts? Thank you.

I'm really tired of popup boxes when I type 't', 'k' , 'p,' etc., not to mention emails getting sent before I complete writing them.

This happens when you are just typing normally, not holding down Ctrl, Alt, or other modifier keys?
I wonder whether this could be caused by one of your add-ons. Could you test in Firefox's Safe Mode? That's a standard diagnostic tool to deactivate extensions and some advanced features of Firefox. More info: [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode]].
You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:
    * "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
    * Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
Not all add-ons are disabled: Flash and other plugins still run
After Firefox shuts down, a small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (''not'' Reset).
    Any difference?

  • Simple instructions please to update N95

Can someone please give me some SIMPLE instructions how to update the firmware on an N95. I have gone round and round and round in circles on the website to no avail. I appeared to have accidentally downloaded an Updater (it suddenly popped up to be saved) and I have installed that. I then searched for hours for the actual firmware update itself to no avail. I kept ending up on what seems to be a 5 step set of instructions but nothing to say where the software file is.
Then I thought the Updater may be set up to find the file but all that produced when I installed it was the message "Cannot connect to NOL server" (whatever that is).
I cannot believe that I am so dumb that I cannot do what should be such as simple process. I tried to find something through the phone itself but that drew a blank too. Is there a file somewhere on the site to download that is the actual update? if not how do I do it?

    Nokia E7

    Hi alches,
the process should be pretty simple - you have downloaded a pc program called Nokia Software Updater which then takes you through the actual update process. But there seems to be something wrong with the pc software you are using.
Can you let us know which version of the Nokia Software Updater you are using?
Did you just download it from a Nokia website or did you have it previously installed and the software just updated itself to a new version?
And which Nokia website did you download it from?
I wrote all my posts from 2005-2011 as an "Admin" for this community. I still work for Nokia as an external consultant, so my rank in all posts is now "Employee".

    Bruce Reeves

    Dear Bruce,
How to raise an OSS note:
In service.sap.com, choose Keys and Requests -> Development Requests -> Create Development Request
The Create development request form appears. It is divided into the sections described below:
    Classification
In the 'Classification' section of the form, you can classify your request by selecting various criteria from the listboxes. This information is used for reporting purposes and to assign your request to a processor at SAP.
Reporting unit is only displayed for information. It defines if you enter the request for yourself, on behalf of a Customer Competence Center (CCC), of a customer, or of a user group. Which entries are available depends on the organization you are working for.
Priority defines the priority this request has for you.
Industry is only displayed for information. This is the industry of your company.
Other Industry allows you to select further industries if the request refers not only to your industry. To select more than one industry, hold down the <Ctrl> key and select the desired items by clicking on them.
Component defines the application component to which your request applies.
Core release defines the R/3 release you are currently working with.
Add-on defines, in case the request applies to an industry solution, the specific add-on release you are currently working with.
General provides generic features for a better classification of your request. If you wish to define more than one category, hold down the <Ctrl> key and select the desired items by clicking on them.
Cross-component provides cross-component features for a better classification of your request. If you wish to define more than one application, hold down the <Ctrl> key and select the desired items by clicking on them.
Only relevant for country allows you to specify that your request is only relevant for the selected country.
    Personal classification by requestor
In the 'Personal classification by requestor' section, you can add your own classification criteria to the request:
Classification 1 - 3: allows you to specify your own features, e.g., "Project xyz". You can enter any text up to 30 characters in these fields.
    Description
In the Description section of the form, you can describe in detail the feature you request for the SAP software.
In the Language field, select the language in which you are describing your request. For processing at SAP, all non-English requests will be translated into English.
In the Short text field, enter a meaningful title for your request.
The Long text field is mandatory. Use it to describe your request in detail. Even if you attach external description files, please enter a detailed description here.
The Business need field is mandatory. Please use it to explain why the requested feature is needed for your business.
The Example field is collapsed by default. Click on the plus symbol to the left of the field to expand the entry field, and enter an example for the requested feature.
The Current workaround field is collapsed by default. Click on the plus symbol to the left of the field to expand the entry field, and describe which procedure you currently use instead of the requested feature.
The Proposed solution field is collapsed by default. Click on the plus symbol to the left of the field to expand the entry field, and describe how you propose to solve the issue related to your request.
    Attaching documents
You can also attach files that further describe your request, for example, documents or presentations. All file types supported by this site can be attached, this includes all popular Office formats.
To be able to attach files to your request, you must have the Check In Wizard program installed on your computer. Otherwise, an error message will be displayed. If you do not have the Check In Wizard installed, click here to start the installation
    NOTE:
This will automatically save your request with the status New. The request will, however, not yet be sent to SAP. If you have not yet filled in all required fields, the system will prompt you to do so before you can add an attachment. The attachments will be listed only after you have saved or sent the request.
To attach a file, choose Add attachment.
The Check in Files dialog box appears.
Select the file you want to attach, and choose Open.
A status dialog box appears. When the status The check in process has completed successfully is displayed, confirm with OK.
The file is now attached to the development request.
Repeat the above steps for any additional files, if required.
    Saving the development request
When you have entered all required data you can save your request. To do this, choose Save. You can then edit the request and send it to SAP later. This allows a company or user group to internally manage, discuss and consolidate its development requests before it decides which development requests will be sent to SAP in the next step. (Development requests that are no longer relevant can be set to status Closed by author).
Sending the development request to SAP
When you have entered all required data, you can alternatively send the request to SAP immediately. To do this, choose Sent to SAP. You need a special authorization to use this function. If you had saved a request before but not yet sent it to SAP, you can send it to SAP later using this function.
    Resetting the request form
If you make a mistake during data entry and want to reset all entries to the values they had when you opened the form, choose the Reset button.
    Closing the request
If you find that you no longer need the request, you can close it. In this way, you specify that no further processing of the request is necessary.
To close the request, choose Closed by author.
