Simple transitions help for an FCP newbee

Am moving from iMovie6 to Final Cut Pro 5 as I didn't like iMovie8 and there's been a lot of talk on the iMovie board about how FCP will probably work better for people like me...
I'm a real newbee to FCP so I'm going to embarrass myself here and ask a really simple question that I can't for the life of me get an answer to.
How do you add a simple fade up to the start of a clip? It would seem that the Fade in-Fade out Dissolves in Effects is designed to join two different clips. I have a clip that cuts to black and the next clip I want to start on a fade up from black.
How do I do this?
Also, how do I do a really simple fade to black???
Forgive me for asking such a dumb question but I just can't find the answer in the Help file (guess the question is way too simple!).

I just tried ramping the clips opacity and I got my fade in just fine, but in order to get the clip fading in from black, I had to go back to the rushes, reselect the clip I wanted and then when the cursor was at the start of the clip, open the opacity and adjust it to go from 0 to 100 in 12 frames. Then I added this clip to my timeline via overwrite, thereby overwriting the same (old) clip that didn't have the fade in. However, I'm not quite ready to mark this question as answered as how do I now add a fade in on a clip that is already in my timeline? Do I have to make the transition decision before I add the clip to the time line or is there some clever way of adjusting the opacity of the clip once it is in the time line and therefore in the edit?

I place all my LESS files, along with all of the JavaScript files in a sub-directory called _src (for source files). The _scr folder is Cloaked so that it is not included in file transfers. The structure looks like

I will then use PrePros to compile the JS and CSS files making for just two HTTP requests.
Have a look at source code (lines 7 and 110) of this site.
Incidentally, by using PrePros, not only do the LESS and JS files get compiled automatically, any saved changes are immediately visible in my browser without having to refresh each time.

Help for a Logic Newbee

A couple of questions if possible. Actually, I will likely have more down the road.
Why would an audio track have a midi channel designation in the Inspector window?
Why, if I want to only create a single external midi instrument would Logic assume it's going to be a GM module and clutter up the Mixer with 15 additional strips.
If I create more than 16 external midi tracks, lets say to drive multiple Giga Samplers, why is there only 16 strips in the Mixer window. How do I control the rest.
I really like a lot of the feature of Logic which is why I bought the upgrade and trying again to get my head wrapped around it, but Logic just doesn't seem very logical in a lot of ways. I've been a DP and Cubase guy for years and have recently just attacked ProTools, which is also pretty poorly designed in a lot of ways IMHO, but I can still find my way around them all. Logic, not so much. When Apple get's input on this product, do they seek the advise of real end users that aren't already using Logic?

"F4" search-help for custom field in PCUI

Hello all,
Does anyone know how I can create my own simple F4-help for a custom field I have added to a custom Tab Page in the PCUI? It should show a selection from a custom table.
I couldn't find an useable example in the PCUI-cookbook.

If you are using Windows Vista go to All Programs/Palm and click on the folder and select Hot Sync Manager and then try to sync with the USB cable. If you are using the Windows XP go to Start/Programs/Palm/Hot Sync Manager and then try to sync. If you don’t have the palm folder at all on your PC you have to install it. Trouble adding simple transition between clips

Hi, for the life of me I can't solve this simple problem. I'm used to using Premiere and this was easy but FCP is giving me grief. I'm assembling a simple sequence of video clips in the timeline. Each clip is at least 3 seconds long and they are snapped together in the timeline. I want to add a 1 second cross dissolve centered over where each clip joins the other. Everytime I drag the cross dissolve over the area it makes a tiny sliver of a transition. I can't make it bigger. I should be able to grab each side and drag it out to make it bigger but nothing happens. I've tried other transitions also but I keep getting this tiny sliver of a grey transition. The timeline is stretched out far so the default 1 second transition should appear large, but it's not.
A friend has said he's had this happen before as well but he can't remember how he got around it.
This is driving me crazy, any help is appreciated.

You need to make sure that your clips have enough media (called 'handles') at the beginning of the incoming clip and at the end of the outgoing clip for the transition. For example, if you have a 1 second (30 frame) dissolve, your in and out point need to be at least 15 frames from the edge of the clip.
What you are running into is that you are marking an out point at the end of a clip then adding a cross dissolve, say 20 frames in duration. Since the dissolve is centered on the cut, it will start 10 frames before the cut, and try to go 10 frames AFTER the cut...which it can't do.
What you need to do is plan how long your dissolve will be and back-time your cut so that it works.

a full 1 second crossfade reaches 15 frames into each clip. So, if you want to change a cut to a crossfade, there has to be at least 15 additional frames of each clip.
Say you're trying to crossfade from one clip into the very first frame of a second clip. FCP cannot 'create' 15 more frames of the second clip to do a crossfade. If they're not there, you're out of luck.
FCP has to extend the end of your first clip by 1/2 of your transition length, and the beginning of your second clip by 1/2 of your transition length, so those frames need to be in your system. The nature of a crossfade is mixing two clips together.

Imac 8.1 Leopard 10.5.8 for editing FCP X new version.

I was using this Imac for light editing but I want to improve it at it best. My idea is Add FCP X add more memory ram and if possible a DVD blue ray burner for HD. Can I do that? How many GB of ram I can put in?. Should I upgrade to Snow leopard?. What I have to do to add a Blue ray burner? (any recommendation?) This is a good idea, or it's to much for this computer?

Thnx for the quick reply and info - H.264 has been ok for me - overloads were just from normal usage, no QT involved....unless H.264 is working away in the background somehow?... eh? QT is necessary for Logic 8 ... am i right? could there be other unecessary items working that can be disabled? ...there are a lot of things in this that i dont use (score for one) it could be a great idea to have Logic more 'customisable' --- if that's a word.
As ever, its going to take a few updates before things run smoothly on a new OS, but....wow. -- best that people continue to put their issues up here with configuration info, i think. -- maybe 'someone will see' for future fixes in the updates....is that how it works? if so, cool. for the here and now, this is still one of the best spaces to get some quick fixes & dialog --- Logic Pro Help is a good one too.

Where can I find detailed, systematic HELP for advanced topics relating to Thunderbird?

In moving from XP to Windows 7, I opted for Thunderbird as email client in order to bypass Microsoft's hyper-intrusive Windows Live Mail (I used Outlook Express for years).
I have a very complicated email structure, and it's taken me weeks (seriously) to learn how to replicate it in TBird. Now I'm trying to customize TBird further, but none of the TBird articles/forum Q&A's/Google searches address my questions.
There is no live tech support for TBird, and I'm just about ready to leave it for good. However -- one last effort: where can I find detailed, systematic HELP for advanced topics relating to Thunderbird?

I am no expert, but I don't know of any authoritative reference as to what elements of HTML and CSS are supported in Thunderbird. However, as I believe you appreciate, it's more than just what Thunderbird supports, but one must also think about what is likely to work in other email clients. Keep it simple. Avoid ancient deprecated tags that other email clients may not support, and for similar reasons, avoid cutting edge technology. Remember that recipients using tablets or smartphones won't appreciate large fancy email documents.
The only thing ''guaranteed'' to work in email is plain text. ;-)
If you haven't already discovered it, the Stationery add-on is designed specifically to support OE stationery in Thunderbird. Your existing stationery may "just work" in this add-on. It makes switching between various stationery templates much easier, but I'm not confident that it will affect interpretation of your CSS or HTML coding.
Your code is at least clean and minimal. Most times my involvement with troublesome templates and signatures centres on the horrible bloat and mso custom code generated by Word or Outlook.
Having said that, you and I are mortal enemies, as I don't have much patience with what you aspire to achieve. I specifically don't like background images, nor being obliged to suffer other folks' bizarre choice of typefaces and colours (but your simple 12pt black Tahoma is quite inoffensive. ;-) ) I'm of an age where my tolerance and eyesight are easily offended.
Nonetheless, I'm intrigued by how to parse the tag for the background image, as it doesn't look like a legitimate pathname to a graphics file. Does the background image actually appear as required?

Well, that's more or less it, I'm looking for a simple drawing application for my grand-daughters. In the children section of iTunes store, there's only a few books and nothing more. I bought the iPad mainly for my grand-children to teach them a bit and I don't find interesting things for them.

Need help for setFilterPredicate

Hello community,
beeing quite new with the fascinating Xcode environment, I need your help for a simple thing of NSPredicate.
( Well, only simple for those who know...)
I like to display a set of values in a tableview (tblView), and to filter it with the nice search field (searchField).
What I tried:
1.) creating an array with objects defined in MyData.h with a property named mytext
2.) creating a NSArrayController, contens is the array of 1.
3.) creating an NSPredicate filter in MyModel.m (see below)
4.) Binding the filter to the ArrayController in the "filter predicate"-section : bind to MyModel, model Key Path = myPredicate
Everything looks fine when the app starts. But when I try to change the filter in my search field, I get the message:
[<MyModel 0x100141660> setValue:forUndefinedKey:]: this class is not key value coding-compliant for the key myPredicate.
Here are the codes of interest, all in the implementation section of MyModel.
Whats wrong with it ?

Which one is better?(1) is mandated by the spec. It is required because CORBA systems may
not have sufficient type information available to do a simple case.

That's simple.
All you have to do is:
From MENU goto SETTINGS, When there scroll down and select 'Restore Factory Setting'.
There are two options in there:
"Restore Settings only"
and
"Restore all"
Select "Restore All"
When done the phone will delete every thing on the Phone memory(C:\)(contacts,picture,messages etc)
and also restore phone to its original settings and will restart.
This proceedure is mostly common on S40 phone.
Hope this explain and solve the problem.

I am working on creating Managed Bean Help for Definition Help as described in ‘19.5.3 How to Create Managed Bean Help’ section of the Web User Interface Developer's Guide fpr ADF. Using JDev Version 11.1.2.1.0.

F4 help for fields in maintenance view resp. generated maintenance screen

Hello,
Im new to ABAP and I have to deal with the following requirement:
I have a maintenance view V1 what from a maintenance screen was generated automatically by the maintenance screen generator.
Now I have to add a search help for one field F1 of the maintenance screen. The values for the search help of F1 depend on a specific value of a second field F2 of the maintenance screen. So I need value of F2 as import parameter for f4-help. F1 and F2 come from different tables.
As Im new to ABAP I have several questions or thoughts:
- Im not able to easily add a search help to F1 because Im using the maintenance view V1 and thats why it is not possible to assign the import parameter F2 to the search help right?
- In general, its not that easy to add search help to views than tables or structures - why?
- Im not able to just modify the generated objects because further automatic generation of the maintenance screen will delete it right?
- The generated function module provides user includes to add user specific coding. Is there any chance to add a f4-help to field F1 and assign value of F2 to that search help as import parameter with coding in user include?
- any other ideas? I did not expect this topic to be so complicated as the requirement to change f4-help in a maintenance view resp. screen isn't very special.

Hi Fabian,
Phew! Thats quite a few questions in one... I'll try to answer them to best of my knowledge..
You can definitely have an external Search Help for a field of a Maintenance View, by calling it directly in the Screen Action Flow, using a PROCESS ON VALUE-REQUEST (like PAI or PBO). While defining such custom code on a generated screen, always make sure you do not write the coding inside the generated includes (SVIM* or <FUGR>TOP, <FUGR>DAT, etc..). Define new includes, or use those which are not generated by View Maintenance. This way, even if the dialogue is regenerated, your custom code will not vanish.
This will answer your questions 1 and 2 generally, and your question 3 also.
A Maintenance View, is something where values are read and populated purely at run-time. It does not have an Entry Help or such options, as it depends on the underlying tables. I hope this further helps with questions 1 and 2.
Coming to your question 4 and 5, which form the main question - pre-filling value of F2 while calling search-help for F1 - yes, it is possible. On the view maintenance screen, there are standard structure variables (like EXTRACT TOTAL etc), which will give you the field values of the current record. But, it can no way assure that when you call the help for F1, the field F2 is already filled!
For this, I can suggest that you programmatically implement a check to see if F2 value is filled, and read if it is. Or, if it is not filled, maybe you can shoot a Pop-up for F2, take the value at run-time, find help for F1 and get value, and also fill the F2 value (from your implementation) into the currect screen F2 value! (Phew...it is complex...)
But am sorry, there is no other way, wherein you can gaurentee that F2 value is pre-filled always, when you can help for F1. (You could try making F2 as obligatory on screen, but it still doesnt necessarily solve this purpose..!).
