Since installing Maverick my MacBook Air is no longer showing my external Hard drive, which I connect via USB.
I know the external hard drive is working and the USB port works also.
I have seen lots of complicated answers on here but nothing I can understand.
Any help appriciated.

The WD hard drive itself is probably fine, the enclosure has likely failed. WD externals are notorius for cheap enclosures failing. Try a different cable first. You can take the drive out and install it in a better enclosure, like one from OWC.

i tried using migration assistant, which will work, but i want to look through my stuff as if it were an available external harddrive, then click and drag stuff onto my new computer.If you are using Ethernet to connect the two computers, then enable File Sharing on the MBP. Would like to share printer Brother HL-2230 on windows 7 network. Using Windows 7 "Homegroup" is not an option.
The printer (HL-2230) is connected via USB to win 7 computer. Before I updated OS to 10.9.2 it (Macbook air) had HL-2230 as one of its' priinters and was able to print. Now a print request hangs on "Hold for authentication".
I have already reset printer system and re-installed printer x2 - no luck.
I have already connected WiFi Epson XP-200 to the Macbook air - runs fine, no problem.
thx for any help that can lead to the resolution of this problem.

Yes. For those two applications specifically there is sharing. This presumes both computers are on and connected to the same network.
In iPhoto, enable sharing by (on the iMac) going to the iPhoto menu > Preferences > Sharing > check Share my photos. You can either share the entire library or only selected albums. Now on your MacBook Air, in iPhoto, go to the same preference pane and select Look for shared photos.
iTunes has something similar. In the iTunes menu > Preferences > Sharing > check Share my library on my local network. On the other computer, look in the left column for SHARED and select the iMac. You can now play that music on the MacBook Air.
There are other ways to share files but for those two applications this is the simplest way.

Hi i have a macbook air that we have some photos on and i have an external hardrive that we used to use on our laptop, i have tried to drag and drop folders on to the external hardrdive and it wont let me or copy and paste???
it just shows a circle with a diagonal line through it
any help please?I suspect that the external HDD is not formatted that will allow the MBA write to it. You will have to open Disk Utility>Erase and format it to Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Note that this will delete all data on the external HDD.

Since I upgraded to 10.9.5, my macbook no longer recognizes my external hard drive. How do I fix this? External hard drive is a 1TB Toshiba formatted for mac. Worked fine until latest upgrade.
Solved the problem by dumping my external HD onto another computer. Re-formatting and re-installing the data. Not what I wanted to do but it solved the problem.

I have a new MAcBook Air and my photos don't fit on the internal hard drive. I want to store my photos on an external hard drive which I will connect to my Air when using Iphoto. How do I set an external hard drive as the default drive in Iphoto?
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

How do you mean it isn't showing the external drive? If you mean on the desktop, click Finder on the menu bar, Preferences, General and check the boxes for Show these items on the desktop - make sure hard drives is checked.
If you mean it is not showing in Finder or Disk Utility, make sure it is turned on, reboot and see if that mounts it so it shows up. -
Till my last software update on my MacBook Air I have been able to use my iPhone as a modem via USB. Now it's not working anymore. Other functions via USB are still fine. Any ideas???

Looking for a common denominator: I'l start with wi-fi as the common communication medium.
Known:
A) Broken: iPhone —> wi-fi —> Mac.
B) Broken: iPhone —>USB—> Mac.
C) Broken: iPhone —> Bluetooth —> Mac.
D) Working: Mac —> USB —> other USB devices.
Unknowns:
E) Test Mac —> wi-fi —> a non-iPhone router.
F) Test iPhone —> wi-fi —> another wi-fi device.
Given not A, not B and not C either the Mac or the iPhone could be the culprit.
1) E | F : Non sequitur (deepens the mystery).
2) not E | F : The Mac is the common denominator.
3) E | not F : The iPhone is the common denominator.
4) not E | not F : All heck broke loose.
For case 1: It would be something on the Mac that prevents it talking to the iPhone through three media even though it can talk to other routers over wi-fi. That would be weird indeed, given the iPhone is talking to other wi-fi devices with no trouble.
For case 2: All of the Mac’s intranet media broken (wi-fi, Bluetooth, and wired-USB) and at least wi-fi works on the iPhone. Something weird is going on in the Mac.
For case 3: The iPhone router function is broken. Upgrade the iOS? Test using another iPhone?
For case 4: Throw everything in the trash and start over. -
I just bought a Macbook Air. I also have an external harddrive for which to transfer and save all my existing music from my PC. Will I have any troubles with iTunes recognizing where my music is located if I keep it on the external harddrive and not save it on the computer's harddrive?

Can i use my time capsule to wirelessly backup my macbook and its external hard drive, which up until now was it's time machine and storage? How?
The external drive must be connected to the Mac using either USB or FireWire
You must remove the external hard drive from the list of items that are "excluded" from backups in Time Machine Preferences.
Here's how:
Open System Preferences (gear icon on the dock)
Open Time Machine
Click Options
Look for the name of the hard drive in the list of "excluded" items and click on it to highlight it
Click the -- (minus) button at the bottom of the list to remove the hard drive from the list of "excluded" items....so it will now be backed up
Strongly recommend that you do the first backup using Ethenret from your computer to the Time Capsule since the entire contents of the external drive will be copied on the first pass. Ethernet will be 3-5 faster than wireless.
Once you have the first backup done, you can use wireless for subsequent backups since they will nornally be much smaller....unless you add large files to the external drive. -
I connected my external hard drive to my new imac to put all of the information from my macbook onto it. I have been working on the macbook now and want to reconnect the external hard drive so my imac is updated with the work. How is that done? or is it possible?
As I said, I don't use Time Machine, so it'd be best to wait for an "expert" answer, but, with my very limited knowledge, I'd say: probably not - so, for now, I'd suggest you read up on Time Machine:

I Recently updated the software on my MacBook Pro. Now, my computer no longer recognizes my external hard drive. Could this be related to the software update and, if so, how do I correct the problem?

I don't want to use macbook pro memory for my very large music files.
