Single network connection using multiple profiles

Apologies if this has already been asked - I have searched!
Is there a way of setting up netcfg - or a wrapper script - so that it tries multiple profiles  but then stops when it finds one that works?  These profiles might be a mix of wired or wireless - so simply using net-auto-* doesn't look like a solution (unless I'm misunderstanding them?).
My laptop often lives in my office where it is connected to a wired connection.  But, being a laptop, it is sometimes moved and will need, in most cases, to connect to a wireless connection.
I'd like the system, during boot, to try profiles in a given order and stop when one connects - is this possible?

Sounds like what netcfg normally does if you enable the service? Or net-profiles as the initscript was called. (This is based on documention, never used this myself.)
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ne … t-Profiles
Edit: I run net-auto-wired and -wireless with POST_UP and PRE_DOWN commands to stop net-auto-wired when a cable is plugged in and restart it when the cable is removed. Seemed to work pretty well, but I think I've never actually used a wired connection since I set that up...

  • N70 Unable to establish network connection using p...

    . . . but can browse the net using handset alone; PC suite can do other functions but OTA is not able to connect. This happened after I downloaded the latest PC Suite 7. Recommendation of FAQ/Help is to check connections settings (duh) and have cooperated with instructions. Nope, didnt work. Have tried:
    Uninstall; install of PC Suite to the letter 5x
    Reset phone to factory settings
    Use settings wizard to ensure proper internet settings
    Was recommended download usb cable driver - link is non existent
    Tested using a different N70 unit on my laptop - still no go (now doesnt that mean there is a software issue????)
    Most of the help desk tips at the call center are stop gap and rarely meant to go the distance assisting you (like when a blanket fix is recommended - go to service center to have phone software upgraded) or the standard spiel of "we'll put your case on record and we'll call you back in hours" and sometimes they do call back or not. So far in my case none of the tips have worked. I am about to reformat my pc, and if this doesnt work, then what can we say about the problem? Did we get a dud PC Suite, a lemon, a beta version?
    How then can I browse the net using my mobile as modem? I guess I am venting my frustrations here - but hey, may I challenge Nokia to find a fix for connectivity issues related to use of a Nokia Phone as a modem? Check out the discussions and you will find similar issues echoed all over. Or is Nokia just waiting for one of us indomitable tinkerers to find a solution and share it in these discussions?

    I REFORMATTED MY PC TO SEE IF IT IS A PROBLEM WITH MY LAPTOP SOFTWARE. I AM STILL UNABLE TO ESTABLISH NETWORK CONNECTION USING MY PHONE AS A MODEM. IT SAYS CHECK CONNECTION SETTINGS, BUT HOW FAR CAN YOU GO WITH THAT? THE CONNECTION SETTINGS ARE FINE! I CAN BROWSE THE NET USING THE HANDSET ALONE, SO WHAT GIVES? I CHALLENGE NOKIA TO FIND A SOLUTION TO THIS PROBLEM.

  • Single item shipment using multiple trucks

    Hi Friends,
    I have a typical requirement where my client want to ship one of their product ( A Huge item, which they dismantle it for shipment) using multiple trucks. How we can handle this situation using SAP LES module? They can hire multiple trucks to ship this item by road to the destination using multiple service providers. So the service cost also need to be settled for all these service providers.  Will SAP allow to split a single item through multiple shipments? I really appreciate a solution for this.
    Thanks

    There are a couple of recommended methods for using more than one iPod on a single computer. Method one is to have individual Mac or Windows user accounts which by definition would give you completely separate libraries. Each account has it's own iTunes folder, Library and iTunes Music folder and you load it with CDs etc just as you did with your original one. Each iPod can be set to update however the owner chooses, sync all, manual or sync specific playlists.
    Method two is to set your preferences so that either one or all iPods get updated with only certain playlists within one library. Have a look at this article and see what you think and go for whichever you feel suits your needs best: How To Use Multiple iPods with One Computer
    Another option when using a single library is to set the iPods to manual update: Managing content manually on iPod
    Choosing the update option "automatically update selected playlists only" (called Sync Music - Selected playlists in iTunes 7) allows you to create a playlist specifically for each iPod and drag the tracks you want into it. If you tire of the list and want to change it, you just add or remove the songs you don't want. The ones you take out out remain in the library to be used by the other iPods. Make your playlist a Smart playlist and limit the size to just below the advertised capacity of your iPod ( for example, around 3700MB for a 4GB or 1800MB for a 2GB Mini or Nano). You can read more about playlists at these links:

  • How many Samsung Stratosphere users do not have reliable network connectivity using hotspot or tethering?

    I am on my 3rd phone in as little as 9 months because I have never been able to stay on the network using the hotspot or tethering. The network keeps disappearing and coing back on. I am in a 4 g area and right across the street from a main Verizon store. My antennae strength is full and my 4g indicator is on but it disappears so much that I cannot rely on network service with my phone. I actually went out and purchased a 4g aircard and that works just fine so I know its the phone and not the network. Its funny I keep getting put back into this phone when its the phone that has the problem. My salesman said after the 3rd phone you will be upgraded to the next best phone so hopefully Motorola Driod 4 will be the key top reliable network connectivity. I wish I knew how widespread this is or has been. I realize not a majority of Stratosphere users probably dont use the hotspot or tethering much but I use it or try to on a daily basis. I love the phone but not the hotspot or tethering capabilities. My newest phone never got any new apps or anything put on and it had problems outta the box.

    This phone SUCKS period.  I have only had it since July 27 and it has NEVER worked well.  I was never told (of course other than small print) that I had two weeks to return and get a totally different phone if not happy. So the 15th day I found that out. They pulled my sim card it worked better for about one week. Than back to crap.  So, I did a factory reset as they told me to. It worked for about another 2 weeks maybe. Now back to the same old thing again.  Drops calls ALL THE TIME with full network strength I can here them they cannot here. Goes back to factory defaults all the time. Starts not ringing and going only into voice mail. Freezes up where you cannot even shut off, you have to take the battery out. Also, constantly loses connectivity even though it is showing 4G and all bars too.
    Went in again to discuss this with them just today.  HMM, first, if you go back to comolaints this has been a main complaint of this phone for a huge percentage of customers.  Hmm, they are still selling it as a GREAT phone, that is what they said to me, ohhhh, no problems.  Today they looked it up and supposabley says Samsung as of July 30th is aware of this problem and now has 90 days to fix it.  Current fix. They SAY, pull the battery out EVERY night.  Stuck with phone will not replace with a different model. Only same model. SUCKS...Oh and Verizon rep says to me " we are only the cell service. All warranty's are through your Samsung."  Funny thing is. WHY are they still selling it on their shelf.  I feel like sending a spy into tomorrow to same store and find out if they push the phone on them...BUSTED, I am sure they will.  Meanwhile, it sure puts bumps in the road for our livelyhood if our only phone.  Not work the retail value, so not buying my own phone to replace YET.
    Good luck....Hopefully your third time is the charm and you will finally get a replacement for this Piece of CRAP.

  • Single jdbc connection opens multiple connections to sql server

    Hello!
    I'm having a bad problem, because one jdbc connection opens multiple connections to the sql server. I'm working with the open source jdbc driver jtds and the ms sql server. Because I'm using temporary tables that are only visible to one database connection, my code doesn't work. Is this a bug in jtds or is this the normal behaviour of a java.sql.Connection?
    Here a code example:
    Class.forName("net.sourceforge.jtds.jdbc.Driver");
    conn = DriverManager.getConnection(
    "jdbc:jtds:sqlserver://"+dbConnDef.getServer()+"/"+dbConnDef.getDatabase(),
    dbConnDef.getUserName(),
    dbConnDef.getUserPasswd()
    Statement stmt = conn.createStatement();
    stmt.executeUpdate("SET DATEFORMAT YMD");
    stmt.close();
    stmt = conn.createStatement();
    stmt.executeUpdate("CREATE TABLE #tmp (FieldA INT NOT NULL)");
    stmt.close();
    stmt = conn.createStatement();
    ResultSet rs = stmt.executeQuery("SELECT * FROM #tmp");
    stmt = conn.createStatement("SELECT FieldA AS sthElse FROM #tmp");
    ResultSet rs2 = stmt.executeQuery("SELECT * FROM #tmp");
    // the strange thing is, that this second query does NOT yet open a
    // new connection, but the next sql command does.
    stmt = conn.createStatement();
    stmt.executeUpdate("DROP TABLE #tmp");
    stmt.close();
    Why is it behaving that strange way? It is absolutely necessary, that EVERYTHING that I do with my connection is really done on the same connection to the SQL server! How can I force a java.sql.Connection not to open multiple sql-server-connections?
    It is very urgent, thus, PLEASE HELP!!!
    Thousand thanks in advance! Marco.

    ...but that means, that the jdbc driver I use, is not working properly, because it should work the following way (please correct me, if I misunderstood the concept):
    I create a Connection object which should represent exactly one physical connection to the database. Then I can create as many Statement instances by conn.createStatement() as I want. There should still exist only one physical connection.
    With each of my Statement objects, I can create one result set.
    This means, I should be able to create as many result sets as I want to with only one Connection object (and therefor one physical connection) by creating multiple Statements, right?!
    If this is correct, the concept is perfect for me and exactly as I'm used to it by other programming languages. Then, only my jdbc driver does not work properly which means I either have to replace it by another one or change it myself (it's open source).

  • Can Firefox be configured to open most-recenlty-active Firefox window when you click a link in another application? Am using multiple profiles.

    I think this is really a feature request, but I didn't see a forum for that. I used to use firefox almost exclusively, but switched to chrome when I started freelancing for a couple of different companies -- the identities feature of chrome really helps me keep my sanity by having a unique identity for each company. However, an issue has recently developed with chrome that made me switch back to firefox. The profiles feature in firefox seems to have gotten a lot better since I made the first switch, and I'm pretty happy with how it works ... with one exception:
    With firefox, clicking on a link in a different application always opens in the default profile. With Chrome, it would always open in the browser window that was most recently active. This is a very intuitive behavior, as whatever I am doing in the other application (e.g. thunderbird, evernote, skype) is almost always related to whichever browser window I had opened last.
    Any chance of this getting implemented? Or maybe there's already a way to do this? I found the following related topics, but neither helped with this question:
    https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/981608?esab=a&as=aaq
    https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/983341?esab=a&as=aaq

    I just switched back to Fx from Chrome after using Chrome for about 2 years.
    I use two profiles with Chrome, one for work and another one is personal. They don't share anything which is exactly why I have two profiles and not just two windows. I found an extension for Fx to easily open two instances of Fx with different profiles but all links open in the same instance, which is not how it worked with Chrome.
    With Chrome, whichever window was active last is getting the link which makes it perfect for multi-desktop use (on Mac OS X). I'm quite upset and annoyed that Firefox cannot do that. Isn't there *some* way?

  • Send eMail via Thunderbird with filled "Email information" when using multiple profiles

    Hello.
    I hope you can help me.
    We are using two Thunderbird profiles:
    "Sales" and "Purchases".
    We have thunderbird links for both of them on the desktop:
    This is how we call start the firefox profiles:
    Purchases: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Thunderbird\thunderbird.exe" -no-remote -p Purchases
    Sales: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Thunderbird\thunderbird.exe" -no-remote -p Sales
    (-no-remote is needed to start Thunderbird with two instances at once, -p <Profile> is to choose the profile)
    Everything works so far.
    Now we have an application which calls the "write"-dialog of thunderbird. (the dialog where you can send eMails)
    When calling the "write"-dialog, the fields of this dialog (from, to, subject, and the text body) should be filled by parameters.
    The application uses following call:
    thunderbird.exe -compose to=[email protected],subject="example subject line",body="this is the example body" -no-remote -p Sales
    That means that the send dialog of the Sales-Profile-Thunderbird should be opened with the "sales" profile.
    (email receiver is filled with "[email protected]", subject is "example subject line", and the text is "this is the example body")
    The Problem:
    This works only if thunderbird with the "Sales" profile is not already running. If Thunderbird with the "Sales" profile is already running, Thunderbird is telling that the process is already running and should be closed first.
    Before adding the second profile "Purchases", we only used "Sales" profile, and we started thunderbird without "-no-remote -p Sales".
    With only one profile and without "-no-remote -p Sales", every worked well.
    But with 2 profiles, the user always have to close thunderbird first before calling the "write"-dialog from our application.
    Is there something I can do? Maybe changing the call used by our application to show the write-dialog?
    If you need more information, or something is not clear enough, let me know.
    Best regards
    M. Jaeger

    command line arguments here https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Mozilla/Command_Line_Options
    Perhaps the issue here is your desire for a separate profile for sales and purchases. That looks to me to be where the rot starts. Now your trying to start a third instance.
    So how about you explain what it is your trying to achieve, as you can not be the only person in the world wanting to use email in a business.
    I see a reference to a write dialog from your application. Is it your writing an application and trying to make Thunderbird work the way you have designed your application and it simply does not do that?

  • How to use multiple profiles within the same instance of Thunderbird

    About a month ago, I had Thunderbird configured with three profiles,
    and all three could be used within a single startup/instance of
    Thunderbird. That PC is now gone. I have re-configured the three
    profiles on a new PC, but am having trouble making all three
    useable within the same instance of Thunderbird. Can you help?
    Both PCs are/were Windows-7 64 bit.

    Thunderbird only opens on the default if one profile
    or
    if Profile Manager is instructed to ask at startup it will allow you to choose which Profile to open else it opens on the last Profile used..
    So it shows one Profile at a time in one instance of Thunderbird.
    However, one Profile can have many mail accounts.
    eg: I run 4 mail accounts in one Profile.

  • Using multiple profiles

    The Apple web site page for the Airport Express mentions using the unit to create a wireless network in a hotel room. It mentions that the Airport Express can have up to 5 profiles stored for different locations, using "it's setup software".
    However, when I try running Airport Setup Assistant it asks if I want to "Set up a new Airport Base Station" or "Change settings for an existing..". However, with either option I cannot find a way of creating a new profile.
    This 'on the go' page on the site advertises this as a major feature, yet I cannot find any help or instructions telling me how to do it. Has anyone worked this out?
    It's strange, the 'On the go' web page says "Easy Setup with Five Profiles" "What else would you expect from Apple". However, do a search in these forums for "Hotel" and you find loads of people asking how to get it working, many of which are unanswered or unresolved.

    Actually, I found this http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=108081 which has solved my question!

  • Secure wireless network connection using Airport.

    Hi,
    I live in a condo with wireless connection. I do not have access to the router and I do not know what its settings are.
    I was provided with a password when I moved in so it has some kind of security.
    Is there any way I can transmit secure data using the building's router? How can I protect my laptop from unwanted intrusion?
    Thank you.

    Couple of points:
    1. Since you don't say what kind of security the wireless router is using, it is hard to say how vulnerable it is or isn't. I am not at a location right at the moment where wireless is permitted, so there is nothing nearby for me to check, but as I recall, if you option-click on the airport icon in your menubar, I think it may tell you the type of encryption. The other option would be to turn off airport then delete the password item from your system keychain (/Applications/Utilities/Keychain Access.app) then turn airport back on and as I recall, it will say what kind of password it wants you to enter (WPA2 or whatever). As far as I know, WPA2 with a good password is as good as it gets. A good password is something not prone to an automated dictionary attack (p@$$w0Rd is not a good password - stuff like that is in the hackers' dictionaries). The more random the character string and the more characters (up to 63), the better.
    2. To keep your computer secure, disable all sharing (System Prefs > Sharing) except for when you need to let others gain access to your computer. Use good passwords (a la #1 above, except I don't think OS X allows anywhere close to 63-character passwords, which nobody could remember anyways, besides it being really inconvenient from a user perspective). Turn your firewall on (System Prefs > Security > Firewall) to block (unanticipated/unexpected) incoming connections unless you know you need it otherwise.
    3. To transmit data securely, your web traffic can only be considered to be secure if using https protocol (like what online banking websites use). There will be a small padlock in the upper right hand corner of Safari's user interface, and the site URL will begin with "https." For file transfers like ftp, it has to be using sftp protocol. For email, it has to have SSL checked on for both send and receive in Mail's Prefs, and whether you use those parameters or not is determined by the email provider, not by you. Also, if you access networks via VPN (like your employer's corporate LAN), VPN securely encapsulates data destined to and from that netwrok.

  • Creating a reliable network connection using WiFi

    Hi there,
    I have 2 iMacs running Maverick. I have a home Wifi network and I am trying to create a reliable connection between the 2 computers.
    The wifi signal at both locations is strong although in 2 different buildings i.e. house and studio.
    I currently have them networked but is very unreliable and I am not sure if there is some type of sleep mode or something that cause them to stop communicating.
    Basically I go to Finder -> Go -> Connect to Server everytime I need to re-establish the connection.
    Ideally I would like the connection to be permanent and auto restore if connection is lost.
    Is this possible and could you walk me throught the steps and any settings I should be aware of?

  • Internet Shortcuts saved on Desktop open new instance of Firefox 3.6 using clean profile--how can I make it open all shortcuts using current profile?

    I rely heavily on Firefox's profiling ability to assist me in my web design projects. Lately, using Firefox 3.6, I have run into some problems with how it opens Internet Shortcuts that are saved locally (i.e.- shortcuts that reside on my Desktop). When I double-click on one of these shortcuts, a new instance of Firefox 3.6 is loaded with the saved website from the shortcut, but it's also initialized a fresh profile (i.e.- my bookmarks are gone, no add-ons, etc.--it's as if it uses some sort of "hidden" clean slate to load the shortcuts).
    Is there any way to force Firefox to load all shortcuts into whatever profile I'm currently using at that given moment? I think the reason this has happened to begin with is because of the fact that I did some stuff to Internet Explorer awhile back that caused some problems with the Internet Shortcut associations and it all led to this eventuality.
    I'm running Windows XP Pro and have the following profiles with my Firefox versions:
    "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox 3.6\firefox.exe" -no-remote -p Firefox3.6
    "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox N\firefox.exe" -no-remote -p FirefoxN
    "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox 3\firefox.exe" -no-remote -p Firefox3
    "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox 2\firefox.exe" --no-remote -p Firefox2
    When I go into the "Folder Options / File Types" and double-click on "Internet Shortcut", I have the following within the "Advanced" settings (for the "open" action):
    Action: open
    Application used to perform action: rundll32.exe shdocvw.dll,OpenURL %l
    "Use DDE" is checked...
    "DDE Message" is blank...
    "Application" is "shdocvw"...
    "DDE Application Not Running" is blank...
    "Topic" is "System"
    Again, I think the root problem here is to do with the profiles and how they're handled when being opened with Firefox but I can't discern how to apply a fix with all this as I've obviously goobered this up a bit. I would really appreciate some professional knowledge on this and would prefer to avoid any reinstalls of anything if possible.

    To save your sanity with this issue, my advice is to find a method other than desktop shortcuts to open those URL's.
    1. Desktop shortcuts are going to open the Default Browser.
    a. With multiple versions of Firefox installed that would be the last version that was installed when you have Firefox set as the Default Browser in Windows..
    b. The Default Browser is going to use the Profile that shows a Default=1 in the profiles.ini file.
    c. The Default Browser with the Default Profile isn't going to open if you have any other versions of Firefox already running, and the -no-remote command line parameter doesn't work in this situation.
    2. The use of multiple Profiles and multiple versions isn't officially supported by Mozilla, and all the Bug reports that I have ever read about Requests for Enhancement have been WONTFIX'd by the developers. Basically we have to work with the limitations in Firefox and maybe improvise work arounds by ourselves. I've even seen a few threats about removing Profiles altogether in RFE Bug reports about Profiles.
    I have had so many problems over the years with this Default Browser / Default Profile thing over the years that personally I find it easier to just set Opera as the Default Browser in Windows rather than have a Profile get b0rked because some other program I am using decides it wants to open the Default Browser unexpectedly. I don't use Opera for much, but it is a lot better than IE for purposes of being the Default Browser, considering the quirks I have seen with Firefox and multiple Profiles.
    I have written a number of postings over at the MozillaZine Builds forum over the years about installing multiple versions of Firefox and using multiple Profiles. There's a lot of tips and comments provided by other multiple Profile users in one of those threads. Why don't you read those threads and see if it gives you some ideas or solutions I haven't thought of.

  • Airport express multiple profiles and Lion.

    Hi. I have an old export express that allowed me to use multiple profiles. Having learned that Airport Utility 6.0 did not allow for many configuration changes I downloaded and istalled as suggested the old 5.6 version for Lion (had to extract the package because of the installation incompatibility with Lion). However, even in Airport Utility 5.6 I can't find the profiles tab or selector. Any ideas?

    do I need to use my computer to change the profile before unplugging the airport express and taking it with me wherever I am going,
    Yes, unless you have another device handy on the road with a 5.x version of AirPort Utility installed.
    or will it switch automatically
    No, you must manually "switch" to the profile that you want to use at any given time.

  • Airport Extreme dropping network connection

    Hi all,
    I have had my iMac and Airport Extreme for about 6 months. Within the past month, each time my computer either hibernates or starts up after shutting down, I have to physically unplug my Airport Extreme for the Internet connection to work again. I have tried to update the software and also tried to reestablish the network connection using the Network Preferences and System Preferences yet nothing has worked so far. Any help would be great! Thanks,

    I believe it has something to do with securing the network as I'm now running an unsecured network and it not only stays up but it also seems a bit faster. I even ran the Airport Utility via ethernet and got it to "almost" configure but for some reason the setting never got implemented but at least I have internet access in my entire house. I thought it might be interference with some part of the house but it is indeed due to the latest firmware update for the AEB. Which I now call AE"BS". I tried my older Airport Express but I also couldn't get it to configure to now I'm not even sure if its firmware on the AEB or the Airport Utility that is messed up. Going tethered is not an option as I don't want to hunker down in a closet! Go unsecured and it might fix a lot of the issues we are seeing.
