Single standby for cluster primary DB
hi
I'm looking for some paper and advices if it's possible /how/ to setup a single standby server for primary DB which is 2-nodes RAC cluster.
I use 11.2 Std Ed. on Win2008 svr R2.
Note, it's a Standard Oracle Ed.
I saw some document on replicating single primary server, but I'd like also to find out how is it with above config: RAC primary <-> single standby.
In particular, how to deal with 2 threads of archivelogs?

I have a task to configure a Single Instance Standby Database with ASM for 2-node Primary RAC+ASM database.
Version using : 11.1.0.6 Oracle 11g --- *" STANDARD EDITION "* Please note datagaurd will not be supported in standard edition.
Primary database - 2 -Node RAC using ASM storage (All datafiles, redologs, controfile and archive logs)
Need to setup a single instance standby database manually and than using scripts to transfer the archive logs from primary server to standby server to do recovery time to time.
Please let me know if there are any configuration document(s) which can help me to set the manual standby? or need your kind help to give your valuable ideas how to go in above situation.

As in standard edition the archive destination will be on ASMI don't think the Edition of Oracle (Standard or Enterprise) dictates where and how you store your archive logs, but it's possible I've misunderstood what you mean...SE dictates that database storage for RAC will be ASM, including archive log files. Anything else is not officially supported. I haven't tested but it may be that you can use LOG_ARCHIVE_DUPLEX_DEST to specify a local filesystem for archive log files as well.
If that doesn't work you'll have to script rman "backup as copy" jobs regularly and then transport the results of that.

Incidentally if you are forced down the RMAN backup as copy route then this will likely throw your current backup retention strategy somewhat, you'll need to think carefully about when an archivelog can be deleted following backup, how many times it might be backed up and so on. I do understand, and have argued for, the use of SE RAC. I also understand and have argued for and implemented manually managed standby a number of times. However by the time your primary database is a RAC instance and you need a standby for DR etc then you really have to look very seriously at whether Standard Edition is still the right investment or not. You will be spending a lot of DBA time managing and troubleshooting this, and you will find that it is less reliable than the off the shelf solution. I suspect that you are very close to the point where an EE installation becomes a worthwhile investment here.

Single instance standby for 2-node RAC

Here i am planing to create single instance standby for my 2-node RAC database.Here i am creating my single instance standby database on 1-node of my 2-node RAC DB.
1.) Do i need to configure any separate listener for my single instance standby in $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin in ORACLE user or need to change in Grid user login.
2.) Below is the error when i am duplicating my primary 2-Node RAC to single instance DB. And it is shutting down my auxiliary instance.

Single-instance manual standby for a three-node RAC database
Hi all,
I am wondering how it is possible to create a manual standby database for a rac primary database.
Oracle versione is standard edition 11.1.
I have experience creating and managing manual standby for single-instance database; I am wondering if and how I can instruct the single-instance standby database to discover and apply the three redo threads that I will copy from the primary site to the standby site.
Should I use rman to catalog all the archived log on the standby site ?
Should I configure many LOG_ARCHIVE_DEST_n parameters to point to many different path, one for each primary instance (i.e. one for each redo thread), and let rman automagically discover all the archived logs ?
Should I configure only LOG_ARCHIVE_DEST_1 , put archivelogs from all threads in the same folder, and let rman automagically discover all the archived logs ?

indeed i catalog all transfered archive logs in front of the recover process.
During the tests i believe (iirc) i was unable to recover from transfered archivelogs without catalog them first. But this statement is out of my mind, i am not 100% sure for this, sorry.
Some more details.
Because it is a standard edition, i have to use on the RAC side ASM. So our normal scripts to transfer archivelogs from primary to standby are obsolete.
So i decided to put the whole standby thing into the database. Now the primary database uses external scheduler jobs to do the work. The standby side is not using ASM, so there is no need to handle the logs in any special way.
The steps are:
1. Get SCN from primary and standby
2. Transfer the logs for the gap from ASM to "normal" filesystem.
3. Transfer (and compress, if not in LAN) to standby archive dest
4. Catalog on standby side
5. Recover on standby side
6. Delete on normal filesystem (on both sides, but on standby with a delay of 2 days just to be sure)
The steps on the standby side are both using the primary scn from step 1 as a parameter to avoid error messages during the catalog or recover call.

I need to implement dataguard between 11gR2 RAC db to a single standby. How do I proceed?
Secondly, I need to timely apply the archive log i.e I need the dataguard to be in SYNC mode only in the night and the standby in read only
mode rest of the times. Can I achieve this using dataguard broker? If yes, can you please provide me the steps?

-- and, if your requriement is still to have the standby open read only
alter database open read only;
10 pm:
shutdown immediate;
startup nomount;
alter database mount standby database;
alter database recover managed standby database cancel;
alter database recover managed standby database using current logfile disconnect from session;
with that setup:
- your standby stops recovering at 9am
- the archive logs of the primary will still be shipped to your standby side for any emergency
- you'll have an open read only standby from 9am to 10pm
- the archive logs will be real time applied from 10pm to 9am
Note that this is just theory at the moment, I don't have a test set up like this. But it should give you an idea of what's possible and in what way you can accomplish your needs. -
I've received an alert from Enterprise manager saying "Disk Group DATA_SID requires rebalance because at least one disk
is low on space". My colleague who I would go to with this question is unavailable, so this is a learning opportunity
for me. So far google and Oracle documentation have provided lots of information, but nothing that answers my questions.
I've run the following query on both the primary and standby databases ASM instances:
select name, disk_number, sector_size,os_mb, total_mb, free_mb, redundancy from v$asm_disk;
On the primary I get 4810M Free space and 18431M Total Space
on the standby I get 1248M Free space and 18431M Total Space -- this is the one that complained via OEM
When I run the following query in the database instance:
select sum(bytes)/1024/1024 MB from dba_segments;
I get 3736.75M as a result.
My questions are:
1. Will OEM's suggestion to rebalance the disk actually help in this situation since the instance is set up with external redundancy?
2. If I've got 18G of space and only 3.7G of data, why is OEM complaining?
3. How can I reclaim what I presume is allocated but unused space in my problem disk group?
4. How can I determine what extra data the standby has that the primary doesn't since both have the same total space allocation, but different amounts of free space?Thank you for the reply. That link is very good.
We are an 11.1 version of our database. Linus is OEL 5.6.
So, looking at the portion of the link that refers to 'Add Standby database and Instances to the OCR' - If we use SRVCTL to give the STANDBY the role of ‘physical_standby’ and the start option of ‘mount’, what effect will that have if the STANDBY becomes our PRIMARY?
Would these database settings need to be modified manually with SRVCTL each time?
We understand why the instance is not starting when the node is rebooted, we are looking for a best practice of how this is implemented.

Cascading physical standby from another physical standby for primary rac
my supplier told me that is possible mount a cascade physical standby from a physical standby for my rac installation.
but according the note "409013.1" seems not:
"Cascading a logical or physical standby database from a physical standby database is supported as long as the primary database is not a RAC database and is not part of a Data Guard Broker configuration - the support status of this configuration is unchanged from previous documentation."
before was possible? do you know why not now?

RajYou should be able to start the media recovery on any standby node. Just check your SERVICE_NAME on the primary that you use on the log_archive_dest also accounts for the new instance of the standby.
Referring to your problem, make sure you stopped the MRP on the prior node before trying to start it on the new node.
Only one node can be running the MRP0, writing to the standby database. The others can be mounted (or even opened read only in case of active dataguard configuration - license) but not running the managed recovery process. -

Your cluster is absolutely fine there is nothing wrong with your
settings, and as the kjs logs says that the backup server is also fine
(taking over as primary). Actually the problem is with the application
which you are trying to access in a distributed manner.
By default the fortune application is not registered as distributed,
but if you want to have it distributed, than please make these changes
in the iAS registry:
- run kregedit
- go to iplanet/Application Server/6.0/J2EE-Module/fortune node
than
- insert your domain name value in session-domain key.
- modify the session-impl key value to distributed from lite.
- insert the session-path key value as / (slash)
- ensure that the key session-dsync-type is dsync-distributed
at the end, your key values should look like this -
- session-domain=your.domain.name
- session-dsync-type=dsync-distributed
- session-impl=distributed
- session-path=/
Note: you should make these changes in the registry of all the iAS
servers that are participating in your cluster, or you can redeloy the
fortune app. on all the servers, with appripriate deployment
descriptor.
Change the load balancing method for all iAS servers to Round
Robin(Web connector Driven). You can do it from iAS admin tool, go to
Load Balancing tab and change it.
Than restart the two web servers(iws) and the two iAS servers in the
cluster.
Note: start the highest priority server first.
Now you should be able to have the distributed session with fortune
also.
The clustering and the distributed session failover can be better seen
through the clustering examples/samples provided with iAS, like
clustering-servlet and clustering-jsp.

9i RAC to single standby DB with Data guard

I have a question, Im trying to set up a standby database.
The primary DB would be a two node 9i RAC R2, to a one single standby DB.
I done this already. My question is if I can use data guard with this type of configuration. I have try to configured it with OEM and the GUI does not support this.
does any one know if this can be achieve using dataguard's CLI??

please explain.There seems to be some kind of misunderstanding here. You cannot create a secondary index on a cluster table. A cluster table does not exist as a separate physical table in the database; it is part of a "physical cluster". In the case of BSEG for instance, the physical cluster is RFBLG. The only fields of the cluster table that also exist as fields of the physical cluster are the leading fields of the primary key. Taking again BSEG as the example, the primary key includes the fields MANDT, BUKRS, BELNR, GJAHR, BUZEI. If you look at the structure of the RFBLG table, you will see that it has primary key fields MANDT, BUKRS, BELNR, GJAHR, PAGENO. The first four fields are those that all cluster tables inside BSEG have in common. The fifth field, PAGENO, is a "technical" field giving the sequence number of the current record in the series of cluster records sharing the same primary key.
All the "functional" fields of the cluster table (for BSEG this is field BUZEI and everything beyond that) exist only inside a raw binary object. The database does not know about these fields, it only sees the raw object (the field VARDATA of the physical cluster). Since the field does not exist in the database, it is impossible to create a secondary index on it. If you try to create a secondary index on a cluster table in transaction SE11, you will therefore rightly get the error "Index maintenance only possible for transparent tables".
Theoretically you could get around this by converting the cluster table to a transparent table. You can do this in the SAP dictionary. However, in practice this is almost never a good solution. The table becomes much larger (clusters are compressed) and you lose the advantage that related records are stored close to each other (the main reason for having cluster tables in the first place). Apart from the performance and disk space hit, converting a big cluster table like BSEG to transparent would take extremely long.
In cases where "indexing" of fields of a cluster table is worthwhile, SAP has constructed "indexing tables" around the cluster. For example, around BSEG there are transparent tables like BSIS, BSAS, etc. Other clusters normally do not have this, but that simply means there is no reason for having it. I have worked with the SAP dictionary for over 12 years and I have never met a single case where it was necessary to convert a cluster to transparent.
If you try to select on specific values of a non-transparent field in a cluster without also specifying selections for the primary key, then the database will have to do a serial read of the whole physical cluster (and the ABAP DB interface will have to decompress every single record to extract the fields). The performance of that is monstrous -- maybe that was the reason of your question. However, the solution then is (in the case of BSEG) to query via one of the index tables (where you are free to create secondary indexes since those tables are transparent). -
When request is submitted it goes for pending standby for long time

When im running oracle standard report on production its going to Pending Standby for long time and then it works normally whereas when i run the same report on clone server it directly runs without making any wait. Can anyone advice me what could be the issue related to this. Im unable to get to the root cause, so need your advice.

Updating standby database from primary using rman
I have created a standby database using rman on my oracle linux server, now i want to update the standby from my primary database, but i didn't remember the scn which i used for creating the standby. How can i find out the scn from where i should perform the incremental backup on the primary, so that i can update my standby database with the latest information.
You simply need to find out which logs on the Primary have yet to be applied to your Standby. Have a look at this (or any Oracle Data Guard docs.): http://www.stanford.edu/dept/itss/docs/oracle/10g/server.101/b10823/manage_ps.htm#1024046
As long as the logs are available on the Primary server, then they should be sent across to the Standby server. Use the views described in the above link to check for any gaps, etc. -
How to pass values for compound primary keys for updating the record in db.
i have a entity bean in my ejb with two primary keys to it...eg. roleid,rolename...
when iam retriving the record i use only one primary key ...so again to modify and update he same record which i retrived is a pbm..
i cannot set the values for the compoundpk,,,
but i can do the update for the bean with single primary key..
i need to know how to pass the values/parameters for the coumpound primary key in my update method...

Active/Standby failover automatic primary active
I have 2 ASAs 5510 with same physical configuration and running ok with active/standby failover mode. Like we have PREEMPT command in active/active failover to get back primary active after its been rebooted from failed mode. This command makes primary back to active and makes secondary firewall standby automatically.
Need help to know any such command for active/standby failover for automatic primary active. Currently we have to use command FAILOVER ACTIVE on primary to make it active manually.Remember, failover in ASA works differently than HSRP. ASA does NOT use
HSRP. Furthermore, there is NO HSRP ip address in ASA either. You are
talking about two different technologies.
Think of it this way. HSRP technology works very similar to VRRP and
Juniper NSRP. All of these technologies use virtual IP address. If you
have two devices, you will have an Virtual IP address, in addition
to the physical ip addresses of the two devices. ASA does not use the
extra VIP.
