Siri doesn't recognize my daughter's nickname... Never spells it right.

My daughter's name is Alison, and I have a contact for her and have told Siri she's my daughter. Her nickname, is Ali and is entered into the nickname field in Contacts. Siri doesn't recognize it. If I say, "Send a text to Ali," she says "To whom should I send it?" If I use the name "Ali" in a document, email, or text, I get "Allie" or "Alley" but never "Ali." There is no phonetic nickname field. I've tried phonetic first name, but it doesn't work. Short of listing her first name as "Ali" (getting rid of "Alison" altogether) and using the phonetic first name field (which some users have suggested doing but with only mixed results), is there any way to teach Siri to spell Ali's name correctly and to recognize her nickname when being asked to perform actions? This is a minor but persistent nuisance. Thanks for any help you all may have!

You may find SIRI to be a slow learner. Who, BTW, is akin to Skynet of Terminator fame. The phone's main involvement is digitizing your mumblings and handing all over to some processing center God-knows-where, for military-grade technology to try and come up with something to utter back. If it can't contact the mother ship, it will time out and spew the generic "can't help you now, try later" blurb. All this courtesy of the Stanford Research Institute who developed this for the US/DOD a few years back. Hence the moniker. Back to our regularly scheduled programming after this history flash.
Have patience and Silly Siri may eventually get it.  It's supposed to learn.
If you want a bit of Siri Comic Relief, try and catch the Big Bang Theory episode where Raj falls in love with Siri, who's the only female he can talk to without being half drunk....

  • Siri doesn't recognize podcasts in 7.1

Apple giveth and Apple taketh away. Siri doesn't recognize podcast again anymore. I typically listen to them through a hands-free Bluetooth kit which is great because I can't use my hands. But now I get this:
"Sorry Paul, I can't play podcasts for you"
This issue was also present when IOS 7 was initially released but was restored in 7.0.1 or something. Now it's an issue again.Being disabled this is a big deal for me. It's certainly going to cut down on my enjoyment of podcasts. This makes no sense at all. I'm getting really tired of this Apple.
Unless I'm missing something here? Has anybody else managed to get this to work in iOS 7.1?

Yeah I know that. Other than expressing my frustration the main reason I wanted to post this here is to see if others had noticed this as well or perhaps even got it to work somehow. I neglected to mention that in my original post but it is fixed now. Sorry about that.

  • Siri Doesn't Recognize Custom Phone Labels

This is a problem for all my contacts with multiple names/phone numbers.  Hopefully, you can help....
I have custom labels for my friends Jim & Kathy's Cell phones in my contacts.  One is labeled "Jim" and the other "Kathy".  Using Siri, if I say "Call Jim", I am asked if I want home, work, Jim or Kathy.  When I say "Jim", Siri responds with the same question.  It is a circular loop.  I tried "Jmobile" and "Jim Cell" for labels with the same result.  Can I teach Siri to call my phone numbers with custom labels?
Alternately, I tried using the native "mobile" labels and had their name listed after the phone number (6173454334 Jim), but Siri dials the number plus the corresponding numbers for "Jim", which my carrier rejects.
I really don't want to separate my contacts because I synchronize everything with Outlook and Outlook doesn't manage relationships like the iPhone (can't link contacts together).  This makes managing my list of friends and family more difficult than it needs to be.  Moving off of Outlook is not an option at this time (we use the Outlook calendar in an unusual way that no app has been able to replicate for us yet).
I just want to use Siri to call my contacts when I have multiple phone numbers and names in the same contact card.  Anyone know of a way to do that?  Much appreciated!

I have the same issue above. Very frustrating. Anyone have any ideas to work around this?

  • The new update 31.3.0 doesn't recognize any of my "nicknames"

I used to be able to type in a nickname and it would put in the email address. That is no longer working.

Seems to be still working here in TB31.3.0
Granted, it doesn't show the nickname it's matching to, but it finds the connected email addresses.

  • SIRI doesn't recognize my girlfriend's name anymore

A couple of days ago, I was trying to get SIRI to text (and eventually call) my girlfriend while I was driving to her place.  I fought with SIRI for the entire trip, and she just wouldn't recognize my girlfriend's name anymore-- she just kept telling me that she couldn't find [a different name that sounds somewhat similar] in my contacts list.  No matter how much I tried to speak her name clearly, or with different emphasis, SIRI just kept thinking I was saying this other name.
I asked my girlfriend if she's had a similar issue, and she said that she noticed around the same time that SIRI is pronouncing my name differently than it used to, but at least it's still detecting my name correctly.
Did the SIRI servers get updated with different logic or something recently?  It would be really stupid if I had to give my girlfriend a different name in my contacts list just because SIRI has decided she can't read anymore.

Siri does learn and adapt to your pronunciation
in under few days. If you will turn sire off and on it starts that process from the very beginning.
That did sound like a joke, but Apple confirms that it is true!
If you like, you can reset what Siri has learned about your voice by turning Siri off and then back on in Settings > General > Siri.

  • Siri doesn't recognize my email account

My iphone 4s is set up with my work email account.  When I ask Siri to send an email she responds that there is no email account set up.  Any idea how to fix this issue?

I have the same issue.  My email address in my profile is set to "work" yet when I ask Siri to "Send email to work," she says, "There's no work email address for <me>.  Would you like to use the <my work email address> instead?"
Uhhh, yes, that's the email address I have designated as "work", Siri!
    Not sure why she's confused.

  • My Ipod Touch Won't Charge Properly and My Laptop doesn't recognize it.

Everything was fine until this morning.
I was charging my iPod Touch while my daughter and I were playing with it. Since I have to do some errands, I removed the charger even though the battery was not yet full. I did played a bit, even took some photos. After an hour or so I decided to plug in the charger again. I was waiting for the BEEP sound it does whenever it charges, but it didn't make any beep sound nor the battery display didn't turned green. I tried plugging it on my laptop, and my laptop just gives me a message saying it doesn't recognize the device. So I went to borrow my mom's speaker (she have an iPhone and charges it using a speaker for iPhones/iPods since her own charger is broken), it still doesn't charge but when I play music on my pod, the speaker reads it. So I tried turning off then turning on my iPod, same thing happens, still not charging. So I asked my brother about it, he said I should try pressing the home button and power button for 10 secs til the Apple logo appears while charger is plugged. So I did, then VOILA... the much awaited BEEP sound and the green battery.. IT IS CHARGING!!!... so I left it for like two hours, expecting the battery would be full (waiting for the plug icon on the battery)... but all I got is like a 99% green. So I left it charging for 10 more minutes. Still the same after ten minutes, and gave it another ten minutes, still the same again. So I unplugged the charger and replug it again... I went back to NO BEEP, NO GREEN BATTERY CHARGING SIGN. I did the hold for ten seconds home and power button til the Apple logo appears, there goes again the beep and the green battery. I checked it again... it seems like I need to do the ten seconds home and power button press every time I plug in the charger.
Now I tried it on my laptop, same troubleshoot, but this time, it didn't give a beep sound nor a green battery sign. My laptop still doesn't recognize the device. I dunno what to do. Please help me. It's really frustrating me. I tried looking for answers online but only got the same troubleshooting I did.

I tried this just now, my iPod did showed a

  • ITunes 11.1 doesn't recognize my iPhone 4s with IOS 7 - phone is charging by iTunes doesn't see it.  Any suggestions?

I upgraded my daughter's iMac to iTunes 11.1 and now it doesn't recognize her iPhone 4s.  The phone will charge and DropBox see's it but iTunes doesn't.  Any suggestions?  I've already uninstalled and reinstalled the software so that doesn't work.  Thanks for any help!

    Hello jlgougeon,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
For more information on this, take a look at:
iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Mac OS X
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1591
Follow these steps to resolve your issue:
Ensure that your Mac meets the minimum system requirements for your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
Install software updates on your Mac.
Note: If an iTunes update is available, apply the update.http://apple.com/itunes/download
Check USB connections. iOS devices require USB 2.0 to function properly. If you're not sure your Mac has USB 2.0 ports, refer to the computer's specifications.
Disconnect other USB devices and connect your device directly to a USB port on your Mac.
    Restart your Mac.
    Best of luck,
    Mario

  • TS4079 Siri doesn't understand me

I am a Londoner and Siri doesn't understand me! Why is that.. I talk full English but he don't type what I ask... What am I doin wrong?

It appears that Siri is an Internet-server-based service.  I personally was not aware of that until now.  Voice-to-text in Mail started failing, and then I tried plain old Siri, and it said that it couldn't connect to the network.
Sounds like Apple needs to add a few more servers!
Anyway, it knows your name by looking at your address-book entry.  I noticed that it would occasionally say things like, "sorry me, I can't do that."  I had created a nickname for myself, many years ago, of "me" so that I could quickly add myself to the CC list of an Email message.  When I removed that nickname it started using my real name instead.

  • ITunes doesn't recognize either of my iPods

I downloaded the latest update recently and since then iTunes doesn't recognize either of my two iPod touches (4th gen), even though the computer does. My iPad (1st gen) is still recognized normally. I tried uninstalling iTunes and reinstalling it several times, and that didn't work. The iPods are recognized by iTunes on other computers. The computer in question runs windows 8.1, if that makes a difference. From the look of these forums it looks like I'm not the only one who has this problem. Please help.
