Site to Site VPN with 2 ASA 5510's

Hello guys,
Im hoping yall can help me with the following objective. I have been tasked to make a site to site VPN between two networks. We are both using an ASA 5510.
This is the scenario:
SiteA has an wan adress of (example) 20.20.20.20  - The firewall is connected to a DMZ range : 192.168.0.0 255.255.255.0. In this range there is another firewall which grants/blocks acces to the internal range. 10.20.0.0 255.255.0.0
SiteB has an wan adress of (example) 21.21.21.21 - The internal range is 10.0.0.0 255.0.0.0 No DMZ.
How can i connect these 2 devices since there is an overlap. I am gonna need to use nat right? Can someone give me readable  Access rule/Nat Rule and maybe advice / some other things i need to think of.

Well regarding the remote site I suppose if they are using hosts from ranges 10.0.1.0/24 and 10.0.2.0/24 they could simply NAT these portions of the network towards the L2L VPN connection. For example NAT them to subnets 192.168.101.0/24 and 192.168.102.0/24
But you also seem to have a large subnet on your side since its 10.20.0.0/16. Because of this I would suggest narrowing it down to the hosts or smaller subnets like above with the remote site because simply NATing the whole subnet 10.20.0.0/16 to some other private range that is NOT from the 10.0.0.0/8 range would probably cause problems in the long run.
Lets presume that on your side the network that needs to access the L2L VPN is 10.20.1.0/24 and we would NAT that to 192.168.201.0/24 then your NAT configuration could look like this

In the above configuration we first create an "object" for both the actual internal DMZ subnet and the subnet that we will NAT it to. Then we create an "object-group" that will have inside it both of the remote NATed networks (NAT performed at the remote site).
Finally the "nat" command itself will perform NAT between "dmz" and "outside" interface and it will NAT "DMZ-INTERNAL" to "DMZ-INTERNAL-NAT" when the destination is "REMOTE-NETWORKS". The NAT configuration is bidirectional so it naturally handles which ever directin the connection is attempted. The names of the objects are up to the user.
The ACL that defines the local and remote networks for the L2L VPN should use the NAT subnets of each site.
If you want to restrict the traffic from the remote site then this can be done in a couple of ways. At its default settings the ASA will allow ALL traffic from the remote site behind the L2L VPN connection.
You can use the command "show run all sysopt" to list some configurations that will tell us how your ASA has been set to handle VPN related traffic. The command we are looking for is "sysopt connection permit-vpn". This is the default setting that allows all traffic from VPN connections. If you were to change this to "no sysopt connection permit-vpn" then you could simply use the interface ACL of the interface that terminates the L2L VPN connection on your side to select what traffic is allowed. You would allow traffic the same way as if you were allowing traffic from Internet to your servers.
The problem with this setup is if you have other existing VPN connections (VPN Client and L2L VPN) because they would also require their traffic to be allowed in your external interfaces ACL if you changed the above mentioned global setting.
The other option is to configure a VPN Filter ACL that you will then attach to a "group-policy". You will then attach that "group-policy" to the "tunnel-group" of the L2L VPN connection.
The actual ACL used for the VPN Filter purpose is a norma ACL but you will always have to configure the remote network as the source in the ACL and this usually causes some confusion.

    Can someone please share your knowledge to help me find why I am not able to receive an IP address on remote access VPN connection while I can get an IP address on local DHCP pool?
    I am trying to setup remote access VPN with ASA 5510. It works with local dhcp pool but doesn't seem to work when I tried using an existing DHCP server. It is being tested in an internal network as follows:

    It has to be configured on both sides.
    X and Y are unused networks in this example: Site A has to hide 172.16.1.0/24 behind X when communicating to Y, site B has to hide 172.16.1.0/24 behind Y when communicating to X. The users in site A have to use Y as a destination, users in site B have to use X as destination. To make it usable for the users you should include the destinations in the DNS so that they never need the destination-IP.
    On the ASA you describe the communication 172.16.1.0/24 -> Y with an access-list and add that ACL to your static-command. You find an example here:

  • RV042 Site-to-Stie VPN with NAT on one side

    I set up a site-to-site VPN using two RV042s some time ago.  One was behind a NATting router.  The other was the internet interface itself.
    Somewhere I had found a paper describing how to do this.  It said that only ONE of them could be behind another NATting router.  So, that's how this was set up.  I sure wish I could find that paper again!!!  Any suggestions?
    Now I have to do the same thing again but can't get it working.  It looks like this:
    RV042 VPN public address <> cable modem <> internet <> RV042 "firewall" with IPSEC passthrough enabled <> interim subnet LAN <> RV042 VPN <> LAN
    I'm getting log messages and on the remote site log (the left side of the above) like:
    initial Aggressive Mode packet claiming to be from [xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx] on [same] but no connection has been authorized 
    and
    No suitable connection for peer '10.98.76.2', Please check Phase 1 ID value 
    (where 10.98.76.2 is the IP address of the RV042 WAN port on the interim subnet)
    I have them both in Aggressive mode as eventually I'll be using a dyndns url.  But, for now, I'm using the actual IP addresses so that should not be an issue one way or the other..

    make sure the configuration u do on both the side should be same....and secondly exempt the NAT rules then only it will work.

  • DMVPN Configuration with ASA 5510 In Front of Cisco 877-K9 HUB Router

    I'm in a mess, I have  Cisco 877-K9 router which sits behind an ASA 5510 FW.
    The Design :
    Cisco 877-K9 DSL router (DSL with Static IP) ( DMVPN HUB )
    ||
    ASA 5510 Firewall (Outside INT with Static IP / Inside INT LAN) (PAT & ACL)
    ||
    Switch
    ||
    LAN
    Now my problem is, My Dmvpn configuration works just fine, I'm able to ping from my Cisco 877 to any Spoke & vise versa.
    I'm also able to Ping from my LAN to any Spoke Tunnel IP, but Im not  able to ping any LAN IP at Spoke site nor am I able to ping my LAN from  any Spoke site.
    I've googled alot but have come at designs where the ASA's are behind the Cisco Routers and not infront.
    Any help in this regards is highly appreciated. I really need this to work. Attached are the config files....

    Thanks to both of you guys for replying. I should've been more descriptive in my initial post, but just thought of getting more ideas.
    All the troubleshooting was done before posting the problem, and to clearify the things, Please find below the results.
    1) what RProtocol r u using?
    a) It's OSPF
    2) if ur using OSPF, try show ip route on the hub and spoke to verify the hub/spoke routes are learned via OSPF
    a) I did the "show ip route" and bothe the HUB and Spokes get their routes defined
        (on the HUB if I used "network 192.9.201.0 255.255.255.0 area 0" I coudln't get routes advertised on spokes)
        (I changed to "redistribute static subnests" and I was able to get Hub routes advertised")
    3) are your tunnels config correctly? try show crypto ipsec sa
    a) They are as they should be and "show crypto ipsec sa" comes up with proper in/out encrypted data
    4) on your hub'spoke do a debug ip icmp
    a) Did that as well, and If I do a debug on a Spoke and ping from my HUB to that spoke on the tunnel IP, I get proper src/dest results, but If I ping from HUB to Spoke on a client IP behind the Spoke, It pings but does not show any result on the Spoke debug.
    I'm able to ping all the Spoke's Tunnel IPs and clients behind the Spokes from the HUB router, but not from either the ASA nor the clients on my LAN.
    Additional to the info above, Please also note :
    I did notice something that, from my HUB router, which is also my DSL Modem, I'm unable to ping any clients behind the ASA.
    So I guess I'm stuck on the point that My Cisco HUB is unable to talk to  my LAN, If I can get the HUB to talk to the internal LAN, I would be  able to ping clients on LAN from any Spoke or clients behind Spokes.
    From HUB router I'm able to ping clients behind Spokes.
    Does that give any Ideas ?

  • ASA 5505 Easy VPN to ASA 5510 Question

    I am working on configuring ASA 5505's for some of our remote offices to connect to our 5510 at HQ.. I have the 5505's configured and running using Easy VPN since they will be getting their IP addresses dynamically.
    From a computer connected to the ASA I can connect to and ping all of my servers at HQ. From HQ I can't ping the computer or RDP to it.
    I haven't done this type of a config in years so I'm unsure of what I need to change. It seems to me that the routes aren't populating at the HQ to get to the 5505's. I was reading up on Reverse Route Injection and that seems like the right answer. I wanted to get some other ideas before I made any changes to the 5510.
    Any thoughts or tips would be appreciated.

    EzVPN might get funky sometimes. Have you looked into something like a "dynamic to static Lan to Lan" ?
    If you are using EzVPN on the branch becuase you have a dynamic IP, you might want to give it a shot.

    The config example uses a PIX 6.3 as remote, but the configuration on the remote site should be the same as any other L2L config. The one that changes is the one at the HQ where you need to configure a Default L2L group to accept the dynamic connections.

  • ASA 5505 Site-to-Site VPN to remote dmz access

    I don't have a ton of experience with ASA firewalls, but I've searched everywhere and I can't seem to find a solution to this.
    I have 2 sites connected by a Site-to-Site VPN with ASAs (5540 on Site 1, 5505 on Site 2). I'm using ASDM.
    Lets call:
    Site 1 LAN: 192.168.1.0
    Site 2 LAN: 192.168.2.0
    Site 2 DMZ: 172.16.2.0
    Traffic from Site 1 to Site 2 is perfect moving across the LANs. My workstation (192.168.1.10) can ping anything in site 2s LAN (192.168.2.0/24).
    Recently, I added a UniFi WAP device to Site 2 DMZ. Since I want to be able to manage this DMZ WAP from the LAN with a management server, I created a network object in Site 2s ASA. I called this object DMZ_WAP. IP address 172.16.2.2. I checked the box for "Add Automatic Address Translation Rules" and configured Type to "Static" and Translated Addr to "192.168.2.8." Source interface DMZ to Any destination interface. This of course created 2 "Network Object" NAT rules.
    I then created a DMZ incoming rule that says Source: DMZ_WAP, Destination: net_site1_lan (this object was of course created for the site to site vpn), allow all IP traffic. I created an Outside incoming rule that says net_site1_lan can access DMZ_WAP.
    Awesome, I can now ping 192.168.2.8 from anywhere within Site 2. The problem is... I can't ping 192.168.2.8 from my workstation in site 1 (192.168.1.10). If I run Packet Tracer (interface dmz, packet type TCP, source 172.16.2.2 port "echo", destination 192.168.1.10 port "echo") everything turns up green checkmark, the packet is allowed. So why do I have no contact?
    I apologize, as I realize ASDM isnt what most of you probably use. But anyone have any ideas? Been researching this for about 4 hours now, perhaps I'm barking up the wrong tree.

Probably, the basic configuration for both asa and IOS routers are nat config. So, this particular document might be useful for your requirement

    Im hoping anyone can help me because i cant seem to figure it out. I managed to create an site to site vpn between location a an b.
    I will be using fictional wan adresses.
    SiteA 20.20.20.20
    SiteB 21.21.21.21
    Site B is a very simple netwerk. We have a Asa 5505 and directly plugged into this ASA is my computer. I get an DHCP adress from the asa etc. I use the range 192.168.1.0 /24 for this.
    Site A is a little bit more complex. I have ASA 5510 with 2 configured interfaces. Outside (Called WAN) and Inside (called DMZ)
    The DMZ uses the range 192.168.200.0 /24
    Inside the DMZ i have another firewall (UTM appliance) configured at(this is a fictional ip adress) 192.168.200.1
    This firewall serves as gateway for the lan and also has 2 interfaces. One on the LAN side and one on the DMZ side. (DMZ 192.168.200.1 - LAN 10.1.1.254) The ASA has a static route configured towards the LAN.
    How can i create a site to site from Site A's LAN to SiteBs. I have managed to create a Site to Site to A's DMZ. This works. I can RDP and PING adresses in the DMZ but whenever i try to reach the lan i get no reply. My first suspicion was that the UTM would block it but i cant find anything in its log files.
    Would love some input. (i created the site to site using the GUI)

    I think you should be able to do it. You just need to allow the required ports for LAN to LAN VPN like UDP 500 , ESP , 4500 etc.
    Use NAT exempt on the UTM and add the Subnet to the Crypto ACL on the ASA device on both the Sides.
    This should be able to do it.

I used the VPN Site-to-site wizard in ASDM on both devices and followed the instructions for the wizard to the letter. However I don't seem able to get any kind of VPN up and running.   • Cisco ASA 5510 Site to Site VPN with Sonicwall

    I am trying to setup a VPN tunnel between a Cisco ASA 5510 (Version 8.2(2)) and Sonicwall TZ200. I got tunnel up and going and I am able to ping the Cisco ASA internal IP from the Sonicwall LAN but nothing else works. When I try to ping a host behind the Cisco ASA from the Sonicwall LAN I get the following message "Asymmetric NAT rules matched for forward and reverse flows; Connection for tcp src outside:10.20.10.x/xxxx dst inside:10.20.2.x/xxxx denied due to NAT reverse path failures" on the ASA
    Googling the above error shows issues with version 8.3 and later which looked like the nat commands were changed but the ASA I am working on is still on 8.2 and the other common issue is not adding a NAT exemption. I have double-triple checked that I did add a NAT exception rule from the hosts on the cisco network to the hosts on the Sonicwall network. Seems like I have hit a road block so any help would be appreciated. Thanks

  • No Internet Access ASA 5510 with Site to Site VPN

    I have inherited an ASA5510.
    We have configured a site to site VPN between it and a Juniper SRX550. The Site to Site VPN works fine but users behind the ASA can not see the Internet. I'm pretty sure I'm missing something. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Cisco ASA Site to Site VPN with routers on inside

    I have been asked to setup a site to site vpn to connect two remote offices.
    We have two ASA 5510's, one on each side.
    I can get the two ASA's setup and setup the VPN and have everything work like it is suppose to. Traffic passing from local network to remote network.
    However, I have been asked to add two secure routers to the setup. One secure router between the local network and the ASA, and the other the same on the other end, between the remote network and it's ASA
    Essentially, just like this:

    I don't understand how this is suppose to work. I can get each side configured so that the clients on the inside can get out to the internet.
    A local client using the inside interface of the router as the gateway, the router then sends by route this traffic to the ASA's inside interface which then forwards the traffic to the default route/gateway of the ASA to the ISP gateway out to the internet.
    However, when I am thinking about the VPN I don't understand how it is suppose to work. Because the LAN address get's translated to the outside address of the Router which is 10.0.0.2, so that it goes to the ASA inside address 10.0.0.1. If I were to ping an ip address of the other LAN, it shows up as coming from 10.0.0.2 which wouldn't be part of the VPN traffic, since the VPN traffic is the local addresses as it was setup with just the two ASA's. I don't see changing the VPN traffic to the 10.0.0.0 network working because the clients on the remote network have 192.168.2.x addresses. While the ASA and router can translate from 192.168.1.x to 10.0.1.2 to the internet and back will work, I don't see requesting a connection to 192.168.2.x from 192.168.1.x working).
    If it matters, one router is a cisco 1841, and the other an hp 7102dl.
    I don't really understand why, but they just want to have the routers used in the setup. Whether it is on the inside or outside of the ASA, it doesn't matter.
    Can someone help me make sense of this please?

    To set it up the way you mention would I keep the ip addresses the same or would I need to change them?
    Also, in response to everyone, would setting it up using gre tunnel allow for some clients to still just go straight out to the internet as well as to the "other side" remote lan?

    In response to Jouni, yes there is a big L2 switch behind the ASA's, which under the new setup there would be a router between the L2 switch and the ASA.
    This may be an important part I don't understand, but on the router, unless I nat the inside traffic to have the address of the outside interface on the router, then no traffic goes through. I just get messages from the router saying unable to determine destination route seemingly regardless of what static routes I put on the router, but maybe I am just not configuring the static routes correctly.
