Site unreachable via FiOS in MA but reachable via ViOS in MD

I tried to reach the website istarusa.com from my home in MA and was unsuccessful. I was able to complete a tracert. I later noticed that, when I remoted into a desktop I have in MD which is also on FiOS, it was able to reach istarusa.com. So I checked from home again --still unreachable.
Main difference between the two tracerts:

I suspect a problem with some kind of paket loss or filtering between alter.net and Verizon, at least in the NYC/BOS peer connection

Alter.net IS Verizon.  So that isn't an issue.  The request time outs in your traces mean nothing.  It is common for some servers to not respond or respond so slowly that timeout occurs to tracert.  If servers after those servers in the trace respond with good times, you are not having a problem.
Since Cogent is reached in both your traces, I would suspect the problem might not be in Verizon at all.  There has also been many peering disputes with Cogent.
Someone else has commented about a bug that caused problems with CISCO routers and Border Gateway protocol where the tables exceed 512k.  They apparently did so when L3 sent a large upgrade (not their fault).  According to one article "

There are workarounds, and, of course the equipment could have been replaced. But, in all too many cases this was not done".
Verizon may or may not have fixed their CISCO servers.  DItto fo COGENT and others.

    Is the requests/packets encrypted for external user requests? You can analyze by using HTTPWatch to analyze where the bottleneck/delay is with the response times. Run internal request, and external request and compare reports.

  • I have a new printer which behaves OK except it will not print directly from a web site accessed via Firefox. We do not have this problem if accessed via another browser. Suggestions?

    New printer is Brother MFCJ615W. OS is XP. Computer is quite old Dell. Printer also refuses to print pictures from .jpg files - but the fact that I can print direct from web sites accessed via another browser suggests some of the problem is with Firefox. I asked this a few days ago and got an email reply giving me a link to click on - but this only produced an error message.

    I think I solved the wifi connection problem, just by switching off completely the router! sounds trivial, but in this case it worked!!!
    the funny behaviour of the trackpad/cursor still persists. any suggestion???

    If it is any consolation this started happening to me today. I am in Toronto. I am wondering if there is a copyright issue here. I have done nothing to solve it - mostly because I suspect this has nothing to do with my computer.
    p.s. My speculation about copyright is not correct. Comedy Central plays fine with Google Chrome. Have not yet tested Firefox.

    Installing the OS X Lion Update 10.7.3 (Client Combo) will reinstall the App Store for you.
    Restart your Mac after the combo is installed then try purchasing Aperture.

    With the site on display, click on the site identity button (for details on what that is see [https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Site+Identity+Button]) and then on More Information. This will open up the page info dialog.
    First select the Permissions panel, make sure that "Load Images" is set to allow (selecting Use Default should also work)
    Next select the Media panel, then click on the first item in the list. Use the down arrow key to scroll through the list. If any item has the option "Block images from (domain name)" selected, de-select the option.
    This should hopefully resolve your issue, but also see https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Images+or+animations+do+not+show
    Some add-ons can also block images, for example if you have AdBlock Plus installed, make sure that you have not accidentally created a filter to block the images.

  • After a notice of update, I was unable to use iTunes. It said I had a missing dll file and a Windows error 7. I removed iTunes and tried to reinstall. I selected the download items off the apple site. It says thank you but still not there.

    Having problems downloading iTunes. After an update notice, I was unable to open iTunes. I de-installed and attempted to reinstall it and it still won't open.
    The first error duirn the update was a dll file missing, then a Windows error 7. The screen on the Apple site say  Thank you for downloading, but still not there.

    A msi file is short for microsoft installer.  It normally is for installation, removal, and maintenance for a program. So iTunes.msi would be used for the updating of the program.  For some reason it isnt finding this so we can't update, install, or remove it.
    From what I have seen windows installer cleanup utility solved related problems before. 
    I found this forum about removing and installing a new iTunes.  It was about someone who was trying to isntall iTunes, and was looking for msi file and asked for help.   Using this should allow you to be able to install iTunes.  It won't give you the msi file but will allow you to isntall iTunes over again.
    This was what was said.
    Another option in case you can't get an msi. (Or even if you can ... the msi's mentioned in the messages may be damaged rather than missing.)
    Unfortunately, this sort of trouble has gotten more complicated to deal with ever since Microsoft pulled the Windows Installer CleanUp utility from their Download Center on June 25. First we have to find a copy of the utility.
    Let's try Googling. (Best not to use Bing, I think.) Look for a working download site for at least version 3.0 of the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (The results from mydigitallife and Major Geeks are worth checking.)
    After downloading the utility installer file (msicuu2.exe), scan the file for malware, just in case. (I use the free version of Malwarebytes AntiMalware to do single-file scans for that.)
    If the file is clean, to install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you've downloaded.
    Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"). In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any iTunes entries and click "Remove".
    Restart the PC, and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?

    That problem can be caused by the Yahoo! Toolbar that extents too much downwards and covers the top part of the browser window and thus makes links in that part of the screen not clickable.

  • User sites unreachable after weekly script run

    Server 10.3.9 on both my webserver and on my Xserve with RAID where my user sites are hosted.
    I have sites hosted directly on my webserver and my user sites are served through the webserver but site on the Xserve, shared through Open Directory.
    Everything works awesome except every Saturday morning, after the weekly script runs on both machines at 4:30 a.m., my users sites are no longer available through the webserver. If I reboot the webserver they come back just fine.
    I've looked through the weekly script and nothing was obvious to me that would break this connection.
    Has anyone else seen this?

    Thanks for these tips. I've tried them and a few other things...
    It sounds, and I may be wrong, like you're proxying
    through your webserver to your file server for the
    user sites. The first thing will be to find out
    which machine is getting goofed up.
    Tomorrow, see if your regular websites are accessible
    after the script runs.
    The user sites are not available this morning through my webserver, as has been the case since installing the server in January. The regular (local) sites on the webserver are just fine.
    Try the user's sites directly
    from the file server, eliminating the webserver
    proxying.
    I don't usually run the webserver on my file server but I did fire it up this morning and was able to reach the user sites through it.
    If both of those are okay, then setup a
    terminal window on each machine, and on both machines
    do:
    tail -f /var/log/httpd/error_log
    and try hitting the user's sites through the
    webserver and see what messages come up on each
    machine, and post them.
    I don't get any error messages when accessing the user sites through the fileserver. I do get errors on the webserver when accessing user sites, saying "File does not exist:" then the path to the Network directory where the users site is. ( /Network/Servers/fileserver.address/Volumes/Home/username/Sites )
    This prompted me to try accessing user sites from one of my desktop machines (running OS X client 10.4.5) that is also connected to the fileserver with OD, and is running a webserver. That worked fine!
    I then tried to traverse the filesystem at the command line on my webserver to reach the users home sites and couldn't do it. I could do it on my desktop machine.
    So it appears that something on Server is breaking the AFP communication between the webserver and the fileserver when the periodic weekly scripts are run. I did try restarting AFP on the webserver just in case but that made no difference. I can't really restart AFP on the fileserver as I have users actively connected, but my guess is that is working just fine since I can access those shared volumes from my desktop machines.
    Instead of restarting whichever machine you've been
    restarting, try stopping and starting just the
    webserver to see if that takes care of the problem.
    I did try this and everything was the same as above.
    Strange that Server has this problem losing connection to AFP shares, but my clients don't. There isn't anything obvious to me in the weekly scripts that could cause this but I'll look again in case I missed this.
    Seems like others would have run across this??
    Note: a reboot of the webserver again this morning (after this testing) returned the users sites to my webserver. Doing an automatic reboot each week would be a kludge solution, but one that I really want to avoid if possible.
    Thanks for the troubleshooting tips. I hope you or someone else has some further advice...

    Ok, first thing, why are you doing anything with WAMP or XAMPP when you're running a Mac? MAMP should be what you want unless you're not explaining part of what you are trying to do.
    2nd thing, I haven't used MAMP in a while, but there are two possibilities for not seeing what you want to see once you have MAMP turned on. One possibility is that you already have "Web Sharing" turned on in your Sharing Preference Pane. If that is the case, port 80 will already be taken and you'll be seeing the default Apache install (files are stored at /Library/WebServer/Documents/). This would push MAMP to either not turn on it's web serving capabilities, or to push it to another port. The other possibility is that MAMP defaults to another port anyway. So instead of localhost, you might have to type in localhost:8080 or something similar. I believe the control panel that gets installed can take you to the currently MAMP-served page, and it can also help you change which port your serving on.
    80 is the default port for web serving and the ONLY port that will let you get straight to the server without having to type in webaddress.com:port# instead of just webaddress.com.

    Are you shooting RAW? Are you exporting masters or versions? Is there a size limitation on the Walgreens site?
