Skip audio on quiz slide

Hello Captivate Community,
I'm a long time lurker / dabbler finally putting Captivate  to use in some "real" projects.
I'm working with a quiz slide and I'm wondering if there is any way to control audio. I'd like the learner to be able to skip audio so I figured I could add a button to hide the audio object but I see that there is no way to add a button to a quiz slide.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Rick

Hello Lilybiri,
Thanks for your response. I'm against using the mute button as this is a global setting and would force the learner to unmute for other slides. And I don't think your other suggestion will work for my course flow. My scenario will work like this: Learner arrives at quiz slide and audio plays narrating question and answers. If the learner answers incorrectly they are forwarded to a video remediation. After remediation the learner is returned to the quiz slide to try again. At this point audio plays again and I would like to give the learner an option to skip audio, but I see I am probably out of luck.

  • Audio on last slide after quiz questions not playing

    Captivate v5.5
I have a project with a question pool and a series of random questions
The random question slides are without audio.
After finishing the question pool the project closes with the final slide which does have some audio - which runs fine when I test the slide.
However when I test the whole project (F12) the audio on the last slide does not play.
The audio on the slides prior to the random question slides plays without any problem.
    Any ideas please?
    Noel

    Anjaneai,
Thanks for the suggestion. But changing the question setting to infinite attempts will just allow the user to retry each question over and over until they get it correct. I want to give them one chance to answer each question for the entire quiz. Then, if they don't pass, they can try the entire quiz again.
I ended up finding a resolution, though. Based on one of the suggestions from this blog, I just shortened my slide time for each question to .5 sec (it was originally 3 sec). That seemed to do the trick!

  • Quiz slides inserted in project; subsequent slide has audio

    Hi,
I inserted a couple of quiz slides, true/false and multiple choice, in between 2 regular slides that have audio. When I run my project, I see the quiz slide, but the audio plays as if the quiz slides are not there. In other words, the audio for the subsequent slide plays while the quiz slide is displayed. For example:
    Slide 1 has audio
    Slide 2 is quiz
    Slide 3 is quiz
    Slide 4 has audio
When I play, my audio goes from slide 1 to slide 4, while displaying slide 2
I know I must have some basic setting incorrect. My quiz slides are set to On Success - Continue. The surrounding slides are set to On Enter - Continue, On Exit - No Action.
    Help!

In Captivate you can insert audio on objects, on a single slide, and across multiple slides.
Is it possible that your audio has been inserted to span more than one slide instead of slide-by-slides?
If for example you had originally added your audio to a number of timed slides, and then inserted more slides in between, you may have confused Captivate as to where the audio needed to play.
I may be on the wrong track here but thought it worth suggesting.

  • How to add an audio click box on a quiz slide - adobe captivate 6?

    Hi,
I'm trying to add an audio click box on a question slide. It works brilliantly on normal slides but theres no option to add a click box on quiz slides.
I'm trying to add audio on click. So, when somebody clicks that area they will hear a sound. Is there a way to do this on a question slide?
    Thanks

Replace those old click boxes by shapes configured as buttons. Have a look at this post:

  • Audio Delay After Random Quiz Slide

    Captivate PC Ver 7.0.0.118
I have text-to-speech audio narration on every slide which begins at .5 seconds. I have a random quiz question on slide X. On slide X+1, the audio narration takes a considerable amount of time to begin playing, upwards of 15 seconds when it should start at .5s.
I've tested many things. Ultimately removing the random quiz slide fixes the problem, but that is not an option. Moving the quiz slide backward or forward makes the problem consistent in which the audio is delayed on any slide which directly follows the quiz.
I've always set up my courses with intermittent quizzes for user engagement and have rarely encountered this issue to which I cannot find a cure. Any help would be awesome.
    Thank you.

    Hi,
Based on our experiences, we have encountered similar behavior.
Because RDP was oroginally designed to flush the video frame buffer to the client about once every 100 milliseconds.  While this is fine for most Windows GDI applications, graphic intensive applications, 3D applications and applications requiring
audio / video synchronization don’t fare so well.  With respect to streaming media in particular, RDP is only meant to cache the bitmap files (compressed) not the audio which is uncompressed over the wire.
    Quoted from this blog below:
Terminal Services and Graphically Intensive Applications
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/askperf/archive/2009/04/17/terminal-services-and-graphically-intensive-applications.aspx
In addition, there are also a few suggestions within the blog which could improve RDP session performance such as update drivers, increase network bandwidth and frame rate on the client side.
    Best Regards,
    Amy

  • Review Quiz skips over the first quiz slide during the review.

I created a project with 2 quiz slides and a quiz results slide.  When I review the quiz at the end of the project it rewinds to the first quiz slide but skips over it and then stops/pauses on the 2nd quiz slide (last slide in this case).  I do not have a transition set for the quiz slides, and the "On Enter" setting is set to continue.  The slide has an infinite number of attempts set for it and the Failure levels is 1.  Report answers is set.  I do not have the LMS reporting set up yet.  I was going to use an internal server or perhaps Moodle if I can get that working.

Did you remove any of the default captions from either of your quiz questions?  If so, delete those quiz question slides and add new ones from scratch.  Then test to see if the issue is resolved.

  • Quiz slide waits for Audio to finish before proceeding to next question

Hi guys, hope you can help. I have 5 questions with audio inside narrating the question and the answer in selection. Once you you have chosend your answer then click submit button..it waits until the audio finishes then proceeds to the next question.
    hope you can help
    Thank you

Having this action on Slide Exit of the Quiz Results slide may not work if the user clicks a button there to Review Quiz because that will mean that the last frame of the Quiz Results slide doesn't get played.
There is an internal Captivate system variable that gets set on each question slide when it's in Review Mode, but I don't think you can read this variable via Advanced Actions.  If you could read it, you could check it and then trigger the mute action on Slide Enter of each question slide.
UPDATE: Just thought of another possible workaround.  There's a system variable called cpInfoPrevSlide that records the last slide you visited before the current one.  You could use this in a conditional action to trigger cpCmndMute.  When the user clicks Review Quiz on the Quiz Results slide it will take them back to the first scoring object in the Quiz Scope. OnSlideEnter of this slide you need to check whether or not cpInfoPrevSlide is the Quiz Results slide, and if it is, set cpCmndMute to 1.  That should turn off the audio on the slides from then on.
For instruction audio on the Quiz Results slide I prefer to have the audio attached to a rollover caption.  That way, the user only gets the audio if they explicitly roll over the HELP button (or whatever you call it).

  • Can you make buttons appear "on success" on quiz slide?

I'm not an expert Captivate user and don't know Javascript, so please excuse my ignorance if this question seems strange.
I have a Captivate 6 project with several quiz slides peppered throughout the entire file. In other words, the quiz slides are not grouped together. Each slide, including the quiz slides, has a forward button and a back button.
I would like for users to move forward and backward through the presentation in a linear fashion as they like, and this is working well. However, it would be nice if users weren't able to skip answering the quiz questions. I would like the buttons to appear after the user has answered the quiz question correctly, and then I would like the buttons to stay on the slide thereafter.
Is this possible? Do you have a Javascript resource I could use for the "on success" action, or what other solutions do you recommend?
    Thank you!

    Hello,
When you are talking about the default buttons Back and Next that you find on question slides, you don't have much control over them. As you probably did see they do not even appear as separate objects on the timeline. And I doubt that Javascript could realize what you want.
Try first to understand how the work flow of question slides is designed:
    http://blog.lilybiri.com/question-question-slides-in-captivate
You can drag the Next button under the Clear button (see blog post), normally Next during a Quiz is not needed, since the second step (Press Y or click on the slide) will move to the next slide.
However the Back button is a more tricky button if you really want to have it. Maybe, didn't check it out, try to hide the back button to the user (make it transparent without a stroke) and have an image appear on top of that button after the first step on the question slide. The invisible Back under the image will remain active, it even has absolute priority over other objects.

  • CP7 - quiz slides continue to play after timeline

I'm using quiz slides with audio in Captivate 7.
The audio plays, I choose an answer and click Submit, then click Y to continue, and whether I'm right or wrong, the playbar is only 1/2 - 2/3 way through the slide.  So I have to wait while the slide plays out, long after the audio (and the slide) ends.
The Results slide that follows is hidden, with the option turned off in Preferences, so the quiz slide is usually the last slide of the project.
Does anyone know what's going on?
    Thanks for any help,
    Marion

Default pausing point for question slides (and score slide) is half its timeline. With the default timeline duration of 3 secs this means that after the two-step process still 1.5secs has to go.
Have a look at my explanations, and tweaking possibilities:
    http://blog.lilybiri.com/question-question-slides-in-captivate
    http://blog.lilybiri.com/question-question-slides-part-2
You can move the pausing point more towards the end, but only with the mouse (there is no Timing accordion). Or you can change the Continue option to 'Go to Next Slide' both for Success/Failure.
BTW this is nothing new, has always been the case. The posts were written for previous versions.
I would recommend to add a last slide after the last question slide, it doesn't have to be the Score slide, certainly if you want to report to a LMS (allow little bit of time to CP)

  • Quiz Slides inserted into other slides??

Is it possible to insert a quiz slide into another slide with content on it?  I have a short story in a series of about 11 slides, and would like the user to be able to answer some questions pertaining to the paruticular slides as they unfold.  Is it possible to manipulate a multiple choice question that is inserted in another slide, and/or can the question even be inserted into a story slide?  Thanks in advance!

    Hi Sabrina
Accept my apologies for this late answer, last week has been very hectic. I will try to make it up, will send you a link to the example slide I did create if this is really what your wanted. You'll find a screenshot.
I create a slide with a duration of 10secs. The drawing I created (SimpleDiagrams) is visible for the duration of the slide.
To the slide an audio is attached (it is music here, but you will have a narration, that has a timeline of 7secs. After those 7secs, the question appears (see timeline screenshot). It has 4 Text captions:
Question itself (How many men...), labeled it Quest1
    3. 4. The three possible answers, labeled Ans1_1, Ans1_2 and Ans1_3
The answers are covered with 3 click boxes, CB1_1, CB1_2 and CB1_3. They do only have a Success Caption, deleted Failure as well as Hint Caption. The caption gives the feedback to the user (on the screenshot I show the feedback for the correct answer). All captions are in the same location, have same size. To each caption I attached the appropriate object audio. It will play when the caption appears.
Finally I have a 'Next' button, that is initially set to invisible in the Properties, but will become visible when the correct answer has been chosen. You have to make sure that the pausing time of this button is after the pausing time of the click boxes. I labeled this button BtNext1
I created 2 standard advanced actions, really simple ones:
rewind to be attached to all click boxes that sit on top of incorrect answers; they will rewind the playhead so that it will not continue when the click box is clicked (which is the default behavior); since there is nothing specific to the slide object ID's, this can be reused on all question slides; action has one statement:
    Assign   rdcmndGotoFrameAndResume with rdinfoCurrentFrame
success to be attached to the click box on top of the correct answer (here CB1_2); it doesn't have to rewind the playhead, but will show the button that pauses the slide again (a little bit later on the timeline because the pausing time is later than for the click boxes);  this action has a slide specific object ID (the label of the button), so you will have to duplicate it to have an instance for each slide, and change the button identification (label); to make editing easier I chose this typical label, you will only have to change the last character if you label your buttons with this logical names; this action has only one statement as well:
    Show  BtNext1

  • I have disabled the next/skip button in quizes and don't remember how I did it.

I have disabled the next/skip button in quiz and don't remember how I did it. I need to reenable it. Oh yea Captivate 7.

    Thank you for responding.
Not sure what you mean. The master question slide looks normal and the project question slide does as well. When I launch the project the Next/skip button is grayed out and I cannot click on it. In the properties it looks the same as the other buttons.

  • Why do quiz slides not work in LMS?

Using Captivate 7. Scorm 2004. I added three multiple choice quiz slides to the course, interspersed between content pages, to act as review questions. Each quiz slide has a Submit and a Clear button.
When I reloaded the updated course, now with the quiz slides, to the LMS (Cornerstone -stage environment), the options on the quiz slides are not clickable and the Submit and Clear buttons are missing.
    My settings are:
Completion - based on slide views - 100%
Success - based on slide views - 100%
Quiz - "Optional - user can skip"
      Pass/Fail - 0% required to pass
If Failing: Allow infinite attempts - checkbox (but I've also tried 1 attempt)
    Thanks!

Thanks, Lieve. Actually, I think the reason that the LMS did not correctly display the quiz slides is because it had already marked me as "complete" (I had taken the course multiple times previously.) Plus in all the various versions I re-loaded to our Stage environment, I kept changing quiz settings, etc., and I think the poor LMS was just so confused. So after I made a few more changes to the course (see below) and logged in as a different user, the course and quiz slides displayed correctly.
I made these changes to quiz settings in Captivate:
      - I based completion on only "Slides viewed" -- not on "Quiz is passed"
      - On the "Pass or Fail" settings, I changed "Go to next slide" to "Continue"
and under  "If failing grade," I changed "1 attempt" to "infinite attempts."
I also removed the reportable click box from slide 1.
So I'm not sure which of these changes solved the problem, but the course is working correctly now, thankfully.

  • Bug in Captivate 5 with duplicating quiz slides??

    Hi,
I have a quiz with 100 questions. I created a formatted question slide, (custom font, etc.) and wanted to duplicate this slide so that I wouldn't have to recreate it for each quiz slide.
The client wants to have audio (Text to Speech) and Closed Captioning visible on each slide. The issue is when I go to duplicate the slide to make a new question slide, I can't change the Closed Captioning text in the duplicated slide as it's linked to the original one.
Any ideas? I really don't want to have to create these questions slides by hand each time...

    Hello,
I was puzzled by your question and just tried to reproduce it but was able to change the CC-notes on the duplicate slides? Could you explain your work flow? And BTW: what is your version number? Recently a patch was released, most recent is now version 5.0.2.630

  • Captivate 7 - HTML5 - Project to External MP4 - Back to Project at Quiz slide

    Hi,
I am new to using Captivate and my company has me using Captivate 7. I am tasked with creating a project (blank project) importing a video, and then returning to the Captivate project to take a quiz. The video quality is not good in HTML5 or MP4 when imported into the project. I have alternatively, linked within the slide a button to the HTML5 video,  and successfully launched the video with perfect quality. I have created a button within the HTML5 video to go back to the original project. I see an option to go back to the project, but not to the specific slide where the quiz begins. What is the best way to accomplish this?

If you set the number of attempts to Infinite, the user will not be able to continue until he has given a correct answer. The answer will not be reset, but he can change it and the Failure caption will appear in which you can put the Feedback. Be sure to hide the playbar (there is an option in the Quiz settings) and to drag the Next button (that doubles as a Skip button during Quiz, is Next during review) under the Clear button (can be used by user to clear the answer). That is only necessary if you want to allow review. If not, uncheck the Next button.

  • Advanced Action jumps Quiz slide pause point

    Hello,
I have a project I have asked questions about in a previous discussion but as this is a new difficulty so I have started a new discussion.
The project in made up of only quiz slides and on each quiz slide there are:
1 - 4 text boxes that are controlled by advanced actions with ss set as buttons....this part is working great.
    the quiz ...standard stuff
    and audio ...not working
I created 2 groups and 1 ss set to function as a button.  Group 1 has an arrow and says "Play Audio" Group 2 has a square and says "Stop Audio".  On the first slide the action works great...just as I would like it to work.  After answering the question you then continue to the next slide and the audio works for three clicks...click to play, click to stop and then if you click again the slide jumps the pause point on the question slide and none of the buttons work on the slide at all.   It does not make a difference if you start the project form the beginning or from the middle, the problem is still the same.  The first slide works just as it should and the second slide jumps the pause point and you are shut down and can not continue. I am not able to click the submit, answer the question...nothing.  Any insight would be very much appreciated as once again, I am stuck.  I am not sure if the problem is caused by the fact that it is a quiz slide and there is something about the quiz slide itself that is causing the problem.  Or ... more likely, I am just missing something.
    Thank you.
This is what the buttons look like.
    Play Pause Action:

Advanced Actions and Groups, this was so helpful!
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=Sy09xPoP69A

You didn't watch the other video? It was about playing audio as well...Have also a long blog post about possible scenarios to play/pause audio. It is different, because it is about a real pause, not about replaying an audio clip as in your example:
    http://blog.lilybiri.com/toggle-shape-buttons
Question slides are a different beast, you have always to be very careful there. I blogged about buttons on question slides:
    http://blog.lilybiri.com/want-a-button-on-question-slide-in-captivate
The question slide objects have highest priority. I should explore this more in depth, but my intuition tells me that perhaps clicking on your shape button triggers the action that is performed as second step on the Question slide (press Y or click on the slide). Does it happen before  of after the user clicks the Submit button?
