Skyhook Wireless' location services no longer work on Apple devices

Hello,
Two weeks ago I emailed Skyhook after I'd noticed my iPod Touch wouldn't find it's location anymore on location based apps even though I always keep my Access Point update on Skyhook's database. They told me that they don't offer their services to Apple anymore.
After hearing that I searched the Internet a bit and found this article: http://www.xconomy.com/boston/2010/08/04/skyhook-wireless-digs-in-touts-location -patents-after-apple-drops-technology-from-iphone/
So basically I'd like to know if it's true that we can't locate our devices by using Skyhook's database anymore and if so how does one track their ipod's location now.

While you have a point wrt the tech staff, I'd expect some acknowledgment of the problem, and perhaps an indication of a schedule/priority. For the formal bug report systems I am familiar with ( I'm a professional engineer/scientist, PhD in EE ) there is feedback to the reporter, and a mapping of priorities. IMHO, there is a lot of quiet from apple over this.
But, thanks for your response, I guess I will wait patiently ( or at least until an android PDA shows up )
Yes, the "no response to problem reports" does give the not-so-warm feeling of shoving something into a black hole. Occasionally, Apple will contact a problem reporter if they need more technical detail.
I did see a comment from someone once where they reported that someone at Apple told them that Apple was looking at a way for users to request updates/corrections to the database. Lots of "someones" in there so take that for what it's worth.
An automatic update mechanism isn't so easy since it could be maliciously abused. The Skyhook update mechanism was quite slow to take effect perhaps for this reason.

  • Location services no longer working after 4.3.3 update.

I have a 3rd Gen 32GB touch, and after updating the software today, my location services no longer work. My device fails to find my location for the maps app, as well as other 3rd party apps. There was no problem with finding my location prior to this update, and other devices on my network aren't having an issue pinpointing a location either.
I have tried restoring my iPod as well as turning the location services on and off.
Any help would be greatly appreciated (:

I have the same iTouch and have experienced the same problemafter updating the software.
If you go to Settings>Location Services and it says “ON yet it’s gray and faded, please read on.
    Go to Settings>General>Restrictions (Enter Passcode)>Allow Changes:Location
The page should have something that would say “Allow Changes”, “Don’t AllowChanges”….and some of the 3rd party apps that need location servicesas you mentioned listed below. Tap “Allow Changes” and slide “Location Services”ON. Then manually slide the 3rd party apps that you want to enableLocation Services to ON.
Then, you’re good. Hope it works out. Frustrating, I know.

  • Location Services no longer work for Chrome & Firefox & Twitter

I'm a developer working on a few geolocation websites. Up until a few days ago, both Chrome & Firefox were able to access Core Location services.
Now when I go to System Preferences -> Secuirty & Privacy -> Location Services, the only 2 apps I see listed are Evernote & Safari. I no longer see Chrome, Firefox, or Twitter.
Is there any way to add these applications? Any other suggestions?
    Thanks in advance,
    -Hitesh

Nevermind, folks. The issue was with chrome/firefox & not core location as the browser was never using it.
I cleared my cache & history & now both browsers are finding me correctly using google's html5 geolocation library.
It wasn't a core location issue to begin with. Thanks anyway!

  • Why are my Location Services no longer working in Mountain Lion?

I don't remember when it started but I can no longer use the location services in Mountain Lion. Everytime I try to locate a Tweet or Facebook post from either Notification Center or Share Sheets, the arrow turns blue, then turns greay again with "Add Location."I also cannot use Find My Mac using iCloud. iCloud tells me that it cannot locate my device.
I can confirm that I do have Location turned on under Privacy.
I don't know what to do or if anyone else if suffering from a similar problem.
    Any help would be welcomed.

  • Location services do not work when my MBP or iPad are in the basement

I thought location services work based on wifi, yet my MBP when in the basement even though it is on wifi location services won't work. The same with my iPad wifi, in the basement the location services are unavailable. The iPhone, however location services work fine deep in the basement. I am trying to understand this, could anyone explain. This wasn't a problem with OS Mavericks that I remember.

Location services works based on there being a known WiFi access point in the Apple Access Point database.
While not in the basement, you are likely seeing neighboring WiFi access points which are geo-located as opposed to yours which apparently is not.
I have heard that the database gets populated by iPhone and cellular iPads being located by cellular, then associating that location with WiFi access points visible to the iDevice.
I also believe they used the SkyHook Wireless database at one time, and may still do so. http://www.skyhookwireless.com/submit-access-point
You can submit your WiFi Access Point and geo-location which may or may not help.

  • My iPad Air has the latest software update, since that the location services are not working! What to do? Even my friend's iPod has the same problem. Our version is iOS 7.1.2. I think that the services have stopped working since iOS 7.0.4.

My iPad Air has the latest software version(iOS 7.1.2) update, since that update the location services have stopped working. have a solution?

I have had the same problem, so many apps do not work properly without it! Apple says the internet satellite, the Internet satellite says Apple, back and forth with the blame instead of fixing the problem. Have turned location on and off, reset everything multiple times ( lots of hours and bandwidth to download ), Siri is now working part time, I guess she has cut back her hours for the summer. Even in these forums was suggested to check with Skyhook who does the global positioning, and after hours with them, they ended up saying that they have nothing to do with it anymore, Apple does. All to no avail and much frustration! I wonder if this is happening with the iPhone's? i'd like to know if this is happening with others that do not use satellite as their ISP? That would help narrow down the argument with Apple vs. satellite. Fell for you! Someone please help us! Ta

  • Contacted Skyhook about location services. Help!

Is there any fix yet for location services not working? I've tried it all, turned off and on, reset network settings, location services and even restored my entire device. I submitted my info to Skyhook and also emailed them. Does anyone have any advice on what i can do to fix this?
    Here is skyhooks reply:
    Hello -
Unfortunately, Skyhook's software is not running on iOS4 enabled devices. You
will need to contact Apple Support for help. We apologize for the
inconvenience. Let me know if you have any questions.
    Thanks

I echo your questions regarding Apple's location services. I have several family iPods, iPhones, and gave iPods away this year for Christmas gifts to people who apparently don't have Apple's location services support in their community.
Since so many apps use location services, I strongly advocate that Apple provide a mechanism for it's loyal users to:
    1. Like Skyhook, provide a mechanism to provide a very precise location (lat/lon) for individual's home WiFi location, accurate to, say, within 1 meter.
    2. Reference the above, provide a mechanism for home WiFi router owners to "opt in", or volunteer the location information, for the overall community good. This could be via a web site, email, or within iTunes.
With this, Apple can be more transparent, and explain how its WiFi location sevices work, and how the WiFi transmitter data is collected, whether that be from mobile collection platforms, purchased from a separate database provider, or collected from iPhones and cross-references with its GPS and cell tower mapping, or a combination/hybrid of all methods.

  • IPhone 6 location services/gps not working

Anyone else have an issue with iPhone 6 location services/gps not working? I have had it happen to me twice where it stopped working for good 7 or 8 hours and then all of sudden it starts working again. For example, directions don't work, every time I open Apple Maps it will say "Cannot determine location", then when I press the location icon on the bottom left, it will try to search again and have an approximate location but not exact, where as the iPad that I have right next to it is able to pin point the exact location. Sometimes the location circle is pulsing blue sometimes its gray. If I am driving and have tracking on it won't track, and so on.  I have tried to setup the phone as new without restoring the backup, when it stopped working with no luck, it still didn't work. I went and restore it back from backup and few hours later it started to work again. This has happened twice now since I got the phone last Friday.

Check your "Privacy" settings on your iPhone see what apps are using your location.

  • Location services don't work even though they are on

My location services do not work even though they are switched on. When I ask Siri something that requires my location it tells me to turn on location services and Siri but they are already on.

For location the iPod uses the location nearby wifi routers that are in Apple's data base. You do not have to be connect to the router.
Thus, it appears that the router the iPod is using does not have the correct location in Apple's database. Apple continuously updates their database based on data it obtains from iPhones. No one has found a way to tell apple to correct/add a wifi router to their database.
To test this, go to another location/another network like Starbucks and see if location work there

  • Location services is stopped working after upgrading to iOS 5

Hi, Location services is not working after upgrading to iOS 5. How can i switch it on?

Try resetting the iPod.  I had to do that to get my iPod to show via FindMyiPod.
Reset iPod touch:  Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

  • TS3274 How come My location services aren't working, I've reset the location warnings.

How come My location services aren't working, I've reset the location warnings.

For location the iPod uses the location of nearby routers that are in Apple's database of routers and their location. Thus it appears that Apple's database is incorrect. You do not have to be connected to the router, just within range.
Apple periodically updates their database based on information they obtain from iPhones, The iPhone has to have turned on the option to send info to Apple. no one has found another way to get the location of a router added/corrected.
You can confirm that by going to well-know place with wifi like Starbucks or McDonalds

You can't delete the update and your problem probably is not in the Update.
Check to see if Location Services is turned ON. (Settings > Privacy > Location Services)
