Skype causing major internet latency

Hello,
I've been using skype for a while now, around about 2-4 years and I've never had this problem before till recently. When skype is open, bareing in mind that I am not calling anyone, my internet speeds drop from 40Mbps to around 15 or sometimes even 2 Mbps. But the weird thing is when I am on a call it shoots back up to about 40Mbps, also when I close my skype my speeds go back up.
What could be causing this?

  • Skype causes wireless internet to disconnect

Hey guys, so my Skype over the last 3 or 4 days has been disconnecting me from the internet on my laptop when I've been in a call for almost exactly 25 minutes every time. I know Skype to be the problem because I never get disconnected when it is closed or when I'm not in a call with someone.
I researched the problem quite a bit over the past 2 days and have applied the "fixes" I agree with. Those are: Unticking the Use port 80 and 443 for additional incoming connections box
                     Unticking enable uPnP
Temporarily disabling my AVG Antivirus software
Uninstalling UTor-rent (This site doesn't like that word for some reason)
System Restoring my laptop to before the disconnections started
                     Restarting my laptop (of course)
This issue is really becoming a pain for a competitive gamer such as myself when I really need Skype to communicate with my teammates.
Any help would be appreciated and I will answer any questions you might need an answer to as quickly as I can.

Hi! You mention this was approx half a year ago, have you since then tried any newer versions of Skype? If so do they behave the same way? This seem to be an issue with one spesific network, does skype seem to interfere with other networks? Is this occuring even when Skype is not running? Capreolus,The answers in order:Yes, have tried latest version which is why I am searching for an answer. To clarify, the issue started about 6 months ago but has not gone away regardless of updates. I only tried uninstalling Skype as a solution when I stumbled on a solution to another issue on another machine with other software that jogged my memory that this occurred after I installed Skype so I tried uninstalling as a fix. Of course, that defeats the prupose of having Skype. No, it only seems to be this one netowrk but what ever Skype does, no one else seems to have connection issues but no one was looking for issues among the customers. I happened to mention it.Yes, it occurs when Skype is not running.  I actually have not tried running Skype while there as I had no internet access so why try to use Skype!I am going to be off the grid for about two weeks so replies will be delayed.  Thanks.

  • A seeming small change by Verizon causes major monetary and unrecoverable damages

A seeming small change by Verizon causes major monetary and unrecoverable damages
Back, I think in March or so, Verizon changed how they bill. Prior to this time frame my elderly mom paid the phone bill and I paid the DSL bill. The DSL bill came on my name and I paid by credit card and the phone bill came under her name and she paid by direct debit. She will not use a computer.
So, they make both bills on her name and won't change it. They did, however, allow the payment from my credit card.
The first unfortunate consequence was the internet speed suddenly dropped in speed by a factor of 2 to 1.5/364 and it did take me probably a month to notice it. NO ONE that I called was able to find the problem. It took multiple attempts until some bright “call in technician” said the problem is on their end and could be fixed in software. Thus, I believe, because of the name change, the provision changed too. The phone line crapped out too at this time.
The troubleshooting was stupid too. I took another modem and connected it directly to the NID and directly to the laptop and the technician on the phone said, it's either in your house or your modem and wanted to send me a new modem which they did. I don' get it. This is the wrong conclusion.
This shows the need of modems like Westell 2200 and the Westell 6100 because of the ability to measure line statistics and provisioned data rates.
Verizon sent me a D-link model DSL-2750B modem which I have to return because its just plain old stupid. It boasts Wireless n and the wired ports are 10/100. What's up with that? Next, there are no line stats and a horrible interface, akin to Verizon's website. Still can't figure out how to put it in Bridge mode. I own a D-link repeater and the interface is fine.
I asked them what modem they would send me and they would not tell me, so I got whatever piece of junk they had lying around.
I have now purchased a Network RAID array with no wireless access and with ~400 mb/s access rates. Yep, really stupid router.
Because of the number of outages, I have to be able to quickly switch from a bridge connected modem, Westel 6100) to one that is connected in direct mode, a Westell 2200 It's almost easy, but not quite, since the equipment is up in the rafters in the laundry room. The DSL cable is commercial terminated CAT5, which is rare. The modem is within 6' of the NID.
Plans include, the ability to switch the DSL line with a switch with positions for Modem #1 (Bridge), Modem #2(Wired), #3(RJ11 – Normal wiring) and #4: RJ-11 (Reverse wiring) and moving the direct connect jack for easy access. In any event, testing with the DSL modem at the NID is the gold standard.
In progress, is a 48 port Gigabit patch panel for phone and Ethernet, A separate 24 port RED patch panel will be bridged for phone.
I have already upgraded my network infrastructure to include a UPS for the network infrastructure and POE (Power over Ethernet) for the DSL modem. The UPS backup does not backup a repeater although it may in the future.
Now, let's go back to this seeming innocuous billing change.
So, this constant having to access the modem in the alternate configuration and a medical condition (migraines) that makes it hard to think clearly. So, in one of these episodes, I placed my laptop on top a container that was soaking laundry.
So, the LCD screen has to be replaced at $300 and the battery had to be replaced. Then the Ethernet cord to the modem got pulled and caused the laptop to fall on the floor. It worked for a few weeks and then suffered an UNRECOVERABE hard drive crash.
During this time frame, in fact over a 2 day period. My mom ended up in the hospital and to a rehab facility. My car ended up staying in the shop for a few days because of parts unavailability. My hard drive crashed and their was water in the basement. I don't have time for this.
Recovery would have cost $2004.00, if it were possible. I only have a drive image from 2011 which I have yet to try to use. I' now running UBUNTU Live rather than Windows 7 Pro. Some of the very important stuff was backed up on Flash, but a lot of stuff is gone forever.
Plans are to contact the billing office and the attorney general's office in the state where billing questions need to be resolved.
The last outage, fixed on July 27, was flagged as a phone outage by Verizon, when 18 routers supposedly died. 18 routers suspiciously means that they they were not adequately protected against surges. Verizon should look at the way DelMarVa Power reports outages: see: Delmarva,  Put the usual World Wide Web Prefix and the COMercial domain suffix
For god's sake, quit making the website circular. I though Yahoo was the expert in that. I never visit Verizon's website unless there are problems. I mistaking thought I could find outage information, say using my phone's browser. This time I had to purchase service from CLEAR internet to ride me through this fix.
I know, you can't fix stupid and you can always find a better idiot. Comcast is looking more attractive.
Compensation of or my loss I will probably never get, but maybe with the help of the attorney general I can get the billing fixed. I do have power of attorney. Now, of course, the name the Verizon Website addresses me as is not right on this forum.
All, basically because of Verizon's unreliable network, incompetent people and the lack of maintenance of copper lines. The problem is, “We have little choice”. Currently, we need traditional land-line service to support an Emergency Response system. It's unclear whether digital phone lines support Faxes and alarm monitoring reliably.
I'll bet that there is NO WAY to tell Verizon if a service address as special needs like Emergency Medical reporting via phone or Internet, so that priorities for repair can be done properly. Utilities have that capability. Those ares with people with oxygen generators or other medical equipment get a higher priority,

That should not be happening.  I sympathize with both of you (you and the the person who strated this thread).  That sounds like the reason I would never want Dish.
I am fortunate that my service with Verizon Fios has been very reliable and that I haven't had too many issues over the years.  But don't get me started on Verizon Wireless.  I am through with doing any more business with them once my cell phone minutes run out.  I love it when they say they have done everything the could to investigate such a simple issue with running my debit card transaction wrong and blaming it on my bank, i.e. running it through as a "debit" when I choose "credit" all of a sudden now  two times in a row after 4 years of doing it right as "credit".  And now they consider the issue closed on their end when nothing has been resolved.  That's no way to treat a long time customer and I really felt treated like I was a bother to them.  It's not like I ever paid them much money for this pre-paid cell phone service that I have used infrequently but I was really mad at the way they just wrote this off and pretty much told me "too bad".  Talk about "customer non-service".  It's also very hard to track the number of minutes left on my balance.  I'm due for an upgrade anyway.  I want to switch to the I-Phone from this flip phone but never again with Verizon Wireless.  T-Mobile is way more attractive.  Verizon  Wireless is not only an entity separatedfrom Fios but it's definitely a much different animal and their customer service has really gone downhill.  When you're treated like they don't care, it's maddening.
My customer service experience with Fios overall has been far superior to that most of the time.  My setup is simple and even though there are some people who will inevitably complain about anything just to vent, I definitely believe at least some of what is posted here.  And switching TV, phone, and Internet providers is a lot more involved than switching a cell phone provider.

Adobe Premiere Elements 8 "Auto Analyzer" causes Microsoft Internet Explorer 9 and 10 to freeze. How is this fixed? Uninstall your software?

    Leo_Do
Are you running Premiere Elements 8 as the 8.0.1 Update. If not, please do so
    http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4653
The automatic Background Rendering and AutoAnalyzer features of version 8 are major grabbers of system resources.
The 8.0.1 shuts off the automatic Background Rendering feature. See Edit Menu/Preferences/General and the background
    rendering option there.
But, you have to shut off the AutoAnalzyer feature yourself in the Elements Organizer part of the program. To do that:
    1. Click on the Organizer tab in the row below the active Organize header in order to open the Elements Organizer.
    2. In the Elements Organizer workspace, go to Edit Menu/Preferences/AutoAnalzyer options and turn them all off.
    3. To get back to the Premiere Elements workspace from the Elements Organizer workspace, in the Elements Organizer
    workspace, go to File Menu/Exit.
But back to what you actually wrote
Adobe Premiere Elements 8 "Auto Analyzer" causes Microsoft Internet Explorer 9 and 10 to freeze. How is this fixed? Uninstall your software?
Are you saying, with Premiere Elements 8.0/8.0.1 closed, that you are having these freezing problems with the non Adobe programs mentioned OR are you multitasking with Premiere Elements 8.0/8.0.1 project open when the freeze occur in these non Adobe programs?
In the context of an opened or closed Premere Elements program, please check to be sure, when you close Premiere Elements, that the close is reflected in the Task Manager/Processes. When Premiere Elements is closed by you, are you still seeing it displayed in Task Manager/Processes?
We will be watching for your follow up and deciding what next based on the details that you supply.

  • How can an external drive cause my Internet to slow to a crawl and then fail?

I have two WD My Passport Ultra 1 TB USB 3 new drives. One I'm using for Time Machine and one for CCC (Carbon Copy Cloner). I have been trying to use them with my new MacBook Pro retina 13-inch.
For the last few days I've had weird problems trying to connect them via a USB 3 hub. I though the hub was the problem (because things seemed to be fine until I introduced a hub into the equation) and already returned one.
But now I see the same thing happening even without the hub.
It appears that one drive, when connected to a USB 3 port (it doesn't matter which port), even when it's doing nothing (I erased and and removed the CCC task), causes the Internet to slow to a crawl, and then stop. All connectivity ceases.
The instant I unmount and remove the drive the Internet springs back to normal speeds - over wifi about 110 Mbps.
Disk Utility says there are no problems with the disk. So does WD's only diagnostic utility. And the firmware is up-to-date.
The other disk, running Time Machine, seems to have no issues at all.
I guess I will return this drive. It could be subtly defective in some way. But what way? Why would an external USB 3 drive affect the Internet connectivity?
    doug

I came across this post while in search of the answer to the very same question only I am experiencing this problem when connecting to a USB 3.0 hub and nothing else.  The resuling slowdown in my internet speed leaves me hanging intermittently between screens in Safari, sometimes indefinitely.  When I remove the USB cable, normal speeds resume.  Activity Monitor shows no undue load on the CPU.  I did not notice this problem until just recently.  Could this have something to do with the recent OSX patch.
BTW: I am running a 2012 15" MacBook Pro with Retina display.
Anybody have a clue as to what might be going on here?

Please help me figure out what causes my internet connection and airport extreme run erratically.  It occurred twice already and my only solution is to reset the date and time, and restart my macbook pro. after that, everything seems to work perfectly again. Go to the App Store and check out the Purchases List. If iPhoto is there then it will be v9.6.1
If it is there, then drag your existing iPhoto app (not the library, just the app) to the trash
Install the App from the App Store.
Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.

One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?
iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.

  • I need free network analyzer software for my mac. we are trying to monitor what software may be running which is causing our internet to fail, although the internet is still coming into our modem.what is recommended?

My internet keeps 'tripping' at or around the same period time each day.  We have already replaced our modem from our internet provider and we bought a new airport extreme router. We do not believe these were the cause, although we have now ruled them out as a cause.  Everytime the internet fails, our internet provider company tells us that there is still plenty of signal coming into our house. There is something going on inside we believe, and a technician set up our Network Utility to run a continuous ping test to capture information about when it 'trips' againn.  Yesterday, it happened again, and when he checked the data out, he said he is sure there is something 'running in the background' on my IMac.  He advised me to download a free Network Analyzer so he could further investigate what is was that was causing the problem, so I need a free network analyzer software for my Mac. The issue has been going on for a long time, so it is not the new operating system, Lion. This morning, we changed the radio channel from 'auto' to 'manual' and set a new channel, hoping that might help. We are trying to find out what program may be running (even a tiny one in the background) which is causing our internet to fail, although the internet is still coming into our modem. What is free downloadable product is recommended?

Will Activity Monitor and/or Network Utility, both already in the Utilities folder on your Mac, help in trying to diagnose the problem.
If you are connecting via wifi what encryption are you using? If you're using the Exteme I doubt that you are using WEP, but worth checking as it seems Macs don't like it and work better using WPA.

  • How come my ATV2 causes my internet to crash?

Anytime I go on to my ATV2 and start watching a movie, streaming music to it, or whatever, after a little while my internet goes down and none of the computers on my WIFI can use the internet until I reset my router(aka unplug it and plug it back in). The internet goes down after being on ATV2 for a little while.
    Why does this happen?
I have a kind of old router. Would getting a new one fix this problem?
Or do I need to do something with the Apple TV to fix this problem? Maybe it's using to much bandwidth and thus causes the internet to go down?
    Thanks for your help!

Anyone have a solution to this problem yet? I am still having this problem occur every time I use the Apple TV!

  • Internet latency/Network settings

Internet latency on my home network is very high, slowing down my speed. Its working fine in other networks. Is there something I can do in network settings? Thanks

Please answer as many of the following questions as you can. You may already have answered some of them; in that case, there's no need to repeat the answers.
Restart the router and the broadband device, if they're separate. Any change?
Run Software Update and install all available updates for OS X or the computer's firmware. Any change?
If possible, connect to the router with an Ethernet cable and turn off Wi-Fi. Any difference?
Are any other devices on the network, and if so, are they the same?
If you can connect to more than one network, are they all the same?
Are all network applications affected, or only some? If only some, which ones?
Is networking always the same, or is the problem intermittent?
Disconnect all other devices from the network. Any change?
If you're running a MacBook with the lid closed, open the lid. Any difference?
Start up in safe mode and test. Any difference?
Start up in Recovery mode. From the OS X Utilities screen, select Get Help Online. A clean copy of Safari will launch. No plugins, such as Flash, will be available. Any difference?
If possible, turn off Bluetooth and disconnect any USB 3 devices. Any difference?

  • "feeds and updates" widget causing major lag since froyo

    Hey guys,
Ive noticed that ever since I downloaded the Froyo OTA update last week, the "feeds and updates" widget is causing MAJOR lag issues. It takes several seconds to move from that screen that the widet is on, and trying to scroll through the widget is VERY slow and choppy. I have tried both the soft reset and the hard reset, without any improvement. If I remove the widget from the screen, my phone gets significantly faster, and the lag pretty much disappears, so Im pretty sure its that widget causing the problem. Has anyone else noticed this problem, and if so, is there any way to fix it?  I like using that widget for my facebook updates, and want to keep it!

    Kizersosei wrote:
I have a Samsung Galaxy S Fascinate and since the Froyo 2.2 OTA update last week, my phone turns into a brick as soon as I add my Facebook account to the Feeds and Updates widget.  The screen locks up, I can not scroll the wall up and down, and scrolling the screens left and right takes forever; they freeze between screens and everything lags to the point where the phone becomes useless.  I powered the phone down and up, took the battery out, no remedy.  A hard reset on the phone will make the phone usable again, but as soon as I add Facebook back to the Feeds and Updates widget, the phone starts locking up again.  Called Verizon and they reached out to Samsung who thought there was a glitch during the download of the 2.2 software, so Verizon sent me a replacement phone of the same make and model.  As soon as I activated it, it told me Froyo 2.2 was ready to be downloaded to the phone for updating.  Did that, everything was working fine UNTIL I added my Facebook account to the Feeds and Updates widget; the phone started lagging and locking up as the previous one did.  I'm waiting to talk to Level 3 support with Samsung as I write this.  Please note, if I reset the phone and don't add my Facebook account to the Feeds and Updates widget, the phone is usable.  However, I did notice that in Vibrate Mode with text message and email notification, the vibration barely lasted a millisecond; I could not feel the vibrations in my pocket.  In my opinion, this 2.2 update is flawed and needs re-working.  I had no issues with this phone with the 2.1 software, and would prefer to go back to it if possible until 2.2 is fixed or another, non-buggy update is released for this phone.
If that is your wish for now, I see no problem in you going back to 2.1. Verizon support should be able to provide you with that os. Just be sure you don't then check for any new updates.

  • Skype causing TCP/IP limit 4226 error

I've been having internet problems recently, with browser essentially "hanging" unable to connect to any website. the issue seems to be recurring with no particular pattern. the only thing I've noticed is that skype is running fine, while web browing gets stuck.
This is what I found while analyzing Win XP events stats:
    - web browsing appears to be stuck because of 4226 error "TCP/IP has reached the security limit imposed on the number of concurrent TCP connect attempts."
    - skype appears to be initiating tons of "open connections", as far as i could see with the "netstat -no" command;
    - Win XP error has been recurring since right about the time I've upgraded to the latest skype version 7.3.101.
Any helpful suggestions would be appreciated.

The limit is imposed by Windows on computers running Operating systems with Windows XP SP2 and above (as a security feature).  If your computer is stalling on the connections then the majority of the time it will be caused by firewall/antivirus, malware or other software further bogging down the system and network connection.  Those same restrictions are imposed on my machines and I haven't run across that error when using Skype though I have had some connections stall due to my default AnitVirus filters.  You may want to test out what occurs when you uninstall the firewall software and limit the amount of memory resident programs you have running in your system tray.  If you simply want to remove the restriction you can try this 3rd party patch that people use (at your own discretion).
    TCP-Z Universal Tcpip.sys Patch
    deepxw.blogspot.com/2009/01/universal-tcpipsys-patch-v10-build.html
Another tool you can use that might help the situation is the following TCP Optimizer:

Both of these tools provide backups in case you need to undo the changes.  You might also want to perform system restore points as well.
